DESCRIPTION:Adam Larson is an American saxophonist\, composer\, educator and author currently residing in the Kansas City-area. \nLarson holds BM and MM degrees in jazz performance from The Manhattan School of Music and was a part of the vibrant NYC jazz scene for eleven years before relocating in 2019. While a resident of the KC-Metro\, Larson has held positions at UMKC Conservatory\, University of Kansas and The Kansas City Art Institute. SUMMARY:The Esbenshade Series - Marietta College Presents:  Loudon Wainwright III
DESCRIPTION:Born in Chapel Hill\, N.C. in 1946\, Loudon Wainwright III came to fame when “Dead Skunk” became a Top 20 hit in 1972. He had studied acting at Carnegie-Mellon University but dropped out to partake in the Summer of Love in San Francisco and wrote his first song in 1968 (“Edgar\,” about a lobsterman in Rhode Island). \nHe was soon signed to Atlantic Records by Nesuhi Ertegun\, and after that was lured by Clive Davis to Columbia Records\, which released “Dead Skunk.” His songs have since been recorded by Bonnie Raitt\, Johnny Cash\, Earl Scruggs\, Kate & Anna McGarrigle\, his son Rufus Wainwright\, and Mose Allison\, among others. Wainwright has recorded 27 albums\, including his 2009 Grammy Award-winning High Wide & Handsome. \nIn 2022 Loudon released Lifetime Achievement\, an album of 15 original songs\, that established his singular talent as our foremost six-string tragicomedian\, not only undiminished\, but hitting new heights. The orchestration varies from solo performance to trio work with his longstanding musical cohorts\, Chaim Tannenbaum and David Mansfield\, to Nashville and Memphis-style little big bands\, to a full-blown string arrangement by Rob Moose. Loudon puts his latest achievement in the context of a lifetime of music making this way: “When I made my first record for Atlantic in 1969\, I wanted to make not only a recording\, but a document that captures a moment. Now\, fifty years later\, I guess I still want to make a testament of songs\, and I like to think they might last a while.” \nIn October of 2020 Loudon unveiled the album I’d Rather Lead a Band\, in which he is featured as a vocalist with Vince Giordano and The Nighthawks. The 14-song collection of classic songs from the 1920s and ‘30s was widely acclaimed. During the pandemic\, Wainwright has produced several virtual shows\, including The Special Relationship (presented by the Royal Albert Hall ) and The Great Unknown\, a musical tribute to his friend\, the late George Gerdes. Also featured in that show were Richard Thompson\, Suzanne Vega\, Steve Forbert\, and the members of Spinal Tap. \nIn Fall 2018\, Loudon released Years in the Making a 42-song treasury of rare and unreleased Loudoniana. This 2-disc\, 60-page hardbound audio-biography of his 40-year career includes orphaned album cuts\, lovingly made lo-fi home recordings\, radio appearances\, demos\, live performances and beyond. It features appearances by Kate McGarrigle\, Suzzy Roche\, Bill Frisell\, Van Dyke Parks\, Chaim Tannenbaum\, David Mansfield\, and the Wainwright children Rufus\, Martha\, Lucy\, and Lexie.

In 2017\, Wainwright published his memoir\, Liner Notes (Blue Rider Press)\, which led to appearances on Fresh Air with Terry Gross and WTF with Marc Maron. The New York Times said the book “makes your heart wobble on its axis.”

Wainwright also created a one-man theatrical show\, Surviving Twin\, which combines his songs and the writings of his late father. Initially developed as part of University of North Carolina’s Playmakers series\, it focuses on fatherhood—both being a father and having one—and also explores the issues of birth\, self-identity\, loss\, mortality\, fashion\, and of course\, pet ownership. Surviving Twin has been performed in limited theater engagements and is available as a Netflix special\, produced by Judd Apatow and directed by Christopher Guest. \nAdditionally\, Wainwright has co-written with songwriter/producer Joe Henry on the music for Judd Apatow’s hit movie Knocked Up\, written music for the British theatrical adaptation of the Carl Hiaasen novel Lucky You and composed topical songs for NPR’s Morning Edition and All Things Considered and ABC’s Nightline. An accomplished actor\, he has appeared in films directed by Martin Scorsese\, Hal Ashby\, Christopher Guest\, Tim Burton\, Cameron Crowe\, and Judd Apatow. Wainwright has also starred on TV in M.A.S.H. and Undeclared\, and on Broadway in Pump Boys and Dinettes. DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Esbenshade Series of Marietta College\n“Music to Love” with pianist Barbara Nissman is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.\, Thursday\, March 14\, at Peoples Bank Theatre as part of Marietta College’s Esbenshade Series. Tickets for Nissman’s performance can be reserved starting at 10:00 a.m.\, Monday\, February 26. This will be an evening of great music and an informal chat as Nissman shares the music and stories of some of her favorite composers. \nHailed as “one of the last pianists in the grand Romantic tradition of Liszt\, Rachmaninoff\, and Rubinstein\,” Nissman continues the grand bravura tradition of romantic pianism. Recognized as an authority on the music of Franz Liszt\, her 2 DVD set\, Franz Liszt: Portrait of the Man & his Masterwork- The Sonata in B minor with Michael York as the voice of Liszt and a stellar cast of his contemporaries has recently been released. Her recordings of Prokofiev\, Bartók\, and Ginastera are considered “definitive\,” and she has garnered praise for her series of recordings of nineteenth-century composers: Beethoven\, Chopin\, Liszt\, Schumann\, Brahms\, and also Rachmaninoff. All these recordings are now available on Nissman’s new label\, Three Oranges Recordings. \nNissman’s international career was personally launched by Eugene Ormandy\, who had previously engaged her as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra. She has performed with the leading orchestras of Europe and America. She has also worked with some of the major conductors of our time\, including Ormandy\, Riccardo Muti\, Stanislaw Skrowaczewski\, and Leonard Slatkin. Nissman was inducted into the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame’s class of 2023. \nThe series\, funded by the Frederica G. DESCRIPTION:Choreographer/dancer\, Nai-Ni Chen\, was a unique artist whose work crosses many cultural boundaries. Each of her dances reflect her personal vision as an immigrant and an American female artist with deep roots in Asian culture. DESCRIPTION:In a cultural landscape filled with endless pundits and talking heads\, Fran Lebowitz stands out as one of our most insightful social commentators. \nHer essays and interviews offer her acerbic views on current events and the media–as well as pet peeves including tourists\, baggage-claim areas\, after-shave lotion\, adults who roller skate\, children who speak French\, or anyone who is unduly tan. The New York Times Book Review calls Lebowitz an “important humorist in the classic tradition.” Purveyor of urban cool\, Lebowitz is a cultural satirist whom many call the heir to Dorothy Parker. \nLebowitz on special interest groups: “Special-interest publications should realize that if they are attracting enough advertising and readers to make a profit\, the interest is not so special.” Lebowitz on frankness: “Spilling your guts is exactly as charming as it sounds.” Lebowitz on herself: “Success didn’t spoil me\, I’ve always been insufferable.” This is Lebowitz off the cuff. Her writing—pointed\, taut and economical—is equally forthright\, irascible\, and unapologetically opinionated. \nLebowitz worked odd jobs\, such as taxi driving\, belt peddling\, and apartment cleaning(“with a small specialty in Venetian blinds”)\, before being hired by Andy Warhol as a columnist for Interview. That was followed by a stint at Mademoiselle. Her first book\, a collection of essays titled Metropolitan Life\, was a bestseller\, as was a second collection\, Social Studies. By turns ironic\, facetious\, deadpan\, sarcastic\, wry\, wisecracking\, and waggish\, Lebowitz’s prose is wickedly entertaining. Her two books are collected in the Fran Lebowitz Reader\, with a new preface by the author. The Fran Lebowitz Reader has been published in nine languages including French\, Korean\, Russian\, Spanish\, and Turkish. Lebowitz is also the author of the children’s book\, Mr. Chas and Lisa Sue Meet the Pandas. \nBetween 2001 to 2007\, Lebowitz had a recurring role as Judge Janice Goldberg on the television drama Law & Order. She also had a part in the Martin Scorsese-directed film\, The Wolf of Wall Street (2013). A raconteur if ever there was one\, Lebowitz has long been a regular on various talk shows including those hosted by Jimmy Fallon\, Conan O’Brien\, and Bill Maher. In an interview with the Paris Review\, Lebowitz said “I’m not a nervous person. I’m not afraid to be on TV. I’m only afraid when I write. When I’m at my desk I feel like most people would feel if they went on TV.” \nShe can also be seen in various documentary films\, including the American Experience series on New York City\, as well as Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures (2016)\, Regarding Susan Sontag (2014)\, and Superstar: The Life and Times of Andy Warhol (1990)\, among others. In 2010 Martin Scorsese directed a documentary about Lebowitz for HBO titled Public Speaking. A limited documentary series\, Pretend It’s a City\, also directed by Martin Scorsese\, premiered on Netflix in 2021\, and was nominated for the 2021 Emmys in the Outstanding Documentary Or Nonfiction Series category. In 2021\, she was given the Forte dei Marmi Festival della Satira Lifetime Achievement Award and was a 2021 Foreign Press Honorary Awardee–an award given by the Foreign Press Correspondents Association & Club USA. \nLebowitz was named to Vanity Fair’s International Best Dressed List Hall of Fame in 2008.She remains a style icon. It was a joining of two proud\, but antiquated\, traditions at the time: social and pleasure clubs dated back over a century to a time when black southerners could rarely afford life insurance\, and the clubs would provide proper funeral arrangements. Brass bands\, early predecessors of jazz as we know it\, would often follow the funeral procession playing somber dirges\, then once the family of the deceased was out of earshot\, burst into jubilant dance tunes as casual onlookers danced in the streets. By the late ’70s\, few of either existed. DESCRIPTION:Featuring special guest vocalist Meredith Dean Augustin\n2015 West Virginia Music Hall inductee Bob Thompson is perhaps the state’s best-loved musician and ambassador of jazz. He has touched many people’s lives both as an internationally known entertainer and a teacher. \nGrowing up in NY\, he sang in street corner doo-wop bands and originally attended WVSC on a scholarship to study trumpet and music education. After switching to piano\, he quickly became a staple on the local scene with bands like the Modern Jazz Interpreters and Joi. \nAfter some independent releases\, he signed to Capitol Records subsidiary Intima and later to the Ichiban label. Two of his albums climbed into the Top 25 in Billboard’s contemporary jazz chart while four of his releases made their way into the Top 10 on the Radio and Records jazz chart. Those nationally released works furthered his reputation significantly. \nIn the meantime\, he performed in Brazil\, South Africa and Scandinavia. Appearances on BET\, as the house pianist on the NPR show Mountain Stage\, and several tours abroad have made Thompson a visible presence in the jazz world for more than 40 years. In addition\, for the past two decades Thompson’s annual holiday jazz show Joy to the World has become a regular feature of Public Radio International’s holiday programming. \n \nMeredith Dean Augustin\n“When she sings\, I feel close to God!” These words have been used to describe listening to Meredith. Love flows through her–and her voice touches hearts. A West Virginia girl\, who grew up in Morgantown\, Meredith began playing the piano and singing at a very young age. She describes\, “My mom taught piano lessons while I was in her womb. I think it started there. When I was two\, my mom and dad told me it was time to give up my pacifier\, and I could sing myself to sleep…. I haven’t stopped.” \nAfter completing her Masters of Science degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from West Virginia University\, Meredith’s musical activities began leading her to New York City\, where she eventually made her home. Currently\, she is the Director of Music at the Church of St. Francis of Assisi in midtown Manhattan. Meredith reflects\, “In the last15years\, my job has allowed me to come face to face with so many beautiful people from so many beautiful cultures. It certainly has helped me evolve personally\, as well as musically.” \nA rare artist who appeals to fans of all genres–particularly jazz/world/Christian–Meredith has been blessed to collaborate with musicians from all over the world\, in particular\, Haiti. She has collaborated with many liturgical composers and is featured on records with John Angotti\, Tom Kendiza\, and Chris DeSilva to name a few. Meredith also has released four solo records entitled: What’s Goin’ On\, Deep River\, Come and Go With Me\, and Boundless Mercy. When she is no ton the road presenting workshops and concerts at conferences throughout the country\, Meredith can be found performing quarterly shows in New York City\, selling out jazz clubs such as Club Bonafide\, Gin Fizz\, and the Triad Theatre\, to name a few. In the jazz world she has performed with Etienne Stadwijk\, John Benitez\, Dave Kikoski\, Axel Tosca and many others. Meredith has been a featured singer on Mountain Stage: Joy to the Word with Bob Thompson\, and she recently made her TV debut on Good Morning America singing background vocals with the legendary Patti LaBelle. \nEnjoy all of our upcoming performances on our new Byrider Stage!

DESCRIPTION:Characterized by the Philadelphia Inquirer as a “poet…[with] an expressive edge to his playing that charms\, questions\, and coaxes\,” American pianist Daniel Hsu captured the bronze medal and prizes for best performance of both the commissioned work and chamber music at the 2017 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Also a 2016 Gilmore Young Artist\, first prize winner of the 2015 CAG Victor Elmaleh Competition\, and bronze medalist of the 2015 Hamamatsu International Piano Competition\, he is increasingly recognized for his easy virtuosity and bold musicianship. \n \nA native of the San Francisco Bay Area\, Daniel Hsu began taking piano lessons at age 6 with Larisa Kagan. He made his concerto debut with the Fremont Symphony Orchestra at age 8\, and his recital debut at the Steinway Society of the Bay Area at age 9\, before being accepted into the Curtis Institute of Music at the age of 10\, along with his two older siblings. Since then\, he has made his debuts with the Philadelphia Orchestra (2016) and Carnegie Hall (2017) as part of the CAG Winners Series at Weill Recital Hall. He has appeared in recitals at the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts\, Krannert Center for the Performing Arts\, and Gilmore International Keyboard Festival\, as well as in concerts in Philadelphia\, Chicago\, Denver\, Los Angeles\, Portland\, and New York. With orchestra\, Daniel has collaborated with the Tokyo\, North Carolina\, Grand Rapids\, New Haven\, and Fort Worth Symphony Orchestras\, working with conductors Leonard Slatkin\, Nicholas McGegan\, Cristian Măcelaru\, Ruth Reinhardt\, and Marcelo Lehninger. \nDaniel’s chamber music performance with the Brentano String Quartet earned him the Steven de Groote Memorial Award for the Best Performance of Chamber Music. The Dallas Morning News praised “his impassioned\, eloquently detailed Franck Quintet\,” proclaiming it to be “a boldly molded account\, with a natural feeling for the rise and fall of intensity\, the give and take of rubato. Both he and the Brentano seemed to be channeling the same life force.” He regularly tours the United States with the Verona String Quartet and in duo piano with his brother\, Andrew\, and appears frequently in chamber music festivals. \nDecca Gold digitally launched Daniel’s first album featuring live recordings from the Cliburn Competition of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition and Beethoven’s Piano Sonata\, op. 110\, as well as his award-winning performance of Marc-André Hamelin’s Toccata on “L’homme armé.” He has also been featured in interviews and performances for WQXR\, APM’s Performance Today\, and Colorado Public Radio. \nNow 21 years old\, Daniel is currently the Richard A. Doran Fellow at the Curtis Institute of Music\, where he has studied with Gary Graffman\, Robert McDonald\, and Eleanor Sokoloff. \nHe is a Marvel film buff and enjoys programming. He contributed to the creation of Workflow\, a popular productivity app that allows users to automate tasks on iPhone\, iPad\, and Apple Watch\, which won the coveted 2015 Apple Design Award and was acquired by Apple in March 2017.

DESCRIPTION:Since he first came to the world’s attention with his deeply beautiful and original take on George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” in a viral video that dominated YouTube in 2005\, the Hawaiian-born Jake Shimabukuro has virtually reinvented the four-string instrument\, causing many to call him “the Jimi Hendrix of the ukulele.” \nThroughout his rich and varied catalog of albums\, Jake has captured the many moods of the ukulele\, fearlessly traversing boundaries and putting his inspired touch on everything from island standards\, to popular tunes and classical symphonic concertos. He has collaborated with artists from Yo-Yo Ma\, Jimmy Buffett\, Jack Johnson and Cyndi Lauper to Ziggy Marley\, Dave Koz\, Lyle Lovett and Bette Midler\, and he haswowed audiences at SXSW\, Bonnaroo\, the Playboy Jazz Festival and the cutting-edge TED conference. This year\, he founded Shima Ukulele with his brother\, a fellow artist and teacher\, Bruce Shimabukuro\, which aims to make quality ukuleles accessible for anyone interested in learning to play. \nShimabukuro\, one of the most exceptional and innovative ukulele players in the history of the instrument\, will release his newest record\, The Greatest Day\, on August 31\, 2018 via Mailboat Records. \nThe album was recorded at Music City’s famed Ronnie’s Place studio with producer R.S. Field – the same city\, studio\, and producer as 2016’s “adventurous and dazzling” (Associated Press) Nashville Sessions. Returning as the ace rhythm section are bassist Nolan Verner and drummer Evan Hutchings; the group added guitarist Dave Preston to expand upon the sound they started creating two years ago. \nShimabukuro is now on an extensive tour of the United States and begins a tour of Japan this fall. “I’m really excited to play the new songs in my shows\,” he says. “Making my new record was one of the highlights I’ve had in the studio. I couldn’t be happier with the sounds and arrangements. But most of all\, we had a ton of fun making it.”

DESCRIPTION:Over the past two decades\, award-winning singer\, songwriter\, guitarist and contemporary blues artist Keb’ Mo’ has cultivated a reputation as a modern master of American roots music through the understated excellence of his live and studio performances. In his newest release\, Keb’ Mo’ Live – That Hot Pink Blues Album (Kind of Blue Music; 4/15/16)\, Keb’ delivers some of his best material in the most authentic form\, through live recordings. Recorded while on tour in 2015\, the double-disc album features 16 live recorded songs from Keb’ Mo’s extensive catalog.  Several of the tracks are songs off his most recent album\, BLUESAmericana\, which garnered Keb’ Mo’ a 2015 Blues Music Award from the Blues Foundation\, three 2015 GRAMMY award nominations and multiple other achievements.  B.B. King\, Buddy Guy\, the Dixie Chicks\, Joe Cocker\, Robert Palmer and Tom Jones have all recorded his songs. His guitar playing has inspired leading instrument makers Gibson Brands to issue the Keb’ Mo’ Signature Bluesmaster acoustic guitar and Martin Guitars to issue the HD-28KM Keb’ Mo’ Limited Edition Signature model. He has collaborated with a host of artists\, including Bonnie Raitt\, Jackson Brown\, Cassandra Wilson\, Buddy Guy\, Amy Grant\, Solomon Burke\, Little Milton and many others. Keb’ also wrote and performed the theme song for the smash sitcom\, “Mike & Molly\,” and was music composer for TV’s “Memphis Beat.” He has also been featured in TV and film\, playing Robert Johnson in the 1998 documentary “Can’t You Hear The Wind Howl\,” appeared three times on the television series\, “Touched By an Angel\,” and was the ghostly bluesman Possum in John Sayles’ 2007 movie\, “Honeydripper.” Keb’ is very involved with the Playing For Change movement\, which was created to inspire\, connect and bring peace to the world through music. He has been involved with Playing For Change since its inception and has been featured in many related videos and events. Keb’ was featured on the Playing For Change album: Playing for Change 3: Songs Around the World\, which was released in 2014 and features over 180 musicians from 31 countries\, including Keith Richards\, Sara Bareilles\, David Hidalgo\, Cesar Rosas\, Taj Mahal and many others.

DESCRIPTION:Known to millions as “The Royal Family of the Guitar\,” the Romeros were founded by the legendary Celedonio Romero with his sons Celin\, Pepe and Angel in 1958. The Quartet went through natural transformations\, and today consists of the second (Celin & Pepe) and third generations (Lito & Celino). To have so many virtuosi of the same instrument in one family is unique in the world of musical performance\, and in the realm of the classical guitar it is absolutely without precedent. With a 55-year plus history\, The Romeros have built an enviable discography and their achievements have not gone unnoticed. In February of 2007\, The Romeros were granted The Recording Academy’s President’s Merit Award from the Grammys in honor of their artistic achievements.

DESCRIPTION:Sujari Britt showed her prodigious talent and uncanny devotion to and understanding of music from a very early age. She began formal study of the cello at age 4\, following her study on the violin\, and piano. Sujari is pursuing her Bachelor of Music in Cello Performance at Manhattan School of Music. Sujari is the distinguished recipient of the 2016-17 and 2015−2016 Hans & Klara Bauer Scholarship at Manhattan School of Music\, where she is a college senior studying with distinguished pedagogue Marion Feldman. In Fall 2017\, Sujari will study at Sibelius Academy\, Finland with eminent pedagogue Martti Rousi. In Spring 2016\, Sujari was featured in Canada’s Neapolitan Connection Concert Series.

The Branford Marsalis Quartet will be joined by guest-vocalist Kurt Elling in a singular collaboration of musical forces. What has emerged from the partnership\, after an intense week of performance and recording in New Orleans\, is a new album\, entitled Upward Spiral. This collection blends Songbook staples\, jazz standards\, and standards-to-be from a diverse array of composers. Every track on Upward Spiral confirms the beyond-category strengths of both the Quartet and Elling. The tight-knit working band featuring Marsalis on saxophones\, Joey Calderazzo on piano\, Eric Revis on bass\, and Justin Faulkner on drums form a nearly telepathically cohesive unit. The addition of Elling’s deep jazz vocabulary\, technical versatility\, and outstanding intonation enables the band to perform a variety of material in new ways. \n

Gavin Michael George is a 13 year-old student of Antonio Pompa-Baldi who began playing piano at the age of 3½. By 11\, he had seven professional concerti and many solo performances\, both nationally and internationally. He has performed at locations around the world\, including Carnegie Hall\, Severance Hall\, Washington D.C.’s Constitution Hall\, Minneapolis’s Orchestra Hall\, Boston\, Florida\, Italy and Luxembourg. He performed on the Emmy-award winning show From the Top\, The CBS Early Show\, and The Queen Latifah Show\, and is featured in a documentary by Radical Media of NYC on their Youtube THNKR series\, PRODIGIES.
