The New Yorker praises its “off-the-charts energy\,” while The New York Times declares\, “Clearly\, the future is theirs.” \nEvents in the series have been funded by the Frederica G. Esbenshade Memorial Fund\, which provides annual income for the purpose of bringing lectures\, performing artists\, and programs of a diverse nature to the campus and community at large. The endowed fund was established in 1980 by Harry H Esbenshade Sr.\, and Harry H. Esbenshade Jr.\, husband and son\, respectively\, of the late Mrs. Esbenshade of Uniontown\, Pa. All events are free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:More than thirty-five years after Travis Tritt launched his music career\, the Southern rock-influenced artist continues to sell-out shows and stay true and relevant to country music fans across the globe.  Continuously performing shows and withholding a heavy appearance schedule\, Tritt is proving to be unstoppable. \nThe highly abbreviated Tritt timeline started when the young Marietta\, Georgia native incorporated his lifelong influences of Southern rock\, blues and gospel into his country during a honky-tonk apprenticeship that led him to Warner Bros. in 1989.  Over the course of a decade\, Travis released seven studio albums and a greatest hits package for the label.  His 1990 debut Country Club and its succession of hits put him in the vanguard of the genre’s early ’90s boom\, dubbing him as one of “The Class of ‘89\,” which included country music superstars Garth Brooks\, Clint Black and Alan Jackson; all whom dominated the charts in the early ‘90s. \n“Country Club\,” “Help Me Hold On\,” “I’m Gonna Be Somebody\,” and “Drift Off to Dream” peaked at numbers two and three on the Hot Country Singles & Tracks charts; all which led for Tritt to win Top New Male Artist award from Billboard and the CMA Horizon Award (now known as the Best New Artist Award). Additionally\, in 1991\, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) marked Tritt’s debut album Country Club as certified platinum\, then in 1992\, the world-famous Grand Ole Opry extended an invitation for Tritt to become a member. \nTwo years after his debut\, Travis’ sophomore album\, It’s All About to Change\, was released. Literally speaking\, this album changed everything when the album shipped three million copies and all four of its singles reached the top five on the country music charts. Along with his first album\, this release became triple-platinum certified by the RIAA.  \n The next series of albums\, seven of which are certified platinum or higher\, scored him more hit singles and led him to amass more than 30 million in career album sales\, two Grammys\, three CMA Awards and a devoted fan base that has filled venues coast-to-coast.  \nHe’s been a force in sports appearances\, having performed at the 1996 Olympics\, two Super Bowls\, a World Series Game\, the opening of the Georgia Dome\, the final Braves game at Atlanta-Fulton Country Stadium and\, in 2013\, the NCAA men’s basketball championship. \nIn 2012\, Tritt formed his own label\, Post Oak Recordings and shortly after released his album\, The Calm After... In 2016\, Tritt released a new project\, a special live 2-disc CD and DVD\, titled A Man and His Guitar – Live From The Franklin Theatre. The release shot and recorded at the historic Franklin Theatre in Franklin\, Tenn.\, spotlights Tritt’s distinctively soulful voice and his exceptional guitar prowess in an intimate theater setting.   \nIn late 2014 and throughout 2015\, Tritt’s compilation album\, Very Best of Travis Tritt\, that was originally released in 2007\, saw a sales resurgence as it topped the SoundScan Top 200 Catalog Country Albums chart for over 60 consecutive weeks with 15 weeks spent at No. 1 and 35+ weeks notched in a Top 5 position\, while earning RIAA certified gold status by selling over 500\,000 copies. DESCRIPTION:A Country Music Hall of Famer\, five-time Grammy Award-winner\, and AMA Lifetime Achievement honoree\, Stuart knows a thing or two about standing the test of time. Born and raised in Philadelphia\, Mississippi\, he landed his first big gig in Lester Flatts’ band at the tender age of thirteen\, and by twenty-one\, he was working on the road and in the studio with Johnny Cash. Though Stuart built his early reputation backing up country and bluegrass royalty\, it wasn’t long before Nashville recognized him as a star in his own right\, and over the course of forty-plus years as a solo artist\, he would go on to release more than twenty major label albums\, scoring platinum sales\, hit singles\, and just about every honor the industry could bestow along the way. \n“If country music had a president\, it would be Marty Stuart\,” famed documentarian Ken Burns once proclaimed. “He is the embodiment of the culture.” \nStuart emerged as an unofficial caretaker of the culture\, too\, spending much of his career rescuing and collecting country music artifacts from throughout the genre’s history. The first piece he picked up? Patsy Cline’s makeup kit\, which he bought from a junk shop for $75. These days\, Stuart\, who Rolling Stone calls “one of the world’s foremost country experts and archivists\,” has roughly 20\,000 pieces in his collection\, including a handwritten copy of Hank Williams’ “I Saw The Light” and Johnny Cash’s first black performance suit. While select items have been exhibited everywhere from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to the Louvre\, Stuart is hard at work building a dedicated arts and cultural center to preserve and display it all in his hometown of Philadelphia. \n“I’m calling it The Congress of Country Music\, and I want it to serve as an inspirational spot\,” says Stuart\, who’s raised funds for the center with annual late night jams at the Ryman featuring everyone from Emmylou Harris and Sheryl Crow to Tyler Childers and Billy Strings. “I want it to be a touchstone where younger generations can learn about this stuff and figure out who they are and embark on their own musical journeys.” \nIt’s that last part that particularly excites Stuart\, whose musical journey came full circle on Altitude. Written primarily on the road\, the collection was inspired in large part by Stuart’s 2018 tour supporting Byrds co-founders Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman\, who reunited for the 50th anniversary of their seminal Sweetheart Of The Rodeo album. \n“I bought my first copy of Sweetheart Of The Rodeo for $2.99 at the discount bin in a shopping mall record store in Goodlettsville\, Tennessee\, and it became the blueprint for my musical life\,” Stuart recalls. “Revisiting it on the road with Roger and Chris put me back under its spell all over again. I was writing songs in dressing rooms and soundchecks and on the bus\, and then one day\, I looked up and there was enough to make an album.” \nStuart and his band spent much of 2019 breaking in the new material live\, and by 2020\, they were raring to get into the studio. COVID\, however\, had other plans. Not wanting to lose any momentum\, Stuart moved the sessions from the temporarily shuttered Capitol Studios in Hollywood\, CA to East Iris Studios in Nashville\, TN\, where he and his bandmates were still able to perform live on the floor (albeit masked and six feet apart). \n“We knew if we didn’t find a way to make the record in that moment\, we might never recapture the same circle of fire around the songs we had going for us\,” Stuart explains. “If we waited for COVID to pass\, the album might very well have passed us by\, too.” \nThe electricity in the room is palpable on Altitude\, which opens with the blistering and trippy “Lost Byrd Space Train (Scene 1).” Played on Byrds guitarist Clarence White’s original B-Bender Telecaster (another prized possession in Stuart’s collection)\, the instrumental track chugs along at a breakneck pace\, flirting with country\, bluegrass\, and even psychedelic rock as it sets the stage for the wide-ranging sonic journey to come. Stuart keeps the energy high here—the scorching “Country Star” squeezes a lifetime’s worth of absurdist imagery into a three-minute tour-de-force\, while the ecstatic “Time To Dance” is a slice of pure honky-tonk joy\, and the rousing “Friend Of Mine” even offers hints of Link Wray and The Ventures—but he never loses sight of the emotional core of the music\, even amidst all of the instrumental fireworks. The ringing 12-string and bittersweet harmonies of “Sitting Alone\,” for instance\, only serve to heighten the song’s sense of distance and isolation; the hypnotic sitar line on “Space” amplifies the uneasiness and longing that simmers just beneath the surface; and the spare acoustic delivery of “The Angels Came Down” underscores the raw vulnerability in Stuart’s deeply autobiographical lyrics. \n“‘The Angels Came Down’ is probably the most truthful song on the record\,” Stuart reflects. “There have been times in my life when I’ve felt like a lost and wandering soul\, just chasing all the wrong things. Some people lose their lives to that\, but sometimes the angels offer you a hand up out of the darkness.” \nIt’s that big picture perspective that guides Stuart on the album’s old-school\, shuffling title track\, which takes a bird’s eye view of what really matters most in this life. “To get to go and stay\, must give all your love away\,” Stuart sings over what turned out to be one of the final performances from late piano legend Pig Robbins. \n“I like to say that the most outlaw thing you can possibly do in Nashville right now is play country music\,” Stuart says with a laugh. “This album is a reminder to me\, and to anyone else out there who’s interested\, that there’s still a few of us left who know how to do it. This is a wonderful opportunity to introduce children to the performing arts through a full theatre experience\, from auditions and rehearsals to a live performance on the Peoples Bank Theatre stage. \nChildren entering 1st through 12th grade are encouraged to audition. It is free for children to audition and participate in this camp. \nAuditions will be held for the Missoula Children’s Theatre production of Rapunzel from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Monday\, July 6\, at Peoples Bank Theatre\, located at 222 Putnam Street in Marietta\, Ohio. Those auditioning should arrive at 10:00 a.m. and plan to stay for the full two-hour audition. Most of the students selected for the cast will be asked to stay for a rehearsal immediately following the audition. \nApproximately 50 to 60 roles are available for local students. All students entering 1st through 12th grade are encouraged to audition. No advance preparation is necessary. \nMost students will rehearse approximately 4 hours and 15 minutes each day\, from Monday\, July 6 through Friday\, July 10. But the songs on Midnight Gasoline have a deeper resonance because they are interpreted by a man who is older and wiser\, and he pours that experience into every note. \nFor instance\, “Sober\,” which he wrote with James Slater\, describes the difficulty of remaining sober\, especially in a city and industry that glorify drinking. The song’s lyrics\, according to American Songwriter\, are “heartbreaking in their simplicity.” \n“It’s for people who know the struggle\,” says Johnson\, who also co-wrote 2009’s “High Cost of Living” with Slater. Music Row’s Robert K. Oermann says\, “Johnson remains one of our most towering country vocalists\, and this spare\, stripped-down track lets him emote magnificently on the ballad… The whole performance rings with honesty and truth.” As Saving Country Music says\, “Whether you’re clean or not\, ‘Sober’ is the Jamey Johnson song you’ve waited 15 years for.” \nMidnight Gasoline is a tribute to collaboration and a testament to the importance of Johnson’s friends. In an industry known for self-promotion\, Johnson is dedicated to building and supporting a musical community that benefits and celebrates all. He is quick to share credit with those around him. The album’s first half was produced by The Kent Hardly Playboys—Wayd Battle\, Jim “Moose” Brown\, Tom Bukovac\, T.W. These are the kinds of friends who don’t fade with time\,” he says. “It just gets stronger.” \nHe co-wrote “What a View” with Davidson\, Houser and Hatch in the Bahamas during a writing session that sparked a new burst of creativity for Johnson. \n“‘What a View’ was the first of these songs that came straight from me and from a very personal place.
