SUMMARY:Asleep at the Wheel
DESCRIPTION:For over fifty years\, Asleep at the Wheel’s Ray Benson has been traversing the globe as an ambassador of Western swing music and introducing its irresistible sound to generation after generation. More than 100 musicians have passed through the Wheel\, but Benson remains the front man and the keeper of the vision\, in the process racking up more than 30 albums\, ten Grammy awards and literally millions of miles on the road. \n“I’m the reason it’s still together\, but the reason it’s popular is because we’ve had the greatest singers and players\,” Benson explains. “When someone joins the band\, I say\, ‘Learn everything that’s ever been done\, then put your own stamp on it.’ I love to hear how they interpret what we do. I’m just a singer and a songwriter\, and a pretty good guitar player\, but my best talent is convincing people to jump on board and play this music.” \nAsleep at the Wheel has collaborated on records with genre-spanning friends\, including Willie Nelson on 2009’s Grammy Nominated Willie and the Wheel and other critically acclaimed artists\, including Brad Paisley\, Jamey Johnson\, Merle Haggard\, George Strait\, the Avett Brothers\, Amos Lee\, Old Crow Medicine Show\, and Lyle Lovett on Still the King\, their 2015 critically acclaimed and Grammy-winning tribute to Bob Wills. On their latest release\, Half A Hundred Years\, Asleep At The Wheel continued their contributions to the American music landscape when three original members of Asleep at the Wheel—Chris O’Connell\, Leroy Preston\, and Lucky Oceans—returned after 40 years to lend their voices and musicianship to a number of tracks on the album along with Emmylou Harris\, Lee Ann Womack\, George Strait\, Lyle Lovett\, and Willie Nelson. \nAsleep at the Wheel represents an important cornerstone of American roots music\, even though some of its members and audiences represent a new generation. That far-reaching appeal remains a testament to Benson’s initial vision. “It took me 60 years\, but I’m doing what I’m meant to do—singing and playing and writing better than I ever have. A bandleader is just someone who gathers people around them to play the best music they can play. I just try and make the best decisions possible and kick some ass every night onstage.” \nEnjoy all of our upcoming performances on our new Byrider Stage!

SUMMARY:An Acoustic Evening with John Anderson
DESCRIPTION:Featuring an opening performance by special guest Jake Binegar. \nJohn Anderson pushed himself to complete his vocals for Years\, telling producer Dan Auerbach\, “Let’s get everything because I might not wake up.” \nIt’s not an overstatement. In a risky procedure a few months earlier\, when anesthesia was used\, Anderson was told by doctors that he’d died on the operating room table. His wife told him that it had happened three times. That knowledge weighed heavily on the legendary country singer while writing and recording Years because he knew that his next appointment – just a few days after the sessions — would require the same anesthesia.  \nRemarkably\, Anderson kept his health crisis a secret from his touring band and the music industry\, and even now he prefers not to get into all of the details. However\, his recovery has become his testimony. \n“There’s a few things that I came out of this whole deal better with\,” Anderson says. “Part of it is my love for music and part of it is my appreciation for my family. But the biggest part is knowing that I might die here any minute\, for who knows what reason\, but I know that the good Lord already came down and touched me. There’s not a doubt in my mind.” \nDuring his health scare\, he’d lost his sense of pitch and even his ability to recognize his own songs on the radio. At one point\, his hearing left him with what he calls “terrible noise\,” forcing him to come off the road for the first time in 40 years. \nAs a child growing up in Apopka\, Florida\, Anderson remembers humming along to the tone of his father’s boat motor. He started his music career performing solo around Florida before moving to Florida. He worked in construction – he was on the roofing crew for the new Grand Ole Opry House – before landing a contract with Warner Bros. Records. \nAfter charting modestly in the late ‘70s\, Anderson scored No. 1 hits in the ‘80s with “Wild and Blue\,” “Swingin’\,” and “Black Sheep.” After a brief career lull\, he staged a major comeback in 1992 as “Straight Tequila Night” became his first No. 1 single in nine years. That momentum carried him into the 2000s\, giving him 60 charting country singles in four consecutive decades. \n“As a musician who lived this way\, this job has always been so easy and so natural\,” Anderson says. “I always have thanked God for never having to work\, what I called work. I didn’t have to work too hard at it. It was a great way of living for me — and then it went away.” \nMarried since 1983\, with two daughters\, Anderson leaned on his family to push through. For a year and a half\, through innumerable doctor’s visits\, he fought on a daily basis to heal. He remembers at his most desperate moment\, he stood in the front yard of his acreage\, let the rain wash over him\, and told God\, “I don’t really know how much more I can deal with. Please help.” \nLooking back at that moment\, he says\, “It was a matter of 48 hours I started getting better. And I’m telling you\, I’m not here to be anything other than what I am\, but the biggest thing I’ve gotten out of my whole experience is knowing how real my faith is.” \nDuring his period of recovery\, Anderson got a phone call out of the blue from Auerbach\, who was simply calling as a fan\, inspired by a conversation with David Ferguson (co-producer) about great singers. When Anderson later met them both in person at Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound studio in Nashville\, they clicked as a unit immediately. On the spot\, Anderson – a Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee — accepted an invitation to write the next day. \nThat first co-write yielded “Years\,” an emotional centerpiece of the album sung from the perspective of a man with some miles on him. “I recall thinking to myself\, ‘This is a pretty good song\,’” Anderson says. “But we know there’s a lot of good songs that get written\, and a lot of them never get heard. Nevertheless it was off to a good start.” \nAuerbach kept setting writing dates with collaborators like Joe Allen\, Pat McLaughlin\, and Paul Overstreet. At Anderson’s request\, Auerbach sang the work tapes. Instantly recognizing the caliber of the songs\, Auerbach offered to make an album with studio players like Gene Chrisman\, Dave Roe\, Russ Pahl\, Billy Sanford\, and Bobby Wood. Although he had produced or co-produced his own albums since 1981\, Anderson put his trust in Auerbach. \n“I booked the session and here I’ve got a room full of musicians\, and I really didn’t know if he was going to be able to hear in the headphones\,” Auerbach remembers. “But we got him behind the microphone\, he started singing and it was pure magic. His voice is like caramel magic coming out of those speakers.” \nListening to Anderson’s vocals on Years\, it would be impossible to guess that anything was amiss. Delivered in that distinctive\, rich baritone\, “Celebrate” provides a perspective of gratitude while “Slow Down\,” “All We’re Really Looking For” and “You’re Nearly Nothin’” are some of the most eloquent love songs he’s ever recorded. \nMeanwhile\, “I’m Still Hangin’ On” conveys the realities of a soldier living with PTSD\, while “Tuesday I’ll Be Gone” – a breezy duet with good friend Blake Shelton – captures the joy of just getting away from it all. The rambling vibe of “Wild and Free” and irresistible rhythm of “What’s a Man Got to Do” feel like they’ve been in Anderson’s repertoire all along. Beyond Years\, the sessions also yielded a rewarding new friendship between the artist and producer. \n“John will sing it as many times as you want. He wants it to be great\, but the thing is\, once he starts singing\, it’s almost right there\, right from the first lick\,” Auerbach says. “I feel incredibly lucky that I even had to the opportunity to make a record with John Anderson\, let alone have all this meaning to it.” \nAnderson adds\, “We went in the studio\, and I remember saying\, ‘I’m going to do this like it might be my last.’ It still could be\, but now the chances of that are getting slimmer and slimmer every day. I’m doing better so I’m not hardly thinking that way anymore. That’s a blessing\, too. \n  \nEnjoy all of our upcoming performances on our new Byrider Stage!

SUMMARY:The Linda Ronstadt Experience
DESCRIPTION:The Linda Ronstadt Experience with American Idol Star Tristan McIntosh is the premier touring tribute band showcasing the songs that Linda Ronstadt made famous. The show takes you on a musical journey of smash hit songs\, including “You’re No Good\,” “When Will I Be Loved\,” “That’ll Be the Day\,” and a particularly delicate\, nuanced interpretation of “Blue Bayou\,” among many more. \nThis repertoire spans from the earliest days of Linda’s singing career with the Stone Poneys\, a folk trio formed in Los Angeles in 1965; her first hit song with the band was the evocative “Different Drum.” \nDuring the 1970s\, she helped forge the country-rock sound of the era with classic renditions of songs by the Eagles\, Jackson Brown\, and Warren Zevon; later in the 1980s\, she bridged the new wave sound of the decade into huge hits with her chart-topping tenth album\, Mad Love. Linda’s explosive live shows also included material by the Rolling Stones\, Tom Petty\, Little Feat\, and other contemporaries of the day. \nCome out and revel in the songs Linda Ronstadt brought to life so beautifully\, performed by the Linda Ronstadt Experience. Vocalist Tristan McIntosh (2016 American Idol finalist) takes you on an emotional ride of purity\, power\, and heartbreak as she soars through these songs as though they live inside her. Be part of the experience\, and follow Tristan McIntosh and the Linda Ronstadt Experience as they bring Linda Ronstadt’s music into the 21st century! \nTo convey the majesty and impact of McIntosh’s powerful vocal quality is hard to put into words. She exudes poise and grace\, with a delivery both electrifying and subtle\, by turns. Tristan brings the original singer’s version stunningly alive through her own artful touch. A sea of listeners throughout a theatre can often be heard quietly singing along at the summit of “You’re No Good\,” drawing out that famous\, 8-second vowel. \nThe LRE show is touring widely\, and becoming ever more popular\, earning increasingly sold-out houses. Catch them when—not if—you can. It’s a shining experience that will buoy your days to come. \nThe Band\nComposed of accomplished professionals\, the band includes Berklee alumnus and keyboard virtuoso Brooks Milgate\, along with recent transplant to NYC by way of Nashville\, the guitars and harmony vocals of Bronson Bush. Drummer Ethan Leff keeps the engine room humming alongside veteran bassist Paul “Junior” Boyne\, who is also the band’s founder. Rounding out the band’s sound on alternating shows are seasoned multi-instrumentalists Peter Adams and Andy Santospago\, each contributing pedal steel\, acoustic guitar\, harmonica\, banjo and vocal harmonies. \nPerforming All the Hits and More\nLinda Ronstadt was the rare artist who could comfortably cover a wide variety of musical bases\, including folk\, rock\, country\, jazz standards\, opera and Latin. Her vocal gift had few limitations and she showcased it with every recording and performance. Her incredible vocal instrument\, along with her classic song interpretations\, have earned her countless devoted fans across the world. Sadly\, Linda has been stricken with Parkinson’s disease\, and can no longer sing or perform. The Linda Ronstadt Experience is excited to help keep her legacy alive by continuing to share the joy and beauty of her repertoire to a wide audience. \n“Music is meant to lighten your load. By singing it\, you release the sadness and release yourself.” —Linda Ronstadt \nHow The Linda Ronstadt Experience Came to Be\nIn June 2017\, bassist Junior Cain ran a local ad in the northeast\, seeking a Linda Ronstadt-style singer. He proceeded to assemble a band of players that echoed his love for the artist who had been stricken with Parkinson disease\, leaving her unable to sing or perform. After a few early personnel changes\, Junior decided to place ads in the musical hot spots of Nashville and Austin. \nAfter a few weeks\, Tristan McIntosh’s Nashville management team replied to the ad. It was decided that Tristan’s closest musical collaborator\, Bronson Bush\, would fill out the role as the band’s guitarist. By March 2018\, thirty songs were sent out to the potential band members to learn. \nA few months later\, in June of 2018\, Tristan and Bronson flew to Logan Airport in Boston to rehearse the material\, and then shoot video on day four. It took a tremendous leap of faith on everyone’s part\, but when all the members met\, their chemistry and good vibes were undeniable. When Tristan began to sing\, everyone knew that this was going to be something very special. They arranged the material together\, and by November of that same year\, they were off on their first run of shows. \nEnjoy all of our upcoming performances on our new Byrider Stage!

SUMMARY:Kenny G
DESCRIPTION:The sound of Kenny G’s saxophone is as iconic as his curly coif; indeed\, both are instantly recognizable. His latest release\, New Standards\, the title of his 19th studio album\, fifth for Concord Records and first since 2015’s Brazilian Nights\, could well be used to describe his four-decade body of work\, a vision of jazz that helped launch both a musical genre and radio format. After director Penny Lane’s critically acclaimed HBO documentary\, Listening to Kenny G – which humorously reconsiders the purist critical backlash to his music – and a demand performance on Kanye West’s Grammy-winning Jesus Is King album\, it’s now cool to not only be Kenny G\, but admit you’re a fan of his as well. \n“I didn’t realize how strong the message was until I saw the finished film\,” says Kenny\, who has both the best-selling instrumental album of all time in the Diamond-selling\, 12-times-platinum 1992 Breathless\, earning him his only Grammy Award among 15 nominations\, and the Guinness Book of World Records mark for longest sustained note ever recorded on the saxophone. The feature probes some of the many Kenny G accomplishments\, from his song “Going Home” being used as the official end-of-work-day anthem in China to his skills as a golfer and airline pilot. He was also one of the original 10 investors in his Seattle hometown Starbucks Coffee. \nRecalling his music spawning the “smooth jazz” phenomenon\, Kenny explains\, “I’m proud of the fact it was a new style of music that no one was either playing or writing at the time. And it touched a great many people who weren’t into traditional jazz\, pop or R&B. Somewhere in the middle\, they found something they were looking for and liked.” \nNew Standards continues the musical path that has seen Kenny G sell 75 million albums around the world\, looking back to the classic ‘50s and ‘60s jazz ballads for inspiration\, updating them with new studio technology\, such as the digital ability to piece together songs note by note from different performances. The tracks are almost equally divided between soprano and tenor sax\, with one song\, “Two of a Kind\,” featuring him on both\, duetting with himself\, a slight\, unintended hint of Seals & Crofts’ “Summer Wind” wafting through\, while the wistful\, airy “Moonlight” finds him taking a rare turn on alto sax\, the instrument on which he first learned to play. \n“I wanted to play songs with chord progressions that reflected the classic jazz era of Coltrane\, Charlie Parker\, Sonny Rollins\, Cannonball Adderley and Dexter Gordon\, while doing them my way\, creating new standards\,” he says. \nFor “Legacy\,” he sampled the great Stan Getz playing tenor on a live\, unaccompanied version of “Happy Birthday\,” creating a duet with him on soprano sax. \n“I took those individual notes and turned them into a melody I’m proud of\,” explains Kenny. “I don’t think that’s ever been done before.” \nReminiscent of his global hit duet with a filmed Louis Armstrong on “What a Wonderful World\,” Kenny G expects some jazz buffs night not be happy with his Getz tribute\, even though\, as was the case with the Armstrong song\, he is donating all proceeds to the late musician’s estate and family\, whom Kenny says are delighted with his version. \nKenny performs a sprightly soprano sax on the opening “Emeline\,” named after a close family friend\, while the ultra-romantic “Only You” combines a variety of throwback chord changes with a soaring tenor sax gliding its way on top. \n“Rendezvous” evokes a smoky jazz ballad of the ‘40s with its aching tenor\, the first song Kenny G recorded for the album.“Paris by Night” evokes a foggy night strolling on the bridges across the Seine\, while “Anthem” sports a duet between Kenny G on soprano and cello\, giving the track a hymn-like\, anthemic drive a song Kenny played live with the National Symphony in Nashville in December. \n“Blue Skies” is an airy\, whimsical melody he wrote with piano player Randy Waldman\, a fellow airplane pilot — hence the title — whom he accompanies on soprano sax. “Milestones” offers an homage to classic jazz tropes in name and sound\, while the closing “Waltz in Blue\,” titled for its three-quarter time crossed with a blues beat\, ends the album on a rounded low B-flat\, the perfect answer to the high E which begins the first track\, “Emeline.” \nThe album forms an aural narrative\, which makes it the perfect vehicle to demonstrate to film directors and music supervisors that Kenny G\, the world’s most popular instrumental musician\, is overdue to compose his first movie score. \n“If any director needs a memorable instrumental for their film…” he offers. “I think I’ve proven what I can do.” \nFor the last several years\, Kenny G has taken to the internet with gusto\, his posts becoming memes and going viral\, as he continues to have fun with the whole idea of being his iconic self\, satirized in South Park\, Trolls World Tour (as a frizzy-haired sax player threatens the whole pop music cosmos with his “smooth jazz”) and Saturday Night Live’s Kenan Thompson-hosted “What’s Up With That?” segment\, where Fred Armisen plays a certain frizzy-haired soprano sax player. \n“I don’t know why they just don’t have me do it\,” Kenny G laughs\, perfectly in on the joke. “When I was on the show playing with Foster the People\, I told them\, ‘Hey guys\, I’m right here.’ I can fake playing sax really well.” \nAnd\, as you can hear on the excellent new New Standards\, he does quite fine when he plays for real\, too. \n  \nEnjoy all of our upcoming performances on our new Byrider Stage!\n \n

SUMMARY:Bon Journey
DESCRIPTION:Formed in the spring of 2006 in Pittsburgh\, PA\, Bon Journey was the first band of its kind. Paying tribute to two of the biggest arena rock acts in history\, Bon Jovi and Journey\, they bring you the music of these two giant Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inducted bands. The band quickly became a staple in the local music scene\, winning awards in 2006\, 2007\, and again in 2020. They then began playing nationally\, hitting city after city. \nThe real Bon Journey is often imitated by other bands\, even claiming to be them; though flattering\, it is a bit confusing. It seems every city they played\, a band copied them or wanted to be them. They are the first and original Bon Journey and the only composed of original members. From the first song they play\, there is a difference: Essentially\, there are four lead singers in one band\, which makes Bon Journey a vocal powerhouse that separates them from most other acts! Not only with the incredible talents of lead singer Gary Bickerstaff\, who has the range and soul of Steve Perry with the stage swagger of Jon Bon Jovi\, but the high harmony and searing guitar of Dan Newman\, the tight bottom end and vocal of bassist Rob Shine\, the smooth voice of keyboardist Matt Friday\, and the bombast of an amazing drummer in Justin Walker. The band delivers a show like no other and fans come in droves and never walk away disappointed! \n  \nEnjoy all of our upcoming performances on our new Byrider Stage!

SUMMARY:Don Felder
DESCRIPTION:Special Co-Production Presented By Par Mar Stores\nNo matter how you look at it\, 2023 is shaping up to be the Year of the Fingers — Don “Fingers” Felder\, that is. Felder\, a true American rock and roll guitar hero\, is very much looking forward to building upon his rich legacy as one of the most innovative riff-generating songwriters of the modern rock era while continuing his growth as a featured touring and recording solo artist. \nTo that end\, Felder finds himself most decidedly back in the driver’s seat with the release of his first solo album in seven years\, American Rock ’N’ Roll (BMG). American Rock ’N’ Roll consists of 11 high-energy rockers mixed with touching\, thoughtful ballads. ARnR also boasts a who’s who of A-list guest contributors including Slash\, Sammy Hagar\, Peter Frampton\, Mick Fleetwood\, Joe Satriani\, Orianthi\, Richie Sambora\, Alex Lifeson\, and many\, many more. \nNot only is Felder a proud\, longstanding member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame\, having been inducted with the Eagles back in 1998\, he was also inaugurated into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville in 2016 and the Florida Artists Hall of Fame in 2017. Fact is\, Felder spent 27 years with the Eagles\, who own the fine distinction of recording the top-selling album of all time — Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975)\, which has sold over 38 million copies (and counting). “I’m blessed enough to have contributed to and been a part of a very talented mixture of voices\, writing\, guitar parts\, and production. I’m very proud of that\,” he says of the group.  \nDon left the band in 2001 and has since forged an impressive career as a top-tier solo artist with a three fully realized full-length albums as well and several very successful singles for film scores like Heavy Metal\, 1983’s sonically soaring Airborne and 2012’s multifaceted song-cycle treatise\, Road to Forever and American Rock ‘N’ Roll. Felder added “best-selling author” to his impressive C.V. when his spellbinding 2008 memoir\, Heaven and Hell: My Life in the Eagles (1974-2001)\, became an instant New York Times smash bestseller. \nFelder navigated the burgeoning rock scene in his native Gainesville\, Florida\, in the 1960s\, which included a stint teaching guitar to Tom Petty and learning slide guitar from his longtime friend Duane Allman. His matchless lead-guitar tone added extra fuel to Eagles tracks like “Already Gone\,” “One of These Nights\,” “Take It to the Limit\,” and “New Kid in Town\,” in addition to having co-written “Victim of Love\,” “Those Shoes\,” and his most popular co-creation\, “Hotel California.” Felder has also recorded with and performed alongside top-drawer artists such as The Bee Gees\, Michael Jackson\, Alice Cooper\, Warren Zevon\, Barbra Streisand\, Elton John\, Joni Mitchell\, and Stephen Stills\, whom Don first crossed paths in his first band\, The Continentals in Gainesville in the early 1960s.  \nSpending more and more time on the road as the frontman of his own tight-knit solo band made Felder realize he needed to put in the time to hone his own distinctive voice into a finely tuned instrument. “That’s just how I work\,” Don explains. “A lead vocal has to fit the song — it has to fit the timbre and texture of the song. Otherwise\, you’re a one-note samba.” Felder counts extended runs with Foreigner\, Styx\, Peter Frampton’s Guitar Circus\, and REO Speedwagon as touring highlights. \nWhat’s next for Fingers Felder? Extensive touring is most definitely already locked into place to get behind the majestic sounds and broad shoulders of American Rock ’N’ Roll. In the meantime\, let us continue to admire the essence of Don Felder\, a man who continues to push boundaries and expand horizons. It’s the only way that he can travel down that road. \n  \nEnjoy all of our upcoming performances on our new Byrider Stage!

SUMMARY:June First Friday: Joshua Lee & The Nice Dream
DESCRIPTION:This free\, DORA-friendly event will be held on Putnam Street in front of Peoples Bank Theatre. No tickets are necessary to attend. Lawn chairs are welcome! \nAfter 14 years of fifteen-passenger vans\, tour buses\, and side man gigs\, Joshua Lee left Nashville with his young family and headed to West Virginia\, trading screaming fans for screaming kids. After a difficult transition\, Lee nearly left the music life behind entirely\, but he began to write again and\, in doing so\, found his own musical voice. In his old life\, Lee might have sought collaborators to start a band\, but initially having difficulty finding enough like-minded musicians\, he focused instead on discovering himself as a solo artist\, something he’d never tried before. Playing solo shows in the Ohio Valley area led to a new confidence in his ability as a singer-songwriter and to a new group of musical collaborators. \nOn his debut EP\, Promise Land (June 2017)\, Joshua wrestled with questions of loss and cautiously reached for hope rather than despair. Recorded mostly at home\, and self-produced along with Trae Gunter (Randy Montana\, Jacob Thomas Jr.)\, he found himself searching for his own sound by mining the territories of folk rock and heartland rock and blending in synths and ambient guitars. Hints of The National supplement more traditional song forms in the spirit of Ryan Adams and Tom Petty. \nNow based in Marietta\, OH\, Joshua Lee is performing solo and as a full band with The Nice Dream (Shane Henthorne\, Justin Arthur\, Dan Lee\, Vinnie Mele\, and Andy Hall) in the Mid-Ohio Valley region as he’s finishing work on his next project to be released in the summer of 2023. \nThis project is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts. SUMMARY:The Kingston Trio
DESCRIPTION:Fans of legendary folk icons The Kingston Trio can re-discover their timeless music all over again\, after a forced nearly two-year hiatus due to pandemic restrictions as the group returns to their national tour. All three current members\, Mike Marvin\, Tim Gorelangton and Buddy Woodward have intrinsic links to and experience with the original group: Mike is the adopted son of founding member Nick Reynolds\, who was also his musical mentor; Tim\, a close friend since boyhood\, is one of the few musicians outside the Trio who has recorded with Nick Reynolds; and Buddy\, who has performed with longtime Kingston Trio member George Grove. Many of their personal memories recall the iconic trio’s performances and journey as folk music made its extraordinary ascent to the pinnacle of popular culture – and the top of the music charts. They’ll perform such timeless classics “Where Have All The Flowers Gone?” and “Tom Dooley.” \n  \nEnjoy all of our upcoming performances on our new Byrider Stage!

SUMMARY:Mountain Stage with Kathy Mattea featuring Amy Ray Band\, The Lone Bellow\, Alison Brown Band\, Tony Furtado\, and Villages
DESCRIPTION:About Mountain Stage\nFor nearly forty years\, Mountain Stage has stood as one of the most beloved and enduring programs in public radio history\, broadcasting thousands of raw\, unforgettable performances by rising stars and veteran legends alike from the series’ humble home in Charleston\, West Virginia.  \n“From the start\, we wanted to make a show where the music could speak for itself\,” says co-founder\, artistic director\, and longtime host Larry Groce. “We didn’t want to chase trends or build a cult of personality; we just wanted to showcase the kind of art that deserved to be heard.” \nLaunched in 1983 by Groce\, executive producer Andy Ridenour\, and chief engineer Francis Fisher\, Mountain Stage began as a regional production of West Virginia Public Broadcasting before quickly gaining NPR distribution and expanding its reach to a national audience. Bookings on the two-hour\, Sunday afternoon program were eclectic\, to say the least\, with each episode showcasing a handful of artists across a broad range of styles and genres\, and audiences responded favorably to the unique mix of down-home talent and household names. Though any number of early events could be credited with helping to fuel the show’s remarkable rise—some point to the breakout success of West Virginia natives like Tim O’Brien and Kathy Mattea\, who began performing on the series well before fame came calling\, while others recall the show’s star turn at the Public Radio Program Directors Conference in 1986\, when they presented station reps with authentic West Virginia hors d’oeuvres (fresh ramps and hamburgers cut into quarters)—most agree that it was R.E.M.’s 1991 appearance that marked an indelible turning point in the Mountain Stage story. \n“We got a call out of the blue asking if we’d like to have R.E.M. on the show\,” says Groce\, who’d hosted Peter Buck on the program the year before. “The band had just hit #1 with Out of Time\, but they’d announced that they weren’t going to tour behind it\, so the demand to see them was stupendous. I think they only did three shows in the US: SNL\, MTV Unplugged\, and Mountain Stage.” \nWhile the performance undoubtedly raised Mountain Stage’s profile with artists and audiences around the world\, the series remained true to its Appalachian roots\, maintaining the same small\, tight-knit staff and commitment to embodying the warmth\, honesty\, and openness of West Virginia and its people in everything they did. The decades to come would yield countless more iconic performances from an incredibly diverse array of guests—John Prine\, Patti Smith\, Allen Ginsberg\, Dr. John\, Mavis Staples\, Townes Van Zandt\, Hugh Masekela\, Buddy Guy\, Preservation Hall Jazz Band\, Wilco\, Phish\, and Angélique Kidjo\, to name just a few—but each and every artist found themselves treated with the same respect and hospitality as the last\, regardless of whether they were GRAMMY-winning superstars or fresh-faced rookies making their radio debut. \n“There’s something quintessentially West Virginia about Mountain Stage\,” says Mattea\, who took over hosting duties from Groce in 2021. “It’s a culture steeped in humility and generosity\, which makes for a groundedness\, for a sense of continuity and community that I think artists are really drawn to.“These days\, Mountain Stage can be heard on nearly 300 public radio stations nationwide (and globally via NPR Music)\, but its heart and soul remain firmly planted in Charleston\, where the series continues to present world-class performances with the same passion\, dedication\, and curiosity that’s guided it from the start. \nMountain Stage is produced by West Virginia Public Broadcasting and distributed by NPR Music. \n[av_hr class=’default’ height=’50’ shadow=’no-shadow’ position=’center’ custom_border=’av-border-thin’ custom_width=’50px’ custom_border_color=” custom_margin_top=’30px’ custom_margin_bottom=’30px’ icon_select=’yes’ custom_icon_color=” icon=’ue808′ font=’entypo-fontello’ av_uid=” custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”] \nAbout Kathy Mattea\nIt’s hard to imagine anyone more suited to serving as the new host of Mountain Stage than two-time GRAMMY Award winner and West Virginia native Kathy Mattea.  \n“If someone was going to invent a job that combined all of my passions and all of my skills\, this would be it\,” Mattea reflects. “It’s just the perfect fit in every way.” \nOver the course of Mountain Stage’s nearly 40-year run on public radio\, the show has become something of a second home for Mattea\, who’s appeared as a guest on the Charleston-based program more times than any other female artist (she ranks second overall only to her good friend and fellow West Virginia native Tim O’Brien). \n“There’s something quintessentially West Virginia about Mountain Stage\,” Mattea explains. “Beyond the world-class performances\, beyond the collaborative atmosphere\, beyond how much fun it is\, I think the show offers a really important insight into the people and the culture that make West Virginia so special\, and I’m always thrilled to help share that with the world.” \nBorn and raised in Kanawha County\, Mattea lived in West Virginia until the late 1970s\, when she moved to Nashville to pursue her dreams of a career in music. She signed her first record deal in 1983 and charted with a pair of early releases\, but it was her acclaimed third album\, Walk The Way The Wind Blows\, that truly signaled her arrival as a star. The record produced four Top 10 singles at country radio and set the stage for Mattea’s 1987 smash\, Untasted Honey\, which marked the first of five of her albums to be certified gold. Untasted Honey contained back-to-back #1 country singles\, as did 1989’s Willow In The Wind\, which helped Mattea take home two consecutive CMA Female Vocalist of the Year awards along with a GRAMMY for Best Female Vocal Performance. The LA Times called her “a performer of limitless potential\,” while the Washington Post hailed her as “one of Nashville’s finest song interpreters\,” and People described her as “warm\, strong\, smart and generally splendid.” Over the next three decades\, Mattea would go on to record nearly a dozen more albums exploring country\, folk\, Celtic\, and gospel music; collaborate with everyone from Jackson Browne to Townes Van Zandt; notch her first platinum record with a collection of her greatest hits; earn her second GRAMMY Award; top the Bluegrass Albums chart; and garner yet another GRAMMY nomination for Coal\, her Marty Stuart-produced exploration of Appalachian mining songs. Mattea’s most recent release\, 2018’s Pretty Bird\, marked her triumphant return to the studio after nearly losing her voice and prompted glowing profiles from NPR\, Billboard\, Rolling Stone\, and more. \nIn 2019\, Mattea began guest-hosting episodes of Mountain Stage at the suggestion of co-founder and original executive producer Andy Ridenour. Filling in for longtime host Larry Groce\, who’d never missed a show in the series’ entire run\, was a daunting task\, but Mattea’s deep well of musical knowledge\, easygoing chemistry with guests\, and profound personal reverence for the program and its history made her a natural.  \n“I understood the culture\, I understood the music\, and I was just as comfortable singing with the guests as I was chatting with them\,” says Mattea. “Stepping into that role felt like finding something I’d been yearning for without even realizing it.” \n“Kathy’s been coming on the show for more than 30 years now\,” adds Groce\, “and in all that time and with all her success\, she really hasn’t changed who she is at her core. She embodies the best of West Virginia the same way Mountain Stage does\, and that’s how we knew she’d be the perfect person for this job.” \nIn 2021\, Mattea took over as full-time host of Mountain Stage to a warm welcome from loyal listeners around the country. Given the profound effect the show has had on her over the years\, the honor’s not one Mattea takes lightly. She sees herself as a steward of the series\, a keeper of the flame whose primary responsibility is to carry on the traditions and the legacy that have made Mountain Stage such an integral part of the public radio landscape these past four decades. Like her predecessors\, she aims to bring humor\, heart\, and a whole lot of unforgettable performances to the airwaves\, showcasing both rising young talent and legendary veterans while at the same time sharing a taste of the West Virginia she grew up with\, a place full of friendly\, funny\, brilliant people who tend to be too humble and kind to toot their own horns. \n“One of the reasons I love this job so much is that it’s not about me\,” Mattea explains. “There’s something so rewarding about being able to take whatever success I’ve had in my career and pass that on to the next person\, to be able to shine a light on these amazing artists and this wonderful state and this incredibly important institution.”Her place in Mountain Stage history long since assured\, Kathy Mattea is ready to help guide the show into the future one joyous\, eclectic night of music at a time. \n[av_hr class=’default’ height=’50’ shadow=’no-shadow’ position=’center’ custom_border=’av-border-thin’ custom_width=’50px’ custom_border_color=” custom_margin_top=’30px’ custom_margin_bottom=’30px’ icon_select=’yes’ custom_icon_color=” icon=’ue808′ font=’entypo-fontello’ av_uid=” custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”] \n\nAbout Amy Ray\nA lot of artists defy categorization. Some do so because they are tirelessly searching for the place they fit\, while others are constantly chasing trends. Some\, though\, are genuinely exploring and expressing their myriad influences. Amy Ray belongs in the latter group. Pulling from every direction — Patty Griffin to Patti Smith\, Big Star to Bon Iver — Ray’s music might best be described as folk-rock\, though even that would be a tough sell\, depending on the song. \nRay’s musical beginnings trace back to her high school days in Atlanta\, Georgia\, when she and Emily Saliers formed the duo that would become the Indigo Girls. Their story started in 1981 with a basement tape called “Tuesday’s Children” and went on to include a deal with Epic Records in 1988\, a Grammy in 1990\, and nearly 20 albums over more than 35 years. \nRooted in shared passions for harmony and justice\, the Indigo Girls have forged a career that combines artistry and activism to push against every boundary and box anyone tries to put them in. As activists\, they have supported as many great causes as they can\, from LGBTQ+ rights to voter registration\, going so far as to co-found a Native environmental justice organization\, Honor the Earth\, with Winona LaDuke in 1993. As artists\, they have dipped their toes into a similar multitude of waters — folk\, rock\, country\, pop\, and more — but the resulting releases are always pure Indigo. \nRay’s seven studio records — and three live albums — have charted even wider seas\, from the political punk of 2001’s Stag to the feminist Americana of 2018’s Holler. Each effort seems to lean into her influences in different ways\, whether it’s the Allman Brothers or the Carter Family. One album finds the Butchies on full blast\, another features Alison Brown on bluegrass banjo. \nBoth Stag and its follow-up\, Prom (2005)\, found Ray addressing societal woes\, ranging from the dangers of homophobia to the machismo of rock & roll\, all while channeling her inner Replacements into a Southern punk sound that she has called “subversiveness with a smile.” Ray softened her sonic stance a bit for her next two efforts\, 2008’s Didn’t It Feel Kinder and 2012’s Lung of Love\, both of which felt closer in tone to her work with Indigo Girls\, confronting cultural issues alongside personal ones. \nIn retrospect\, it’s easy to see how songs like Lung of Love‘s “Bird in the Hand” and “The Rock Is My Foundation” served as signposts of what was to come next for Ray. With Goodnight Tender in 2014\, she recorded in Asheville\, North Carolina\, and stepped squarely into the country music that has been a part of everything she’s done. But it’s not the kind of country heard on the radio; it’s the country music culled from folk\, bluegrass\, gospel\, and Southern rock\, going so far as to title a tune after Duane Allman. \nFor 2018’s Holler\, Ray recorded\, once again\, with her Carolina country kin\, adding horns and strings to all but split the musical distance between Kinder and Tender to create a soulful\, country-tinged\, gospel-infused Americana sound. More cohesively than her prior releases\, Holler encompasses and imparts all the disparate aspects of Ray’s influences in a singular offering. \nRay’s vast artistic inspirations are matched only by the deep peer admiration that is reflected in her albums’ guest appearances\, which have included Vince Gill\, Brandi Carlile\, Justin Vernon\, Jim James\, Derek Trucks\, Susan Tedeschi\, Phil Cook\, and others. That kind of good will is something only built from a lifetime of good deeds and great music. \nWhen 2020 found the world immersed in a pandemic\, Amy and her band turned to the digital world\, and started producing and recording singles from their own makeshift studios. “Tear it Down” released along with a video in November\, 2020 wrestled with Amy’s upbringing in the cradle of the confederacy and pays tribute to activists working to dismantle racism. In February\, 2021\, Amy Ray Band released another video and song\, “Muscadine”\, to sing of dogs and what they teach us of unconditional love. Another song\, “Chuck Will’s Widow” about the incessant call of the night jar came out in 2021. \nThese singles laid the groundwork to go into the studio in the winter of 2021 in Nashville and record a full-length record to analog tape. The upcoming release\, If It All Goes South is due out in September 2022. IIAGS digs deeper into Amy Ray and her band’s musical roots and showcases their bond and agility of 9 years and running. She is revisited by old friends Alison Brown (banjo)\, Phil Cook (keys and vocals)\, and Brandi Carlile (vocals). The addition of guest vocals by Allison Russell and Natalie Hemby along with mandolin and vocals from Sarah Jarosz bring fresh influences to the mix. The record also brings us a collaboration with Bluegrass / Americana greats I’m With Her\, where they reimagine the song “Chuck Will’s Widow”. \n[av_hr class=’default’ height=’50’ shadow=’no-shadow’ position=’center’ custom_border=’av-border-thin’ custom_width=’50px’ custom_border_color=” custom_margin_top=’30px’ custom_margin_bottom=’30px’ icon_select=’yes’ custom_icon_color=” icon=’ue808′ font=’entypo-fontello’ av_uid=” custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”] \n \nAbout The Lone Bellow\nThroughout their lifespan as a band\, The Lone Bellow have cast an indelible spell with their finespun songs of hard truth and unexpected beauty\, frequently delivered in hypnotic three-part harmony. In a departure from their past work with elite producers like Aaron Dessner of The National and eight-time Grammy-winner Dave Cobb\, the Nashville-based trio struck out on their own for their new album Love Songs for Losers\, dreaming up a singular sound encompassing everything from arena-ready rock anthems to the gorgeously sprawling Americana tunes the band refers to as “little redneck symphonies.” Recorded at the possibly haunted former home of the legendary Roy Orbison\, the result is an intimate meditation on the pain and joy and ineffable wonder of being human\, at turns heartbreaking\, irreverent\, and sublimely transcendent. \n“One of the reasons we went with Love Songs for Losers as the album title is that I’ve always seen myself as a loser in love—I’ve never been able to get it completely right\, so this is my way of standing on top of the mountain and telling everyone\, ‘It’s okay\,’” says lead vocalist Zach Williams\, whose bandmates include guitarist Brian Elmquist and multi-instrumentalist Kanene Donehey Pipkin. “The songs are looking at bad relationships and wonderful relationships and all the in-between\, sometimes with a good deal of levity. It’s us just trying to encapsulate the whole gamut of experience that we all go through as human beings.” \nThe fifth full-length from The Lone Bellow\, Love Songs for Losers arrives as the follow-up to 2020’s chart-topping Half Moon Light—a critically acclaimed effort that marked their second outing with Dessner\, spawning the Triple A radio hits “Count On Me” and “Dried Up River” (both of which hit #1 on the Americana Singles chart). After sketching the album’s 11 songs in a nearby church\, the band holed up for eight weeks at Orbison’s house on Old Hickory Lake\, slowly carving out their most expansive and eclectic body of work yet. “I’ve always thought our music was so much bigger than anything we’ve shown on record before\, and this time we turned over every stone until we got the songs exactly where they needed to be\,” says Elmquist. Co-produced by Elmquist and Jacob Sooter\, Love Songs for Losers also finds Pipkin taking the reins as vocal producer\, expertly harnessing the rarefied vocal magic they’ve brought to the stage in touring with the likes of Maren Morris and Kacey Musgraves. “Singing together night after night for a decade allows you to understand what your bandmates are capable of\, in a way that no one else can\,” says Pipkin. “There are so many different qualities to our voices that had never been captured before\, and producing this album ourselves was a nice opportunity to finally showcase that.” \nRecorded with their longtime bassist Jason Pipkin and drummer Julian Dorio\, Love Songs for Losers embodies an unvarnished intensity—an element in full effect on its lead single “Gold\,” a galvanizing look at the real-life impact of the opioid crisis. “We don’t ever try to write songs with an agenda\, so with ‘Gold’ the idea was to tell the story from the perspective of someone in a hard situation—in this case\, a guy who’s stuck in the downward spiral of addiction\,” says Elmquist. In one of the most exhilarating turns on Love Songs for Losers\, the chorus to “Gold” explodes in a wild collision of bright piano tones\, potent beats\, and massively stacked guitars. “We’ve sung ‘Gold’ as a folk song in the past\, but for the album we wanted to really experiment and push our sound as far as it could go\,” Elmquist notes. \nImbued with equal parts brutal honesty and heart-expanding wisdom\, Love Songs for Losers opens on “Honey” and its synth-laced reflection on the more delicate aspects of enduring love. “‘Honey’ came from thinking about how my wife doesn’t like being called ‘honey’ or ‘baby’—she thinks it’s lazy\, it always rubs her the wrong way\,” says Williams. “It turned into a song about sometimes wanting to go back to when we were first in love\, when everything was crazy and exciting and we were right on the verge of ruining each other’s lives at any second.” Later\, on “Cost of Living\,” Pipkin takes the lead vocal and shares a raw and lovely expression of grief\, her voice shifting from fragile to soulful with impossible ease. A quietly shattering piano ballad featuring Elmquist on lead vocals\, “Dreaming” channels the ache of lost love with exquisite specificity. “It’s a song about two people catching up with each other\, and I love how the lyric goes from ‘How’s your mother?’ to ‘How’s that devil in your heart?’—there’s no middle ground\, which feels very true to me\,” says Williams. And on “Wherever Your Heart Is\,” The Lone Bellow present a beautifully slow-building piece exploring a particularly powerful form of devotion. “I love those moments\, even in friendships\, when someone surprises you or reveals something you never knew about them before\,” says Elmquist. “I think it’s so vital to any relationship to keep on chasing the mystery and maintain that curiosity\, instead of just making your mind up about who or what the other person is.” \nOne of the most tender tracks on Love Songs for Losers\, “Unicorn” unfolds with a cascade of heavenly melodies as Williams offers up an unabashed outpouring of affection for his wife Stacy (“I was kinda thinkin’ I could tell you my feelings/Sit you down and wreck you with some words that are pretty/I could say ‘I love you’ but I wanna say more/I think God made a unicorn”). “That’s definitely one where the physical location seeped into the song\, and Roy Orbison’s ghost maybe led us toward the path we ended up on\,” Williams points out. \nEven in its most lighthearted moments\, Love Songs for Losers bears the same heady depth of emotion that’s guided Williams since his earliest days as a songwriter—a period of time that followed a devastating horse-riding accident that left Stacy temporarily paralyzed. As she recovered\, Williams learned to play guitar and began setting his journal entries to song\, routinely performing at an open-mic night across the street from the hospital. Soon after Stacy regained her ability to walk\, the couple moved to Brooklyn\, where (after eight years as a solo artist) Williams joined Elmquist and Pipkin in founding The Lone Bellow. In 2013\, the band made their auspicious debut with a self-titled\, Charlie Peacock-produced album that quickly landed at No. 64 on the Billboard 200\, later turning up on best-of-the-year lists from the likes of Paste and Pop Matters. With over 100 million career streams to date\, The Lone Bellow’s past output also includes the Dessner-produced Then Came the Morning (a 2015 effort that earned them an Americana Music Award nomination) and Walk Into a Storm (a 2017 release produced by Cobb and hailed by NPR for its “warmly rousing\, gospel-inflected Americana”). \nFor The Lone Bellow\, the triumph of completing their first self-produced album marks the start of a thrilling new chapter in the band’s journey. “At the outset it was scary to take away the safety net of working with a big-name producer and lean on each other instead\,” says Pipkin. “It took an incredible amount of trust\, but in the end it was so exciting to see each other rise to new heights.” And with the release of Love Songs for Losers\, the trio feel newly emboldened to create without limits. “This album confirmed that we still have beauty to create and put out into the world\, and that we’re still having fun doing that after ten years together\,” says Elmquist. “It reminded us of our passion for pushing ourselves out onto the limb and letting our minds wander into new places\, and it sets me on fire to think of what we might make next.” \n[av_hr class=’default’ height=’50’ shadow=’no-shadow’ position=’center’ custom_border=’av-border-thin’ custom_width=’50px’ custom_border_color=” custom_margin_top=’30px’ custom_margin_bottom=’30px’ icon_select=’yes’ custom_icon_color=” icon=’ue808′ font=’entypo-fontello’ av_uid=” custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”] \n \nAbout Alison Brown\nOne of the most multi-faceted minds in roots music\, Alison Brown is a GRAMMY-winning musician\, producer\, composer\, former investment banker and co-founder of the internationally acclaimed\, Nashville-based Compass Records Group. Alison’s brand new album ON BANJO features her unique banjo style on an eclectic set of original compositions that explore the range of the instrument with a cast of musical compadres including Steve Martin\, Kronos Quartet\, Sierra Hull\, Stuart Duncan and members of the Alison Brown Quintet. \nAlison has won the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Banjo of the Year award (the first women in IBMA history to win an instrumentalist’s award) as well as the IBMA Distinguished Achievement Award.  She is also the recipient of the USA Artists Fellowship in Music and a member of American Banjo Museum’s Hall of Fame.  She made her first appearance on Mountain Stage over 30 years ago as a member of Alison Krauss and Union Station and is delighted to be returning. \n[av_hr class=’default’ height=’50’ shadow=’no-shadow’ position=’center’ custom_border=’av-border-thin’ custom_width=’50px’ custom_border_color=” custom_margin_top=’30px’ custom_margin_bottom=’30px’ icon_select=’yes’ custom_icon_color=” icon=’ue808′ font=’entypo-fontello’ av_uid=” custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”] \n\nAbout Tony Furtado\nVery few musicians of any stripe so personify a musical genre as completely as Tony Furtado embodies Americana roots music. Tony is an evocative and soulful singer\, a wide-ranging songwriter and a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist adept on banjo\, cello-banjo\, slide guitar and baritone ukulele who mixes and matches sounds and styles with the flair of a master chef. Tony is also an accomplished and awarded sculptor. \n[av_hr class=’default’ height=’50’ shadow=’no-shadow’ position=’center’ custom_border=’av-border-thin’ custom_width=’50px’ custom_border_color=” custom_margin_top=’30px’ custom_margin_bottom=’30px’ icon_select=’yes’ custom_icon_color=” icon=’ue808′ font=’entypo-fontello’ av_uid=” custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”] \n\n \nAbout Villages\nAway to the westward\, I’m longing to be\nWhere the beauties of heaven unfold by the sea\nWhere the sweet purple heather blooms fragrant and free\nOn a hilltop\, high above the Dark Island\n– Traditional Scottish folk song \nThe concept of the Dark Island is metaphorical: When you’re at the end of your life\, taking stock of it\, what will you think about? No matter what you land on\, good or bad\, that island is yours – the\ndark surely looms\, but it also covers all you’ve ever experienced. \nFor the folk-rock quartet Villages\, the concept is also literal: Hailing from Cape Breton Island\, on the farthest flung northeastern corner of Nova Scotia – itself already flung far – and jutting out into\nthe Atlantic Ocean\, it’s a lush landscape of great complicated beauty\, its rocky coast covered in sea salt and leaning defiantly into harsh winds. \nOn its new full-length\, Dark Island\, Villages marries metaphor to roots on 11 tracks that offer an experience meant to echo a visit to Cape Breton itself: Otherworldly\, euphoric\, sobering\, celebratory\, and reverent. \nThe band – Matt Ellis\, Travis Ellis\, Jon Pearo\, Archie Rankin – tapped the JUNO-winning composer and soundscapist Joshua Van Tassel (David Myles\, Great Lake Swimmers\, Fortunate Ones) as producer\, stepping into Joel Plaskett’s Fang Recording for a whirlwind eight days. Van Tassel directed the band to play the songs fully live off the floor (three takes max) capturing the boisterous energy of Villages’ live performances and making the album a series of present moments strung together. \nThe combination of Van Tassel – whose own work is largely instrumental and played on rare instruments – and Villages – the band has also made three indie-rock albums as Mardeen – results in a type of Celtic music that respects its heritage while taking sonic chances. Dark Island’s opening seconds are comprised of birds chirping and Matt Ellis’ voice stutter-stepping through “Good morning\,” before dropping into a full-on shanty in the form of “Wearing Through the Pine.” \nThe lead single “Love Will Live On” is a gently rolling foot-stomper lamenting the hard times of modern-day life: “I’m too poor to be buying this round\,” Ellis notes whose upbeat chorus offers a\nhopeful solution: move to the country and live a quiet life on “an island in the Maritimes”. \nIn between album-wide kitchen-party whoops\, Ellis pulls his voice as high as it can go on “Easy When You Know How\,” sure to be a live sing-along challenge. The final minute of “Willow” hops into a classic Wall of Sound pop cacophony surrounding a chorus of traditional la-la-las and a refrain of high\, airy oohs carries “Mother” to its gentle conclusion. \nNature is\, aptly\, a dominant theme on Dark Island\, befitting men who grew up in a place wild and beautiful: fields\, waves\, trees\, rivers\, and rocks figure prominently throughout the lyrics\, presenting the music as a kind of soundtrack to Island life\, putting you in and at home. On perhaps the most Celtic-leaning track\, “Play the Fiddle All Night\,” all of the album’s themes are handily encompassed in just half of a chorus: “Play for me the ‘Dark Island’ / till the dew lifts off the clover/ play the fiddle all night.” \nFor the members of Villages\, who grew up on traditional Celtic music\, to create and perform new music in that tradition is no small feat\, and no small responsibility. They know where they come from. They know how it made them. And they know where their Dark Island lies. \nSo gentle the sea breeze that ripples the bay\nWhere the stream joins the ocean\, and young children play\nOn a strand of pure silver\, I’ll welcome each day\nAnd I’ll roam forever more\, the Dark Island \nReviving the Cape Breton sound of their ancestry and mixing it with contemporary influences and instruments\, Villages are an intriguing case study in cultural identity. Escaping the trad-inspired sounds in their younger days through their acclaimed indie rock band Mardeen\, the group has assuredly found their way back to their roots. \nTheir self-titled debut took a deep dive into the haunting and meandering melodies of the Cape Breton Highlands and presents them through atmospheric arrangements that recall the influence of groups like The War on Drugs and Fleet Foxes. Villages won Folk Recording of the Year at the 2019 Nova Scotia Music Awards. The group’s 2020 EP\, Upon the Horizon\, built on the unique sound of their debut and was mixed by Phil Ek (Fleet Foxes\, Band of Horses). \n[av_hr class=’default’ height=’50’ shadow=’no-shadow’ position=’center’ custom_border=’av-border-thin’ custom_width=’50px’ custom_border_color=” custom_margin_top=’30px’ custom_margin_bottom=’30px’ icon_select=’yes’ custom_icon_color=” icon=’ue808′ font=’entypo-fontello’ av_uid=” custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”] \nEnjoy all of our upcoming performances on our new Byrider Stage!

SUMMARY:Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder
DESCRIPTION:Fifteen-time GRAMMY® Award-winner Ricky Skaggs’ career is easily among the most significant in recent country music history. If Skaggs’ burgeoning trophy case full of awards wasn’t already enough evidence of that fact\, consider that legendary guitarist Chet Atkins once credited Skaggs with “single-handedly saving country music.” His life’s path has taken him to various musical genres\, from where it all began in bluegrass music\, to striking out on new musical journeys\, while still leaving his musical roots intact. \nBorn July 18\, 1954 in Cordell\, Kentucky\, Skaggs showed signs of future stardom at an early age\, playing mandolin on stage with bluegrass pioneer Bill Monroe at 6 and appearing on TV with Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs at 7. He emerged as a professional bluegrass musician in 1971\, when he and his friend Keith Whitley were invited to join the legendary Ralph Stanley’s band the Clinch Mountain Boys. \nSkaggs then went on to record and perform with progressive bluegrass acts like the Country Gentlemen and J.D. Crowe & the New South\, whose self-titled 1975 Rounder Records debut album was instantly recognized as a landmark bluegrass achievement. He then led Boone Creek\, which also featured Dobro ace and fellow New South alumnus Jerry Douglas. \nBut Skaggs turned to the more mainstream country music genre in the late ‘70s when he joined Emmylou Harris’s Hot Band\, replacing Rodney Crowell. He became a recording artist in his own right in 1981 when his Epic label debut album Waitin’ for the Sun to Shine topped the country charts and yielded a pair of #1 hits. Overall\, his productive stay at Epic Records would result in a total of 12 #1 hits. Additionally\, he garnered eight Country Music Association Awards–including the coveted Entertainer of the Year trophy in 1985. \nSkaggs\, of course\, fit right in with young “new-traditionalist” ‘80s artists like Randy Travis\, and helped rejuvenate the country music genre after the worn-out “Urban Cowboy” period. But\, Skaggs put his own stamp on the country format by infusing his bluegrass and traditional country music roots into the contemporary Nashville sound. \nSkaggs’ 1997 album Bluegrass Rules!\, released on his newly-formed Skaggs Family Records label\, marked a triumphant return to bluegrass—which he’s solidified ever since with a series of GRAMMY® Award-winning albums\, recorded with his amazing bluegrass band\, Kentucky Thunder (8-time winners of the IBMA ‘Instrumental Group of the Year’). Skaggs’ label has also served as a home for similar bluegrass and roots music-oriented artists\, including The Whites. \nIn the past decade\, he has been honored with inductions into the Gospel Music Association’s Gospel Music Hall of Fame and the Musicians Hall of Fame. In 2018\, a landmark year\, Skaggs was also awarded membership into the National Fiddler Hall of Fame\, the IBMA Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame\, and country music’s greatest honor\, the Country Music Hall of Fame. Most recently\, he was awarded the prestigious National Medal of Arts in 2020 for his contributions to the American music industry. \nRicky struck his first chords on a mandolin over 60 years ago\, and he continues to do his part to lead the recent roots revival in music. Clearly\, his passion for it puts him in the position to bring his lively\, distinctively American form of music out of isolation and into the ears and hearts of audiences across the country and around the world. Ricky Skaggs is always forging ahead with cross-cultural\, genre-bending musical ideas and inspirations. \n[av_video src=’https://youtu.be/9dADWLJpqAQ’ mobile_image=” attachment=” attachment_size=” format=’16-9′ width=’16’ height=’9′ conditional_play=” av_uid=” custom_class=”] \nEnjoy all of our upcoming performances on our new Byrider Stage!

SUMMARY:Kathy Mattea & Suzy Bogguss
DESCRIPTION:Kathy Mattea and Suzy Bogguss have each carved out careers in popular music with country chart hits spanning two decades. SUMMARY:Air Supply
DESCRIPTION:Graham Russell & Russell Hitchcock met on May 12\, 1975\, the first day of rehearsals for Jesus Christ Superstar in Sydney\, Australia; they became instant friends with their common love for The Beatles and\, of course\, singing. \nAfter the shows’ performances at 10:30\, they would play pizza parlors\, coffee bars and night clubs with just one guitar and two voices. They quickly gained a reputation for great harmonies and for original songs that Graham was constantly writing. They made a demo on a cassette of two songs\, “Love and Other Bruises” and “If You Knew Me” and took it to every record company in Sydney. Everyone turned it down but one — CBS Records — who admired their unique style. \nThey made a single in one afternoon and it shot to number one on the national charts. Air Supply was born! That same year\, they opened for Rod Stewart across Australia and then throughout the U.S. and Canada playing all of the famous huge venues before Rod would take the stage. They found new fans\, but did not break the U.S. market. \nBack in Australia they had to start again and made a record called Life Support. On this record were some treasures of songs\, including “Lost in Love” which went Top 10 in Australia and somehow found its way to music industry executive Clive Davis in New York. \nClive immediately signed Air Supply to Arista Records and in 1980\, “Lost in Love” became the fastest selling single in the world\, leaping to the top of all of the charts. Now Air Supply was on their way. The second single was “All Out of Love\,” and that went up the charts even quicker. \nSeven top-five singles later\, Air Supply at that time had equaled The Beatles’ run of consecutive top five singles. The albums Lost in Love\, The One That You Love\, Now & Forever\, and The Greatest Hits sold in excess of 20 million copies. “Lost in Love” was named Song of the Year in 1980\, and\, with the other singles\, sold more than 10 million copies. \nThe trademark sound of Russell Hitchcock’s soaring tenor voice and Graham Russell’s simple yet majestic songs created a unique sound that would forever be known as Air Supply. \nHowever\, it is the live shows that always hold audiences captive around the world. They were the first Western group to tour China\, Taiwan\, and countless other countries that before would not allow pop music across their borders. In 1983\, they recorded “Making Love Out Of Nothing At All” by Jim Steinman\, which solidified the group as a permanent force in modern music. This song was released on The Greatest Hits album which soared past 7 million copies. \n“Lost in Love”\, “All Out of Love”\, “The One That You Love”\, “Sweet Dreams”\, and “Making Love Out Of Nothing At All” have each achieved multi-million plays on the radio. \nIn 1986 the group’s music was still playing endlessly on radio. That same year\, Graham was married to actress Jodi Varble from Rochelle\, Illinois\, who also was his leading lady in the video for “Making Love Out Of Nothing At All.” \nAir Supply began to tour with lavish productions in places that no one had been before. In South America and Asia they became a part of everyone’s life. In 1988\, Air Supply was asked to participate in Australia’s bicentennial celebration and to play for HRH Prince Charles and HRH Princess Diana\, where they learned both were already ardent fans. This engagement would be one of their most treasured moments in their career. \nIn 1989\, they recorded “The Earth Is” album selling over a million copies outside of the U.S. This album was followed by “The Vanishing Race” CD and\, with the singles “Goodbye” and “It’s Never Too Late”\, again saw multi-platinum success. The following albums\, “News from Nowhere”\, “Yours Truly”\, and “Across the Concrete Sky” all gave their second greatest hits album multi-platinum status as they traveled the world each and every year. \nIn 2000\, a new production company was founded to be devoted to Air Supply’s entire future product\, called A Nice Pear\, which gave them complete creative control. \nIn July 2005\, their live DVD\, “It Was 30 Years Ago Today” celebrated 30 years of success around the world and in that same month\, Air Supply smashed attendance records when\, in Cuba\, at one show they played to 175\,000 people. Also 2005 saw the release of “The Singer and the Song”\, an acoustic album of many of their big hits which received critical acclaim. \nIn May 2010\, the long-awaited album\, “Mumbo Jumbo” –also the duo’s first studio recording in eight years- was released. Recorded at Graham Russell’s home studio near Park City\, Utah and at Odds On’s state of the art facilities in Las Vegas with top session musicians and an orchestra\, “Mumbo Jumbo” was produced by Russell and engineered by Odds On’s Sean O’Dwyer\, whose credits include Pink Floyd\, Randy Newman and Blink-182. Among the 14-tracks\, released by Odds On’s label\, was the first single “Dance With Me\,” which earned Air Supply a prominent feature article in Billboard Magazine titled “Still Supplying The Hits After 35 Years.” \nJust weeks after composer and vocalist Graham Russell was honored with a BMI Million-Air Certificate recognizing 3 million performances of the duo’s hit “All Out Of Love\,” Air Supply’s new song was the #1 most added track on the FMQB AC40 Chart\, and also one of the most added on the R&R (Radio and Records) AC Chart and the Mediabase AC chart. \nIn 2013\, the duo was inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association’s Hall of Fame. Air Supply celebrated their 40th anniversary in 2015 and continue to delight audiences all over the world. \n  \nEnjoy all of our upcoming performances on our new Byrider Stage!

SUMMARY:Chris Janson - LIMITED AVAILABILITY
DESCRIPTION:Featuring special opening guest: Tim Montana\nChris Janson is a “live legacy in the making” (Rolling Stone). Breakout country star Janson is a platinum-selling recording artist\, high-octane entertainer\, multi-instrumentalist\, award-winning singer/songwriter\, and Grand Ole Opry member. The ACM award-winner has collected prestigious accolades that place him among country music greats. His debut single\, “Buy Me A Boat\,” was recognized as the iHeartRadio Music Awards “Country Song of the Year\,” and MusicRow named his poignant single\, “Drunk Girl\,” their “Song of the Year” winner. Bobby Bones named Janson “One of the greatest entertainers in country music.” His big hits include: “Buy Me ABoat” (No. 1\, 3x Platinum); “Fix A Drink” (No. 1\, Gold); “Drunk Girl” (ACM Award-winning\, Gold); “Good Vibes” (No. 1\, Gold); “Done” (multi-week No. 1\, Gold). Janson has earned more than 7.4 BILLION airplay impressions to date and upwards of 1.7 BILLION global career streams. \n[av_hr class=’default’ height=’50’ shadow=’no-shadow’ position=’center’ custom_border=’av-border-thin’ custom_width=’50px’ custom_border_color=” custom_margin_top=’30px’ custom_margin_bottom=’30px’ icon_select=’yes’ custom_icon_color=” icon=’ue808′ font=’entypo-fontello’ av_uid=” custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”] \n\nTim Montana\nChiefly considered a Country rocker\, Tim Montana is a true Renaissance man\, moonlighting as a TV personality\, marksman\, father\, husband\, grill master\, songwriter\, hot sauce connoisseur\, hell-raiser\, truck driver\, philanthropist\, and businessman. Raised in a single-wide without electricity in the wilds near Butte\, Montana\, Tim Montana (yes\, it’s his real name)\, spent many years grinding it out by taking odd jobs just to pay the bills (like cleaning kennels\, frying chickens\, operating carousel\, being a ranch hand)and racked up lifetimes worth of unbelievable stories. \nWith a mix of innate talent\, unrelenting hustle\, grit\, gasoline\, and magnetic charisma\, Montana is now signed with Music Knox Records/BBR Music Group. Tim released his label debut album (produced by the award-winning Michael Knox)\, Long Shots\, in April 2021 and is already prepared to release its follow-up EP\, Reno. While the Long Shots title served as a nod to the hard road Montana had to take to achieve his dream and how he overcame his struggles against all odds. Reno is a display of gratitude to all of those who have taken a gamble on him and supported him in being his authentic self. The music\, befitting of its lyrical themes\, is Country Rock—but don’t mistake it for Southern. With geography impacting Tim’s musical influences\, he’s located somewhere between Seattle and its grunge\, Texas’ roadhouse\, Nashville’s Country\, Wyoming’s Chris LeDoux\, and the Heartland’s Rock. The music of both projects embraces hard living\, the American experience\, and the blue-collar way—it’s an ode to the underdogs and screams “hard work pays off\,” something Tim knows a lot about. \n  \nEnjoy all of our upcoming performances on our new Byrider Stage!

SUMMARY:Marty Stuart And His Fabulous Superlatives
DESCRIPTION:With legends like George Jones\, Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard all passed on\, country music purists often echo the question Jones himself asked: “Who’s going to fill their shoes?” The answer\, in part\, is Marty Stuart. \nWhile he’s too gracious to admit it himself\, the Grammy-winning singer\, songwriter\, and musician is living\, breathing country-music history. He’s played alongside the masters\, from Cash to Lester Flatt\, who discovered him; been a worldwide ambassador for Nashville\, Bakersfield\, and points in between; and safeguarded country’s most valuable traditions and physical artifacts. Including its literal shoes: Stuart counts the brogan of Carter Family patriarch A.P. Carter and an assortment of Cash’s black boots among his vast collection of memorabilia. \nBut most importantly\, Stuart continues to record and release keenly relevant music\, records that honor country’s rich legacy while advancing it into the future. Way Out West\, his 18th studio album\, hits both of those marks. Produced by Mike Campbell (of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers)\, the album is a cinematic tour-de-force\, an exhilarating musical journey through the California desert that solidifies Stuart as a truly visionary artist. \nOpening with a Native American prayer\, a nod to Stuart’s affinity for the indigenous people\, particularly the Lakota\, Way Out West transports the listener to the lonely but magical American West. It is\, in its own way\, musical peyote. \n“If you go and sit by yourself in the middle of the Mojave Desert at sundown and you’re still the same person the next morning when the sun comes up\, I’d be greatly surprised\,” says Stuart. “It is that spirit world of the West that enchants me.” \nSpecifically the promised land of California. Growing up in Philadelphia\, Mississippi\, Stuart was taken by the mystique of the Golden State: the culture\, the movies\, and especially the music. “Everything that came out of California captivated my kid mind in Mississippi\,” he says. “It seemed like a fantasy land. Way Out West is a love letter to that.” \nEnjoy all of our upcoming performances on our new Byrider Stage!

SUMMARY:THE COMMODORES
DESCRIPTION:For three decades\, the Commodores have remained a force in the music industry. “The Legends of Motown”\, “Hit\, After Hit\, After Hit”\, “Grammy Award Winners”\, “All The Emotion\, All the Excitement”\, “If You Haven’t Seen Them Live\, You Haven’t Heard The Commodores”. \nThe Commodores aren’t just any group. They have staying power. Just like their hit song “Brick House\,” the Commodores have created a foundation that just won’t budge. \nAfter churning out hit after hit in the Motown days\, the Commodores still hadn’t achieved Grammy recognition. This wasn’t to be until 1986\, without Lionel Richie\, when the Commodores released “Night Shift”. \nIn 1968 the group was formed while all the members were in college at Tuskeegee Institute. After being discovered by Berry Gordy\, the Commodores went on to sell over 60 million records for Motown. With hits like “Machine Gun” and “Sail On”\, the Commodores became proven artists. They proved it then. They proved it in 1986 with “Night Shift”\, and now they are ready to prove it again. \nUnlike many other groups\, the Commodores haven’t rested on their early hits. Quite the contrary\, the Commodores have continued to put out quality work. With the creation of their new label\, the Commodores released Commodores Hits Vol. I\, Commodores Hits Vol. II\, Commodores Christmas\, and Commodores XX-No Tricks. The newest CD “Commodores Live” was recorded during the groups 1997 U.S. tour and released in December 1998 along with the TV special of the same name. The Commodores believe in their work\, but they are not the only ones: \n“Seventies phenoms return with a self produced album filled with some great music. The Commodores look set for a fantastic return.”…BRE Music Report \n“Venerable pop/R&B band issues its first single in five years engaging vocals woo with warmth and restraint.”…Billboard \nThe successful Commodores of the present have not only produced six new albums\, and embarked upon a world-wide tour\, but have created their own record label\, Commodores Records and Entertainment. Today the Commodores stand not only as talented and successful musicians\, but as artists determined to continue their success into the future. \nEnjoy all of our upcoming performances on our new Byrider Stage!

SUMMARY:Josh Turner
DESCRIPTION:Featuring special opening guest: Chris Haddox \nMCA Nashville recording artist Josh Turner\, while a multi-platinum-selling star himself\, is a country music fan first and foremost. He’s even concocted his own version of Mount Rushmore conceived solely of country music legends. Turner’s “Mount Rushmore of Country Music” boasts five faces rather than four (it’s his mountain\, after all) — Randy Travis\, John Anderson\, Johnny Cash\, Vern Gosdin\, and Hank Williams. \nThe giants carved into the granite of Turner’s musical soul form the core of his aptly titled new album\, Country State of Mind. “I’ve always said that any song you hear coming from my voice\, you’re going to hear bits and pieces of those five guys\,” he says. “They taught me how to be Josh Turner.” \nThe dozen songs on Country State of Mind\, including songs from those five legends among others\, span more than half a century of classic country music\, encompassing both well-known standards and deep-catalog cuts. The album shows a singer in dialogue with the songs and the artists that shaped his vision. It’s a conversation — relayed in the distinctive\, resonant baritone that brought Turner #1 hits and five gold and platinum albums — between the past and present of country music. And on half the tracks\, Turner invites other voices — some heroes\, some contemporaries — to join him in the conversation. \n“I knew the artists I wanted to represent\,” explains Turner\, “and I chose songs that exemplified who each of these artists was from my perspective.” The result is a multifaceted album that reflects a distinctive mix of popular and personally meaningful songs. “Forever and Ever\, Amen” marks Randy Travis’ first recording session since an incapacitating 2013 stroke. John Anderson\, who has written and recorded with Turner in the past\, joins him to reprise Anderson’s 1993 hit “I’ve Got It Made.” Early in his career\, Turner often performed Vern Gosdin’s first chart-topping single\, “I Can Tell By the Way You Dance (You’re Gonna Love Me Tonight)\,” and has long dreamed of re-introducing it to a new generation of listeners. Turner plays guitar for the first time on one of his albums on his renditions of Johnny Cash’s “The Caretaker” and Hank Williams’ “Alone and Forsaken” — the album’s oldest\, and darkest\, songs. \n“When I was growing up\, before I moved to Nashville\, I was crazy about sad songs\,” he says. “There has always been a part of my heart that has loved those sad\, lonesome\, and slow songs.” \nTurner chose his guests as carefully as he did his material\, selecting artists who shared his love and respect for the material. “I wanted artists I knew have an appreciation for traditional country music\,” he says. Besides heroes Travis and Anderson\, Turner invited Country Music Hall of Famer Kris Kristofferson to record a new version of his 1973 chart-topper “Why Me” with him. The title track\, originally a 1986 hit for Hank Williams Jr.\, becomes a duet with fellow Grand Ole Opry member Chris Janson. The members of Runaway June take George Jones’ part on “You Don’t Seem to Miss Me\,” and Maddie & Tae sing with Turner on “Desperately\,” a 2004 single for George Strait and the album’s newest song. Country State of Mind also includes songs originally made famous by Keith Whitley (“I’m No Stranger to the Rain”)\, Waylon Jennings (“Good Ol’ Boys” Theme from The Dukes of Hazzard)\, and Alan Jackson (“Midnight in Montgomery”). \nFrom the very start of his career through chart-topping hits like “Your Man\,” “Would You Go With Me\,” “Why Don’t We Just Dance\,” and “All Over Me\,” Turner has immersed himself in country music’s history and its iconic figures. After all\, this is someone who\, as a student at Nashville’s Belmont University\, took an open gate on Johnny Cash’s property as a sign he should knock on the legendary singer’s door and introduce himself. \n“The doorknob wiggles\, the door swings open\, and there stands Johnny Cash\,” Turner recalls. “He and I both jump back\, because he didn’t expect to see me\, and I sure didn’t expect him to answer the door.” \nLater\, as the hits came\, along with multiple GRAMMY\, CMA\, and ACM nominations\, Turner joined the Grand Ole Opry. One of country music’s oldest and most hallowed traditions\, the Opry once counted Hank Williams Sr.\, Johnny Cash\, and George Jones among its ranks; now\, Turner shares membership with heroes like Randy Travis\, Alan Jackson\, and Patty Loveless\, as well as guest Chris Janson. \nFor nearly two decades\, Turner has been one of country music’s most recognizable voices\, selling more than 8.5 million units and amassing more than 2.5 billion global streams. He has never kept his reverence for traditional country music a secret\, but\, with this latest album\, Josh Turner is definitely in a Country State of Mind. \nReally\, though\, he always has been. \n[av_hr class=’short’ height=’50’ shadow=’no-shadow’ position=’center’ custom_border=’av-border-thin’ custom_width=’50px’ custom_border_color=” custom_margin_top=’30px’ custom_margin_bottom=’30px’ icon_select=’yes’ custom_icon_color=” icon=’ue808′ font=’entypo-fontello’ av_uid=” custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”] \n\n \nChris Haddox\nChris Haddox is Morgantown\, WV-based singer/songwriter who has been writing songs since he was in grade school. His debut album\, released in March 2022\, climbed to the #11 spot on the Folk Alliance International airplay chart and landed him a Mountain Stage performance of one of his songs with Kathy Mattea.  His catalog of songs covers a variety of topics\, including courthouse squares\, shoes\, fiddles\, hurricanes\, firearms\, county fairs\, and\, of course\, love. His wry sense of humor is evident in many of his lyrics\, and his songs are funny\, sad\, sarcastic\, but above all\, they are heartfelt. His honest delivery may leave you laughing\, crying\, curious\, or just scratching your head as you ask yourself “what made him write that?” Learn more about Chris Haddox at chrishaddoxmusic.com. \n  \nEnjoy all of our upcoming performances on our new Byrider Stage!
