Taking center stage at the Grand Ole Opry\, alongside her father\, George Morgan\, young Miss Morgan performed her rendition of “Paper Roses.” –Lorrie Morgan\, however\, was no “imitation\,” she was as pure and authentic as a freshwater pearl. \nThree short years later\, after her dad’s passing\, Lorrie became a road warrior to launch her own career\, touring with her father’s band. Walking in her father’s footsteps\, she kept his memory alive while winning countless fans ensuring her rights to become a front-and-center entertainer. Lorrie’s confidence in her sexuality opened the door for many a female artist who walked in her path; her glamour and grace brought “Hollywood” to the format. \nHer whirlwind life and career have earned her valuable lessons and timeless stature among her peers and music enthusiasts and enabled her confident sense of self that shines through in her music like a late afternoon sunglow through the stained-glass windows of the Ryman Auditorium. \n“One of my biggest struggles in the earlier years was to gain confidence in myself as a performer–to close a show behind a singer’s singer\, an artist who was on the cusp of the cutting edge\, or a known fan favorite. It took me a while to see myself as a stylist–that I no longer had to sing other artists’ songs; I could sing my own and create my own identity. I’ve finally grown into my own shoes and they’re mighty comfortable.” \nLorrie inked her first recording contract in 1988. As an RCA recording artist\, and later on the roster of its sister label\, BNA\, Lorrie made her mark with what have now become timeless country standards\, “Five Minutes\,” “Something In Red\,” “Watch Me\,” and “What Part Of No\,” to establish her place as a bright and shining country star—a modern woman making country music history. \nLorrie’s success is defined by her love of a great song and ability to sell it. He was born in Manchester\, England\, where he studied voice and acting at St. Bede’s College and the Manchester School of Music and Drama. As a child\, he played “Stanley Fairclough” in the long running British soap opera Coronation Street. He was also featured in the television series Knight Errant\, Family Solicitor and Monro’s Saki Stories. \nAt the age of fifteen\, Peter achieved international fame as “Herman”\, lead singer of the legendary pop band Herman’s Hermits. His classic hits include: “I’m Into Something Good”\, “Mrs. Brown\, you’ve Got A Lovely Daughter”\, “I’m Henry VIII\, I Am”\, “Silhouettes”\, “Can’t You Hear My Heartbeat”\, “Wonderful World”\, “Just A Little Bit Better”\, “There’s A Kind of Hush”\, “A Must To Avoid”\, “Listen People”\, “No Milk Today” “The End of the World” “Leaning On A Lamp Post”\, and “Dandy”. Ultimately\, Herman’s Hermits sold over fifty-two million recordings. In all\, fourteen singles and seven albums went gold. As “Herman”\, the photogenic Noone graced the cover of nearly every international publication including Time Magazine. He performed on hundreds of television shows and appeared with such luminaries as Ed Sullivan\, Jackie Gleason\, Dean Martin and Danny Kaye. He was cast as the engaging “Duke of Cheshire” in ABC’s musical version of The Canterville Ghost. Soon thereafter\, he portrayed the title role in Hallmark Hall of Fame’s Pinocchio. He also starred in three highly successful feature films for M-G-M: Mrs. Brown\, You’ve Got A Lovely Daughter\, Hold On! and When The Boys Meet The Girls. \nWith characteristic zeal\, Peter took on leading roles in full-scale theatrical productions of Dick Wittington\, Aladdin and Sinbad The Sailor. These live stage spectaculars were mounted at major theatres throughout Great Britain and Noone received critical acclaim for his outstanding work. In the eighties\, Peter starred on Broadway in the New York Shakespeare Festival’s production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance. He won rave reviews for his superb portrayal of the dashing\, young hero\, “Frederic”. His performance was so well received\, that he went on to reprise the role at the world-famous Drury Lane Theatre in London. Noone charmed audiences worldwide as he continued to play “Frederic” with both the U.S. National Touring Company and the International Touring Company of “Pirates”. \nPeter’s acting career flourished with guest-starring roles in prime-time television series such as: Married With Children\, My Two Dads\, Dave’s World\, Easy Street\, Too Close For Comfort\, and Laverne and Shirley. In a memorable episode of Quantum Leap\, he shed his “nice guy” image to portray “Dwayne”\, a scheming promoter with murderous intentions. He starred as “Apoo”\, a frustrated African relief worker\, in the Los Angeles stage premiere of Topokana Martyr’s Day and as Alfred Von Wilmers in the U.S. National Tour of the smash Broadway hit Romance\, Romance. \nThe nineties found Peter embarking on a four-year stint as the winsome host of VH1’s My Generation\, the highest-ever-rated half hour retrospective of pop/rock music. More recently\, he was featured in the recurring role of “Paddington” on the CBS daytime drama\, As The World Turns. His legion of fans eagerly awaited each episode and Peter quickly became a favorite of the soap opera magazines and online message boards. He began the millennium with his successful entry into cyberspace and the New York Daily News dubbed him “The King of the Sixties on the Internet” due to the overwhelming popularity of his  websites: peternoone.com and hermanshermits.com. \nAccompanied by his band\, Herman’s Hermits\, Noone currently performs over 200 concerts a year. He consistently plays to sold-out venues and his admirers span the generations. Today’s teen girls scream just as passionately as their mothers did back in 1965\, prompting VH1 to select Noone as their viewer’s choice for the “Sexiest Artist of the Year”. DESCRIPTION:No refunds will be issued after Tuesday\, November 23\, 2021\, at 12:00 pm EST.\nIf you bought tickets for the previously scheduled dates in August 2020 or May 2021\, your tickets are still good for the November 27 date.\nFeaturing an opening performance by Emmy-nominated country music artist Risa Binder. \nBorn blind (his family thought it was retribution for sin)\, Ronnie Milsap’s grandparents gave the boy over to the North Carolina State School for the Blind hoping for a better chance.  There\, Milsap discovered music – deviating from the school’s classical curriculum to explore the nascent realms of race music\, rock & roll and jazz. \nBeing the brilliant kid he was\, it wasn’t long until he’d found his way into the local clubs and the tiny indie labels. \nSuddenly\, he was sharing bills with Ray Charles (who took the Ashford & Simpson-penned B-side to Milsap’s Scepter single “Never Had It So Good” and scored his own hit with “Let’s Go Get Stoned”)\, and James Brown on a circuit that included the Howard Theater\, the Royal Peacock\, and more. \nIt was Ray Charles who told the young pianist when he was offered a scholarship to Young Harris College’s law program\, “Son\, I can hear the music inside you…” \nIt settled Milsap’s fate. \nLiving in Atlanta\, playing clubs and doing sessions the future Country Music Hall of Famer caught wind that JJ Cale was looking for a keyboard player. Cale hired him. Ronnie went on to work at the Whiskey for a good while. \nFrom Atlanta\, Ronnie moved to Memphis where he was doing sessions with Chips Moman\, where Elvis famously commanded\, “More thunder on the keys\, Milsap\,” during the recording of “Kentucky Rain.” It was there he was asked to play the Whiskey on the famed Sunset Strip in LA. While staying at the notorious Hyatt House\, Charley Pride\, a famous man in country music\, saw the white kid playing rock & soul and suggested giving Nashville a try. \nForty #1s. Five decades of charted singles. Creating a new way of recording (being blind his hyper-attuned hearing led him to create/build what is now known as Ronnie’s Place\, where the new album\, the Duets\, was captured)\, he broke genre rules and became one of the biggest pop/AC and even R&B artists of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. \nSix Grammys. CMA Entertainer of the Year and four Album of the Year Awards. The first country video played on MTV (the ironic “She Loves My Car”). An early champion of NFL star Mike Reid\, who wrote many of Ronnie’s #1 hits and who’d go on to write Bonnie Raitt’s second most enduring classic “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” \nAlways chasing the music\, always hungry for the songs\, he is now an inspiration for a new generation of country stars from critical standard setters Kacey Musgraves and Little Big Town to CMA/ACM Entertainers of the Year Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean\, as well as a standard-setter for friends like Dolly Parton\, George Strait\, Willie Nelson and even groundbreakers Leon Russell and Billy Gibbons. \nIn a world of marketing match-ups\, the Duets is an homage to blurring lines\, great songwriting and vocals that celebrate soul over product – something rare in today’s flashcard jingle country. \nBut just as importantly\, Ronnie Milsap is a testament to going where you don’t belong with an open heart and a true sense of music as compass. A rebel blind boy often at odds at school for following the music in his heart\, that music took him to places white people didn’t go… brought him a wife who would be not just a steadfast companion\, but a fellow traveller in the songs (they’re still together!!)… give him stages from the chitlin circuit\, soul clubs\, rock rooms to the biggest arenas\, “Solid Gold\,” the White House and beyond. \nHe saw racism inside out. The Marshall Tucker Band is one such group that continues to have a profound level of impact on successive generations of listeners who’ve been searchin’ for a rainbow and found it perfectly represented by this tried-and-true Southern institution for over five decades. “I’ve been in tune with how music can make you feel\, right from when I was first in the crib\,” observes lead vocalist and bandleader Doug Gray\, who’s been fronting the MTB since the very beginning. “I was born with that. And I realized it early on\, back when I was a little kid and my mom and dad encouraged me to get up there and sing whatever song came on the jukebox. It got to the point where people were listening to me more than what was on the jukebox! There’s a certain frequency I found I could share\, whether I was in front of five people or 20\,000 people. And once that frequency is there\, everybody will listen.” \nThe Marshall Tucker Band came together as a young\, hungry\, and quite driven six-piece outfit in Spartanburg\, South Carolina in 1972\, having duly baptized themselves with the name of a blind piano tuner after they found it inscribed on a key to their original rehearsal space — and they’ve been in tune with tearing it up on live stages both big and small all across the globe ever since. Plus\, the band’s mighty music catalog\, consisting of more than 20 studio albums and a score of live releases\, has racked up multi-platinum album sales many times over in its wake. A typically rich MTB setlist is bubbling over with a healthy dose of indelible hits like the heartfelt singalong “Heard It in a Love Song\,” the insistent pleading of “Can’t You See” (the signature tune of MTB’s late co-founding lead guitarist and then-principal songwriter Toy Caldwell)\, the testifying travelogue warning of “Fire on the Mountain\,” the wanderlust gallop of “Long Hard Ride\,” and the unquenchable yearning pitch of “Ramblin’\,” to name but a few. (See\, we can hear you singing along to all of them in your head right now as you read this.) \nIndeed\, the secret ingredient to the ongoing success of The Marshall Tucker Band can be found within a cauldron of musical styles that mixes together equal parts rock\, blues\, jazz\, country\, soul\, and bluegrass. In essence\, it’s this inimitable down-home sonic bouillabaisse that helped make the MTB the first truly progressive Southern band to grace this nation’s airwaves — the proof of which can be found within the gritty grooves and ever-shifting gears of “Take the Highway\,” the first song on their self-titled April 1973 debut album on Capricorn Records\, The Marshall Tucker Band. “We had the commonality of having all grown up together in Spartanburg\,” explains Gray about his original MTB bandmates\, the aforementioned guitar wizard Toy Caldwell and his brother\, bassist Tommy Caldwell\, alongside rhythm guitarist George McCorkle\, drummer Paul T. Riddle\, and flautist/saxophonist Jerry Eubanks. “The framework for Marshall Tucker’s music is more like a spaceship than a house\,” Gray continues\, “because you can look out of a lot of windows and see a variety of things that show where we’ve been and what we’ve done\, and how we’ve travelled through time to bring those experiences out in all of our songs.” \nThe Marshall Tucker Band’s influence can be felt far and wide through many respected contemporaries and the artists who’ve followed the path forged by their collective footsteps and footstomps. “MTB helped originate and personify what was to become known as Southern rock\, and I was privileged to watch it all come together in the ’70s\, night after night\,” confirms the legendary Charlie Daniels. “In fact\, The Charlie Daniels Band has played more dates with The Marshall Tucker Band over the past 45 years than any other band we’ve ever worked with. Even after all these years — after the tragedies\, the miles\, the personnel changes\, and the many developments in the music business — MTB and CDB are still a viable package that offers an entertaining and crowd-satisfying show.” Daniels adds that he never gets tired of seeing his MTB brothers on the road: “Whenever Doug Gray walks into my dressing room with that big ol’ smile of his and then we hug each other and sit and talk for a while\, the evening is complete.” \n“I remember seeing Marshall Tucker and The Outlaws play together in Jacksonville many years ago\, when I was just a kid\,” recalls Lynyrd Skynyrd lead singer Johnny Van Zant\, who faithfully watched the MTB open for his band on a few lengthy\, fruitful runs during the 2018 portion of Skynyrd’s still-in-progress The Last of the Street Survivors Farewell Tour. “And I heard them all over the radio back then too. They were just so cool and so unique that I fell in love with the band\, and I also fell in love with the music. Having them open for us on all those dates was like a dream come true\, and they’re still as good as I’ve ever seen them. It brought back a lot of memories for me\, because I really looked up to those guys when I was first starting out.” \nAdds Ed Roland\, the lead vocalist and chief songwriter for Collective Soul\, “The Marshall Tucker Band had a big influence on me growing up — and they still do.” Roland\, who’s lived the majority of his life in and around Atlanta\, also proudly points out that his band’s biggest hit\, “Shine\,” owes a clear debt to the musical structure of “Can’t You See\,” and he’ll often start off by singing the opening line to that song — “I’m gonna take a freight train” — whenever Collective Soul performs “Shine” live. “We don’t want to stray from what we grew up listening to\,” Roland continues. “I think that’s something important for people to hear. It’s just who we are\, and I don’t think we should run from it. Hopefully\, people see that connection to the bands we love like Marshall Tucker in our music.” \nThough Doug Gray recently turned 70 years young\, he sees no end to the road that lies ahead for The Marshall Tucker Band\, whose legacy is being carried forward quite reverentially by the man himself and his current bandmates\, drummer B.B. Borden (Mother’s Finest\, The Outlaws)\, bassist/vocalist Tony Black\, keyboardist/saxophonist/flautist/vocalist Marcus James Henderson\, guitarist/vocalist Chris Hicks\, and guitarist/vocalist Rick Willis. “You know\, I think it was Toy Caldwell’s dad who said\, ‘There’s more to gray hair than old bones\,’ and we still have a lot of stories yet to tell\,” Gray concludes. “People ask me all the time what I’m gonna do when I turn 80\, and I always say\, ‘The same thing that we’re continuing to do now.’ We’re road warriors\, there’s no doubt about that — and I don’t intend to stop.” May the MTB wagon train continue running like the wind on a long hard ride for many more years to come. Born into the legendary Black family – Aoife is steadily rising to the top of the traditional and folk music scene. Fragile and ethereal one minute and strong and vibrant the next\, Aoife has a dynamic and profound voice\, which explores the emotional depths of her lyrics\, leaving the audience entranced. Her music has a broad creative scope but is largely influenced by her own roots in folk and traditional Irish music. Her recent accolades in 2018\, have seen her named Best Folk Act at the Irish Post Music Awards (IRE)\, as well as Emerging Artist of the Year at the Live Ireland Awards (US). \nIn January of this year\, Aoife appeared on BBC2\, performing live from Celtic Connections in Scotland\, among many other TV and Media appearances. She currently appears every Sunday night in Ireland on national TV channel TG4 on the show “Realta & Gaolta” and presented live music performance show “The Windmill Lane Sessions”. \nAoife is a true veteran of the Irish & Folk Festival circuit\, having performed & headlined at dozens of festivals across the continents\, including The National Folk Festival & Port Fairy Folk Festival – Australia\, Mood Indigo Cultural Festival – India\, Milwaukee Irish Fest- USA\, Festival Interceltique de Lorient – France\, London Feis – UK\, and Temple Bar Trad Fest\, Ireland to name only a few. Some past successes has seen Aoife and her cousins\, Róisín O & Danny O Reilly from The Coronas\, released their single “Grace” which hit straight into the number 1 slot on iTunes in Ireland. DESCRIPTION:The Esbenshade Series at Marietta College presents: \nSteep Canyon Rangers in a free live streaming concert\n(View it here Nov 7th at 8pm www.facebook.com/peoplesbanktheatre/live ) \nSteep Canyon Rangers are Asheville\, North Carolina’s GRAMMY winners\, perennial Billboard chart-toppers\, and frequent collaborators of the renowned banjoist (and occasional comedian) Steve Martin. \nSteep Canyon Rangers re-signed with Yep Roc Records in 2019. “It feels like coming home\,” says Sharp of the partnership. “The Yep Roc family was among the first to welcome Steep Canyon Rangers when we were just pups. As we’ve grown\, so have they. We’re incredibly excited for the future and all the music it holds.” \nIn 2020 Steep Canyon Rangers have release two albums\, both on Yep Roc Records. The North Carolina Songbook which is is a recording of their live performance of all North Carolina Songwriters performed in 2019 at Merlefest in Wilkesboro\, NC. They also released Be Still Moses. Perhaps their most singular musical partnership to date – teaming with Philadelphia soul legends Boyz II Men and their hometown Asheville Symphony to completely overhaul the Rangers’ original “Be Still Moses\,” which was first recorded on their 2007 breakout album Lovin’ Pretty Women. The album includes re-imagined versions of Steep Canyon’s previously released original songs performed with an orchestra. \nThe Rangers are made up of Woody Platt on guitar and vocals\, Graham Sharp on banjo and vocals\, Mike Guggino on mandolin/mandola and vocals\, Nicky Sanders on fiddle and vocals\, Mike Ashworth on drums and vocals\, and Barrett Smith on bass and vocals. \nSteep Canyon Rangers have been on a journey that is uniquely their own. The band started in college at UNC-Chapel Hill\, then dove head first into bluegrass in its most traditional form\, and over the years have risen to the top of the bluegrass genre headlining top festivals such as Merlefest and Grey Fox Bluegrass. Only to then be discovered by Steve Martin\, famous actor and banjo player. Martin has taken the Rangers on a nearly decade long tour introducing them to hundreds of thousands of new fans and giving them prime time TV exposure. This has helped SCR become the most recognizable modern name in bluegrass music. The band has continued to tour extensively on their own\, without Martin\, and have expanded their genre into country and Americana with the addition of a drummer\, alongside an incredibly versatile bassist – to accompany the original core band. The Rangers are big players in the bluegrass/country and Americana scene today. He’s been the host and artistic director of the show since its beginning in 1983. \nLarry has recorded twenty-four albums. “Live Forever”\, recorded with his wife Sandra on viola and produced by Don Dixon (REM\, The Red Clay Ramblers\, James McMurtry)\, was released in 2016\, Larry’s top ten novelty single “Junk Food Junkie” was Dr. Demento’s Song of the Year in 1976 and one his children’s recordings for Walt Disney records was Grammy-nominated for “Children’s Record of the Year”. He’s been profiled in The New York Times\, People Magazine and other national publications and performed on The Tonight Show\, The Merv Griffin Show\, American Bandstand\, The Midnight Special\, The Rich Little Show\, Nashville Now\, The Disney Channel\, Doctor Demento\, and A Prairie Home Companion. Larry was born in Dallas where he went to high school with Michael Martin Murphy (“Wildfire”)\, Ray Wylie Hubbard (“Up Against the Wall Redneck Mothers”)\, and the late B.W. Stevenson (“My Maria”). Collin still continues to crank out soulful\, heartfelt material with the honesty and richness that is signature to his vocals alone. With 24 top ten records\, 16 #1 hits\, and having been a 10 time male vocalist of the year nominee (5 CMA and 5 ACM)\, this truly electrifying performer of his era remains one of the great voices of our time. \nCollin Raye is nothing if not passionate. His soulful delivery has set country standards in such searing ballads as “Love\, Me\,” “In This Life\,” “Not That Different” and “If I were you”. From those early days\, Walsh continually refined his skills and now has over four decades of musicianship and songwriting experience under his belt. \nHis special talent for lyrical depth coupled with an oft-times off-the-beaten-path style of chord progression and song structure renders unique\, listenable and memorable songs. His songs have been described as “intensely personal\,” “he sang what I wanted to say…” and\, “the lyrics read like a painting…” Walsh is also an accomplished guitarist and vocalist blessed with a very listenable tonal range. \nOver the years\, Walsh has written scores of songs and has performed both as a soloist and in a variety of bands all over the United States. John has had the opportunity to play on the same stage with notables such as Jason Isbell\, Lucy Kaplansky\, Tim O’Brien\, Dennis DeYoung\, Amanda Shires\, Larry Groce\, Todd Burge and Larkin Poe. He has released nine albums (as a soloist\, with The Fields of Gettysburg ensemble\, and with George’s Attic and The Fossils). \nAfter graduating from Salem College (Salem\, WV) in 1986\, John became an officer in the U.S. Air Force.  He and his wife\, Darlene\, married in 1987 and spent the next ten years living west of the Mississippi\, mostly while John served in the USAF.  They have lived in California\, Wyoming\, Texas\, Nevada and Iowa.  John also served a short tour in Saudi Arabia during Operation Southern Watch in 1995.  After separating from the USAF in 1996\, the Walsh’s ultimately settled back in the Mid-Ohio Valley at Vienna\, West Virginia.  John and Darlene have lived in Vienna\, West Virginia\, since 1996; and have two adult daughters\, Emily and Caroline. \nJohn became immediately active in the local music scene after relocating to Vienna.  In addition to playing live regularly\, Walsh has recorded his music extensively.  He served as a board member of the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame; and\, on the Colony Theater Hippodrome Restoration board (now the Peoples Bank Theatre in Marietta\, Ohio).  Walsh was instrumental in the development and opening of The Adelphia Music Hall\, now a premier live music venue in Marietta. \nIn 2013\, John released The Fields of Gettysburg to coincide with the sesquicentennial anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg.  John’s all original song cycle brought real historical characters to life\, enabling the listener to get to know people of the day on a personal level.  The record\, co-produced by Parkersburg singer/songwriter\, Todd Burge\, brought together an impressive ensemble of musicians\, including Mountain Stage’s Larry Groce and Michael Lipton\, two-time Grammy winner Tim O’Brien\, Jessica Baldwin\, Colton Pack and Justin Arthur.  Met with wide critical acclaim\, The Fields of Gettysburg was featured on NPR’s Mountain Stage and at The Gettysburg National Park’s Museum Gift Store.  The album is currently available at Tamarack’s “The Best of West Virginia.” \nWriting and performing music is John’s passion.  His acoustic sets are a blend of Walsh original music\, the classic singer/songwriter songs of the 1960s & 1970s\, as well as new Americana.  John’s show provides an easy and inviting vibe that promises an enjoyable\, relaxing musical experience. \n  \nThank you for your continuous support of the Peoples Bank Theatre. DESCRIPTION:Theirs is one of the most distinctive and recognizable sounds in the music industry. The four-part harmonies and upbeat songs of The Oak Ridge Boys have spawned dozens of Country hits and a Number One Pop smash\, earned them Grammy\, Dove\, CMA\, and ACM awards and garnered a host of other industry and fan accolades. Every time they step before an audience\, the Oaks bring four decades of charted singles\, and 50 years of tradition\, to a stage show widely acknowledged as among the most exciting anywhere. And each remains as enthusiastic about the process as they have ever been. “When I go on stage\, I get the same feeling I had the first time I sang with The Oak Ridge Boys\,” says lead singer Duane Allen. “This is the only job I’ve ever wanted to have.” “Like everyone else in the group\,” adds bass singer extraordinaire\, Richard Sterban\, “I was a fan of the Oaks before I became a member. I’m still a fan of the group today. Being in The Oak Ridge Boys is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream.” The two\, along with tenor Joe Bonsall and baritone William Lee Golden\, comprise one of Country’s truly legendary acts. Their string of hits includes the Country-Pop chart-topper Elvira\, as well as Bobbie Sue\, Dream On\, Thank God For Kids\, American Made\, I Guess It Never Hurts To Hurt Sometimes\, Fancy Free\, Gonna Take A Lot Of River and many others. In 2009\, they covered a White Stripes song\, receiving accolades from Rock reviewers. In 2011\, they rerecorded a thirtieth anniversary version of Elvira for a Cracker Barrel Old Country Store project. \nThe group has scored 12 gold\, three platinum\, and one double platinum album—plus one double platinum single—and had more than a dozen national Number One singles and over 30 Top Ten hits. \nGospel Music Roots \nThe Oaks represent a tradition that extends back to World War II. The original group\, based in Knoxville\, Tennessee\, began performing Country and Gospel music in nearby Oak Ridge where the atomic bomb was being developed. They called themselves the Oak Ridge Quartet\, and they began regular Grand Ole Opry appearances in the fall of ‘45. In the mid-fifties\, they were featured in Time magazine as one of the top drawing Gospel groups in the nation. By the late ‘60s\, with more than 30 members having come and gone\, they had a lineup that included Duane Allen\, William Lee Golden\, Noel Fox\, and Willie Wynn. Among the Oaks’ many acquaintances in the Gospel field were Bonsall\, a streetwise Philadelphia kid who embraced Gospel music; and Sterban\, who was singing in quartets and holding down a job as a men’s clothing salesman. Both admired the distinctive\, highly popular Oaks. “They were the most innovative quartet in Gospel music\,” says Bonsall. “They performed Gospel with a Rock approach\, had a full band\, wore bell-bottom pants and grew their hair long…things unheard of at the time.” The four became friends\, and when the Oaks needed a bass and tenor in ‘72 and ’73\, respectively\, Sterban and Bonsall got the calls. For a while\, the group remained at the pinnacle of the Gospel music circuit. It was there they refined the strengths that would soon make them an across-the-board attraction. “We did a lot of package shows\,” says Bonsall. “There was an incredible amount of competition. You had to blow people away to sell records and get invited back.” Their Gospel sound had a distinct Pop edge to it and\, although it made for excitement and crowd appeal\, it also ruffled purist feathers and left promoters unsure about the Oaks’ direction. Then in 1975\, the Oaks were asked to open a number of dates for Roy Clark. Clark’s manager\, Jim Halsey\, was impressed by their abilities. “He came backstage and told us we were three-and-a-half minutes (meaning one hit record) away from being a major act\,” says Bonsall. “He said we had one of the most dynamic stage shows he’d ever seen but that we had to start singing Country songs.” They took his advice and the result was a breakthrough. “Those who came to Country music with or after the New Traditionalists of the mid-eighties cannot possibly imagine the impact the Oaks had in 1977\, when they lit up the sky from horizon to horizon with Y’All Come Back Saloon\,” wrote Billboard’s Ed Morris. He added\, “…the vocal intensity the group brought to it instantly enriched and enlivened the perilously staid Country format. These guys were exciting.” \nThe Oaks branch out \nTheir career has spanned not only decades\, but also formats. In 1977\, Paul Simon tapped the Oaks to sing backup for his hit Slip Slidin’ Away\, and they went on to record with George Jones\, Brenda Lee\, Johnny Cash\, Roy Rogers\, Billy Ray Cyrus\, Bill Monroe\, Ray Charles and even Shooter Jennings\, the son of their old friend Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter. Most recently\, the group recorded a duet with Merle Haggard for their 2015 Rock of Ages hymns and Gospel favorites album.

When Tippin began recording\, Clint Black was on top of the charts\, along with the Judds and Keith Whitley. His first single\, “You’ve Got To Stand For Something\,” with its message of standing up for one’s personal beliefs\, became popular as an anthem for soldiers fighting in the Gulf War. After its release in 1991\, it hit the Billboard Country Singles chart – eventually peaking at # 6. He built his brand on songs that touched a nerve with his blue-collar audience with a sound that was definitely Country. In the past decade\, Tippin has recorded several musically diverse projects – including a well received 2009 truck driving album\, In Overdrive.
