SUMMARY:The Polar Express
DESCRIPTION:Our Polar Express pajama matinee has quickly become a Marietta family tradition! Come aboard the Polar Express\, a magical train heading to the North Pole. Tom Hanks stars as the conductor—as well as five other roles! This beloved movie is based on the award-winning storybook written by Chris Van Allsburg\, this Christmas story tells of a boy who has reached an age when his belief in Santa is beginning to falter. \nThe young and young-at-heart are encouraged to come dressed in Christmas pajamas and enjoy the show. Santa will be on hand to hear Christmas wishes\, and true to the Polar Express experience\, hot chocolate and cookies will be available\, too. \nLate one Christmas Eve\, a young boy is lying awake waiting for the sound of sleigh bells ringing from Santa’s sleigh. Five minutes to midnight his room begins to shake\, and he hears a thunderous sound outside his window. The boy jumps from his bed and sees a train in the middle of his street. The boy grabs his robe and rushes out the front door to look at the train. The train’s conductor asks the boy if he is getting aboard. The boy asks\, ‘Where are you going?’ ‘To the North Pole\, of course. This is the Polar Express!’ replies the conductor. At the last minute\, the boy jumps on the train and finds other young boys and girls going to the North Pole. Their adventure begins. On the train he meets more children\, among them a know-it-all\, a clever girl and a poor boy. During the trip to the North Pole\, there are several complications before the end of the journey comes. When they reach the North Pole\, the children meet Santa Claus\, and the boy gets the very first Christmas present of the year—a sleigh bell from Santa’s sleigh. They return safely to their homes in time for Christmas Day\, and the boy finds the Christmas present from Santa beneath his tree.

SUMMARY:Creature from the Black Lagoon
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Marietta High School Class of 1954 \nLove is strange. Especially when the monstrosity known as the Gill-Man falls hard for Kay (Julia Adams) while she’s on a geology expedition in the Amazon! After changing the world ten times over with movies like DRACULA\, FRANKENSTEIN\, and THE WOLF MAN\, Universal took inspiration from real-life prehistoric beasts for the iconic CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON. And horror history was ever the same again. Confidently directed by sci-fi maestro Jack Arnold (TARANTULA) and featuring gorgeous creature designs by Milicent Patrick\, it’s not surprising that Guillermo del Toro once referred to this movie as\, “the most beautiful I’ve ever seen.” \nCREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON has its roots\, of all places\, at a party hosted by Orson Wells. Producer William Alland was engaging in some small talk when he met a cinematographer who claimed to have seen photographic evidence of a fish-man that lived in the Amazon. Alland\, looking for a new project to develop at Universal\, took this story – Amazon fish-man seeks the yearly sacrifice of a beautiful young woman – and immediately knew what to do with it: he would remake KING KONG! Yes\, Alland’s original vision for the movie skewed very closely to the story of KING KONG. Scientists would capture the gill-man through the use of live bait (a beautiful woman\, naturally) and take it back to civilization where it would rampage before eventually being killed due to its love for a woman that it could never know. In fact\, if you watch CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON and REVENGE OF THE CREATURE back-to-back\, you get the story of KING KONG in almost its entirety. \nWhen it came time to film the movie\, CREATURE was shot simultaneously on the Universal back lot (everything in the film that takes place above sea is on a stage) and in Florida for the undersea scenes. Two individuals played the Gill-Man – Ben Chapman played the creature when it was on land (his feet were weighed down with lead in order to give the creature a shuffling walk) and Ricou Browning played the creature for the underwater scenes. Browning was a cave diver who helped give Arnold a tour of Florida during location scouting. His landing of the Gill-man role was completely by chance. It led to a fruitful career in Hollywood\, though. Among Browning’s later contributions to Hollywood would be creating the show FLIPPER. \nOne of the more interesting aspects of CREATURE OF THE BLACK LAGOON is the fact that it cast a scientist as the film’s hero. You have to remember that in the early part of the ‘50s\, scientists were more often than not cast as the villain. If a character was a scientist\, he was usually insane\, bent on world domination or just generally up to no good. CREATURE is remarkable in Richard Carlson’s portrayal of Dr. David Reed as an adventurous\, buff and heroic scientist. Essentially this was the same role he played in IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE – meaning Carlson\, Alland and Arnold are all partially to thank for the modern depiction of the hero scientist. \nAny talk about CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON would be incomplete without mention of Millicent Patrick. The design of the film’s monster was – by most accounts – a collaborative process. While Bud Westmore\, Universal’s head of the makeup department\,  would seek sole credit for the design of the Creature\, people who worked on the film describe Westmore’s involvement as strictly limited. Millicent Patrick\, a beautiful young woman who dabbled in such areas as design\, modeling\, animation and acting\, is said to have been the one to truly help finalize the look of the Creature as we know him today. When Westmore felt that she was getting too much credit in the press\, though\, he had her blackballed and – for all intents and purposes – drove her out of the design business. While Patrick would continue to act\, she never again contributed to a film’s production or costume design. Her fate is still a mystery – nobody quite knows what exactly became of her after she quit acting in the ‘60s. \n

Setting off for Mumbai with nothing but a gifted but cantankerous scout in tow\, JB stages a televised\, nationwide competition called “Million Dollar Arm” where 40\,000 hopefuls compete before two 18-year-old finalists\, Rinku and Dinesh\, emerge as winners. JB brings them back to the United States to train with legendary pitching coach Tom House. The goal: get the boys signed to a major league team. Not only is the game itself difficult to master\, but life in the U.S. with a committed bachelor makes things even more complicated-for all of them. While Rinku and Dinesh learn the finer points of baseball and American culture\, they in turn teach JB the true meaning of teamwork and commitment. Ultimately\, what began as a purely commercial venture becomes something more and leads JB to find the one thing he was never looking for at all-a family.

DESCRIPTION:September First Friday: Back to School Movie Night\n“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while\, you could miss it.” No\, it was not Confucius that said that. It was that sage of sages\, Ferris Bueller\, as played (unforgettably\, most would argue) by Matthew Broderick. \nSandwiched in between PRETTY IN PINK and SOME KIND OF WONDERFUL\, screenwriter John Hughes told a different kind of high school story in FERRIS BUELLER’S DAY OFF\, which became the biggest box office hit of his directorial career\, grossing just over $70 million in 1986 (that was more than the combined takes of THE BREAKFAST CLUB and WEIRD SCIENCE\, his two previous films). Instead of focusing on teenage cliques or young lovers from two different worlds\, Hughes instead turned his attention to something nearly everyone does at one time or another: playing hooky. And nobody played it better than Ferris. \nBreaking the “fourth wall” was a big idea in the mid-1980s — Tom Stoppard’s characters were doing it on Broadway in plays like THE REAL INSPECTOR HOUND and Cybill Shepherd and Bruce Willis did it multiple times in episodes of MOONLIGHTING — and Ferris frequently tells his story directly to us throughout the movie. And what a tale it is\, involving a snotty sister (Jennifer Grey)\, a borderline-deranged principal (Jeffrey Jones)\, a scared-of-everything best friend named Cameron (Alan Ruck)\, a lovely and up-for-anything girlfriend named Sloane (Mia Sara)\, a stolen Ferrari\, a parade\, a memorable appearance by Charlie Sheen (only a few months before PLATOON would make him a star)\, a near-comatose teacher (Ben Stein) who keeps droning “Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?”\, a severly stuck-up waiter who wails “I weep for the future!” and so much more. While FERRIS BUELLER is much rowdier and goofier than THE BREAKFAST CLUB and PRETTY IN PINK\, underneath it all is the same general message: The best part of high school is getting out of it. The boy grabs his robe and rushes out the front door to look at the train. The train’s conductor asks the boy if he is getting aboard. The boy asks\, ‘Where are you going?’ ‘To the North Pole\, of course. This is the Polar Express!’ replies the conductor. At the last minute\, the boy jumps on the train and finds other young boys and girls going to the North Pole. Their adventure begins. On the train he meets more children\, among them a know-it-all\, a clever girl and a poor boy. During the trip to the North Pole\, there are several complications before the end of the journey comes. When they reach the North Pole\, the children meet Santa Claus\, and the boy gets the very first Christmas present of the year—a sleigh bell from Santa’s sleigh. They return safely to their homes in time for Christmas Day\, and the boy finds the Christmas present from Santa beneath his tree.

DESCRIPTION:Over 100\,000 Film Lovers\nAcross the Globe\nUnite for One Week\nFor One Film Festival \nDon’t miss the 20th annual Manhattan Short Film Festival coming to Peoples Bank Theatre on September 28 & 29\, 2017! Screenings at 7:00 p.m. each night. The global film festival is screening 10 finalists from among 1\,615 entries from 75 countries. The Final 10 films represent independent filmmakers from the U.S.\, Georgia\, Italy\, Latvia\, New Zealand\, Spain\, Switzerland\, Syria\, and the United Kingdom. These films will be screened before an audience of some 100\,000 film-lovers in more than 250 venues the last week of September and first week of October. Peoples Bank Theatre is one of just four venues to screen the festival in Ohio. \nTickets are just $8. Students get in for $5 (with valid id). \nAttention Parents: These films are not rated. Some films may contain strong language or graphic scenes.
