DESCRIPTION:A benefit concert for the Boys & Girls Club of Washington County \nDespite growing up in the small country town of Coshocton\, Ohio\, Allen carries an eclectic variety of musical influences like Def Leppard\, Garth Brooks\, Justin Timberlake\, Goo Goo Dolls and Neal McCoy but truly has his family’s musical history to thank for his uniquely edgy\, country infused sound\, “A lot of my family-members were singers. From 80’s rock to blues and modern country\, they covered it all.”\n\nAfter opening for Kip Moore\, the chart-topping Country rocker gave Allen the advice\, “Quit everything you’re doing\, move to Nashville and write your ass off\,” and Allen did exactly that. The very next day the hopeful singer-songwriter packed his things to seek out Music City for himself and within weeks was calling Nashville “home.”\n\nShortly after arriving in Music City\, the singer-songwriter signed a co-management deal with music industry veterans Herb Graham and Shawn Pennington\, followed by signing a publishing deal. At first glance this world seems vastly different than ours\, but a second glance reveals it is actually quite similar. \nAluminum pipes come to life right before the audience’s very eyes\, transforming into imaginary\, mysterious\, and playful characters. Much like in our world\, the aluminum universe is also plagued by a fight between good and evil\, where the forces of beauty and compassion strive to triumph over the forces of intrigue and fear. \nThe new show was written and directed by Lior Kalfo\, creator of the internationally successful shows “Voca People\,” “Fantasy\,” and “Glow\,” with choreography by Ido Tadmor\, one of Israel’s foremost choreographers\, and under the artistic direction of Ilan Azriel\, co-creator of the international Aluminum Show. \nThe show is suitable for all ages.

Michel salutes and interprets the Ol’ Blue Eyes standards. Michel has been called: \n“The closest thing to Sinatra we have ever heard” by “Variety.” \n \nMichel\, a master impressionist for more than 40 years\, has been touring his “Sinatra Forever” show around the country as well as internationally with performances in Canada\, Mexico and Chile. \nMichel has shared the stage with many celebrities including Rich Little\, Mickey Rooney\, John Byner and Sherman Hemsley; opened for comics such as Bobby Collins\, John Pinette\, Rita Rudner and George Wallace; and performed impersonations for such luminaries as Frank Sinatra\, President Gerald Ford\, Tony Curtis and Steve Allen. \nIn 1994\, Michel shared the spotlight with Rich Little playing Bob Hope to Little’s Bing Crosby and Jerry Lewis to his Dean Martin. Little called Michel “one of the best impressionists around today.” \nFor Michel\, a memorable highlight came when he performed his impression of Bob Hope for the comedic icon himself at the Bob Hope Celebrity Golf Classic in Palm Springs. He also made appearances in an episode of “Baywatch” playing a schizophrenic killer\, and on “Entertainment Tonight\,” “America’s Funniest People” and the “Larry King Show.” \nIn 1989\, Michel moved to Las Vegas. In 1999\, David Cassidy saw Michel performing his impression of Sinatra with a 22-piece orchestra and asked him to be the understudy for his show “The Rat Pack is Back” at the Desert Inn. He played the Sinatra\, Dean Martin and Joey Bishop roles\, and when the show moved to the Sahara in 2000\, played Martin for its 25-month run. \nGiving back to the community\, Michel is involved in several charity events including the Salvation Army Christmas Toys for Tots\, Fox 5 “Take 5 for Kids” Suitcase Drive\, Help Them Walk Again Foundation and Make a Difference Day.

DESCRIPTION:$25 / $30 / $35 \nPeoples Bank Theatre presents a special concert celebrating the album release for You and the World Outside by JD Hutchison on Howdy Skies Records\, produced by Tim O’Brien. \nTim O’Brien \n \nIt has been four years since Tim’s last solo recording. Between collaborations with Darrell Scott\, the recent Grammy-winning recording with Jerry Douglas’s Earls of Leicester and the rebooting of Hot Rize; he’s barely had time for a shower. Still\, somewhere in O’Brien’s vivid imagination\, the seeds of Pompadour began to sprout. The fruits of his recent wanderings\, music making and worldly observations have blossomed into eleven exquisitely varied\, true-to-life and above all musical tracks. \nEach of O’Brien’s solo albums has a distinctive identity. Many have specific themes\, including Red on Blonde\, an insightful collection of Bob Dylan compositions\, and his Grammy-winning celebration of Appalachian music and its Celtic roots\, Fiddler’s Green. So it is with Pompadour\, or at least most of it. “It’s kind of a breakup record\,” O’Brien says. “I separated from my wife four years ago and got divorced a year after that. So there’s a breakup\, an assessment and ultimately delight at the end.” \nWhat separates Pompadour from his previous thematic albums? O’Brien answers by looking back to his first nationally released album. “When I did Hard Year Blues\, a friend said\, ‘This is kind of like a Chinese menu; there are so many options here. What’s the theme?’ It was really eclectic. Now\, with Pompadour\, I’ve sort of melded things together\, like the flavors in a stew.” \nPompadour swirls together bits of bluegrass\, deep-roots Appalachian music\, field hollers\, old-school rock ‘n’ roll\, traditional jazz and even James Brownian funk. \nJD Hutchison \n \n  \nJ.D. Hutchison is a native of the Appalachian region of southeastern Ohio. He was born\, the second of four sons to John Williams and Emma Jane Harper Hutchison\, in a tiny three-room house located one mile west of the town square in the village of Barnesville. His was a musical family. His father was a well-known guitarist and fiddler in the community; he often appeared with his wife (J.D.’s mother) as a singing duo at public functions in the area. There seemed to be an unfailing congregation of local players nearby every week at someone-or-another’s house where a plentiful table would be at the ready and music would prevail until all were played out. These conditions imbued JD from early childhood with a strong affection and affinity for tradition-based string music.

SUMMARY:A Musical Salute to Randy Travis
DESCRIPTION:On September 16\, 1986\, country music legend Randy Travis performed at the Colony Theatre in Marietta\, Ohio\, just as his career was taking off. Almost 30 years later on Thursday September 15\, 2016\, at 7:30 p.m.\, Travis will return to the stage of the present-day Peoples Bank Theatre. Travis will not be performing\, due to a stroke he suffered three years ago\, but he will make an appearance to be honored and enjoy the show. Chuck Lipps\, VP of Rick Modesitt & Associates\, was a member of the opening band The Breeze at the 1986 show and opened many others for Travis from 1987 through 1997. He has continued his friendship with Travis over the years and is very proud that RMA could put this show together. \nThe show will feature The Randy Travis Band with special guest vocalist Kevin Denney. Opening the show will be two former members of the Breeze\, drummer Lipps and bass guitarist Ron Bevan\, along with lead guitarist Dave James and steel guitarist Gary Carter. Carter was in Travis’ band at the 1986 show. \n“To come full-circle almost 30 years to the date in the same venue is historic and certainly a part of country music history for Randy\, myself\, and the theatre’s executive director Hunt Brawley\,” Lipps says. “From 1986 CMA Horizon Award winner to 2016 Country Music Hall of Fame inductee\, Randy has cemented his place in country music forever\, and part of it started right here.” \nHaving Travis there in person is a miracle in itself. In July\, 2013\, he suffered a heart virus followed by a stroke that left him unable to sing. But with his intense therapy and determination\, he has made great strides and “giant baby steps” in his abilities in the past three years. \n“I was fortunate to visit with Randy this past December and again in May\, and I saw improvement over that time\,” Lipps adds. “His wife\, Mary\, is his rock. I truly believe he will sing again. I couldn’t think of a better way to honor him. He’s a big reason I’m still in the music business.” \nRick Modesitt & Associates is producing the show\, and all proceeds will go to the newly established Randy Travis Foundation for Viral Cardiomyopathy Detection\, Stroke Rehab and Music for Underprivileged Children. Since 1991 Bob Thompson has been the pianist\, and a regularly featured artist on West Virginia’s NPR syndicated radio show\, Mountain Stage. For the past twenty-three years he has also been co-producer and host of Joy to the World\, a holiday jazz show\, broadcast on public radio stations nationwide\, and heard internationally on the Voice of America. In October 2015\, Bob Thompson was inducted into the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame. \nBob makes his home in Charleston\, West Virginia\, and has enjoyed a long and active career as a performer\, composer\, arranger\, and educator. For decades he has played at festivals and concerts around the country\, and has also taken his music to Europe\, Africa\, and South America. \nBob Thompson’s resume includes guest appearances on Marian Mcpartland’s Piano Jazz\, on National Public Radio\, and Bet on Jazz with Ramsey Lewis. His recordings on Intima records\, and Ichiban international\, received high recognition on the jazz charts\, with several reaching the top ten. His recent recordings\, Bob Thompson “Live” on Mountain Stage\, and Smile\, with the Bob Thompson Unit\, are on his own label\, colortones.com. \nBob’s current group\, the Bob Thompson Band\, has a new recording\, “Look beyond the Rain\,” released January 8\, 2016 on Blue Canoe Records. In addition to Bob the band features saxophonist Doug Payne\, guitarist Ryan Kennedy\, John Inghram on bass\, and Tim Courts on drums. \n“This is my musical family\, we all live in Charleston and have been playing together for a long time. We are trying to play music that makes people feel good. We want to spread a little love during these troubled times. Making this record was a lot of fun. It was also great to reunite with my friend\, and producer during my years with Ichiban\, Buzz Amato.” \nAfter hearing Thompson live or on any of his numerous recordings — you might be surprised to learn how hard Thompson tried to avoid the keyboard as a kid. Although there was always a piano in his home in Jamaica\, New York\, Bob had little interest in learning how to play it. \n“When I was in junior high school\, I had a piano teacher who came to my house to give me lessons. He thought I had some talent. So one summer\, he told my mom he’d teach me for free\, Thompson recalls. “I said I wasn’t interested. I didn’t want to spend the summer taking piano lessons.” Instead\, Thompson picked up the trumpet\, playing in various school bands. And when he arrived on the campus of West Virginia State College\, he wanted to join the student jazz band. Only one problem: they already had a fine trumpet player. \n“He was great\, and the trumpet spot was closed.  So I started playing piano\, just so I could be in the band and learn about the music from him\,” Thompson says. It was a switch that stuck. And Thompson left the trumpet behind to hone his keyboard skills. \nWhile a student at West Virginia State College\, Thompson formed the modern jazz interpreters\, a piano trio who appeared at the Notre Dame Jazz Festival in 1964. Shortly thereafter\, Thompson received a valuable lesson from another performer\, Chicago saxophonist Bunky Green\, who joined the band on a State Department tour to Algiers. \n“He’s the person that really inspired me to spend my life playing music\,” Thompson says. “He used to tell me\, ‘When you sit down to your instrument\, play as though it might be the last time.” ‘so don’t fool around\, don’t jive. Go ahead and say what you’ve got to say’.” \nThat’s advice which Thompson has followed throughout his professional career\, which began with the jazz interpreters\, and then later on his own in the 1970s. Through the 80s\, Thompson released a series of widely acclaimed solo albums\, recording first for his own Rainbow Records and then on Capitol’s Intima jazz label. \n“Violinist John Blake encouraged me to record my own compositions. He was a big inspiration.” Blake produced the recordings “7 in 7 out” and “brother’s keeper” with guests like bassist Gerald Veasley\, guitarist Kevin Eubanks\, and drummer Omar Hakim. Hakim also produced Thompson’s 1986 album “say what you want.” The albums are tasteful\, thoughtful\, contemporary jazz. These recordings garnered strong airplay on radio stations nationwide. \nMeanwhile\, Thompson moved to Atlanta-based Ichiban international records to release the albums Love Dance (1992)\, The Magic in Your Heart (1993)\, Ev’ry Time I Feel the Spirit (1996) and Lady First. Ev’ry Time I Feel the Spirit\, which is a collection of spirituals performed in Thompson’s unique contemporary jazz style\, was re-released in 2003 on DM Records. \nBob Thompson has had a long relationship with Mountain Stage\, an eclectic\, Charleston-based weekly music broadcast on national public radio that’s featured everyone from R.E.M. to K.D. Lang\, the Neville Brothers\, and Joshua Redman. Having been a frequent guest on the show since its inception in 1983\, Bob was always a big Mountain Stage fan. In 1991 he was invited to become a regularly featured performer on the show\, and pianist in the house band. “I’ve just fallen in love with Mountain Stage\,” says Thompson\, “it’s also gotten my music out to a more diverse audience.” \nIn between concerts and festival gigs\, Thompson can still be found playing clubs in Charleston — something he says keeps him close to his musical roots. \n“When I’m on a big stage\, I just treat it like I’m in a bar somewhere\,” he says. “The kind of connection with the audience I like happens a lot when we’re playing in a small club\, and that carries over when we get into a larger venue.” \nMusic education is also very important to Thompson. He continues teaching a few private students and doing occasional workshops at colleges and public schools. “I love teaching because it gives me an opportunity to pass along the help that so many have given me along the way. I am always thankful for this opportunity to do something in life that I truly love.” \nAbout Jess Baldwin \n \nJess Baldwin’s voice has been described as “world class\,” “effortless\,” and “pure beauty.” She performed on Mountain Stage in 2013 with John A. Walsh’s The Fields of Gettysburg\, won Best Cover Song in the 2015 Ohio Music Awards\, and was a quarterfinalist in the 2015 American Traditions Competition. She brings souvenirs from diverse vocal worlds into her jazz quintet. Among cover songs by modern artists like Alan Hampton\, the Portico Quartet\, and Esperanza Spalding\, she peppers her own playful\, yet contemplative jazz arrangements of pop-rock artists like Björk and Weezer\, country artists like Gillian Welch\, and classical composers like Barber and Bach. She is joined by an all-star cast of regional musicians: guitarist Ryan Kennedy\, pianist Sean Parsons\, bassist Andy McVey\, and drummer Andy Hall.

DESCRIPTION:Our occasional series of intimate cabaret shows continues with a solo concert by composer and pianist Grisha Krivchenia. Enjoy an evening of hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar\, with seating on the stage of the historic Peoples Bank Theatre. \nGrisha Krivchenia divides his time among Santa Fe\, the Seattle area\, and concert dates around the world. He enjoys a busy performance schedule\, and his compositions are realized by professional ensembles throughout the Northern Hemisphere.  Recent premieres have taken place in Los Angeles\, Seattle\, and Bucharest.  Abundant Silence (Denver\, Colorado) publishes his vocal and chamber music. \nGrisha grew up in Marietta and attended Marietta High School. While we anticipated people would be excited to see it open and to have theatre like this in Marietta and the Mid Ohio Valley once again\, your support and enthusiasm has far exceeded our expectations. We want to thank you with an invitation to join us for a FREE performance by four-time Grammy Award winner Ladysmith Black Mambazo on July 17 as we kick off the second half of our Spotlight Series. All you have to do is RSVP via our website or the box office (740-371-5152). \nPeoples Bank Theatre presents international music sensation Ladysmith Black Mambazo live in concert. In 2014 Ladysmith Black Mambazo\, the South African a cappella group formed by Joseph Shabalala during the 1960’s\, was awarded their fourth Grammy Award for the CD Singing For Peace Around The World.  Not just a CD title but a statement of the group’s career mission. It was Nelson Mandela who designated Ladysmith Black Mambazo “South Africa’s Cultural  Ambassadors to the world.” It’s a title Ladysmith Black Mambazo holds quite dearly to their hearts. Nelson Mandela passed away just over a year ago and the group dedicated the Grammy Award to him. They have been celebrating Mandela’s message of peace at every concert they perform. \nLadysmith Black Mambazo returns to the USA in 2016 for their annual celebration of South African culture and history. In each concert they sing songs of Peace\, Love & Harmony to the world as they have since their very beginnings. \nLadysmith Black Mambazo was founded in the early 1960s by Joseph Shabalala\, then a young farm boy turned factory worker. Ladysmith is the name of Joseph’s hometown\, a small farming area between Durban and Johannesburg; Black being a reference to the oxen\, the strongest of all farm animals; and Mambazo\, the Zulu word for chopping axe\, a symbol of the group’s ability to “chop down” any singing rival who might challenge them. Their ability won so many awards that by the end of the 1960’s they were banned from competitions\, although they were welcomed to participate as entertainers. \nA radio broadcast in 1970 opened the door to their first record contract – the beginning of an ambitious discography that currently includes more than fifty recordings\, fifteen Grammy Award nominations and those four Grammy Award statues. They are currently recording a follow up CD to the recent Grammy winner\, titled Songs of Peace & Love for Kids & Parents Around The World. It is very important to the group that their message of peace be passed from generation to generation. By recording songs of peace that parents can teach their children\, the group hopes to continue the message for decades to come. Their philosophy in the studio is as much about preservation of musical heritage as it is about entertainment. \nApartheid\, the South African social system forced upon the country’s black majority to keep the white minority government in power\, was a dividing force in many ways. The musicians and artists of South Africa took two paths of resistance. Some sang songs with powerful messages of revolution against the horrors of apartheid. Others\, like Ladysmith Black Mambazo\, followed a path of peaceful protest. Joseph Shabalala\, following the ways of protest that Martin Luther King Jr used in the USA\, wrote songs of hope and a better tomorrow. When Nelson Mandela was released from prison\, in 1990\, he named Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s singing as one of the powerful messages of peace he listened to while in jail. In fact\, when Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 he brought Ladysmith Black Mambazo with him to Oslo Norway to receive his award. \nThe group sings from a traditional music called isicathamiya (is-cot-a-ME-Ya)\, which developed in the mines of South Africa\, where black workers were taken by rail to work far away from their homes and their families. Poorly housed and paid worse\, the mine workers would entertain themselves after a six-day week by singing songs into the wee hours on Sunday morning. When the miners returned to the homelands\, this musical tradition returned with them. \nDuring the 1970’s Ladysmith Black Mambazo established themselves as the most successful singing group in South Africa. In the mid-1980s\, Paul Simon visited South Africa and incorporated the group’s rich tenor/alto/bass harmonies into his famous Graceland album – a landmark recording that was considered seminal in introducing world music to mainstream audiences. \nIn addition to their work with Paul Simon\, Ladysmith Black Mambazo has recorded with numerous artists\, including Stevie Wonder\, Dolly Parton\, Sarah McLachlan\, Josh Groban\, Emmylou Harris\, Melissa Etheridge\, and many others. They have provided film soundtrack singing for Disney’s The Lion King\, Part II as well as Eddie Murphy’s Coming To America\, Marlon Brando’s A Dry White Season\, James Earl Jones’ Cry The Beloved Country and Clint Eastwood’s Invictus. A film documentary titled On Tip Toe: Gentle Steps to Freedom\, the Story of Ladysmith Black Mambazo\, was nominated for an Academy Award. They have even appeared on Broadway where they were nominated for a Tony Award. \nLadysmith Black Mambazo carries a message of Peace\, Love and Harmony as they travel the world year after year. They bring this message\, in song and dance\, to every theater they perform in. We hope you will join them as they sing their message.

Online pre-sale of the new CD is currently underway\, and will continue through the 26th of May\, with the official online release date of May 27th. Anthony’s release concert is scheduled to take place in the beautifully renovated Peoples Bank Theatre in Marietta\, Ohio\, on July 15th. \nMossburg was born in Fairmont\, WV\, grew up in New Matamoras\, Ohio\, and currently resides in Columbus. After losing his dream of playing professional football following his tenth concussion\, Anthony turned to music and taught himself to play guitar. The art of writing and putting the lyrics with a melody became the only thing that made him truly feel alive. When the time came to kick off his latest project\, he knew that coming home to release the new music with a big splash was exactly what he wanted to do. Anthony’s roots lie deep in the MOV with family\, friends\, fans\, and countless local shows to his credit. \nBobby Benavides\, youth pastor from Weston\, has eagerly booked Anthony on multiple occasions for his church and youth group. “Anthony is a passionate artist and he gives everything he has to his music. You can sense his heart in every piece of music he creates. He does not hold back in his lyrics and holds true to his authenticity in everything he writes. He shares deep lyrics of pain\, heartbreak\, love\, and nostalgia in this album that draws the listener in and allows the imagination to flow\,” reports Benavides. \nMossburg is known for writing music with passion – songs that mean something. Much of his work stems from his upbringing in this area. He is known for laying his heart on the line as he writes songs about his own struggles in life. That vulnerability connects his heart with his audience\, endears them to him\, and makes his music something almost everyone can relate to. Mossburg states\, “Playing live is my favorite part of this entire thing. Nothing beats being able to play and really connect with people. All of my songs come from personal experience\, so it’s always fun for me to be able to share stories about each song.” \nAnthony’s fifth project\, Crazy\, is a combination of fun\, upbeat songs and the acoustic ballads Mossburg is so well known for. “Crazy\,” the title song of the CD\, is a story of great strength and courage – a testament to where Anthony currently is in his life and career. Struggles in relationships are the focus in “Fool’s Game” and “Dancing With Fire” which are lively additions to the project with memorable\, catchy choruses. “Carolina” is a beautiful\, cryptic ballad\, while “Almost Famous” speaks of Mossburg’s battles with dreams which were painfully lost. The haunting melody and lyrics in “I Close My Eyes” are based on that one person you just can’t seem to get out of your head. Anthony’s first professional music video is planned for “Tornado” – an incredibly personal song that is already speaking volumes to many listeners. Andrew Bunel\, Co-founder of music social media/ecommerce platform www.TheFanConnection.net in Nashville\, TN\, says\, “Anthony combines mature songwriting with smart lyricism. The nostalgic “When We Were Kids”\, the journey of finding yourself in “Radio”\, and the inspirational feel of “These Waters” are standout tracks.” \nMossburg’s album was made possible by a successful Kickstarter campaign. He is incredibly thankful for the support of so many local fans. Production began this past January at Earthwork Recording Studio in Newark\, OH\, with Brandon Bankes heading things up as producer/ engineer. “Working with Anthony on the Crazy album has been nothing but a complete joy from start to finish. A great record always starts with great songs\, and Anthony happens to be one of the best songwriters around – so we had a really solid foundation from the start. It was important to Anthony and to the record to let the songs be their own. We were not restricted to any specific genre or sound\, so we were able to really experiment from song to song. There were a lot of really great moments where everything fell into place and moved everyone in the room. Overall\, I couldn’t be more proud of Anthony and how this record turned out. It’s definitely a stepping stone in his career and I am honored to have a small piece in that\,” said Bankes. Professional mastering was completed in Nashville.

Infused with Carlile’s clarion voice\, The Twins’ tight sibling harmonies\, and stellar musicianship from everyone\, it all simply sounds like Brandi Carlile. \n[expand title=”Read More…” swaptitle=” “]\nYet\, over four acclaimed Columbia albums\, countless sold-out concerts\, and fruitful relationships with top producers Rick Rubin and T Bone Burnett\, something was missing: Carlile and The Twins hadn’t yet captured the distinctive spark of old friends working up new tunes\, a slippery magic born of years touring together\, and often caught only on raw demos made at the behest of the label. The Firewatcher’s Daughter\, by contrast\, is a full-on Carlile/Twins co-production\, cut live in Seattle’s Bear Creek Studio\, with complete artistic control granted by ATO. With this new freedom\, Carlile and The Twins\, intent on capturing the elusive essence of a song’s spirit\, tracked the album live\, with little or no rehearsal. \nIronically\, during this time of liberation\, Carlile and The Twins all transitioned to married life; the Hanseroths became dads\, and Carlile’s wife\, Catherine Shepherd\, was pregnant during the making of The Firewatcher’s Daughter. So when the engineer hit RECORD\, the stakes were higher than usual: Carlile and the Twins producing\, kids underfoot or on the way\, and three years since an album. But true to form\, they wrangled it all into song\, catching many\, many lightning-in-a-bottle moments; the crackling Lucinda Williams-meets-Fleetwood Mac of “Wherever Is Your Heart\,” the CSN-meets-Bonnie Raitt of “The Eye\,” to the dark folk-punk of “The Stranger at My Door\,” the Elton John-meets-McCartney of “Beginning to Feel the Years\,” and more – all executed without a net. \n“Everyone needs to be risking something\,” says Seattle-based singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile. She’s discussing the M.O. behind The Firewatcher’s Daughter\, her stunning new release – her first for artist-friendly indie label ATO. The 12-song collection marks a triumphant return after a three-year recording hiatus\, and her strongest\, most rock & roll album to date. \n“Rock & roll music as a genre always has a sense of erratic recklessness to it\,” she says. “It can’t really be rehearsed – in fact\, rehearsal can kill it. On this album\, each song has its honest rock & roll moment\, even the ballads; it’s between the point where you’ve learned the song enough to get through it\, but you don’t have any control over it yet.” \n“Everything is completely live\,” Carlile says. “That’s the only way to make the moment happen. It’s way too easy to say\, ‘Hey guys\, you get your part down and I’ll spend the rest of the evening by myself in a fucking booth not taking any risks\, and trying to nail down my contribution while I drink a bottle of Jameson.’ A lot of the songs are in about the highest key I can sing them in. The vocals were very emotional for me. All tickets go on sale Friday\, March 4 at 10 a.m.) \nThe title\, The Firewatcher’s Daughter\, comes from a line in “The Stranger at My Door\,” written after Carlile stared into a bonfire for a long\, long time. “I wrote it standing next to one of my frequent bonfires up in the horse pasture on our land. I have a bonfire compulsion. I tend to stand there and stare into them close to every day\, and I’m able to tap into something beyond my day-to-day consciousness. I often write lyrics\, solve problems\, run for President – the usual stuff. Catherine was pregnant and I was contemplating the juxtaposition between religious rigidity and beauty\, and its effects on families and society.” \nCarlile says she and The Twins always insert a through-line in her albums: “An instrument keeps appearing\, a theme keeps getting touched on\, or we try to use the same microphone. But of all my albums\, I felt the least amount of control over this one. Catherine was nine months pregnant\, The Twins’ kids were there\, the tension was there\, but the love was also there\, so the continuity is felt.” \nPart of that continuity is the concept of “chains\,” which recurs over the course of The Firewatcher’s Daughter\, from the lullaby “Wilder (We’re Chained)” to the chorus of the gorgeous “The Eye”: “I wrapped your love around me like a chain / But I never was afraid that it would die / You can dance in a hurricane / But only if you’re standing in the eye.” Carlile lays this chain fascination at the feet of Fleetwood Mac\, a band she and The Twins listened to a lot in the run-up to The Firewatcher’s Daughter\, and whose classic love song “The Chain” is bittersweet reality. “The twins and I were inspired by that band’s connection and their turbulence\,” she says. “I find it fascinating how culturally some things can get cast in a negative light\, like a chain. But a chain can bind and connect\, like a fire can refine and renew. We would definitely describe ourselves as chained in the best possible way.” \nAfter stepping back from this fine new work and assessing it\, Carlile knows exactly what she wants from The Firewatcher’s Daughter: “My goal\,” she says\, “is to connect on a soul level with our longtime fans and friends\, and to reach new people with the honesty of this music. DESCRIPTION:…A legend lives on! \nPresented with support from Morrison Incorporated. \nThe legendary Glenn Miller was one of the most successful of all dance bandleaders back in the Swing Era of the 1930s and 40s. A matchless string of hit records\, the constant impact of radio broadcasts\, and the drawing power of concerts at theatres\, hotels and dance pavilions\, built and sustained the momentum of popularity. \nGlenn disbanded his musical organization in 1942\, at the height of its popularity\, to volunteer for the Army. There\, he organized and led the famous Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band. It went to Europe to give concerts for servicemen\, performing numerous live and radio shows. On December 15\, 1944\, Major Miller took off in a single engine plane from Europe to precede his band to France\, disappearing over the English Channel\, never to be seen again. The army declared him officially dead a year later. \nWith the release of the major motion movie The Glenn Miller Story featuring Jimmy Stewart and June Allyson in 1954\, interest and popular demand led the Miller Estate to authorize the formation of the present Glenn Miller Orchestra. On June 6\, 1956—under the direction of drummer Ray McKinley\, who had become the unofficial leader of the Army Air Force Band after Glenn’s disappearance—the reformed Glenn Miller Orchestra performed its first concert and has been on the road ever since. Other leaders have followed Ray\, including clarinetists Buddy DeFranco and Peanuts Hucko\, trombonists Buddy Morrow\, Jimmy Henderson\, Larry O’Brien\, and Gary Tole\, and tenor saxophonist Dick Gerhart. Since January 2012\, vocalist Nick Hilscher leads the band. \nToday\, the 18 member ensemble continues to play many of the original Miller arrangements both from the civilian band and the AAFB libraries. Additionally\, it also plays some more modern selections arranged and performed in the Miller style and sound. \nJust as it was in Glenn’s day\, the Glenn Miller Orchestra today is still the most sought after big band in the world.

DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, April 19th at 7:30 p.m.\, the Peoples Bank Theatre will come alive with the sound of music as the Marietta College Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble make their debut in the renovated venue with the John Philip Sousa: Looking Back and Planning Ahead Spring Band Concert.  The concert is open to the public and free of charge.  Doors to the theatre will open for audience entrance at 7:00 p.m. \n“Much thought went into the programming for the concert\,” according to Associate Professor Marshall C. Kimball\, Director of Bands and Instrumental Activities at Marietta College.  “When I realized we were going to have this opportunity to perform in the beautifully renovated theatre\, I thought it would be very appropriate to perform the type of concert that could have been heard in the theatre during it’s opening days in 1919.  That was a time when the John Philip Sousa band\, a professional concert band\, was very popular. From that thought came the music selection for this historic performance event.” \nThe Spring Band Concert will be in the same format as that of the John Philip Sousa Band concerts.  “It is not all Sousa Marches\, although the bands will be performing two of his marches including King Cotton and the concert finale will be a mass band performance of Stars and Stripes Forever\,” said Kimball. \nDuring Sousa’s concerts Sousa always featured a soprano soloist.  To fulfill this standard for the concert Dr. Amy Yekel\, dramatic soprano and MC vocal adjunct will perform the Italian aria\, Voi lo sapete from Cavalleria Rusticana by Pietro Mascagni and will follow that performance with Someone To Watch Over Me by George and Ira Gershwin.  Dr. Yekel will be accompanied by the Symphonic Band.  Sousa also consistently featured an instrumental soloist\, who will be MC saxophone adjunct\, Jordan Reed.  Reed will be performing Fantasia for Alto Saxophone and Band by Claude Smith\, performing with the MC Wind Ensemble. \nIntroducing new band literature was a characteristic of the Sousa Band concerts.  To continue that tradition the Marietta College Wind Ensemble will be performing the world premiere of Because It Was Real  by Marietta College music theory professor\, Dr. Andrew Francis. \nOther compositions being performed on the concert will include selections that the Sousa Band performed during it’s era of popularity\, including The Star Spangled Banner\, which was performed at every Sousa event. \n“Other special events are planned for this festive evening but those will be kept under wraps to build the expectations for the concert.  To say the least we are all very excited for this opportunity and plan a great concert and event for both the performers and the audience.  Our goal is to “Pack the House with a full audience of 940 attendees.  We hope the community and college will support the bands for this special concert\,” say Kimball. \nFor more information on the concert contact the Edward E. An outspoken patriot\, beloved mentor to young artists and still a road warrior at age 78\, Charlie has parlayed his passion for music into a multi-­‐‑platinum career and a platform to support the military\, underprivileged children and others in need. \nThe CDB will perform 100 concert dates this year including performances on the Grand Ole Opry. The band’s latest release\, “Off the Grid — Doin’ It Dylan\,” features 10 Bob Dylan songs by the CDB\, and is their first CDB studio release since 2007. \nWhether performing in the hit 80s movie Urban Cowboy\, singing on Easter Sunday at his local church or leading an all-­‐‑star cast at one of his famed Volunteer Jams\, Charlie just exudes joy whenever he steps on stage and he’s always been quick to provide a platform for other artists to shine. In 1974 he invited some friends to join him at Nashville’s War Memorial Auditorium for an all-­‐‑star concert he dubbed The Volunteer Jam. The event continued for years and was broadcast in the U.S. and internationally. Over the years\, the Jam featured a diverse line up that included Willie Nelson\, Ted Nugent\, Roy Acuff\, Stevie Ray Vaughn\, Crystal Gayle\, James Brown\, Emmylou Harris\, Amy Grant\, George Thorogood\, Kris Kristofferson\, Little Richard\, Tammy Wynette\, Alabama\, Oak Ridge Boys\, B. B. King and the Allman Brothers. \nOver the course of his career\, Charlie has received numerous accolades\, including induction into the Grand Ole Opry and Musicians Hall of Fame. He’s received a star on the Music City Walk of Fame. DESCRIPTION:Peoples Bank Theatre presents The Johny Clegg Band live in concert. Johnny Clegg is one of South Africa’s most celebrated sons. He is a singer\, a songwriter\, a dancer\, anthropologist and a musical activist whose infectious crossover music\, a vibrant blend of Western pop and African Zulu rhythms\, has exploded onto the international scene and broken through all the barriers in his own country. In France\, where he enjoys a massive following\, he is fondly called Le Zulu Blanc – the white Zulu. \nOver three decades\, Johnny Clegg has sold over five million albums of his brand of crossover music worldwide. He has wowed vast audiences with his audacious live shows and won a number of national and international awards for his music and for his outspoken views on apartheid\, his perspectives on migrant workers in South Africa and the general situation in the world today. Johnny Clegg’s history is as bold\, colorful\, and dashing as the rainbow country which he has called home for more than 40 years. \n \nJohnny Clegg was born in Bacup\, near Rochdale\, England\, in 1953\, but was brought up in Zimbabwe and South Africa. Between his mother (a cabaret and jazz singer) and his step-father (a crime reporter who took him into the townships at an early age)\, Johnny was exposed to a broader cultural perspective than that available to his peers. \nWhilst lecturing Anthropology at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg\, Clegg worked on the concept of blending English lyrics and Western melodies with Zulu musical structures alongside his songwriting and performance partner\, Sipho Mchunu. This blend was recognized by South African producer\, Hilton Rosenthal\, who became the champion of the project and who continues to promote Johnny Clegg’s work today. \nClegg and Mchunu called their band\, JULUKA\, which means “sweat” in Zulu. Their music was subjected to censorship and internal restrictions on the state-owned radio and their only way to access an audience was through touring. They played concerts at universities\, church halls\, and migrant labor hostels and in the living rooms of private houses because the law forbade mixed race performances in public venues and spaces. Juluka was most fruitful during 1982 and 1983 with tours of the USA\, Canada\, Germany and Scandinavia. In the six years that they were together\, the band recorded two platinum and five gold albums and became an international success. Juluka split up in 1985 when Mchunu returned to his roots as a cattle farmer in Zululand. \nDuring this time\, Clegg formed another crossover band\, SAVUKA (which means “we have risen”). His concept was to mix African music with a wider music base and international rock sounds. Savuka’s first album (Third World Child\, 1987) broke all international sales records in France\, Switzerland and Belgium in 1988. They went on to record four additional albums and tour extensively in Europe and North America\, breaking all attendance records in France in 1988 and 1989. \nFollowing a brief reunion in 1997 with his lifelong friend\, Mchunu\, during which Juluka released one final album\, Ya Vuka Inkunzi\, Clegg recorded a number of solo projects. Since 2004\, he has toured Europe and North America extensively with his band\, playing concerts to capacity houses and appearing at several world-famous events including the Montreal International Jazz Festival\, the Tribeca Film Festival in New York\, New Orleans Jazzfest\, Festival de Cornauille –France\, Festineuch in Switzerland\, Musique Métisses at Angouleme (France’s premier World Music festival)\, Live at Sunset (Zuric)\, Fête de l’humanité in Paris\, and Quebec Summer Festival (Festival d’eté de Québec).

In this special concert\, the duo meets as old friends\, welcoming you into The Acoustic Living Room to share songs and stories near and dear to their hearts — including Kathy’s beloved classics such as “18 Wheels and a Dozen Roses\,” “Where’ve You Been?\,” and many other hits\, plus a handful of more eclectic and often requested tunes from her extensive catalogue\, and a sprinkling of brand new material\, all reinterpreted for the duo format. Her 18 albums are woven through with bluegrass\, gospel\, and Celtic influences\, and have garnered multiple CMA\, ACM\, and Grammy Awards. A genuine storyteller\, Kathy draws inspiration from her Appalachian roots and is a torchbearer for often overlooked musical legacies like those of Hazel Dickens and Jean Ritchie. Her most recent album\, Calling Me Home\, is a collection of songs that celebrates the Appalachian culture of her native West Virginia and expands the vocabulary of acoustic roots music that has always served as her artistic center. \n  \nOpening the evening will be Bruce Dalzell\, patriarch of the Athens music scene. \nDalzell is a craftsman\, constructing delicate and thoughtfulfolk tunes that cut through all the pretense of the modern music industry to hit listeners at their core. Although his catalogue of tunes is not without dark or mournful underpinnings\, his songs always glow out of that dark night\, with the soft but steady warmth of Bruce. His personal musical achievements are enviable enough on their own\, having been recently nominated for a WAMMIE award for his song “Tocoi Light\,” and having graced the stage of West Virginia Public Radio’s much-celebrated “Mountain Stage” roots music radio program. His legacy is also manifest in his studio (I Love Brucie studios)\, his family\, all musically celebrated themselves (his wife and sometimes musical partner\, Gay is a member of The Local Girls\, and their adult son Harlan is one half of The Princes of Hollywood)\, and his unflappable commitment to playing pro bono A&R man to the scores of hopeful\, novice singer-songwriters who clamber to his long-running open mics at Baker University Center’s Bunch of Grapes room Wednesday nights\, and The Front Room on Friday nights. Sensing that he could offer even more\, he took it upon himself to create Singer-Songwriter showcases at Donkey Coffee for emerging local talent\, which eventually bore a child in the form of an ongoing CD series. No matter how bad the new arrivals to the open stages are\, no matter how many times he has heard the same cover song\, he always gently taps his feet\, and he always earnestly claps. For this\, he has garnered neither fame nor fortune\, but he does have the enduring respect of hundreds of strummers who left Athens better musicians than when they arrived.

Enjoy an evening of hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar\, with table seating on the stage of the historic Peoples Bank Theatre. \nThe evening’s concert begins with classical arias by the likes of Mozart and Puccini\, while the second half of the program turns to the music of contemporary Broadway. \nAbout the Artists\nTiffany CasaSante has been thrilling audiences with her full\, dramatic soprano voice since her debut at Carnegie Hall as the featured soloist in ‘Angelus’ by Wocjeck Kilar. Tiffany received a standing ovation after her encore performance of ‘Angelus’ at Carnegie Hall where she also performed Gorecky’s Symphony Of Sorrowful Songs. Tiffany has performed numerous operatic roles and classical concerts throughout the New York area. Recently\, Ms. CasaSante has been the featured soloist with our own River Cities Symphony Orchestra. Tiffany also enjoys teaching and has maintained a voice studio for the past eighteen years. \nBarbara Grizer is excited to be back in her hometown of Marietta Ohio to perform at Peoples Bank Theatre. Barbara has won the Khalil award for her portrayal of Annie Sullivan in The Miracle Worker with the Mid Ohio Valley Players and also for her portrayal of Anne Shirely in Anne of Green Gables with The Actors Guild of Parkersburg. Barbara now lives and performs in New York City. She has performed in many concerts and shows throughout the U.S. and abroad\, her most recent performances were in Croatia and Italy this past summer. Some of her roles include Barbarina in The Marriage of Fiagro\, Papagena in The Magic Flute\, Jospehine in H.M.S. Pinafore\, The Witch in Hansel and Gretel\, and Micaela in Carmen.  \nChristian A. Lindsey has performed as singer\, conductor\, and collaborative pianist in theaters and concert halls in Spain\, Mexico\, the U.S.\, and Puerto Rico. He has sung lead tenor roles in Spanish operettas (zarzuelas) and performed lead roles in various operas\, operettas\, and musicals\, as well as soloist for several choirs\, including the Lancaster Chorale with which he sang tenor solo in the premier of Patrick Dawes’ Psalm 91. His roles include Tamino\, Rinuccio\, McHeath\, and Pirelli. Christian has served as musical director for two zarzuela companies in Spain\, taught in Mexico\, and has conducted dozens of zarzuelas\, operettas\, gala and choral concerts here and abroad\, including Les Misérables with Mid Ohio Valley Players. Mr. Lindsey is slated to conduct Oklahoma! in June of this year at the People’s Bank Theater. \nDave Roberts has appeared in numerous Actors Guild of Parkersburg productions including The Civil War\, Paint Your Wagon\, as Padre in Man of La Mancha and as Muff Potter in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer: the Musical. He has also appeared in the WVU-Parkersburg production of HMS Pinafore as Captain Corcoran. He most recently appeared as the Conquistador Ancestor in The Addams Family at the Guild. A native of the MOV\, Dave regularly serves as cantor and soloist in Parkersburg and Marietta area churches and studies voice with Tiffany CasaSante. He is a software systems analyst for Fairfax\, Virginia based FedComp\, Inc. \nJimmy Sundquist is a native of the Mid-Ohio Valley.  After graduating from Warren High School\, he attended the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music where he studied choral music education and piano\, and received a Bachelor of Music in Music Education.  He currently substitute teaches in several local school districts\, serves as the organist of First United Methodist Church in Parkersburg\, and often accompanies local musicians.  In addition to the piano\, he is an experienced handbell ringer; he has performed handbell solos in the past\, and currently plays in the Mid-Ohio Valley Ringers. \nPLEASE NOTE: Entrance to Stage Door Cabaret concerts is through the back stage door on Third Street\, just around the corner from our main entrance on Putnam Street.
