He is the master of satire and one of today’s most observant writers addressing the human condition\, especially apparent in his latest book\, a collection of his diaries entitled Theft By Finding: Diaries (1977-2002) (May 2017). \n\n\n\n\nBeloved for his personal essays and short stories\, David Sedaris is the author of Barrel Fever\, Holidays on Ice\, Naked\, Me Talk Pretty One Day\, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim\, When You Are Engulfed in Flames\, Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls\, and Theft By Finding: Diaries (1977-2002). He is the author of Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk:A Modest Bestiary\, a collection of fables with illustrations by Ian Falconer. Each of these books was an immediate bestseller. He was also the editor of Children Playing Before a Statue of Hercules: An Anthology of Outstanding Stories. His pieces regularly appear in The New Yorker and have twice been included in “The Best American Essays.” There are over ten million copies of his books in print and they have been translated into 25 languages. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHe and his sister\, Amy Sedaris\, have collaborated under the name “The Talent Family” and have written half-a-dozen plays which have been produced at La Mama\, Lincoln Center\, and The Drama Department in New York City. These plays include Stump the Host\, Stitches\, One Woman Shoe\, which received an Obie Award\, Inci- dent at Cobbler’s Knob\, and The Book of Liz\, which was published in book form by Dramatists Play Service. \nSedaris’s original audio pieces can often be heard on the public radio show This American Life. He has been nominated for three Grammy Awards for Best Spoken Word and Best Comedy Album. His latest audio recording of new stories (recorded live) is “David Sedaris: Live for Your Listening Pleasure” (November 2009). A feature film adaptation of his story C.O.G. was released after a premiere at the Sundance Film Festival (2013). Since 2011\, he can be heard annually on a series of live recordings on BBC Radio 4 entitled “Meet David Sedaris.” \nAs a companion piece to Theft By Finding\, Jeffrey Jenkins published and edited an art book of Sedaris’s diary covers\, entitled David Sedaris Diaries: A Visual Compendium (October 2017). The two-hour radio show is produced in West Virginia and distributed by National Public Radio weekly on more than 150 stations across America and around the world via NPR Music and mountainstage.org. The show\, which is recorded before a live audience\, features performances by seasoned legends and emerging stars in genres ranging from folk\, blues and country to indie rock\, synth pop\, world and alternative music\, and beyond. \nSinger/songwriter Larry Groce serves as the show’s host\, artistic director and co-producer. The Mountain Stage house band includes jazz pianist Bob Thompson\, vocalist Julie Adams\, bass player Steve Hill\, drummer Ammed Solomon and guitarists Michael Lipton and Ryan Kennedy. The band is directed by Ron Sowell. \nPeoples Bank Theatre and Mountain Stage with Larry Groce are excited to announce four of the guests for the radio show’s first appearance in the Pioneer City on April 9: John Németh & The Blue Dreamers\, Edward David Anderson\, Shemekia Copeland\, Bridget Kearney\, and The T Sisters. \nJohn Németh \nJohn Németh had already established himself among the very top ranks of blues musicians and modern soul singers when he decided to break the mold with his new record\, FEELIN’ FREAKY. Németh fearlessly crushes all barriers of style and genre with an album of original songs that defies all the usual pigeonholes. Drawing from his strong influences in blues and R&B\, as well as contemporary sounds in hip hop and rock & roll\, John creates music that is personal as well as universal\, and owes its origin to no one but John Németh. John’s songs are groove and melody-driven\, laced with thoughtful lyrics and nuanced humor\, and cover themes from social issues of gun violence and class values to the pure hedonistic joy of dancing\, sexuality and marijuana. He creates his songs from melodies and phrases he draws from the sounds of life\, from early-morning Memphis songbirds to the din of the city. For this album John brought his new songs to his great touring band\, the Blue Dreamers – Danny Banks on drums\, Matthew Wilson on bass and guitar\, and Johnny Rhodes on guitar. \nEdward David Anderson \nEdward David Anderson is one of music’s modern makers\, a rock & roll veteran who spent his formative years fronting the revered Midwest band\, Backyard Tire Fire. Known for infectious melodies and memorable messages Anderson penned 8 albums for the band and played countless shows across the US and Canada. Their eventual hiatus fostered his solo debut\, Lies & Wishes (2014\, Royal Potato Family) working with friend and Grammy winning producer Steve Berlin of Los Lobos.  A serendipitous move south in 2013 introduced him to ‘Lower Alabama’ where he found the culture and beaches provided reprieve from life on the road and a second home. He quickly immersed himself into the rich and welcoming LA music scene where he met producer Anthony Crawford (Neil Young\, Willie Sugarcapps) and recorded Lower Alabama: The Loxley Sessions over the winter of 2014. The album floats melodiously on rivers of fiddle and clouds of pedal steel\, on gentle acoustic guitars and hints of piano\, dusted with some ghostly guitar from Will Kimbrough and striking vocal harmony by Crawford’s wife\, singer Savana Lee. The nine-song collection steps firmly into the Americana world and was hailed “A wonderfully soulful record” by David Dye (NPR’s World Cafe) and “A simply infectious album” by No Depression. \nShemekia Copeland \nWhether she’s belting out a raucous blues-rocker\, firing up a blistering soul-shouter\, bringing the spirit to a gospel-fueled R&B rave-up or digging deep down into a subtle\, country-tinged ballad\, Shemekia Copeland sounds like no one else. This month\, Shemekia was nominated as the 38th Annual Blues Music Award’s Contemporary Blues Female Artist. Shemekia won that same category in 2016 after the release of Outskirts of Love. Her acclaimed eighth album\, released by Alligator Records in September 2015\, was also nominated for a Grammy Award. \nThe Chicago Tribune says Copeland delivers “gale force singing and power” with a “unique\, gutsy style\, vibrant emotional palette and intuitive grasp of the music.” NPR Music calls her “fiercely expressive.” She has sung with Eric Clapton\, Bonnie Raitt\, B.B. King\, Buddy Guy\, Mick Jagger\, Keith Richards\, Carlos Santana\, James Cotton and opened for The Rolling Stones. \nBridget Kearney \nOver the past 12 years\, Bridget Kearney has toured the world as the bassist of the soul pop sensation Lake Street Dive. An incredibly versatile musician\, Kearney has always been voraciously collaborative\, dabbling in chamber pop with the Brooklyn group Cuddle Magic\, bluegrass with the now defunct Boston outfit Joy Kills Sorrow\, and Ghanian music as part of a duo with fellow songwriter Benjamin Lazar Davis. Influenced at a young age by Tejano\, Western Swing\, Rhythm and Blues and War songs\, he developed a signature sound that served him well. \nDelbert grew up around Lubbock and Fort Worth\, and spent his early career in the desegregating roadhouses of Fort Worth’s Jacksboro Highway\, leading the house bands for Jimmy Reed\, Muddy Waters\, Bo Diddley\, and others\, while making a local name for himself. Later\, Delbert traveled to England where he headlined shows with Bruce Channel (“Hey Baby”) with a little-known Liverpool band [The Beatles] as the opening act. He then rolled into Los Angeles as songwriters began to take top billing\, and headed back to Texas for the progressive movement and blues renaissance that helped kick off Austin’s role in American musical history. \nIf you’ve seen a live Delbert McClinton show\, you will recognize the synchronized energy on Prick Of The Litter that comes from thousands of miles of playing together. Delbert feels that his current road band\, Self-Made Men\, is the best band he’s ever had. \n“Jack Bruno [drums] is amazing. He played with Joe Cocker and with Tina Turner for years. I’ve been harder on drummers than anybody in the world\, but Jack is right there where I need him. Dana Robbins [saxophone] and Quentin ‘Q’ Ware [trumpet] punctuate the live performances in just the right places. James Pennebaker [guitar] is family. He’s been playing with me off and on since he was nineteen. Mike Joyce [bass guitar]\, Kevin McKendree [piano]\, and Bob Britt [guitar] are among my best friends\, in addition to being in the band. Mike and Kevin and I write together a lot. We wrote most of the songs on this album together.” \nDelbert\, Kevin and Bob also co-produced Prick Of The Litter. “Going into the studio with a band that’s like family creates real magic\,” says Delbert. “You have the energy of a live band. We feed off of each other. We are better together. And it always feels like they have my back.” Jimmie Vaughan and Lou Ann Barton are an added bonus on the first track. Delbert adds “I am such a fan of Lou Ann and of Jimmie. We needed a female to do a part on ‘Don’t Do It.’ Bob suggested Lou Ann\, and I knew she would be perfect. I have always loved Jimmie and Lou Ann. I had talked to Jimmie about doing something on my last album but it didn’t work out. So this time\, we went to Austin and they both came into the studio. We spent about two hours and had a lot of fun. They are both so talented.” \nDelbert wrote or co-wrote ten of the songs on the album. “By the time we wrote these songs\, Mike\, Bob and Kevin had been in my band for a long time\,” says Delbert. “We got together every Wednesday for several weeks\, and then we went to Mexico and finished writing the rest of the album.” \n2017 is a milestone year for Delbert. In addition to the release of Prick Of The Litter\, a biography is slated for release in September. He has also been nominated for Texas State Musician\, a highly acclaimed state appointment akin to poet laureate. \nPrick of the Litter is a signature project for Delbert McClinton\, and he is proud of it. “We worked hard on this and we got exactly what we wanted\,” he says. “The songs\, the band\, the production. Everything came together. We didn’t leave no chicken on the bone\,” he says. \n“I did what I came to do with this album. I guess I really am One of the Fortunate Few.”

It could swing with the best of them\, and no other band could come close to Tommy’s when it came to playing ballads. Tommy Dorsey\, “The Sentimental Gentleman of Swing”\, was a master at creating warm\, sentimental\, and always musical moods – at superb dancing and listening tempos. Tommy sustained these moods through the arrangements of the likes of Paul Weston\, Axel Stordahl and Sy Oliver\, and he showcased singers who could project them brilliantly. \nJack Leonard sang with the band for about four years\, recording such fine sides as “Dedicated To You”\, “If It’s The Last Thing I do”\, “Little White Lies”\, “You Taught Me To Love Again”\, “Once In A While”\, and\, probably the most famous of all\, “Marie”. With the band singing vocal riffs as Jack sang the straight lyric\, “Marie” was so successful that he recorded several more standard tunes with the same formula. They include “Who”\, “Yearning”\, and “East Of The Sun”. “Song Of India”\, the other side of “Marie”\, was also a huge Dorsey hit. \nFrank Sinatra’s career blossomed with Dorsey\, and\, with Sinatra’s vocals\, the band became more successful than ever. Frank had often admitted that listening to Tommy helped him develop his phrasing and breathing\, along with his musical taste and knowledge. \nSy Oliver infused the band with a new musical spirit. It was a gentler version of the rocking\, rhythmic sounds that he had created for Jimmy Lunceford\, toned down somewhat and played with more precision by the Dorsey Band. These original tunes included “Easy Does It”\, “Quiet Please”\, “Sing High”\, “Yes\, Indeed”\, “Swingin’ On Nothing”\, “Well\, Git It”\, and “Opus No 1”. Oliver also had a unique way of approaching a straight pop tune\, injecting a soft\, two-beat feeling into. He did this with resounding success in such arrangements as “What Can I Say After I Say I’m Sorry? “\, “For You”\, “Swanee River”\, “Mandy”\, “Make Up Your Mind”\, “Chicago”\, and “On The Sunny Side Of The Street”. \nThe vocalists worked both individually and together\, turning out several hits of superior quality. There was Sinatra’s “This Love of Mine”\, Jo Stafford’s “Embraceable You”\, the Pied Pipers’ and Sinatra’s “There Are Such Things”\, “Just As Though You Were Here”\, “Street Of Dreams”\, and “Oh\, Look At Me Now”. Their biggest hit of all\, the one that established vocal groups forever\, was “I’ll Never Smile Again”. \nThe Band was at its best in this decade. In the summer of 1941\, it outranked every other band to finish first in one of the most indicative of all popularity polls\, Martin Block’s Make Believe Ballroom contest. \nBy late 1946\, it was becoming apparent that the band business was having problems. In December 1946\, eight top bandleaders announced they were calling it quits – Woody Herman\, Benny Goodman\, Harry James\, Les Brown\, Jack Teagarden\, Benny Carter\, Ina Ray Hutton and Tommy Dorsey. Essentially\, this was the official end of the Big Band Era. However\, it was Tommy Dorsey who\, in the years immediately following\, fought the case of the big bands with words and action. Less than two years later\, he was fronting a formidable new group.\nIt’s about time somebody got things going again”\, Tommy said at the time. “You can’t expect to have any real interest in dance bands if the bands don’t go around the country and play for the kids.” \nAnd so it continues. The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra is still traveling throughout the country playing “for the kids” (of all ages).

In the years that followed\, many of the Steps ignored the conventional wisdom (“Don’t quit your day job!”)\, and although not all of the current members of the Steps are former Capitol Hill staffers\, taken together the performers have worked in a total of eighteen Congressional offices and represent 62 years of collective House and Senate staff experience. \nSince they began\, the Capitol Steps have recorded over 35 albums\, including their latest\, What to Expect When You’re Electing. They’ve been featured on NBC\, CBS\, ABC\, and PBS\, and can be heard twice a year on National Public Radio stations nationwide during their Politics Takes a Holiday radio specials. \nThe Capitol Steps were born in December\, 1981 when some staffers for Senator Charles Percy were planning entertainment for a Christmas party. Ronald Reagan was President when the Steps began\, so co-founders Elaina Newport\, Bill Strauss and Jim Aidala figured that if entertainers could become politicians\, then politicians could become entertainers! Their first idea was to stage a nativity play\, but in the whole Congress they couldn’t find three wise men or a virgin! So\, they decided to dig into the headlines of the day\, and created song parodies & skits which conveyed a special brand of satirical humor that was as popular in Peoria as it was on Pennsylvania Avenue. \nMost cast members have worked on Capitol Hill; some for Democrats\, some for Republicans\, and others for politicians who firmly straddle the fence. No matter who holds office\, there’s never a shortage of material. Says Elaina Newport\, “Typically the Republicans goof up\, and the Democrats party. Then the Democrats goof up and the Republicans party. That’s what we call the two-party system.” \nALTHOUGH the Capitol Steps are based in Washington\, DC\, most of their shows are out-of-town or for out-of-town audiences\, whether it’s the National Welding Supply Association\, a University audience\, High Schoolers\, or State Legislators. In fact\, the Capitol Steps have performed for the last 5 Presidents (6\, if you include Hillary). The only complaints the Steps seem to get are from politicians and personalities who are not included in the program! \nNo matter who or what is in the headlines\, you can bet the Capitol Steps will tackle both sides of the political spectrum and all things equally foolish. Between collaborations with Darrell Scott\, the recent Grammy-winning recording with Jerry Douglas’s Earls of Leicester and the rebooting of Hot Rize; he’s barely had time for a shower. Still\, somewhere in O’Brien’s vivid imagination\, the seeds of Pompadour began to sprout. The fruits of his recent wanderings\, music making and worldly observations have blossomed into eleven exquisitely varied\, true-to-life and above all musical tracks. \nEach of O’Brien’s solo albums has a distinctive identity. Many have specific themes\, including Red on Blonde\, an insightful collection of Bob Dylan compositions\, and his Grammy-winning celebration of Appalachian music and its Celtic roots\, Fiddler’s Green. So it is with Pompadour\, or at least most of it. “It’s kind of a breakup record\,” O’Brien says. “I separated from my wife four years ago and got divorced a year after that. So there’s a breakup\, an assessment and ultimately delight at the end.” \nWhat separates Pompadour from his previous thematic albums? O’Brien answers by looking back to his first nationally released album. “When I did Hard Year Blues\, a friend said\, ‘This is kind of like a Chinese menu; there are so many options here. What’s the theme?’ It was really eclectic. Now\, with Pompadour\, I’ve sort of melded things together\, like the flavors in a stew.” \nPompadour swirls together bits of bluegrass\, deep-roots Appalachian music\, field hollers\, old-school rock ‘n’ roll\, traditional jazz and even James Brownian funk. \nJD Hutchison \n \n  \nJ.D. Hutchison is a native of the Appalachian region of southeastern Ohio. He was born\, the second of four sons to John Williams and Emma Jane Harper Hutchison\, in a tiny three-room house located one mile west of the town square in the village of Barnesville. His was a musical family. His father was a well-known guitarist and fiddler in the community; he often appeared with his wife (J.D.’s mother) as a singing duo at public functions in the area. There seemed to be an unfailing congregation of local players nearby every week at someone-or-another’s house where a plentiful table would be at the ready and music would prevail until all were played out. These conditions imbued JD from early childhood with a strong affection and affinity for tradition-based string music.

Since 1991 Bob Thompson has been the pianist\, and a regularly featured artist on West Virginia’s NPR syndicated radio show\, Mountain Stage. For the past twenty-three years he has also been co-producer and host of Joy to the World\, a holiday jazz show\, broadcast on public radio stations nationwide\, and heard internationally on the Voice of America. In October 2015\, Bob Thompson was inducted into the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame. \nBob makes his home in Charleston\, West Virginia\, and has enjoyed a long and active career as a performer\, composer\, arranger\, and educator. For decades he has played at festivals and concerts around the country\, and has also taken his music to Europe\, Africa\, and South America. \nBob Thompson’s resume includes guest appearances on Marian Mcpartland’s Piano Jazz\, on National Public Radio\, and Bet on Jazz with Ramsey Lewis. His recordings on Intima records\, and Ichiban international\, received high recognition on the jazz charts\, with several reaching the top ten. His recent recordings\, Bob Thompson “Live” on Mountain Stage\, and Smile\, with the Bob Thompson Unit\, are on his own label\, colortones.com. \nBob’s current group\, the Bob Thompson Band\, has a new recording\, “Look beyond the Rain\,” released January 8\, 2016 on Blue Canoe Records. In addition to Bob the band features saxophonist Doug Payne\, guitarist Ryan Kennedy\, John Inghram on bass\, and Tim Courts on drums. \n“This is my musical family\, we all live in Charleston and have been playing together for a long time. We are trying to play music that makes people feel good. We want to spread a little love during these troubled times. Making this record was a lot of fun. It was also great to reunite with my friend\, and producer during my years with Ichiban\, Buzz Amato.” \nAfter hearing Thompson live or on any of his numerous recordings — you might be surprised to learn how hard Thompson tried to avoid the keyboard as a kid. Although there was always a piano in his home in Jamaica\, New York\, Bob had little interest in learning how to play it. \n“When I was in junior high school\, I had a piano teacher who came to my house to give me lessons. He thought I had some talent. So one summer\, he told my mom he’d teach me for free\, Thompson recalls. “I said I wasn’t interested. I didn’t want to spend the summer taking piano lessons.” Instead\, Thompson picked up the trumpet\, playing in various school bands. And when he arrived on the campus of West Virginia State College\, he wanted to join the student jazz band. Only one problem: they already had a fine trumpet player. \n“He was great\, and the trumpet spot was closed.  So I started playing piano\, just so I could be in the band and learn about the music from him\,” Thompson says. It was a switch that stuck. And Thompson left the trumpet behind to hone his keyboard skills. \nWhile a student at West Virginia State College\, Thompson formed the modern jazz interpreters\, a piano trio who appeared at the Notre Dame Jazz Festival in 1964. Shortly thereafter\, Thompson received a valuable lesson from another performer\, Chicago saxophonist Bunky Green\, who joined the band on a State Department tour to Algiers. \n“He’s the person that really inspired me to spend my life playing music\,” Thompson says. “He used to tell me\, ‘When you sit down to your instrument\, play as though it might be the last time.” ‘so don’t fool around\, don’t jive. Go ahead and say what you’ve got to say’.” \nThat’s advice which Thompson has followed throughout his professional career\, which began with the jazz interpreters\, and then later on his own in the 1970s. Through the 80s\, Thompson released a series of widely acclaimed solo albums\, recording first for his own Rainbow Records and then on Capitol’s Intima jazz label. \n“Violinist John Blake encouraged me to record my own compositions. He was a big inspiration.” Blake produced the recordings “7 in 7 out” and “brother’s keeper” with guests like bassist Gerald Veasley\, guitarist Kevin Eubanks\, and drummer Omar Hakim. Hakim also produced Thompson’s 1986 album “say what you want.” The albums are tasteful\, thoughtful\, contemporary jazz. These recordings garnered strong airplay on radio stations nationwide. \nMeanwhile\, Thompson moved to Atlanta-based Ichiban international records to release the albums Love Dance (1992)\, The Magic in Your Heart (1993)\, Ev’ry Time I Feel the Spirit (1996) and Lady First. Ev’ry Time I Feel the Spirit\, which is a collection of spirituals performed in Thompson’s unique contemporary jazz style\, was re-released in 2003 on DM Records. \nBob Thompson has had a long relationship with Mountain Stage\, an eclectic\, Charleston-based weekly music broadcast on national public radio that’s featured everyone from R.E.M. to K.D. Lang\, the Neville Brothers\, and Joshua Redman. Having been a frequent guest on the show since its inception in 1983\, Bob was always a big Mountain Stage fan. In 1991 he was invited to become a regularly featured performer on the show\, and pianist in the house band. “I’ve just fallen in love with Mountain Stage\,” says Thompson\, “it’s also gotten my music out to a more diverse audience.” \nIn between concerts and festival gigs\, Thompson can still be found playing clubs in Charleston — something he says keeps him close to his musical roots. \n“When I’m on a big stage\, I just treat it like I’m in a bar somewhere\,” he says. “The kind of connection with the audience I like happens a lot when we’re playing in a small club\, and that carries over when we get into a larger venue.” \nMusic education is also very important to Thompson. He continues teaching a few private students and doing occasional workshops at colleges and public schools. “I love teaching because it gives me an opportunity to pass along the help that so many have given me along the way. I am always thankful for this opportunity to do something in life that I truly love.” \nAbout Jess Baldwin \n \nJess Baldwin’s voice has been described as “world class\,” “effortless\,” and “pure beauty.” She performed on Mountain Stage in 2013 with John A. Walsh’s The Fields of Gettysburg\, won Best Cover Song in the 2015 Ohio Music Awards\, and was a quarterfinalist in the 2015 American Traditions Competition. She brings souvenirs from diverse vocal worlds into her jazz quintet. Among cover songs by modern artists like Alan Hampton\, the Portico Quartet\, and Esperanza Spalding\, she peppers her own playful\, yet contemplative jazz arrangements of pop-rock artists like Björk and Weezer\, country artists like Gillian Welch\, and classical composers like Barber and Bach. She is joined by an all-star cast of regional musicians: guitarist Ryan Kennedy\, pianist Sean Parsons\, bassist Andy McVey\, and drummer Andy Hall.

While we anticipated people would be excited to see it open and to have theatre like this in Marietta and the Mid Ohio Valley once again\, your support and enthusiasm has far exceeded our expectations. We want to thank you with an invitation to join us for a FREE performance by four-time Grammy Award winner Ladysmith Black Mambazo on July 17 as we kick off the second half of our Spotlight Series. All you have to do is RSVP via our website or the box office (740-371-5152). \nPeoples Bank Theatre presents international music sensation Ladysmith Black Mambazo live in concert. In 2014 Ladysmith Black Mambazo\, the South African a cappella group formed by Joseph Shabalala during the 1960’s\, was awarded their fourth Grammy Award for the CD Singing For Peace Around The World.  Not just a CD title but a statement of the group’s career mission. It was Nelson Mandela who designated Ladysmith Black Mambazo “South Africa’s Cultural  Ambassadors to the world.” It’s a title Ladysmith Black Mambazo holds quite dearly to their hearts. Nelson Mandela passed away just over a year ago and the group dedicated the Grammy Award to him. They have been celebrating Mandela’s message of peace at every concert they perform. \nLadysmith Black Mambazo returns to the USA in 2016 for their annual celebration of South African culture and history. In each concert they sing songs of Peace\, Love & Harmony to the world as they have since their very beginnings. \nLadysmith Black Mambazo was founded in the early 1960s by Joseph Shabalala\, then a young farm boy turned factory worker. Ladysmith is the name of Joseph’s hometown\, a small farming area between Durban and Johannesburg; Black being a reference to the oxen\, the strongest of all farm animals; and Mambazo\, the Zulu word for chopping axe\, a symbol of the group’s ability to “chop down” any singing rival who might challenge them. Their ability won so many awards that by the end of the 1960’s they were banned from competitions\, although they were welcomed to participate as entertainers. \nA radio broadcast in 1970 opened the door to their first record contract – the beginning of an ambitious discography that currently includes more than fifty recordings\, fifteen Grammy Award nominations and those four Grammy Award statues. They are currently recording a follow up CD to the recent Grammy winner\, titled Songs of Peace & Love for Kids & Parents Around The World. It is very important to the group that their message of peace be passed from generation to generation. By recording songs of peace that parents can teach their children\, the group hopes to continue the message for decades to come. Their philosophy in the studio is as much about preservation of musical heritage as it is about entertainment. \nApartheid\, the South African social system forced upon the country’s black majority to keep the white minority government in power\, was a dividing force in many ways. The musicians and artists of South Africa took two paths of resistance. Some sang songs with powerful messages of revolution against the horrors of apartheid. Others\, like Ladysmith Black Mambazo\, followed a path of peaceful protest. Joseph Shabalala\, following the ways of protest that Martin Luther King Jr used in the USA\, wrote songs of hope and a better tomorrow. When Nelson Mandela was released from prison\, in 1990\, he named Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s singing as one of the powerful messages of peace he listened to while in jail. In fact\, when Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 he brought Ladysmith Black Mambazo with him to Oslo Norway to receive his award. \nThe group sings from a traditional music called isicathamiya (is-cot-a-ME-Ya)\, which developed in the mines of South Africa\, where black workers were taken by rail to work far away from their homes and their families. Poorly housed and paid worse\, the mine workers would entertain themselves after a six-day week by singing songs into the wee hours on Sunday morning. When the miners returned to the homelands\, this musical tradition returned with them. \nDuring the 1970’s Ladysmith Black Mambazo established themselves as the most successful singing group in South Africa. In the mid-1980s\, Paul Simon visited South Africa and incorporated the group’s rich tenor/alto/bass harmonies into his famous Graceland album – a landmark recording that was considered seminal in introducing world music to mainstream audiences. \nIn addition to their work with Paul Simon\, Ladysmith Black Mambazo has recorded with numerous artists\, including Stevie Wonder\, Dolly Parton\, Sarah McLachlan\, Josh Groban\, Emmylou Harris\, Melissa Etheridge\, and many others. They have provided film soundtrack singing for Disney’s The Lion King\, Part II as well as Eddie Murphy’s Coming To America\, Marlon Brando’s A Dry White Season\, James Earl Jones’ Cry The Beloved Country and Clint Eastwood’s Invictus. A film documentary titled On Tip Toe: Gentle Steps to Freedom\, the Story of Ladysmith Black Mambazo\, was nominated for an Academy Award. They have even appeared on Broadway where they were nominated for a Tony Award. \nLadysmith Black Mambazo carries a message of Peace\, Love and Harmony as they travel the world year after year. They bring this message\, in song and dance\, to every theater they perform in. We hope you will join them as they sing their message.

DESCRIPTION:…A legend lives on! \nPresented with support from Morrison Incorporated. \nThe legendary Glenn Miller was one of the most successful of all dance bandleaders back in the Swing Era of the 1930s and 40s. A matchless string of hit records\, the constant impact of radio broadcasts\, and the drawing power of concerts at theatres\, hotels and dance pavilions\, built and sustained the momentum of popularity. \nGlenn disbanded his musical organization in 1942\, at the height of its popularity\, to volunteer for the Army. There\, he organized and led the famous Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band. It went to Europe to give concerts for servicemen\, performing numerous live and radio shows. On December 15\, 1944\, Major Miller took off in a single engine plane from Europe to precede his band to France\, disappearing over the English Channel\, never to be seen again. The army declared him officially dead a year later. \nWith the release of the major motion movie The Glenn Miller Story featuring Jimmy Stewart and June Allyson in 1954\, interest and popular demand led the Miller Estate to authorize the formation of the present Glenn Miller Orchestra. On June 6\, 1956—under the direction of drummer Ray McKinley\, who had become the unofficial leader of the Army Air Force Band after Glenn’s disappearance—the reformed Glenn Miller Orchestra performed its first concert and has been on the road ever since. Other leaders have followed Ray\, including clarinetists Buddy DeFranco and Peanuts Hucko\, trombonists Buddy Morrow\, Jimmy Henderson\, Larry O’Brien\, and Gary Tole\, and tenor saxophonist Dick Gerhart. Since January 2012\, vocalist Nick Hilscher leads the band. \nToday\, the 18 member ensemble continues to play many of the original Miller arrangements both from the civilian band and the AAFB libraries. Additionally\, it also plays some more modern selections arranged and performed in the Miller style and sound. \nJust as it was in Glenn’s day\, the Glenn Miller Orchestra today is still the most sought after big band in the world.

DESCRIPTION:Performances at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.\nClick “Buy Tickets” link to select tickets to either show. \n \nThe Ballet Follkorico was created to preserve Mexican folk dances and to provide others with the opportunity to appreciate diversity among cultures. The full name of the folk dance company is the Ballet Folklórico Mexico de Los Hermanos Avila. Carmen and Jesus Avila (sister and brother) who are still performing today founded the company in 1972. They were subsequently joined by a second and third generation of Avilas. \nJesus Avila serves as the company’s director\, while Armando Contreras is the choreographer\, costume designer\, and artistic director. The lavish and colorful authentic regalia are an integral part of the show and transition the energetic dancers from one scene to the next. The majestic costumes are symbolic of Mexican culture and are adorned with beads\, suede\, and colorful pheasant tails\, some of which reach six and a half feet in length. \nThe Ballet Folklórico Mexico has been recognized by U.S. and Mexican officials as one of the most outstanding groups presenting the authentic regional dances of Mexico. The group has received proclamations and commendations from the State of Wisconsin\, as well as from the Mexican Government Tourism Office. The dancers consider themselves multicultural ambassadors from around the world. Many of the dancers are college students coming from Mexico\, Puerto Rico and from as far as Japan and China. Based in Madison\, Wisconsin\, the group has performed all over the world\, including in Germany\, Russia\, and Mexico. The dancers rigorously practice four to five days a week to maintain the precision and integrity of their dances. \nThe program includes historic dances from Azteca\, Michoacan\, Guerrero\, Sonora\, Jalisco\, and other regions of Mexico\, as well as dances dedicated to the “soldaderas\,” the courageous women who supported and even fought alongside the men during the Mexican revolution. \nThe regional dances reflect the unique tradition of a country where many groups were physically isolated form one another\, yet shared a common language and spirit.

DESCRIPTION:Peoples Bank Theatre presents The Johny Clegg Band live in concert. Johnny Clegg is one of South Africa’s most celebrated sons. He is a singer\, a songwriter\, a dancer\, anthropologist and a musical activist whose infectious crossover music\, a vibrant blend of Western pop and African Zulu rhythms\, has exploded onto the international scene and broken through all the barriers in his own country. In France\, where he enjoys a massive following\, he is fondly called Le Zulu Blanc – the white Zulu. \nOver three decades\, Johnny Clegg has sold over five million albums of his brand of crossover music worldwide. He has wowed vast audiences with his audacious live shows and won a number of national and international awards for his music and for his outspoken views on apartheid\, his perspectives on migrant workers in South Africa and the general situation in the world today. Johnny Clegg’s history is as bold\, colorful\, and dashing as the rainbow country which he has called home for more than 40 years. \n \nJohnny Clegg was born in Bacup\, near Rochdale\, England\, in 1953\, but was brought up in Zimbabwe and South Africa. Between his mother (a cabaret and jazz singer) and his step-father (a crime reporter who took him into the townships at an early age)\, Johnny was exposed to a broader cultural perspective than that available to his peers. \nWhilst lecturing Anthropology at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg\, Clegg worked on the concept of blending English lyrics and Western melodies with Zulu musical structures alongside his songwriting and performance partner\, Sipho Mchunu. This blend was recognized by South African producer\, Hilton Rosenthal\, who became the champion of the project and who continues to promote Johnny Clegg’s work today. \nClegg and Mchunu called their band\, JULUKA\, which means “sweat” in Zulu. Their music was subjected to censorship and internal restrictions on the state-owned radio and their only way to access an audience was through touring. They played concerts at universities\, church halls\, and migrant labor hostels and in the living rooms of private houses because the law forbade mixed race performances in public venues and spaces. Juluka was most fruitful during 1982 and 1983 with tours of the USA\, Canada\, Germany and Scandinavia. In the six years that they were together\, the band recorded two platinum and five gold albums and became an international success. Juluka split up in 1985 when Mchunu returned to his roots as a cattle farmer in Zululand. \nDuring this time\, Clegg formed another crossover band\, SAVUKA (which means “we have risen”). His concept was to mix African music with a wider music base and international rock sounds. Savuka’s first album (Third World Child\, 1987) broke all international sales records in France\, Switzerland and Belgium in 1988. They went on to record four additional albums and tour extensively in Europe and North America\, breaking all attendance records in France in 1988 and 1989. \nFollowing a brief reunion in 1997 with his lifelong friend\, Mchunu\, during which Juluka released one final album\, Ya Vuka Inkunzi\, Clegg recorded a number of solo projects. Since 2004\, he has toured Europe and North America extensively with his band\, playing concerts to capacity houses and appearing at several world-famous events including the Montreal International Jazz Festival\, the Tribeca Film Festival in New York\, New Orleans Jazzfest\, Festival de Cornauille –France\, Festineuch in Switzerland\, Musique Métisses at Angouleme (France’s premier World Music festival)\, Live at Sunset (Zuric)\, Fête de l’humanité in Paris\, and Quebec Summer Festival (Festival d’eté de Québec).
