She appeared on NPR’s Mountain Stage in 2013 with The Fields of Gettysburg\, was a quarterfinalist in the 2015 and 2017 American Traditions Competition\, and won Best Cover Song in the 2015 and 2017 Ohio Music Awards. As a singer-songwriter\, her voice leans toward soulful styles with southern roots. In addition to her own songs\, she loves to write music for texts by modern poets. When she’s not singing\, Jess is a voice specialist. She works with singers across the region and helps train voice teachers to work with singers in popular\, commercial\, and contemporary styles of singing. \nBOB THOMPSON\nwww.colortones.com\n(Inductee – WV Music Hall of Fame)\nSince 1991 Bob Thompson has been pianist\, and regularly featured artist on West Virginia’s NPR syndicated radio show\, Mountain Stage. For the past twenty-four years he has also been co-producer and host of Joy to the World\, a Holiday jazz show\, broadcast on public radio stations nationwide\, and heard internationally on the Voice of America. In October 2015\, Bob Thompson was inducted into the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame.\nBob makes his home in Charleston\, West Virginia\, and has enjoyed a long and active career as a performer\, composer\, arranger\, and educator. For decades he has played at festivals and venues around the country\, and has also taken his music to Europe\, Africa\, and South America.\nBob Thompson’s resume includes guest appearances on Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz\, on National Public Radio\, and BET on Jazz with Ramsey Lewis. His recordings on Intima Records\, and Ichiban International\, received high recognition on the jazz charts\, with several reaching the top-ten. His recent recordings\, Bob Thompson “Live” on Mountain Stage\, and Smile\, with the Bob Thompson Unit\, are on his own label\, Colortones \nTODD BURGE\nwww.toddburge.com\nEmploying wry humor\, dexterous guitar work and drawing on a rich variety of life experiences\, Todd Burge has emerged as one of West Virginia’s most prolific singer/songwriters. Burge\, has played everything from Alternative Rock (63 Eyes\, The Larries) to Contemporary Folk\, performing concerts at festivals and in venues as diverse as CBGB’s & Joe’s Public Theatre in NYC\, The Country Music Hall of Fame\, The Kennedy Center\, and of course\, literally hundreds of clubs including the obscure\, to the world famous Caffe Lena\, Club Passim and Music City Roots. He has been a repeat guest on NPR’s Mountain Stage and has been called the “West Virginia’s premier songwriter”\, by its host\, Larry Groce. In 2014\, Burge wrote 13 songs for a musical adaptation of Love’s Labour’s Lost by William Shakespeare. Burge\, who might be known by many for his method of writing songs from the perspective of odd characters\, humans\, bugs and animals (listen to Building Characters produced by Don Dixon of R.E.M fame) released an album of very personal songs in 2015 entitled Imitation Life. The recording was produced by long term collaborator and two time Grammy winner\, Tim O’Brien. The album includes his original song\, Change (For Clean Water) which features Kathy Mattea on backing vocals. In 2016 Burge released “Live at Mountain Stage 2006-2015”. The 17 track CD features his many performances from the popular NPR radio show and podcast. It also captures the essence of his live energy and\, at times hilarious storytelling. Burge resides in Parkersburg WV with his wife Lisa and their children\, Will and Sophia. \nERIC GNEZDA\nwww.gnezda.com\nEric Gnezda is the creator and host of the American Public Television series\, Songs at the Center\, broadcast on 150 stations nationwide. The series features accomplished singer-songwriters performing “in the round” before a live audience. The weekly\, half-hour program showcases three-to-four artists\, and includes interviews and short features. \nAn award-winning songwriter and Emmy-nominated television journalist\, Eric and his work have been featured on media around the world. He is a recipient of the Ohioana Citation for Music Composition\, joining Michael Feinstein (American Songbook)\, Jorma Kaukonen (Jefferson Airplane)\, and Chip Davis (Mannheim Steamroller). \nAlso a keynote speaker and memoirist\, Eric performs for audiences across the country\, from convention centers\, to concert halls\, to small clubs\, including regular appearances at Nashville’s iconic venue for songwriters\, The Bluebird Café. He is currently adapting his memoir\, The Safe Life\, into a one-person stage show. He has released four CDs\, including his latest\, Songs of Hope in a Changing World. \nEric has contributed commentaries to NPR’s “All Things Considered\,” the ABC Radio Network\, and was a columnist for The Columbus Dispatch. As a television journalist\, He earned an Emmy nomination for his retrospective on the Munich Olympic massacre\, produced in Europe for American television. \nSadie Johnson\, a student at Marietta College\, first picked up the guitar at the age of six and has since developed into an inspiring blues guitarist\, composer and performer. Recently opening for Delbert McClinton\, she has numerous individual and ensemble jazz fest awards. With the ability to converse in 498 animal dialects\, Dolittle gathers up his friends Matthew Mugg (Anthony Newley) and Emma Fairfax (Samantha Eggar) and heads off on a journey to the South Seas to find the elusive great pink snail and the giant lunar moth. Along the way\, the group encounters a succession of bizarre human and animal characters — most notably the legendary pushme-pullyou\, an animal so outlandish that it compels Albert Blossom (Richard Attenborough) to burst out into the exuberant song\, “I’ve never Seen Anything Like It in My Life.” The film was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar in 1967.

The story takes place in a tropical jungle where people are conspicuously absent. But one day Bagheera the Panther (voice of Sebastian Cabot) discovers a baby in the wreck of a boat. Feeling pity on the child\, Bagheera takes him to be raised with the wolves. Ten years later\, the child has grown into Mowgli (voice of Bruce Reitherman). Mowgli discovers that his life is in danger because of the return to the area of Shere Khan the Tiger (voice of George Sanders)\, whose hatred of humans is such that Mowgli faces certain death if discovered. Bagheera agrees to transport Mowgli to the human village\, where he will be safe from Shere Khan. Along the way to the village\, night falls and Mowgli and Bagheera almost succumb to the man-eating snake Kaa (voice of Sterling Holloway). Escaping Kaa’s coils\, they run into the lock-step military elephant band of Colonel Hathi (voice of J. Pat O’Malley). Afterwards\, Mowgli\, who doesn’t want to be sent to the human village\, runs away from Bagheera and meets up with the fun-loving Baloo the Bear (voice of Phil Harrris). With both Bagheera and Baloo to protect him\, Mowgli is saved from several more life-threatening situations — including a barber-shop quartet of vultures\, the crazed King Louie of the Apes (voice of Louis Prima)\, and Shere Khan himself — before making it to the village of humans. \nCast: \nBruce Reitherman\nLouis Prima\nSterling Holloway\nJ. Still\, they aren’t prepared for the shock when she returns home from a vacation with a new fiancé: African-American doctor John Prentice (Sidney Poitier). While they come to grips with whatever prejudices they might still harbor\, the younger folks must also contend with John’s parents (Roy Glenn Sr. and Beah Richards)\, who are dead-set against the union. To complicate matters\, the older couple’s disapproving maid (Isabel Sanford) and Christina’s bigoted business associate (Virginia Christine) put in their two cents’ worth. While Joey is determined to go ahead with the wedding no matter what people think\, John refuses to consider marriage until he receives the unqualified approval of all concerned. The closing monologue delivered by Spencer Tracy turned out to be the last scene ever played by the veteran film luminary\, who died not long after the production. Performances are scheduled for Saturday\, July 23 at 3 p.m. and 5:30. \nGeppetto fashioned the puppet in the image of a small boy. Even as the lonely and kind woodcarver worked far into the night\, old Geppetto was not aware that the wood under the chisel had come from the trunk of an enchanted tree. But the Blue Fairy was aware\, as she watched from afar and gave to that puppet the gift of life. Thus begins the Missoula Children’s Theatre adaptation of one of the most beloved of all children’s stories–PINOCCHIO. Join our wooden-head as he dances with Geppetto’s charming toys\, travels the road to Pleasure Isle with Candlewick and his Crew\, and is swindled by the unsavory Fox and Cat. After escaping the clutches of the evil puppetmaster\, Stromboli\, Pinocchio finds himself in trouble once more–this time swallowed by a monstrous whale. Very scary stuff! As Geppetto and the friendly Urchins spin their magical tale\, we learn with Pinocchio that there are no shortcuts on the road to becoming a real\, live boy. \nAuditions for Pinocchio will be Monday\, July 18 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Students entering 1st grade through 12th grade are encouraged to audition. Approximately 50-60 local students will be cast to appear in the show. (Please note: There is no guarantee that everyone who auditions will be cast in the play.) Students wishing to audition must arrive by the scheduled starting time and stay for the entire two-hour session. The first rehearsal begins approximately 15-30 minutes after the audition. \nDue to time constraints\, late-comers and anyone missing the initial audition may not be considered in the casting of the show. \nMost students in the production will rehearse daily 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.\, Tuesday through Friday. Although not all cast members will be needed at every session\, those auditioning must have a clear schedule for the entire week and if selected\, be able to attend all rehearsals required for their role. A detailed rehearsal schedule will be distributed at the conclusion of the audition. Cast members scheduled for the full 4½ hours of rehearsal will be asked to bring a sack lunch or snack. \nThe Missoula Children’s Theatre is a non-profit organization based in Missoula\, Montana. Rodgers & Hammerstein’s first collaboration remains\, in many ways\, their most innovative\, having set the standards and established the rules of musical theatre still being followed today. Set in Western Indian territory just after the turn of the century\, the high-spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys provides the colorful background against which Curly\, a handsome cowboy\, and Laurey\, a winsome farm girl\, play out their love story. Although the road to true love never runs smooth\, with these two headstrong romantics holding the reins\, love’s journey is as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road.

SUMMARY:Ballet Folklorico
DESCRIPTION:Performances at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.\nClick “Buy Tickets” link to select tickets to either show. \n \nThe Ballet Follkorico was created to preserve Mexican folk dances and to provide others with the opportunity to appreciate diversity among cultures. The full name of the folk dance company is the Ballet Folklórico Mexico de Los Hermanos Avila. Carmen and Jesus Avila (sister and brother) who are still performing today founded the company in 1972. They were subsequently joined by a second and third generation of Avilas. \nJesus Avila serves as the company’s director\, while Armando Contreras is the choreographer\, costume designer\, and artistic director. The lavish and colorful authentic regalia are an integral part of the show and transition the energetic dancers from one scene to the next. The majestic costumes are symbolic of Mexican culture and are adorned with beads\, suede\, and colorful pheasant tails\, some of which reach six and a half feet in length. \nThe Ballet Folklórico Mexico has been recognized by U.S. and Mexican officials as one of the most outstanding groups presenting the authentic regional dances of Mexico. The group has received proclamations and commendations from the State of Wisconsin\, as well as from the Mexican Government Tourism Office. The dancers consider themselves multicultural ambassadors from around the world. Many of the dancers are college students coming from Mexico\, Puerto Rico and from as far as Japan and China. Based in Madison\, Wisconsin\, the group has performed all over the world\, including in Germany\, Russia\, and Mexico. The dancers rigorously practice four to five days a week to maintain the precision and integrity of their dances. \nThe program includes historic dances from Azteca\, Michoacan\, Guerrero\, Sonora\, Jalisco\, and other regions of Mexico\, as well as dances dedicated to the “soldaderas\,” the courageous women who supported and even fought alongside the men during the Mexican revolution. \nThe regional dances reflect the unique tradition of a country where many groups were physically isolated form one another\, yet shared a common language and spirit.
