SUMMARY:The Polar Express
DESCRIPTION:Come aboard the Polar Express\, a magical train heading to the North Pole. Tom Hanks stars as the conductor—as well as five other roles! Based on the award-winning storybook written by Chris Van Allsburg\, this Christmas story tells of a boy who has reached an age when his belief in Santa is beginning to falter. \nThe young and young-at-heart are encouraged to come dressed in Christmas pajamas and enjoy the show. Santa will be on hand to hear Christmas wishes\, and true to the Polar Express experience\, hot chocolate and cookies will be available\, too. \nLate one Christmas Eve\, a young boy is lying awake waiting for the sound of sleigh bells ringing from Santa’s sleigh. Five minutes to midnight his room begins to shake\, and he hears a thunderous sound outside his window. The boy jumps from his bed and sees a train in the middle of his street. The boy grabs his robe and rushes out the front door to look at the train. The train’s conductor asks the boy if he is getting aboard. The boy asks\, ‘Where are you going?’ ‘To the North Pole\, of course. This is the Polar Express!’ replies the conductor. At the last minute\, the boy jumps on the train and finds other young boys and girls going to the North Pole. Their adventure begins. On the train he meets more children\, among them a know-it-all\, a clever girl and a poor boy. During the trip to the North Pole\, there are several complications before the end of the journey comes. When they reach the North Pole\, the children meet Santa Claus\, and the boy gets the very first Christmas present of the year—a sleigh bell from Santa’s sleigh. They return safely to their homes in time for Christmas Day\, and the boy finds the Christmas present from Santa beneath his tree.

DESCRIPTION:See\, hear and experience silent film just as it would have been presented in our historic theatre in the 1920s! \nJoin us for a family–friendly evening of music and film with Fox Theatre organist Dave Calendine\, presented in conjunction with the 42nd Annual Mid-Am Band Organ Rally hosted by American Flags & Poles. \nThe night will open with an audience sing-along of “Music of the Mouse: Music from the Walt Disney Songbook\,” featuring favorite tunes from classic Disney movies and cartoons. \nThen the program will step back in time for the Buster Keaton silent film comedy\, The Balloonatic\, with live accompaniment provided on the organ by Calendine. \nDave Calendine\nDave Calendine\, a Warren\, Ohio native\, started his musical career with the player piano at the age of 3.  By age 5\, he was playing some of the music without the aid of the player mechanism.  By age 7\, he was playing at his church\, where he also started to teach himself the organ at age 15. \nWhen at age 16\, Dave first heard the magnificent sound of the theatre organ\, he was instantly hooked and determined to play the theatre organ at whatever the cost.  His wish came true when\, one night after a movie\, the management of the Akron Civic Theatre let him play.  Shortly after that\, he was hired as one of the house organist at the 2\,678-seat movie palace.  The youngest person to ever hold the position\, he entertained audiences there for over 3 years. \nAfter leaving the Akron Civic Theatre\, he continued on\, playing at several restaurants featuring theatre pipe organs\, such as the Organ Grinder (Toronto\, Canada)\, and Shady Nook (Cincinnati\, Ohio).  Dave has also played several theatre pipe organs throughout the United States and Canada. \nIn 2000\, he went on his first overseas solo concert tour through Germany and Switzerland\, playing to packed houses. \nDave currently holds the position of Resident Organist and organ curator for Detroit’s fabulous Fox Theatre\, holding that position for 25 years now.  He has also played nine years for the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular\, featuring the world-famous Rockettes. \nDave’s enthusiasm for the theatre and theatre pipe organ has him serving on the Board of Directors and Corporate Secretary for the American Theatre Organ Society.  He is the Chairman of the Board of Directors and President of the Motor City Theatre Organ Society\, which owns and operates the Redford Theatre in Detroit.  He is also on the Board of Directors and Treasurer of the Detroit Theatre Organ Society\, which owns and operates the Senate Theatre.  He was also the President of the Flint Theatre Organ Club\, an auxiliary support group for the Flint Institute of Music. \nDave’s love of mechanical musical instruments also has him actively involved with the Musical Box Society\, International (MBSI).  He is currently Chairman of the Mid-America Chapter of MBSI\, and past secretary of the Lake Michigan Chapter of MBSI.  His work with mechanical instruments has garnered him various awards\, including being honored by the Governor of the State of Montana for his work on restoring the Bovey Collection of Mechanical Instruments\, one of the largest public displays of mechanical music in the United States of America.  His achievements there were also recognized in an Achievement Award by President George W. Bush. \nFor his regular employment\, Dave works in the Operations Department of Olympia Entertainment\, one of the nation’s premier presenters of sports and live entertainment\, operating several venues in Detroit\, including the Fox Theatre\, City Theatre\, Hockeytown Café\, Joe Louis Arena (current home of the 11-time Stanley Cup-winning Detroit Red Wings) and Comerica Park (home of the American League Champion Detroit Tigers). Opening in September of 2017 will be the new Little Caesars Arena\, which will be home to both the Detroit Red Wings and the Detroit Pistons. \nIn the fall of 2007\, Dave was honored by being inducted into the Achievement Hall of Fame at his high school\, Champion High School\, in Warren\, Ohio.   The first person to be inducted for the performing arts\, he was nominated by several of his former teachers. \nDave is organist at his church\, Southminster Presbyterian Church in Taylor\, Michigan. \nCurrently 45 years old\, Dave resides in Detroit\, Michigan.

While they come to grips with whatever prejudices they might still harbor\, the younger folks must also contend with John’s parents (Roy Glenn Sr. and Beah Richards)\, who are dead-set against the union. To complicate matters\, the older couple’s disapproving maid (Isabel Sanford) and Christina’s bigoted business associate (Virginia Christine) put in their two cents’ worth. While Joey is determined to go ahead with the wedding no matter what people think\, John refuses to consider marriage until he receives the unqualified approval of all concerned. The closing monologue delivered by Spencer Tracy turned out to be the last scene ever played by the veteran film luminary\, who died not long after the production. Based loosely on the true exploits of Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker during the 30s\, the film begins as Clyde (Beatty) tries to steal the car of Bonnie Parker (Faye Dunaway)’s mother. Bonnie is excited by Clyde’s outlaw demeanor\, and he further stimulates her by robbing a store in her presence. Clyde steals a car\, with Bonnie in tow\, and their legendary crime spree begins. The two move from town to town\, pulling off small heists\, until they join up with Clyde’s brother Buck (Gene Hackman)\, his shrill wife Blanche (Estelle Parsons)\, and a slow-witted gas station attendant named C.W. Moss (Michael J. Pollard). The new gang robs a bank and Clyde is soon painted in the press as a Depression-era Robin Hood when he allows one bank customer to hold onto his money. Soon the police are on the gang’s trail and they are constantly on the run\, even kidnapping a Texas Ranger (Denver Pyle) and setting him adrift on a raft\, handcuffed\, after he spits in Bonnie’s face when she kisses him. That same ranger leads a later raid on the gang that leaves Buck dying\, Blanche captured\, and both Clyde and Bonnie injured. The ever-loyal C.W. takes them to his father’s house. C.W.’s father disaproves his son’s affiliation with gangsters and enters a plea bargain with the Texas Rangers. The film made stars out of Beatty and Dunaway\, and it also featured the screen debut of Gene Wilder as a mortician briefly captured by the gang. Its portrayal of Bonnie and Clyde as rebels who empathized with the poor working folks of the 1930s struck a chord with the counterculture of the 1960s and helped generate a new\, young audience for American movies that carried over into Hollywood’s renewal of the 1970s. \nCast: \nWarren Beatty\nFaye Dunaway\nMichael J. Meanwhile\, Zhivago’s half-brother Yevgraf (Alec Guinness) and the mysterious\, revenge-seeking Strelnikoff (Tom Courteney) represent the “good” and “bad” elements of the Bolshevik revolution. Composer Maurice Jarre received one of Doctor Zhivago’s five Oscars\, with the others going to screenwriter Robert Bolt\, cinematographer Freddie Young\, art directors John Box and Terry Marsh\, set decorator Dario Simoni\, and costumer Phyllis Dalton. Santa will be on hand to hear Christmas wishes\, and true to the Polar Express experience\, hot chocolate and cookies will be available\, too. \nLate one Christmas Eve\, a young boy is lying awake waiting for the sound of sleigh bells ringing from Santa’s sleigh. Five minutes to midnight his room begins to shake\, and he hears a thunderous sound outside his window. The boy jumps from his bed and sees a train in the middle of his street. The boy grabs his robe and rushes out the front door to look at the train. The train’s conductor asks the boy if he is getting aboard. The boy asks\, ‘Where are you going?’ ‘To the North Pole\, of course. This is the Polar Express!’ replies the conductor. At the last minute\, the boy jumps on the train and finds other young boys and girls going to the North Pole. Their adventure begins. On the train he meets more children\, among them a know-it-all\, a clever girl and a poor boy. During the trip to the North Pole\, there are several complications before the end of the journey comes. When they reach the North Pole\, the children meet Santa Claus\, and the boy gets the very first Christmas present of the year—a sleigh bell from Santa’s sleigh. They return safely to their homes in time for Christmas Day\, and the boy finds the Christmas present from Santa beneath his tree.

SUMMARY:Patton
DESCRIPTION:A Special Veterans Day Showing! \nFREE ADMISSION \nRated PG \nJoin us for a special Veterans Day screening of this 1970 American epic biographical war film about U.S. General George S. Patton during World War II. In 1943 North Africa\, George Patton (George C. Scott) assumes command of (and instills some much-needed discipline in) the American forces. Engaged in battle against Germany’s Field Marshal Rommel (Karl Michael Vogler)\, Patton drives back “The Desert Fox” by using the German’s own tactics. Promoted to Lieutenant General\, Patton is sent to Sicily\, where he engages in a personal war of egos with British Field Marshal Montgomery (Michael Bates). Performing brilliantly in Italy\, Patton seriously jeopardizes his future with a single slap. While touring an Army hospital\, the General comes across a GI (Tim Considine) suffering from nervous fatigue. Incensed by what he considers a slacker\, Patton smacks the poor soldier and orders him to get well in a hurry. This incident results in his losing his command-and\, by extension\, missing out on D-Day. In his final campaign\, Patton leads the US 3rd Army through Europe. Unabashedly flamboyant\, Patton remains a valuable resource\, but ultimately proves too much of a “loose cannon” in comparison to the more level-headed tactics of his old friend Omar Bradley (Karl Malden). Patton won 7 Academy Awards\, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Scott\, an award that he refused.
