His is the road-worn voice rising over the grind of a tube-amped dumpster guitar\, and the wild double pitches of throat singing. From Lorenz’ penchant for thrift and ingenuity comes this full-length Signature Sounds debut of original rock anthems\, mountain ballads\, blues manifestos and dance-hall festivity. It is magnificent\, rousing\, image-driven songwriting\, laid out on instruments built of broken bottles\, thrift store forks\, dried bones\, gas cans\, shoes\, saw blades\, a toy keyboard\, salvaged instruments\, and an overhead compartment’s worth of luggage.  \n \nMatt was raised in Cavendish\, Vermont\, the son of schoolteachers. He learned to sing by copying his sister Kate; the siblings are two-thirds of the touring trio Rusty Belle. Lorenz graduated from Hampshire College in Amherst\, Massachusetts\, in 2004\, having taught himself to throat-sing\, inspired by a South Indian cooking class. On moving day\, he pulled a guitar\, filled with mold and worse for wear\, from a dorm dumpster. He fixed it up and started pulling songs out of it. That was the beginning.    \nSince then\, The Suitcase Junket has built a powerful fan base in his native New England and far beyond. \nThe latest album from The Suitcase Junket\, Mean Dog\, Trampoline is populated by characters in various states of reverie: leaning on jukeboxes\, loitering on dance floors\, lying on the bottoms of empty swimming pools in the sun. Despite being deeply attuned to the chaos of the world\, singer/songwriter/ multi instrumentalist Matt Lorenz imbues those moments with joyful wonder\, an endless infatuation with life’s most subtle mysteries. And as its songs alight on everything from Joan Jett to moonshine to runaway kites\, Mean Dog\, Trampoline makes an undeniable case for infinite curiosity as a potent antidote to jadedness and despair. \nProduced by Steve Berlin (Jackie Greene\, Rickie Lee Jones\, Leo Kottke) of Los Lobos\, Mean Dog\, Trampoline marks a deliberate departure from the self recorded\, homespun approach of The Suitcase Junket’s previous efforts. In creating the album\, Lorenz pulled from a fantastically patchwork sonic palette\, shaping his songs with elements of jangly folk\, fuzzed out blues\, oddly textured psych rock. Engineered by Justin Pizzoferrato (Dinosaur Jr.\, Speedy Ortiz) and mixed by Vance Powell (Jack White\, Houndmouth)\, Mean Dog\, Trampoline rightly preserves The Suitcase Junket’s unkempt vitality\, but ultimately emerges as his most powerfully direct album so far.

DESCRIPTION:The Individualist Tour\nPeoples Bank Theatre welcomes legendary songwriter\, musician\, interactive artist\, producer and nominee for the Rock N’ Roll Hall Of Fame\, Todd Rundgren. \nBorn and raised in Philadelphia\, Rundgren began playing guitar as a teenager\, going on to found and front Nazz\, the quintessential `60s psychedelic group. In 1969\, he left the band to pursue a solo career\, recording his debut offering\, Runt. But it was 1972’s seminal Something/Anything?\, on which he played all the instruments\, sang all the vocal parts\, and acted as his own producer\, that catapulted Todd into the superstar limelight\, prompting the press to unanimously dub him ‘Rock’s New Wunderkind’. It was followed by such landmark LPs as The Hermit of Mink Hollow and A Wizard\, A True Star\, as well as such hit singles as I Saw The Light\, Hello It’s Me\, Can We Still Be Friends\, and Bang The Drum. \nRundgren’s myriad production projects include albums by Patti Smith\, Cheap Trick\, the Psychedelic Furs\, Meatloaf\, and XTC. Rounding out his reputation as rock’s renaissance man\, Rundgren composed all the music and lyrics for Joe Papp’s 1989 Off-Broadway production of Joe Orton’s Up Against It (the screenplay was commissioned by the Beatles for what was meant to be their third film). He also has composed the music for the hit film Dumb and Dumber\, as well as a number of television series\, including Pee Wee’s Playhouse and Crime Story. \nRundgren penned his first ever autobiography\, released December 2018\, reflecting on both his phenomenal career as well as his rollercoaster of a personal life with pages of recollections\, structured into bite-sized single-page three-paragraph chapters\, about encounters with rock royalty including Janis Joplin\, Brian Wilson\, Ringo Starr\, Patti Smith\, The NY Dolls\, and Meat Loaf along with numerous photos never before published. \nIn conjunction with the release\, Rundgren will be embarking on the world’s first hybrid concert/book tour this coming spring\, highlighting both hits and “deep tracks” spanning his 50- year career\, which will include shows in North America\, the UK\, Europe\, and Japan. \nConsistent with his history of innovation\, Todd writes in the introduction to his book: “So in order to get myself and the reader through this process with a minimum of chaos\, the book will take on the form of this page: [paragraph #1] a recollection of something that I witnessed\, [paragraph #2] a subjective assessment of my state of mind in either experiencing or remembering the episode (or a haphazard combination of both)\, and as in this 3rd paragraph\, a conclusion\, a statement of plain facts or simply soap-box proselytizing. DESCRIPTION:Connie Smith is considered by many to be one of the best vocalists in country music history.  “Once a Day\,” “Just in Time\,” “Then and Only Then\,” and “Ain’t Had No Lovin’\,” are just a few of her many hits.  This Country Music Hall of Fame inductee has earned 11 Grammy nominations\, and landed on the Billboard Top Ten country singles charts 20 times. \nA Hall of Fame Lifetime of Singing\nDolly Parton once noted\, famously\, that there were just three real female singers around—Barbra Streisand\, Linda Ronstadt\, and Connie Smith. “The rest of us\,” she said\, “are only pretending.” It’s less-well known that when Connie Smith was introduced to Keith Richards\, he grabbed fellow Connie Smith fan (and Rolling Stone) Ron Wood and brought him up to meet her\, too\, exclaiming “She’s the real deal!” \nWhat the singers she’s been influencing for decades spot in Connie Smith’s performances—besides her genius for phrasing\, perfect diction and a vocal range which have all long been envied—is her fervent joy in singing itself\, her love for the emotional and physical act of letting loose a song\, which is as evident on her recordings as it is in front of audiences at the Grand Ole Opry\, on RFD TV’s weekly Marty Stuart Show\, or on the road. \nIn 2012\, Connie’s singular contributions to country music were recognized conclusively when she received the field’s highest honor\, induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Connie Smith is one of country music’s most admired artists not because of one of her talents\, but because of how they form such a distinct whole.” \nMerle Haggard said\, as he conducted her induction her into the\, “I can’t remember any of Connie’s records that I didn’t like. I admire her sincerity and her spirit and her commitment to traditional country music. If you’re talking about a country singer\, there just isn’t any better.” \nMerle singled out “Long Line of Heartaches\,” Connie’s most recent recording\, as a special favorite. In recent decades\, the appearance of a new Connie Smith record has been a rare\, much-anticipated event; Long Line of Heartaches on Sugar Hill\, is her first since 1996 and only her second since 1978\, and her 53rd album to date. Still the urge to sing and share the joy she finds in doing it has never waned. \n“I may have put off making a new record for quite a while\,” Connie says\, “but I still love to sing just as much as I ever did. I really feel that it’s my destiny; I heard the saying\, one time\, ‘Do what God tells you ’til he tells you something else\,’ and He hasn’t told me anything else yet. So I think I’ll still be singing till I hear different!” \nWhat she sings on this return to disc is the same broad range of traditional country moods\, themes\, rhythms and sounds that marked her remarkable run of hit records and classic country albums in the 1960s and ’70s. Keeping that music alive\, well and in the public ear was an important motivation in breaking this most recent recording hiatus: \n“I feel so fortunate to have been introduced to Nashville in the early sixties. It was a magical time in country music; country artists were encouraged to bring their individuality and culture to the microphone\, not to back away from them\, and the songwriters of the era were just the best. But I feel that the music as it was has been slipping away—and much\, much faster than I’m ready for. The only thing I know to do about it now is to keep singing what I’ve always loved.” \nConnie has always been the sort of singer who\, much as Frank Sinatra did in saloon singer pop\, emphasizes crediting the writers who created the emotionally direct songs she chooses to sing. Songs by songwriters she’s long favored\, including icons Bill Anderson\, Harlan Howard\, Johnny Russell\, Kostas\, and Dallas Frazier (whose “A Heart Like You” on this record was one of the first he’d written in 30 years\, and the 69th Frazier song Connie’s had on record) are featured on this new release. Her own songwriting\, which had been something she’d found little time for early in her career\, came more to the foreground when she began co-writing with Marty Stuart; five of their collaborations appear on Long Line of Heartaches\, including the title track. \n“I had written a few of the songs I and others had recorded over the years\, but I’d never even begun to think I could write enough to do a whole album. Marty believed I could. We found other good songs\, too; it can be a bad idea to only do your own songs. I don’t cut a song because Bill\, Harlan\, Dallas or I wrote it\, I cut it because I think it’s the best song that I can find at the time.” \n“If I hadn’t had Marty as producer and Mick Conley\, as outr engineer\, working with me\, this record couldn’t have happened like it did. When we got 5 of the songs Marty and I wrote coupled with the 7 great songs from other writers\, we got serious and knew it was time to record. The songs had to come first. Then the work was just a joy. \nA first-time occurrence on this album is the appearance of Connie’s daughters Julie\, Jeanne and Jodi with her\, adding striking family harmonies to the contemporary hymn “Take My Hand.” “My five kids all know every word to every one of my songs\,” Connie notes\, “and we always sang at home. You’ll hear that my daughters are really good; they just never had the desire to be professionals. Neither did my two sons\, Darren and Kerry\, who also sing well.” \nThat Connie Smith always prioritized family life over career (and with no conflict about that\, she notes) is one reason she may be better known in the households of long-time traditional country music lovers than some others. She’d taken a break from appearances and recording to raise those kids\, and\, as she puts it “never went back into business in full force\,” though she has been a much-loved mainstay at the Grand Ole Opry. \nIt is a Nashville legend that Connie’s first record\, the aching and unforgettable “Once a Day\,” written by Bill Anderson and recorded on July 16\, 1964 when she was just 23\, became one of the most celebrated singles in country music history—the first debut single by a female country singer to go to Number One\, a position it held for eight weeks. Forty-seven years later it is still the only first single ever to have done that. When Connie sang “Once A Day” in the all-star B-movie musical Second Fiddle to a Steel Guitar the following year\, she was introduced on-screen as “The Cinderella of Country Music.” “Once A Day\,” and her stunning rendition of “How Great Thou Art” remain the two most requested songs by her fans to this day. Connie’s memorable string of hits would include “You and Your Sweet Love” “If It Ain’t Love” “Where Is My Castle?” “Run Away Little Tears” “Just One Time” and “I Never Once Stopped Loving You.” \nThe passion for singing and for the songs\, and the singular vocal precision in delivering them that marked those standards-to-be are fully on display in this return to recording. “If you add up all the songs on this album\,” Connie Smith says\, “it would add up to my personality. For the first time a new stereo remix\, created by British musician and producer Steven Wilson from the 16-track multi-track tapes\, made it possible to bring out elements that were muffled or submerged in the mix. The result is a new stereo version of CHICAGO II that boasts clearness\, punch and definition that it didn’t have before. It has recently been released by Rhino Records on CD and vinyl. \nCHICAGO’s award-winning documentary film\, Now More Than Ever: The History Of Chicago premiered on CNN. The documentary film was originally shown at the Sedona International Film Festival in February\, 2016\, and won the Film Festival’s Best of Fest Audience Choice Award. The band opened the festival with back-to-back sold-out performances. \nAdditionally\, Now More Than Ever: The History of Chicago won three awards in April\, 2016\, at the 10th Annual Fort Myers Beach Film Festival\, taking home top prizes in the Documentary and Audience Award categories. Director Peter Pardini was awarded the festival’s Rising Star Award in direction and was on hand to accept all three awards. Earlier that month the documentary was the runner-up for Audience Award at the Sarasota Film Festival. \nChicago’s newest record of new studio tracks\, “NOW” CHICAGO XXXVI\, was released on Frontiers Records. It includes eleven brand new songs\, recorded on the road. Chicago has built a new recording system that is flexible\, portable\, powerful and musical. This new “recording rig” travels with the band. They have even created an online collaboration portal that allows even more performances to be worked on around the clock from remote locations. If Skaggs’ burgeoning trophy case full of awards wasn’t already enough evidence enough of that fact\, consider that legendary guitarist Chet Atkins once credited Skaggs with “single-handedly saving country music.” His life’s path has taken him to various musical genres\, from where it all began in bluegrass music\, to striking out on new musical journeys\, while still leaving his musical roots intact. Skaggs legendary album\, Bluegrass Rules! swept major music awards\, topped the charts\, and cemented his reputation for bringing the genre to the masses. He\, along with Kentucky Thunder\, are 8-time winners of the International Bluegrass Music Association Instrumental Group of the Year. Skaggs struck his first chords on a mandolin over 50 years ago\, and he continues to do his part to lead the recent roots revival in music. Clearly his passion for it puts him in the position to bring his lively\, distinctively American form of music out of isolation and into the ears and hearts of audiences across the country and around the world. Ricky Skaggs is always forging ahead with cross-cultural\, genre-bending musical ideas and inspirations. \nA Lifetime of Music\nWith 12 consecutive Grammy-nominated classics behind him\, all from his own Skaggs Family Records label (Bluegrass Rules! in 1998\, Ancient Tones in 1999\, History of the Future in 2001\, Soldier of the Cross\, Live at the Charleston Music Hall\, and Big Mon: The Songs of Bill Monroe in 2003\, Brand New Strings in 2005\, Instrumentals in 2007\, Salt of the Earth with The Whites in 2008\, Honoring the Fathers of Bluegrass: Tribute to 1946 and 1947 in 2009 and Ricky Skaggs Solo: Songs My Dad Loved along with Mosaic in 2010)\, the diverse and masterful tones made by the gifted Skaggs come from a life dedicated to playing music that is both fed by the soul and felt by the heart. \nRicky was born on July 18\, 1954 in Cordell\, Kentucky\, and received his first mandolin at the age of five after his father\, Hobert\, heard him harmonizing with his mother from across the house as he played with his toys. Two weeks after teaching him the G\, C and D chords\, Hobert returned from working out of town shocked to see his young son making chord changes and singing along. He soon earned a reputation among the locals in his community. When the legendary Bill Monroe came to Martha\, Kentucky for a performance\, the crowd wouldn’t let up until “Little Ricky Skaggs” got up to play. The father of bluegrass called six- year-old Skaggs up and placed his own mandolin around his neck\, adjusting the strap to fit his small frame. No one could have imagined what a defining moment that would be in the life of the young prodigy. By age seven\, Skaggs performed with bluegrass legends Flatt & Scruggs on their popular syndicated television show\, for which he earned his first paycheck for a musical performance. \nIn 1971\, he entered the world of professional music full-time with his friend\, the late country singer\, Keith Whitley\, when the two young musicians were invited to join the band of bluegrass patriarch Ralph Stanley. Ricky soon began to build a reputation for creativity and excitement through live appearances and recordings with acts such as J.D. Crowe & the New South. He performed on the band’s 1975 debut album for Rounder Records\, which is widely regarded as one of the most influential bluegrass albums ever made. A stint as a bandleader with Boone Creek followed\, bringing the challenges of leadership while giving him further recording and performing experience. \nIn the late 1970’s\, Ricky turned his attention to country music. Though still in his 20’s\, the wealth of experience and talent he possessed served him well\, first as a member of Emmylou Harris’ Hot Band and later as an individual recording artist on his own. With the release of Waitin’ for the Sun to Shine in 1981\, Skaggs reached the top of the country charts and remained there throughout most of the 1980’s\, resulting in a total of 12 #1 hits. In 1982\, he became a member of the Grand Ole Opry\, the youngest to ever be inducted at that time. As his popularity soared\, he garnered eight awards from the Country Music Association (CMA)\, including “Entertainer of the Year” in 1985\, four Grammy Awards and dozens of other honors. These achievements also placed him front and center in the neo-traditionalist movement\, bringing renewed vitality and prominence to a sound that had been somewhat subdued by the commercialization of the ‘Urban Cowboy’ fad. Renowned guitarist and producer\, Chet Atkins\, even credited Skaggs with “single-handedly” saving country music. \nIn 1997\, after Ricky’s then-current recording contract was coming to an end\, he made the decision to establish his own record label – Skaggs Family Records. Since then\, Skaggs and his band Kentucky Thunder have released an amazing 12 consecutive Grammy-nominated classics (8 of which went on to earn the revered award) while also opening the label to a variety of other musical artists\, all the time keeping emphasis on bluegrass and other forms of roots music. Ricky and Skaggs Family Records have had the privilege of working with many musical talents\, including the Del McCoury Band\, Jerry and Tammy Sullivan\, Blue Highway\, The Whites\, Mountain Heart\, Melonie Cannon\, Ryan Holladay\, Keith Sewell\, Cherryholmes and Cadillac Sky. \nRicky’s first release for Skaggs Family Records\, Bluegrass Rules!\, set a new standard for bluegrass\, breaking new sales records in the genre\, winning Skaggs his sixth Grammy Award and earning the International Bluegrass Music Association’s (IBMA) Album of the Year Award. In 1999\, his second all-bluegrass album\, Ancient Tones\, won a Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album – his second consecutive Grammy in that same category. Just one year later\, Ricky won his eighth Grammy Award in the Best Southern\, Country or Bluegrass Gospel Album category for Soldier of the Cross\, his first all-gospel project with his band Kentucky Thunder. \nRicky made further progress with the release of his fourth bluegrass album in 2000\, Big Mon: The Songs of Bill Monroe\, a project which featured an all-star cast of musicians ranging from Dolly Parton\, Patty Loveless and Travis Tritt to Joan Osborne\, John Fogerty and Bruce Hornsby\, and celebrated the music and the life of Ricky’s mentor\, Bill Monroe. Big Mon received much critical acclaim\, including a Grammy nomination for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals. The album was re-released by Lyric Street Records in 2002 under a new name\, Ricky Skaggs and Friends Sing the Songs of Bill Monroe. His fifth bluegrass album\, History of the Future (2001)\, a timeless collection of both traditional bluegrass standards and newly conceived acoustic gems received rave reviews and industry accolades\, including a Grammy nomination for Best Bluegrass Album and an IBMA nomination for Album of the Year\, once again placing Skaggs among the leading innovators in the genre. \nSkaggs’ first all-live album with Kentucky Thunder\, Live at the Charleston Music Hall (2003) led to an IBMA Award for Instrumental Group of the Year – an award Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder has taken home 8 times in the last decade. The decision to record a live album was an obvious one for Skaggs. From a string of high-profile tour dates with the Dixie Chicks in 2000\, to his position as host of the unprecedented “All*Star Bluegrass Celebration” which aired nationwide on PBS in 2002\, to his participation in the wildly successful 41-city ‘Down from the Mountain’ tour – Ricky has become one of bluegrass’ most dynamic and sought-after live performers. Live at the Charleston Music Hall was honored in 2004 with a Grammy Award for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group for the Harley Allen-penned track\, “A Simple Life.” \nHe counts the current configuration of Kentucky Thunder among the best group of musicians he has ever worked with. “This group of guys meets my approval every night\,” Ricky says. “Each and every one of the pickers in Kentucky Thunder totally amazes me in every show…and that\, to me\, outweighs any award we could ever win.” The all-star lineup of Kentucky Thunder includes Paul Brewster (tenor vocals\, rhythm guitar)\, Russ Carson (banjo)\, Jake Workman (lead guitar)\, Mike Barnett (fiddle)\, Dennis Parker (baritone vocals\, guitar) and Jeff Picker (bass\, bass vocals). \nIn 2005\, Ricky earned his 10th career Grammy (Best Bluegrass Album) for Brand New Strings – a beautiful collection of music featuring four Skaggs originals as well as several tunes by some of his most admired contemporaries\, including Harley Allen\, Guy Clark and Shawn Camp. In 2006\, Skaggs was honored with a Grammy Award – this time in the Best Musical Album for Children category – for his contribution to Songs from the Neighborhood: the Music of Mister Rogers. Greater success followed with the release of Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder Instrumentals\, an album of all-original\, all- instrumental material in the fall of 2006. Praised by fans and critics alike as a landmark album for Skaggs\, Instrumentals debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s bluegrass album chart and earned Ricky his 12th career Grammy Award (Best Bluegrass Album). \nCross pollination has been a mainstay throughout Ricky’s career\, from his weekly collaborations with various artists as host of The Nashville Network’s Monday Night Concerts in the 1990’s to his recent pairings with Bruce Hornsby and The Whites. Released in March of 2007\, Ricky Skaggs and Bruce Hornsby (Sony/Legacy) drew from the deep roots in mountain music – adding piano and Hornsby’s inimitable songwriting to the core bluegrass lineup of mandolin\, guitar\, bass\, fiddle and banjo. A major ‘CMT Crossroads’ special coincided with the album’s release. \nHis next recorded project\, released in September of 2007 on Skaggs Family Records\, was a literal family affair. After years of blending their voices from the living room to the stage\, Ricky Skaggs and The Whites teamed up for their first collaborative gospel album\, Salt of the Earth\, which resulted in a 13th career Grammy Award for Best Southern\, Country or Bluegrass Gospel Album\, followed by a Gospel Music Association Dove Award for Bluegrass Recorded Album of the Year and Inspirational Country Music Awards for Musician of the Year as well as Mainstream Country Artist of the Year and Inspirational Bluegrass Artist of the Year (with The Whites). \nIn 2008\, Skaggs paid tribute to the man he has often referred to as his “musical father”\, Bill Monroe\, and the original lineup of the Bluegrass Boys (Earl Scruggs\, Lester Flatt\, Chubby Wise and Howard Watts) with the release of Honoring the Fathers of Bluegrass: Tribute to 1946 and 1947\, earning a 14th career Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album. \nA musical father in his own right\, Skaggs continued on the full circle path with the addition of a ReIssue Series of his groundbreaking country music masterworks to the Skaggs Family Records catalog in 2009. Beginning with 1982’s Highways & Heartaches\, and followed by 1981’s Waitin’ for the Sun to Shine and 1983’s Don’t Cheat in Our Hometown\, the ReIssue Series will include nine albums total and includes bonus retrospectives with each release\, which feature Ricky\, in his own words\, sharing never-before-told stories about the making of each project. \nSkaggs’ first-ever solo album\, Ricky Skaggs Solo: Songs My Dad Loved (2009)\, celebrated the man that caused him to fall in love with music – his father\, Hobert Skaggs. He elaborates\, “If I could’ve gotten my dad into the studio\, this is how I would’ve wanted him to sound.” Playing every instrument and singing every note on the album\, Ricky brought raw\, emotional honesty to the songs. By coming home to the music that meant so much to him as a child\, Ricky tapped into a wellspring of passion that is channeled into every tune\, as though he willed himself back to his family’s house in Kentucky. Solo was honored in the American roots field with a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Folk Album in 2010. \nRicky Skaggs’ album\, Mosaic (2010)\, marked a return to a full band sound that mixed elements of Country music with Beatles-esque melody and lyrics that spoke to Skaggs’ faith\, “making music that is in my head and in my heart\,” as Ricky said. Grammy winning songwriter/producer Gordon Kennedy\, who co-wrote Eric Clapton’s “Change the World\,” was instrumental as co-producer and writer. This most special album hooks the heart\, as the sounds invite you in to take notice and come closer. They blended their talents and love of music with their love for the Lord to create this distinctive collaboration of writing and talent\, unparalleled in strength of genius. The song\, “Return to Sender” from Mosaic was nominated for a Grammy for Best Gospel Song\, and the album was a contender for Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album at the 53rd Grammy Awards\, receiving major critical acclaim. \nMarking Ricky’s 50th year in music was the release of Country Hits Bluegrass Style (2011)\, a compilation of many of Skaggs’ #1 country hits and fan favorites played in a bluegrass style. Combining his country and bluegrass roots along with Ricky’s impeccable tenor voice\, his eight time IBMA Instrumental Band of the Year\, Kentucky Thunder\, and some of Ricky’s original award-winning country band alumni together with special friends added to the magic of this release. \nLong awaited by country and bluegrass music fans alike\, Music To My Ears (2012) included fresh new bluegrass tunes co-written by Skaggs along with a brand new instrumental. Many bluegrass standards were incorporated and added to its charm. The album featured a duet with Ricky Skaggs and Barry Gibb (of Bee Gees fame) on deeply moving “Soldier’s Son\,” along with a new bluegrass treasure “You Can’t Hurt Ham\,” inspired by a true story of Mr. Bill Monroe. \nIn 2013\, music legends Ricky Skaggs and Bruce Hornsby came together again for a live album\, titled Cluck Ol’ Hen. Bluegrass treasures and lively expanded hits are to be discovered on this fresh collection of songs from the masterful duo of Skaggs and Hornsby. These live songs were originally recorded when the two music icons first hit the tour circuit together. This first-ever studio album was produced by Skaggs and White and features the couple dueting on handpicked country love songs. \nAs a musician\, Skaggs is a brilliant traditionalist but is also willing to mix genres\, recording and touring with many different artists such as Bruce Hornsby and Ry Cooder. With dates in 2015\, Ry Cooder\, Sharon White and Ricky Skaggs embarked upon the critically acclaimed ‘Cooder-White-Skaggs – Songs for the Good People’ tour that featured the trio singing gospel\, blues and country along with superior musicianship. Backing the trio was Mark Fain on bass\, Ry’s son Joachim Cooder on drums\, with Sharon’s father Buck White on piano and sister Cheryl White’s harmony vocals. Stops crossing the country included Berklee Performance Center in Boston and Carnegie Hall in New York\, with tour dates continuing into 2016. Most recently\, Skaggs has added Country tour dates as he plugs in and plays full shows of his chart-topping hits \nSkaggs has also demonstrated wizardry in the studio\, producing not only his records but sets from acts such as The Whites and Dolly Parton\, as well as the recent Love Remains disc from Hillary Scott & The Scott Family\, which won him his 15th Grammy for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album as a producer. \nAll of these talents and gifts has culminated in country music’s greatest honor\, as Skaggs was chosen to be forever immortalized in the prestigious Country Music Hall of Fame as a member of the class of 2018. \nJohnny Staats & The Delivery Boys\n \nBorn and raised in West Virginia Johnny Staats caught the bluegrass bug early. With his mother playing piano\, his father playing guitar\, and his sister on the banjo\, it seemed only natural that he would get his first mandolin at the age of seven. By the age of nine\, he was in his first band\, and in his teens he began appearing at local competitions. When he graduated from high school in 1988\, he married and took a job as a U.P.S. deliveryman\, but he continued to play and attend bluegrass festivals in his spare time. He won he Ohio State Guitar Championship in 1992 and again in 1993. In 1995\, his Crossroads Band won the band competition at Winterhawk\, NY\, and he won the guitar competition at MerleFest. He took the mandolin championship a the Vandalia Gathering in Charleston\, WV\, in 1996\, 1997\, and 1999; in 1997\, he also won the guitar championship and came in third in the fiddle championship. With that\, he was featured on the Mountain Stage radio series and people in Nashville began touting his talents. After recording a series of demos with Nashville bluegrass stars\, he was signed to Giant Records\, which released his debut album\, Wires & Wood\, in 2000. “Wires and Wood” demonstrates Johnny’s dazzlling mandolin and expressive voice with a stellar cast of bluegrass legends including: John Cowan\, Sam Bush\, Jerry Douglas\, Jim Hurst\, and Tim O’Brien. Other co-stars on the CD were Sara Evans and Kathy Mattea. \nTo date\, Staats continues to head out every day in his big brown UPS truck\, and no matter how busy he gets with his music\, folks around Sandyville\, West Virginia area can still count on Johnny to deliver right on time.

Born to ponder and observe life\, each of his songs tells a story. Whether drawn from personal experience or a tale of poetically woven fiction\, you’ll live every second of it through his songs. \nNow\, Todd Burge is releasing two original albums – one from 2018 and one for 1986 – as double CD package. Todd Burge (1986 The First Album) is his never-released debut record\, and the second\, Your Reflection Will Kill You\, is his latest work recorded by Don Dixon (James McMurtry\, REM). They are a pair of now-and-then sonic bookends\, both opposite and yet intertwined as a collection of stories that brought Burge to where he is today. \nDescribing it as a victim of record industry red tape\, Burge says that “the 1986 album was probably the second or third time I was ever in a studio. It’s a rock and roll record with bits of punk. I’m not surprised at how it sounds when I listen to it now\, because I know I was filled with angst back then. Maybe that’s what I needed it to be when I was recording that music. Now I listen to it as if someone else created it\, and it really helped me decide which songs would go on the new record.”  \nA few years and a few experiences later\, Your Reflection Will Kill You\, shows that\, like good whiskey\, Burge is refined with time. On the making of the new record\, Burge tells us\, “I wanted to be as comfortable as possible\, so I asked Don Dixon (James McMurtry\, REM) to come to my home. Don is a master at capturing a live recording session and making everyone feel comfortable. He has a great set of ears and great taste. You can trust his opinion\, and that is important as\, after a while\, when I record\, I don’t trust my own. \n“The only rule I brought to the table was that we would not use anything but our acoustic instruments. Steel string guitar for me\, nylon for Ryan (Kennedy)\, upright acoustic for John (Inghram). See\, I have this emotional attachment to that sound that dates back to when I was five or six years old\, back when I was still taking naps\, I think. I would ask my mother to play Roger Miller’s greatest hits. You know Roger Miller’s “King of the Road”? Miller played a nylon string guitar. It’s a sound you don’t hear often in country music\, but Roger Miller was not typical. I’ve been a huge fan of Willie Nelson’s since I was in grade school as well. Another nylon string guitar player. That guitar sound is just embedded in me. It moves me more than most sounds do.” \n“With wit and pathos in equal measure\, Todd Burge takes on subjects in his songs that never occur to most folks. His compelling vocal style and unique perspective keep me interested long after the last note rings out.”-Engineer- Don Dixon \nWilliam Matheny\nIt’s fitting that William Matheny has chosen to honor the 15th anniversary of Centro-matic’s tour de force album Love You Just the Same on his new 7-inch: The 2003 full-length from Will Johnson’s four-piece was one of the most acclaimed releases from Misra Records’ first five years\, and Matheny has emerged as one of the label’s standard-bearers as it enters closes in on the end of its second decade. \nThe tribute takes the form of a cover of “Flashes and Cables\,” the now-classic from Love You\, on the A-side of Matheny’s single. Matheny’s spin is\, like so many memorable covers\, faithful to the original up to a point—he chose to keep the dramatic shifts in dynamics and picked up the pace only a pinch—but diverges just enough to make it distinct. Gone is Johnson’s martial drumbeat in favor of Matheny’s Spector-informed\, lazy swung backbeat. In lieu of Centro-matic’s slow disintegration and off-kilter keys\, we get a triumphant guitar solo worthy of J. Mascis as the song winds down. Quality songwriting isn’t threatened by interpretation\, and in this new interpretation you’re bound to glimpse aspects of Johnson’s song you overlooked before. \nOf course\, it doesn’t hurt when the interpreter is a top-notch songwriter as well: Matheny\, on the heels of 2017’s Strange Constellations LP and last spring’s EP “Moon Over Kenova\,” is a breakout voice in country-rock\, and keeps on proving it. The B-side of the new single\, “Christian Name\,” manages to turn variations on a theme into three or four distinct hooks\, any one of which would have been enough for most songsmiths to hang their hat on. Tom Petty is in there somewhere beneath the world-weary country-rock exterior\, but so is the dark-tinged bluesy folk of Lucinda Williams. \nFor some\, Matheny’s tribute to Centro-matic will represent a nostalgic trip; for others it may be an entrée into the music of both Misra mainstays. The thing is\, either way\, it’s a pair of tracks worthy of play on repeat: Two gems with equal parts twang and tremolo\, clever riffs and thoughtful words\, delivered with deceptive ease. \nAdam Remnant\nAdam Remnant came up over the last decade fronting the folk-rock band Southeast Engine. As the principal singer and songwriter of the band\, Remnant and his bandmates garnered critical acclaim from publications such as Paste Magazine\, Pitchfork\, NPR\, American Songwriter\, Magnet\, Stereogum\, PopMatters\, AV Club\, and many more. They established a substantial following over the years\, releasing five albums and touring across the United States and Canada. \nAs Southeast Engine wound down\, Remnant began plotting his way forward as a solo artist. He assembled a little studio in his basement and earnestly began writing & recording the songs that comprise the 2016 EP\, When I Was a Boy\, as well as the new full-length\, Sourwood. Remnant’s signature baritone voice and literary songwriting act as the focal point in the productions spanning between folk\, rock\, and indie sounds mined from a Midwest basement. \nSourwood is a record long in the making. In the intervening years since Southeast Engine\, Remnant and his wife\, Amanda\, became parents to two curly blond-haired girls\, which they raise in the fertile creative town of Athens\, Ohio. Located in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains\, it’s here that Remnant pursues his musical visions while tending to daily matters. The songs of Sourwood were birthed in that intersection of youth and adulthood where dreams and realities confront one another.  The songs detail the desire to find potential opportunities beyond the horizon while feeling the gravity of home. The album drifts back and forth between those push & pull forces of home and travel as one might drift between a waking and dream state. Somewhere between those two states is a place called Sourwood. \nThe album is largely recorded and performed by Adam Remnant with contributions from Remnant’s working band\, consisting of brother\, Jesse Remnant\, on bass and harmony vocals; Ryan Stolte-Sawa on violin and harmony vocals\, and Jon Helm on drums. Adam and the band are touring in support of the release.

Collin Raye released a legacy CD in May 2018 entitled 25 Years\, 25 Hits. \n \nCollin Raye is nothing if not passionate. His soulful delivery has set country standards in such searing ballads as “Love\, Me\,” “In This Life\,” “Not That Different” and “If I were you”. Always an energizing showman\, he has also blazed through such vivid rockers as “My Kind of Girl\,” “That’s My Story\,” “I Can Still Feel You” and “I Want You Bad.” \n \nCollin shot to fame with “Love\, Me” in 1991. Collin wrote a very special song for Haley called\, “She’s with me”\, which carries a powerful message for families of special needs children. Additionally\, in 2011 Collin released his first inspirational album\, His Love Remains\, which quickly shot to #1 on Amazon for inspirational and religious music. Collin continues to perform his traditional country music across America and abroad and has added Christian and Catholic concerts to his tour schedule as well. His autobiography\, That’s My Story: The Undefeated Life of Collin Raye\, was released in 2014. He currently resides in Nashville\, TN with his daughter\, Britanny and granddaughter\, Mattie. \nProceeds of this concert will benefit Washington County foster children and foster parents.\n“Our vision for this benefit concert is to assist foster parents by providing funding to be used for normal childhood activities not covered by county funds\, in hopes of enhancing these children’s lives.” \n“Foster/adoptive caregivers are concerned individuals who are dedicated to providing the needs of Washington County’s children whose lives have been disrupted due to abuse and neglect. They offer food\, housing\, guidance\, acceptance\, understanding\, and support for children who are unable to stay with their families. Without these committed individuals\, abused and neglected children would not have a safe place to call home.” \nThe Pottmeyers\n \nSteve and Beverly Pottmeyer are entertainers bringing classic country and Americana style music to their venues. DESCRIPTION:Hot Rize has been astounding the bluegrass world with their fresh\, contemporary approach to traditional music ever since their formation in 1978. The band’s unique and progressive style of bluegrass\, powerful original songs\, tight-as-a-drum ensemble playing\, and dynamic stage show quickly made them stars on the major festival circuit and far beyond. In 1990\, Hot Rize won the first-ever International Bluegrass Association’s Entertainer of the Year Award and in 1991 they picked up a Grammy nomination for Best Bluegrass album and won IBMA Song of the Year. Since the 90s\, this all-star band has kept their legend alive by performing at only the most prestigious festivals (like Hardly Strictly Bluegrass​\, Telluride​\, Bonnaroo​\, and GreyFox​) and a few select venues. This crazy thing happens when you hire Hot Rize – everywhere they go\, the ever-popular Red Knuckles & The Trailblazers shows up as well. Invited or not\, at some point during the night\, they are going to take the stage and wow the crowd with their classic honky tonk and western music. Mattea’s dream almost ended\, though\, when she entered her 50s and found her voice changing. As much as she wanted to ignore the warning signs\, there was no getting around the fact that she simply wasn’t hitting the notes she used to. Taking the stage and giving anything less than her best wasn’t an option\, so as far as Mattea was concerned\, there were only two choices: re-learn to sing\, or walk away forever. \n“The hardest thing was facing the question of whether or not I could continue\,” she reflects. “I had to be willing to come to a ‘no\,’ to accept that my singing voice just might not be something I enjoyed anymore. There were days when I believed it was very likely I wouldn’t be able to go on.” \nMattea persevered\, though\, undergoing intensive vocal training and emerging with the most poignant album of her career\, ‘Pretty Bird.’ Recorded over the course of a year with roots music wizard Tim O’Brien at the helm\, ‘Pretty Bird’ draws its strength not only from Mattea’s touching performances\, but also from her uncanny ability to weave seemingly disparate material into a cohesive whole. These are the songs that helped her reclaim her voice\, and though they’re drawn from a wide swath of writers\, genres\, and eras\, she inhabits each as fully as if it were her own. Exquisitely arranged and delivered with the kind of nuance that can only come from a lifetime of heartbreak and triumph\, the album is a welcome reintroduction to one of country and Americana music’s most enduring and beloved figures. \nA West Virginia native\, Mattea moved to Nashville in the late 1970s to pursue her goal of singing professionally. She signed her first record deal in 1983 and achieved modest chart success with a pair of early releases\, but her true commercial breakout arrived with her critically acclaimed third album\, ‘Walk The Way The Wind Blows.’ That record produced her first radio hits\, and its follow-up\, 1987’s ‘Untasted Honey\,’ was the first of five Mattea releases to be certified gold. ‘Untasted Honey’ contained back-to-back #1 country singles\, as did 1989’s ‘Willow In The Wind\,’ which also earned back-to-back CMA Female Vocalist of the Year awards and a GRAMMY for Best Female Vocal Performance. The LA Times called Mattea “a performer of limitless potential\,” while the Washington Post hailed her as “one of Nashville’s finest song interpreters\,” and People described her as “warm\, strong\, smart and generally splendid.” Over the next three decades\, she would record nearly a dozen more albums exploring country\, folk\, Celtic\, and gospel music; earn her second GRAMMY Award; top the Bluegrass \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlbums chart and garner an additional GRAMMY nomination for ‘Coal\,’ her Marty Stuart-produced exploration of coal mining songs; and collaborate with everyone from Jackson Browne to Townes Van Zandt. \nBy the time she entered her 50s\, Mattea’s status as a legend was secure\, but the one thing she’d always been able to rely on felt like it was in serious danger of slipping away. \n“I kept noticing this shaky quality in my voice\,” she says. “I’d be onstage going for a note in a song I knew like the back of my hand and it wouldn’t come out. The way I knew how to sing just wasn’t working anymore.” \n \nSo began a years-long odyssey Mattea describes as her “dark night of the soul\,” a trying time of personal anguish and professional uncertainty that threatened to silence her permanently. Some nights her voice would be there in all its glory; other nights\, inexplicably\, notes would lie just beyond her grasp. The harder she tried\, the more she struggled\, and Mattea was forced to reckon with the possibility that her career might be over. \n“I kept running from it\, but eventually I realized I had to stop and deal with the issue head on\,” she explains. \nThe classically-trained Mattea dove into an exhaustive regimen with a new\, jazz- centric vocal coach\, developing a fresh approach to singing and forcing herself to break habits she’d relied on for her entire career. Most importantly\, she came to recognize the beauty in how her voice was changing. Age had helped open Mattea’s lower register like never before\, and songs she’d previously shied away from suddenly came to new\, vibrant life. \n“It was astounding to me\,” she reflects. “That’s when I really felt this vocal rebirthing process\, and it gave me great joy because there’s nothing that’s ever felt more right to me in my life than singing and making music.” \nAs her confidence returned\, Mattea and her longtime guitarist/collaborator Bill Cooley decided to take their weekly living room jam sessions on the road\, performing an extensive\, stripped-down duo tour of unexpected material and old favorites. It took courage for Mattea to get back on stage in the midst of her vocal training\, but the work paid off\, and as she learned to let go of the idea of “perfection”\, she stripped the power from the fear that had gripped her for so long and kept her from the stage. All that was left was to return to the studio. \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“I woke up in my bed at 2am one night and realized\, ‘Oh my God. I have to call Tim O’Brien\,’” Mattea remembers. “Tim is like a brother to me. We’ve worked together on each other’s records for years\, and he’s one of the most comfortable\, patient\, safe people to collaborate with that I’ve ever known.” \nWhile ‘Pretty Bird’ certainly reflects that comfort\, it also reflects the adventurous streak that’s long defined Mattea’s choice in song. The album opens with playful take on Oliver Wood’s sultry “Chocolate On My Tongue” before moving seamlessly into a soulful rendition of Bobbie Gentry’s “Ode To Billie Joe.” The Mary Gauthier-penned “Mercy Now” finds Mattea offering up a tender prayer for understanding in these troubled times\, while Joan Osborne’s “St. Teresa” takes on new life in light of the ravages that addiction has wrought on the singer’s home state. The arrangements on the album are earthy and organic\, but its most affecting moments arrive in stripped- down songs like the British traditional “He Moves Through The Fair” and the arresting title track\, a Hazel Dickens tune that boldly closes the record with Mattea’s rich\, a cappella voice. It’s that voice that saved her\, and it’s through singing Mattea hopes she can help others\, too. \n“I think there’s something sacred in this secular act of lifting our voices together\,” she explains. “When we sing together\, it doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from or who you voted for. We’re all having the same experience and expressing ourselves the same way\, and that’s where I want to plant my flag right now.” \nMore than simply rejuvenating her career\, recovering her voice presented Kathy Mattea with a new lease on her humanity. With an album as powerful as ‘Pretty Bird\,’ it’s clear she intends to make the most of it. \n \nLaurie & Eddie from Hey Mavis\n \nLaurie Michelle Caner (vocals\, banjo\, songwriting) is a homeschooling mom\, a songwriter\, and Ms. May in the 2015 Banjo Babes Calendar. She has been hailed as a role model for mothers who strive to honor their own artistic vision while continuing to raise a healthy family. Her banjo playing is of curious origin\, but beautifully serves as a foundation for her lyrics. Laurie’s songwriting tells the story of life—with all of it’s beauty\, heartache\, disappointment and joy—weaving a musical tapestry that speaks the truth of love\, life and the human condition. \nEddie Caner (violin\, viola profunda) spent a dozen years performing as a sideman in national touring bands and orchestras\, including Page & Plant\, Luciano Pavarotti\, Smokey Robinson\, and Natalie Cole. Eddie always amazes the audience with his Hendrix-like tone and precision—he can soar beautifully over Laurie’s vocals or play a raucous\, dirgy groove. He was once labeled by the legendary music critic Jane Scott as “the most versatile musician on the planet”. Eddie spends his free time as a physics instructor at Case Western Reserve University. \nHey Mavis has appeared on NPR’s Mountain Stage\, NPR’s Whad’ya Know?\, and PBS’s Songs from the Center. The group has performed standing-room-only shows at the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival as well as nine consecutive sell-out concerts in their hometown of Akron\, Ohio. In 2017\, Melissa Etheridge saw Hey Mavis perform at a benefit concert and recruited the group to perform on her 2018 music cruise.

The group’s multi-lingual concerts present new interpretations of songs from the ancient Samaritan community as well as compelling vocal and instrumental work from mid-20th century Arabic composers. Since the early 2000s\, Burge has concentrated on his singular brand of folk-pop storytelling. \nIn November of this year\, Burge will release two original albums that were recorded thirty-two years apart. Todd Burge (1986 The First Album) was recorded while Burge was still attending West Virginia University back in the mid-80s. The album got tangled up in some record industry politics and as a result\, never hit the music store bins. The new album\, recorded by Don Dixon (Mary Chapin-Carpenter\, REM) will be entitled Reflection (#ReflectionBurgeAlbum) and lyrically looks back on some facts and fiction that have brought Burge to where he is today. It’s an especially poignant look back at childhood — “exorcising some junior high school demons\,” as she puts it. \nLooking back is a new experience for Jill Sobule. Ever since she first caught mainstream attention with her 1995 song “I Kissed a Girl” — the first song about same-sex romance ever to crack the Billboard Top 20 (and no relation to the later Katy Perry tune) — she’s always pushed forward\, exploring new sounds and subject matter with each passing album and refusing to be pigeonholed by her early hits (which also include the ‘90s alt-rock anthem “Supermodel\,” featured in an iconic scene in the film Clueless). \nFor all its graceful\, funny and heartbreaking explorations of awkward youth and grown-up regrets\, Nostalgia Kills is as of-the-moment as anything in Jill Sobule’s catalog. Through her own experiences\, she explores issues our society still collectively struggles with (LGBTQ rights\, teen mental health\, our unhealthy obsession with staying forever young) and gently skewers our tendency to dwell on the past at the expense of addressing the present. As she sings on the title track: “We look at ourselves in a long row of mirrors/We get smaller and smaller with each passing year/We have to keep moving or die.” \n \nGurf Morlix\nOnce\, when asked by a promoter for a copy of his biography\, Gurf Morlix responded with just two words\, “Legendary integrity.”  He would later admit that his response was perhaps a bit pompous\, “but true\,” he added.  “Well\, half true anyway.”  The story is a telling one\, demonstrating not only Morlix’s directness\, which is famous amongst his musical colleagues – or perhaps infamous\, depending on who you ask – but also his dry sense of humor and no-bullshit approach to life\, music\, and the music business. \nHad he sent the promoter a more traditional bio\, it likely would have noted that Gurf was born outside Lackawanna\, New York (near Buffalo)\, saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan\, formed a band (in which Peter Case made his stage debut)\, moved to Los Angeles\, worked for more than a decade as Lucinda Williams’ guitarist\, band-leader and backing vocalist\, produced Lucinda’s acclaimed Sweet Old World and eponymous albums\, famously left Lucinda\, toured with Warren Zevon\, moved to Austin\, befriended Blaze Foley\, produced a number of classic Americana albums you likely own if you are any kind of Americana music fan\, played on many more albums you probably own if you fall into that category\, received the Americana Music Association’s “Instrumentalist of the Year” award\, went on to make seven critically acclaimed albums of his own\, and then toured the world supporting them.  He now continues to play live\, produce albums for artists that move him\, and make his own albums.  He even goes fishing every once in a while. \nOnline:\ngurfmorlix.com/\nFacebook

Join us for an evening of music and film with Fox Theatre organist Dave Calendine. \nThis FREE theatre organ concert is a celebration of the great music from the Broadway stage\, including Aladdin\, Beauty and the Beast\, Oklahoma\, South Pacific\, The Sound of Music\, Mary Poppins\, The Music man\, and The Phantom of the Opera. There will also be a Military Tribute. \nThe silent film feature is the Buster Keaton comedy\, “The Electric House.” \nTwo of the largest sternwheeler boats on the Ohio River—The Queen of the Mississippi and The American Queen—will arrive in Marietta on July 14\, 2018. \nAs a bonus\, on July 14\, historic downtown Marietta will play host to a variety of calliopes\, band organs\, and monkey organs.
