SUMMARY:Michael Carbonaro
DESCRIPTION:CARBONARO: LIES ON STAGE\nBest known as the star and executive producer of the hit series THE CARBONARO EFFECT on truTV\, Michael Carbonaro has also made frequent television appearances in shows such as Happily Divorced\, 30 Rock\, Grey’s Anatomy\, and CSI Miami. A performing magician since his youth\, Carbonaro went on to study experimental theater at New York University with aspirations of entertaining audiences through a variety of theatrical mediums\, including hidden-camera magic\, which he later showcased frequently on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.” \nFollowing Carbonaro’s frequent late-night appearances\, Michael was presented with the opportunity to launch his hit comedic series\, “The Carbonaro Effect\,” which has run for over 100 episodes on truTV and currently airs on HBO Max and in syndication worldwide. In this series\, Michael performs inventive tricks on unsuspecting members of the public who are unaware that he is a magician. Jaws drop when he causes a car to disappear from under a security guard’s nose or makes alien crabs transform into kittens in a science lab. Whether posing as a coffee shop barista\, museum curator\, or seemingly unremarkable store clerk in the REAL world\, Carbonaro’s illusions – along with his absurd\, matter-of-fact explanations – leave REAL people bewildered and families at home laughing out loud. \nIn 2016 Michael embarked on his first theater tour with the widely acclaimed show “Michael Carbonaro Live!” Since its debut\, Michael has performed this show over 200 times to sold-out audiences across the country\, cementing him as one of the most dynamic entertainers of his generation. Now Michael is back with a brand-new show – “Carbonaro: Lies on Stage” – which will continue to showcase his unmatched blend of humor and charisma along with inventive illusions\, which will amaze audiences of all ages. \nVIP includes an after show Meet & Greet with Michael Carbonaro!  Michael will be excited to meet you\, take photos\, and sign an item of your choosing! \n  \nEnjoy all of our upcoming performances on our new Byrider Stage!

SUMMARY:Esbenshade Series: Fran Lebowitz
DESCRIPTION:In a cultural landscape filled with endless pundits and talking heads\, Fran Lebowitz stands out as one of our most insightful social commentators. \nHer essays and interviews offer her acerbic views on current events and the media–as well as pet peeves including tourists\, baggage-claim areas\, after-shave lotion\, adults who roller skate\, children who speak French\, or anyone who is unduly tan. The New York Times Book Review calls Lebowitz an “important humorist in the classic tradition.” Purveyor of urban cool\, Lebowitz is a cultural satirist whom many call the heir to Dorothy Parker. \nLebowitz on special interest groups: “Special-interest publications should realize that if they are attracting enough advertising and readers to make a profit\, the interest is not so special.” Lebowitz on frankness: “Spilling your guts is exactly as charming as it sounds.” Lebowitz on herself: “Success didn’t spoil me\, I’ve always been insufferable.” This is Lebowitz off the cuff. Her writing—pointed\, taut and economical—is equally forthright\, irascible\, and unapologetically opinionated. \nLebowitz worked odd jobs\, such as taxi driving\, belt peddling\, and apartment cleaning(“with a small specialty in Venetian blinds”)\, before being hired by Andy Warhol as a columnist for Interview. That was followed by a stint at Mademoiselle. Her first book\, a collection of essays titled Metropolitan Life\, was a bestseller\, as was a second collection\, Social Studies. By turns ironic\, facetious\, deadpan\, sarcastic\, wry\, wisecracking\, and waggish\, Lebowitz’s prose is wickedly entertaining. Her two books are collected in the Fran Lebowitz Reader\, with a new preface by the author. The Fran Lebowitz Reader has been published in nine languages including French\, Korean\, Russian\, Spanish\, and Turkish. Lebowitz is also the author of the children’s book\, Mr. Chas and Lisa Sue Meet the Pandas. \nBetween 2001 to 2007\, Lebowitz had a recurring role as Judge Janice Goldberg on the television drama Law & Order. She also had a part in the Martin Scorsese-directed film\, The Wolf of Wall Street (2013). A raconteur if ever there was one\, Lebowitz has long been a regular on various talk shows including those hosted by Jimmy Fallon\, Conan O’Brien\, and Bill Maher. In an interview with the Paris Review\, Lebowitz said “I’m not a nervous person. I’m not afraid to be on TV. I’m only afraid when I write. When I’m at my desk I feel like most people would feel if they went on TV.” \nShe can also be seen in various documentary films\, including the American Experience series on New York City\, as well as Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures (2016)\, Regarding Susan Sontag (2014)\, and Superstar: The Life and Times of Andy Warhol (1990)\, among others. In 2010 Martin Scorsese directed a documentary about Lebowitz for HBO titled Public Speaking. A limited documentary series\, Pretend It’s a City\, also directed by Martin Scorsese\, premiered on Netflix in 2021\, and was nominated for the 2021 Emmys in the Outstanding Documentary Or Nonfiction Series category. In 2021\, she was given the Forte dei Marmi Festival della Satira Lifetime Achievement Award and was a 2021 Foreign Press Honorary Awardee–an award given by the Foreign Press Correspondents Association & Club USA. \nLebowitz was named to Vanity Fair’s International Best Dressed List Hall of Fame in 2008.She remains a style icon. Lebowitz lives in New York City\, as she does not believe that she would be allowed to live anywhere else. \nEnjoy all of our upcoming performances on our new Byrider Stage!

SUMMARY:Jason Bishop
DESCRIPTION:Jason Bishop has starred in two Off-Broadway shows\, Jason Bishop – Straight Up Magic and Jason Bishop – Believe in Magic\, both at the New Victory Theater on New York’s famed 42nd Street. He’s been featured on NBC’s Today Show\, CW Network’s Masters of Illusion\, Canada’s popular Breakfast Television Toronto\, and Europe’s legendary Le Plus Grand Cabaret Du Monde\, filmed in Paris\, France. The New York Times said\, “How did he do that?\,” and\, “There’s real elegance and even wit in the precision of his gestures\, the agility of each finger.” Jason’s life journey was also the cover story for Southwest Airlines April 2019 issue\, which has over 6 million readers. \nFrom his astounding “Cage Levitation” and “Walking Through a Brick Wall” to his cutting-edge “Teleportation” and “Plasma” illusions\, Bishop features stunning and original state-of-the-art magic. One thing that distinguishes Jason is his virtuosity. Each show features award-winning sleight of hand\, exclusive grand illusions\, and close-up magic projected onto a large screen. No other illusionist presents such a diverse array of talents. Additionally\, the show is delivered with a contemporary design\, attitude\, and soundtrack. Bishop’s performance focuses on entertaining audiences with one remarkable illusion after another. With the wit and timing of a professional comedian\, each routine is presented in Bishop’s unique style\, with some illusions featuring many more laughs than expected from an illusionist\, while other effects demonstrate sleight of hand performed with precision and artistry. His performance abilities have led him from China to Paris and Hollywood to New York City\, as well as every state in-between and over 30 countries on six continents. \nBishop’s interest in magic ran throughout his youth\, truly taking shape in his mid-teens. In college\, Jason studied theatre and then went on the road performing at resorts and amusement parks\, anywhere he could find an audience\, including the street. As audiences’ enjoyment of the show grew\, he began imagining and designing his illusions to become larger and more impressive. Some of Jason Bishop’s awards and citations include the key to the city of Lake Charles Louisiana\, awarded the honor of a “Kentucky Colonel\,” the magic industry’s prestigious “Jack Gwynne Award for Excellence in Presentation” and “Performing Artist of the Year” by the Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities. He is also the only illusionist to have not one but two productions in New York City at the acclaimed New Victory Theater. \nBishop has entertained celebrities like Jordin Sparks\, Jennifer Aniston\, Hank Azaria\, James Spader\, and Jason Alexander\, among others. Jason’s combination of fast-paced illusions\, music\, comedy\, sleight of hand and audience participation has landed him in notable venues\, including Hollywood’s famous Magic Castle\, the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis\, MD\, LiveNation’ s Bamboozle Festival to name just a few. Currently\, Bishop performs in theaters and Performing Arts Centers throughout the United States\, as well as at private corporate events. \n[av_video src=’https://vimeo.com/336010679′ mobile_image=” attachment=” attachment_size=” format=’16-9′ width=’16’ height=’9′ conditional_play=” av_uid=” custom_class=”] \n

SUMMARY:Cirque Mechanics
DESCRIPTION:42FT – A Menagerie of Mechanical Marvels\nAt the center of every circus rests a 42ft ring full of thrills\, laughs and excitement. 42FT – A Menagerie of Mechanical Marvels\, is the latest invention from the creative minds of Cirque Mechanics. The company dares us to leap into the circus ring and experience the timelessness of this evolving art form. The shows’ unique mechanical interpretation of the traditional\, and its story full of the lore of the historic one-ring circus\, create a welcoming place\, like a big top\, where we can be amazed. The action in 42FT is full of theatricality and a modern sensibility\, showcasing a galloping mechanical metal horse and a rotating tent frame for strongmen\, acrobats and aerialists. \nhttps://vimeo.com/292723946 \nCirque Mechanics\, inspired by modern circus\, finds its roots in the mechanical and its heart in the stories of American industrial ingenuity. The shows\, imbedded in realism\, display a raw quality rarely found in modern circus. Cirque Mechanics signature style is wrapped in acrobatics\, mechanical marvels\, and a bit of clowning around. 42FT follows the great successes of Birdhouse Factory\, Boomtown\, and Pedal Punk. \nStep right up ladies and gentlemen\, boys and girls\, to the Cirque Mechanics world of gears and canvas\, pulleys and sawdust- within 42FT. \nAbout Cirque Mechanics\nCirque Mechanics was founded in 2004 by Boston native and German Wheel artist\, Chris Lashua\, after the success of his collaborative project with the Circus Center of San Francisco\, Birdhouse Factory. Cirque Mechanics quickly established itself as a premiere American circus\, with its unique approach to performance\, inspiring storytelling and innovative mechanical staging. Spectacle Magazine hailed it as “the greatest contribution to the American circus since Cirque du Soleil”.

SUMMARY:David McCullough: The Pioneers - SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Marietta College presents an evening with Pulitzer Prize–winning historian David McCullough\, whose new book\, The Pioneers\, rediscovers an important and dramatic chapter in the American story—the settling of the Northwest Territory by dauntless pioneers who overcame incredible hardships to build a community based on ideals that would come to define our country. \nThere will not be a book signing at this event. Pre-signed and unsigned books will be available for purchase. For additional event information\, call the Marietta College Legacy Library at 740-376-4757. \nOverflow viewing:\nMarietta College will offer an overflow viewing area in the Alma McDonough Auditorium\, which is located on campus in the McDonough Center for Leadership and Business. Admission to McDonough for this event starts at 6:15 p.m.\, and will be available on a first-come\, first-served basis. Click here for full details. \nAbout the Book\nAs part of the Treaty of Paris\, in which Great Britain recognized the new United States of America\, Britain ceded the land that comprised the immense Northwest Territory\, a wilderness empire northwest of the Ohio River containing the future states of Ohio\, Indiana\, Illinois\, Michigan\, and Wisconsin. A Massachusetts minister named Manasseh Cutler was instrumental in opening this vast territory to veterans of the Revolutionary War and their families for settlement. Included in the Northwest Ordinance were three remarkable conditions: freedom of religion\, free universal education\, and most importantly\, the prohibition of slavery. In 1788 the first band of pioneers set out from New England for the Northwest Territory under the leadership of Revolutionary War veteran General Rufus Putnam. They settled in what is now Marietta on the banks of the Ohio River. \nMcCullough tells the story through five major characters: Cutler and Putnam; Cutler’s son Ephraim; and two other men\, one a carpenter turned architect\, and the other a physician who became a prominent pioneer in American science. They and their families created a town in a primeval wilderness\, while coping with such frontier realities as floods\, fires\, wolves and bears\, no roads or bridges\, no guarantees of any sort\, all the while negotiating a contentious and sometimes hostile relationship with the native people. Like so many of McCullough’s subjects\, they let no obstacle deter or defeat them. \nDrawn in great part from a rare and all-but-unknown collection of diaries and letters by the key figures\, The Pioneers is a uniquely American story of people whose ambition and courage led them to remarkable accomplishments. This is a revelatory and quintessentially American story\, written with David McCullough’s signature narrative energy. \nAbout the author\nDavid McCullough has twice received the Pulitzer Prize\, for Truman and John Adams\, and twice received the National Book Award\, for The Path Between the Seas and Mornings on Horseback. His other acclaimed books include The Johnstown Flood\, The Great Bridge\, Brave Companions\, 1776\, The Greater Journey\, and The Wright Brothers. He is the recipient of numerous honors and awards\, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom\, the nation’s highest civilian award.
