DESCRIPTION:For nearly six decades\, the three-time GRAMMY® Award-winning Nitty Gritty Dirt Band has entertained audiences with their top-shelf musicianship and timeless hits. Now the time has come for the band who has carried a torch for American country and roots music to say so long to the highways and byways they’ve crossed an unimaginable number of times throughout their career. On March 21st\, 2024\, the Dirt Band will kick off the first leg of their last traditionally scheduled gigs\, ALL THE GOOD TIMES: The Farewell Tour. \nThis isn’t goodbye forever\, but it will be the last fans see of multi-city runs and long bus rides. These special shows will celebrate the music created by the legendary\, yet ever-evolving NGDB. Many veteran bands trade on nostalgia\, on replication of past glories\, and on recycled emotions from younger\, more carefree days. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band trades on a mix of reimagined classics and compelling newer works. The group formed in 1966 as a Long Beach\, California jug band\, scored its first charting single in 1967\, and embarked on a selfpropelled ride through folk\, country\, rock ‘n’ roll\, pop\, blue- grass\, and the amalgam now known as “Americana.” \nThe first major hit came in 1971 with the epic “Mr. Bojangles\,” which\, along with insistent support from banjo master Earl Scruggs\, opened doors in Nashville. Behind those doors were Earl Scruggs\, Roy Acuff\, Doc Watson\, Mother Maybelle Carter\, Jimmy Martin\, and others who would collaborate on a multi-artist\, multi-generational\, three-disc 1972 masterpiece: Will the Circle Be Unbroken went triple Platinum\, spawned two later volumes\, and wound up in the Grammy Hall of Fame. \nWas this a cutting-edge combo or a group of revivalists? Was the goal rebellion or musical piety? Yes\, to all these things. In the 1980s\, the Dirt Band reeled off 15 straight Top 10 country hits\, including chart-toppers “Long Hard Road (The Sharecropper’s Dream)\,” “Modern Day Romance\,” and “Fishin’ in the Dark” (co-written by Jim Photoglo\, who would join the band in the second decade of the new century). \n1989 brought a second Circle album\, this one featuring singer-songwriter talents including John Prine\, Rosanne Cash\, and John Hiatt and garnering two Grammy awards for the band (it later won another\, for a collaboration with Earl Scruggs and other fine folks). Circle II also won the Country Music Association’s Album of the Year prize. Circle III was released in 2003\, featuring collaborations with Johnny Cash\, Dwight Yoakam\, Emmylou Harris\, Taj Mahal\, and more. \nThroughout the group’s lifetime\, personnel has changed\, with each change resulting in positive steps forward\, new ways of playing the old songs\, and renewed enthusiasm for writing and recording fresh material. The latest Dirt Band lineup is expanded to six members for the first time since 1968. Today’s group consists of founding member Jeff Hanna\, harp master Jimmie Fadden (who joined in 1966)\, and soulful-voiced Bob Carpenter\, who has more than 40 years of service in the ensemble. Those veterans are now joined by singer-songwriter-bass man Jim Photoglo\, fiddle and mandolin wizard Ross Holmes\, and Hanna’s son\, the preternaturally talented singer and guitarist Jaime Hanna. \nBlood harmony\, thrilling instrumental flights\, undeniable stage chemistry…these things are part of each Dirt Band show\, just as they are part of Dirt Does Dylan\, the first recording from the reconfigured\, six-strong group released in 2022. Produced by Ray Kennedy and Jeff Hanna\, it’s a remarkable ride through some of the most impactful songs of the past century\, penned by Bob Dylan and taken for a blue highway spin by a great American band\, with help from genius-level contemporary artists like Jason Isbell and The War and Treaty. A Dirt Band show is unlike any other. What am I doing still here?’ I look at the flight that we took off in\,” referring to his fellow newcomers at the time of his career launch. “A lot of them are gone\, it seems. Some quit by choice. DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Esbenshade Series of Marietta College\n“Music to Love” with pianist Barbara Nissman is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.\, Thursday\, March 14\, at Peoples Bank Theatre as part of Marietta College’s Esbenshade Series. Tickets for Nissman’s performance can be reserved starting at 10:00 a.m.\, Monday\, February 26. This will be an evening of great music and an informal chat as Nissman shares the music and stories of some of her favorite composers. \nHailed as “one of the last pianists in the grand Romantic tradition of Liszt\, Rachmaninoff\, and Rubinstein\,” Nissman continues the grand bravura tradition of romantic pianism. Recognized as an authority on the music of Franz Liszt\, her 2 DVD set\, Franz Liszt: Portrait of the Man & his Masterwork- The Sonata in B minor with Michael York as the voice of Liszt and a stellar cast of his contemporaries has recently been released. Her recordings of Prokofiev\, Bartók\, and Ginastera are considered “definitive\,” and she has garnered praise for her series of recordings of nineteenth-century composers: Beethoven\, Chopin\, Liszt\, Schumann\, Brahms\, and also Rachmaninoff. All these recordings are now available on Nissman’s new label\, Three Oranges Recordings. \nNissman’s international career was personally launched by Eugene Ormandy\, who had previously engaged her as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra. She has performed with the leading orchestras of Europe and America. She has also worked with some of the major conductors of our time\, including Ormandy\, Riccardo Muti\, Stanislaw Skrowaczewski\, and Leonard Slatkin. Nissman was inducted into the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame’s class of 2023. \nThe series\, funded by the Frederica G. Esbenshade Memorial Fund\, will once again feature five performances and all will be free of charge to the public.

It was a\nwarm summer afternoon. It started as a quiet melody on ukulele and nylon string guitar\, but when we got to the\nstudio it became something much more powerful. It’s a song about the times when the parts of ourselves that we\ntry to keep hidden rise to the surface and we have no choice but to ride the wave. Sometimes that means doing\nyour own thing to figure it out so you can emerge stronger on the other side. It’s not about the end of a relationship\,\nbut rather a moment of self reflection and a promise to keep showing up even when things get tough. Once Daniel\nplayed the opening riff on piano I knew it had to open the album. I’m always seeking to push myself into new sonic\nterritory\, and this song gave me permission to not hold back.\nThe seventh album from Sarah Jarosz finds the highly decorated songwriter at the apex of change. A Texas native\,\nshe’s spent most of her adult life living in New York City\, but shortly before writing the album Jarosz left her adopted\nhome to join her soon-to-be husband in Nashville\, TN. The geographic shake-up led to a sonic one as well for\nPolaroid Lovers. Along with layering in such\ndelicately crafted details as otherworldly textures and luminous synth tones\, Jarosz and Tashian forged the album’s\nsingular sound by foregrounding her spirited performance on octave mandolin. “Out of everything I play\, the octave\nmandolin is definitely my soulmate\,” says Jarosz\, who first took up mandolin at age nine\, quickly gained major\nacclaim in the bluegrass world\, and also plays guitar and banjo throughout Polaroid Lovers. “I started playing it when\nI was 16\, and that’s when I started writing songs that truly felt like me — there’s something about the tonality that\nreally lets my voice shine through.”\nWith her co-writers on Polaroid Lovers also including artists like Ruston Kelly\, Natalie Hemby\, and Sarah Buxton as\nwell as heavy-hitters like Jon Randall (Miranda Lambert\, Emmylou Harris) and Gordie Sampson (Willie Nelson\, Trisha\nYearwood)\, Jarosz opens the album on “Jealous Moon”: a gloriously soaring and exquisitely nuanced track that\ninstantly sweeps the listener up in its bristling emotionality. “That song is about the parts of ourselves that we try to\nkeep hidden\, and the moments when they rise to the surface and we just have to ride the wave\,” says Jarosz\, who\nco-wrote “Jealous Moon” with Tashian on a trip to his family’s summer house in Monteagle\, Tennessee. “Daniel and\nI call it our little Monteagle song that could — it started off with me playing ukulele and him playing nylon-string\nguitar on the porch\, then blossomed into this very powerful song that knocked me off my feet.”\nNext\, on “When the Lights Go Out\,” Jarosz shares the sweetly lilting reverie that gave the album its title (from the\nfirst verse: “In a dream we were Polaroid lovers/In the deep where the edges don’t lie”). “I wrote that song with Jon\nRandall and Gordie Sampson\, who suggested we try something in a 6/8 time signature — which is such a simple\nidea\, but took us in a direction I might never have gone otherwise\,” she says. “To me the lyrics are a way of asking\nsomeone you’re intrigued by\, ‘Who are you when all the shine and attention isn’t on you anymore? Who are you\nreally?'” Another track co-written with Randall\, “Runaway Train” kicks the album into high gear as Jarosz serves up a\nbright and soulful love song built on a wildly sing-along-ready chorus (“You’ve got a heart like a runaway\ntrain/Screaming down the mountainside/Burning like a fever that you can’t contain/Humming like the 405”).\n“Coming out of the pandemic and playing shows again\, I realized that a lot of the more uptempo songs in my set\nwere covers\,” she says. “I wanted to write a love song that would give people that joyful feeling\, and Jon and I had\nso much fun playing with all those images of California and Colorado and Texas Hill Country\, which is where I grew\nup.”\nOne of the most poignant moments on Polaroid Lovers\, “Columbus & 89th” drifts into a dreamlike beauty as Jarosz\nreflects on the ineffable heartache of leaving her longtime home of New York City back in 2020. “New York signified\nthis childhood dream that I’d had for so long\, so moving to Nashville was like turning the page from youth to\nadulthood\,” she says. “‘Columbus & 89th’ ended up just pouring out of me once Daniel and I started working on it —\nthere was so much nostalgia and melancholy that I needed to process\, and now I still tear up whenever I hear it. As a\nsongwriter my main goal is to tell the truth about my experience\, and I think the fact that that song makes me so\nemotional means that I was tapping into real feeling.” Written on the same trip that yielded “Columbus & 89th” (a\njourney to Alabama’s Orange Beach with Tashian’s family)\, “Days Can Turn Around” unfolds as a gently swaying folk\nsong threaded with warmly delivered instruction for living well no matter what the circumstances (e.g.\, “Never turn\ndown cold champagne/Don’t change your plans for a little rain”). “Both of those songs have similar themes of\nthinking back and looking forward\, but trying your best to be in the moment\,” says Jarosz. “With ‘Days Can Turn\nAround\,’ I wanted to talk about all those little gems of wisdom you hear from you parents that end up taking on a\nwhole new meaning when you finally become an adult.”\nAs Jarosz reveals\, her very first co-writing session with Tashian helped draw out the deep-rooted confidence that\ninformed all of the album’s creation. “That first day Daniel and I worked together we wrote a song called ‘Take the\nHigh Road\,’ which is about taking the time to really know yourself and get comfortable in your own skin\, even if it\nmight take a little longer to get to where you want to be\,” she says. “There was something so beautiful about that\nbeing the first song we wrote for this album — it gave me the push I needed to not be afraid\, to move beyond the\nboundaries and explore new sounds.” A widely beloved musician whose past efforts include teaming up with fellow\nsinger/songwriters Sara Watkins and Aoife O’Donovan to form the Grammy Award-winning trio I’m With Her — as\nwell as appearing on albums by iconic artists like David Crosby and Amy Ray of Indigo Girls — Jarosz derived a\nparticularly profound sense of purpose from the highly collaborative process behind Polaroid Lovers. “Maybe more\nthan any record I’ve ever made\, I felt so present and hyper-emotional with this album because I believed in it so\nmuch\,” she says. “It was so joyful to work with all these writers and musicians\, and I think that joy really comes\nthrough.”\nLooking back on the making of Polaroid Lovers\, Jarosz notes that shaking up her process ultimately left her eager to\nfurther expand her creative horizons. “It was a big step for me to reach out to Daniel\, but in the end it showed me\nhow important it is to keep taking thoughtful chances\,” she says. “This whole album reminded me that I never want\nto play it safe — if anything\, I want there to always be that element of being a little scared\, because that means I’m\ntaking a risk. In a way that’s what’s so wonderful about art: if you’re lucky\, you never reach the finish line. You just\nkeep searching and chiseling away at the stone\, and putting everything you can into making something that tells the\ntruth but hopefully leaves space for others to find meaning too.” \n  \nThe Ballroom Thieves \nEarly in 2020\, an article was released declaring that the music industry needed more happy songs. As Martin\nEarley and Calin Peters recall\, they laughed while reading it\, knowing that their work as The Ballroom Thieves\nexplores the spirit of that paradigm. Well\, sort of…they’re not interested in easily defined worldviews.\n“We read that article and thought\, ‘how are we supposed to write happy songs right now?'” says Earley. “We\ndon’t write happy songs\, but this time we decided to try something new by pairing optimistic sounding music with\ndark lyrics. If the listener is not a lyrics person\, they might not notice.”\nThe Ballroom Thieves’ fourth album\, Clouds\, is a song cycle born of mixed experiences and fueled by the power\nof imagination. The album is a lush meditation on longing to return to touring – to see different sunsets and cities.\nBut\, it’s also a reflection of its difficulties\, e.g.\, insomnia brought on by sleeping in different hotel rooms every\nnight. After a major car accident and the departure of a band member\, the duo has taken the duality of all these\nexperiences and translated them into song.\n“We miss exploring the country\,” says Peters. “The road offers us structure and it gives us something to write\nabout. These past two years we learned just how much we love and need it.”\nAs they leaned into their wanderlust\, themes became apparent – the idea of a life spent in motion (“Shine”)\, the\npower of the storm representing a relationship transformed into heartbreak (“The Lightning”)\, Man’s ceaseless\ndegradation of resources and Nature’s inevitable fury (“Worldender”)\, and Harry Styles (“Harry Styles”)\, who\nshould be considered a force of Nature as far as Peters and Earley are concerned. “We were sitting around our\nwoodstove\, and Callie looked over at me and said\, ‘I think I’m in love with Harry Styles\,'” Earley recalls. “And my\nfirst thought was\, ‘wait a minute\, I love Harry Styles! You can’t have him!’”\nClouds became an opportunity for the band to mine the challenges of the past three years for creative inspiration.\n“We were able to step away from a lot of the big three-part harmonies and for the first time we recorded most of\nthe album live\,” says Earley. “We try to let change inspire us\, even when it comes with difficulty.”\nIt’s an artistic statement that doubles as a life mission. The pair both emphasize that they’ve learned to navigate\ncomplicated situations\, including their struggles with depression\, which often colors their songs. If they can impart\nanything to listeners\, it’s that talking about mental health is not a weakness—and that sharing any of life’s trials\ncan be a source of strength.\n“There’s so much material out there on fighting mental illnesses and keeping our heads up but I think it’s also\njust important to know that it’s okay to be affected. Awards in the ‘70s\, ‘90s\, and ‘20s\, #1 records in every decade but the 2010s. \nOnly Tanya Tucker can claim a resume like that: one long on living\, not judging\, creating\, not looking back. When 2019’s acclaimed While I’m Livin’ won the GRAMMY for Best Country Album\, and its poignant single “Bring My Flowers Now\,” not only won Best Country Song but was also nominated in the all-genre Song of the Year category\, it was a powerful statement about authenticity\, about staying power and about greatness. But that doesn’t always make the follow-up any easier. \nTanya Tucker has seen\, done and been places most people can’t imagine\, and she’s done it at a pace that would kill mere mortals. A child thrust into stardom with a series of precocious hits\, the iconic “Delta Dawn\,” “Would You Lay With Me\,” and “Blood Red & Goin’ Down\,” among them\, she then released a pair of wild and brash rock records at 18\, then returned to country music in her 20s to ultimately take the CMA Female Vocalist of the Year Award in 1991. Along the way\, she’s been a cutting horse champion\, played dives\, arenas\, stadiums\, and the Houston Rodeo\, created headlines\, and wrung out the absolute last drop out of every moment. \nAnd that approach to living is what makes her new album\, Sweet Western Sound (Fantasy) such a tour du force. Building on her collaboration with Brandi Carlile and Shooter Jennings (who co-produced Livin’)\, they dug deeper into the caverns and canyons of Tanya’s life. This time the music is bigger and more immediate\, the reckonings more profound; but as always\, the heart is strong\, honest\, and willing to tell the truth about it all. \n“Kristofferson\, Jessi Colter\, they know I’m a good person and have a good heart\,” she explains. “I didn’t really know them coming up\, though I was close to Waylon. It takes a few years maybe to get through the reputation\, you know? Was it that bad? So\, don’t screw that up for me now!” \nOnly Tanya Tucker could inspire the revered late outlaw songwriter Billy Joe Shaver to leave a tribute song on her voicemail. And only the copper-haired icon would think to keep Shaver’s legacy alive by bookending Sweet Western Sound’s journey through the emotional plains of her life with his acapella homages celebrating her essence. \nThough known as a wildcat vocalist\, in truth\, the Outlaw Myth has always been more attitude than lifestyle. It sprang out of Willie and Waylon’s unique brand of country\, one where the spirit is free\, the songs and performances melt stylistic rules and laughter abounds. \nIndeed\, Tanya’s career\, and its renaissance comes from a willingness to expose those deeper places\, to write her own story and draw on writers who have come to know her intimately. It’s there in the existentialist drifter’s postcard\, “Breakfast In Birmingham\,” a duet with Carlile\, which the 9-time GRAMMY winner wrote with Bernie Taupin. It’s also there in\, “Ready As I’ll Never Be\,” another slice of irresistible hard-spun wisdom Tanya co-wrote with Carlile. Carlile’s longtime collaborators\, Tim\, and Phil Hanseroth\, contributed “Kindness\,” a tender and empathetic acknowledgment of the understanding one only comes to through hard patches\, tough fates\, and busted dreams. \n“For me\, songwriting’s a release\,” explains the woman nominated for her first GRAMMY at 14. I finally finished “Bring My Flowers Now\,” 30\, 40 years down the road. My problem is I spit it out\, and I can’t retain it. I always tell people\, ‘If it comes out\, you better get it ‘cause I won’t remember it later.’ Brandi understands that\, puts in a few other lines\, and remembers things I’ve told her.” \n“I’m a Sunday writer\,” Tucker continues. “I’m gonna come over and eat some cornbread with ya\, laugh\, talk a bit and maybe we’ll write a song. If we talk about it\, set a time\, it’s too serious. The whole idea of ‘Get together at 10 o’clock in the morning\,’ where’s the inspiration in that?” \nInspiration for Tucker\, Carlile\, Jennings\, and the assembled musicians was everything. Though sessions were delayed by the increased demand for all three\, when they finally reconvened in the studio\, their passion was on full display. “I just go in and try to do the best vocal possible\,” she adds. “I put all the feeling I can into the songs. My Dad taught me from the youngest age\, that’s what you need to do.” \nYou can hear it in the soulful\, “City of Gold\,” the gorgeous gospel tune written by JT Nero of Birds of Chicago. It’s imbued in the Carlile/Hanseroth/Hanseroth confessional\, life-measuring “That Wasn’t Me\,” then it washes over Shooter Jennings’ stately piano in his “Waltz Across A Moment\,” which delivers the album’s title in a bouquet of life’s experiences. \n“Come and meet me in the shadows of this drunk and broken sound\,” she intones on the track\, voice all hickory smoke\, candle glow\, and Spanish leather\, “Don’t curse your mind with yesterday\, or the love we could have found/ Just waltz across the moment to that… sweet… Western sound.” In a moment\, all that she is\, delivered. A blessing\, a benediction\, an embrace\, a reason to believe when all’s gone wrong. To know how to hope in the face of darkness is the mark of true wisdom. For a woman still too young for Social Security\, it was earned by persevering\, by living. \n“Letter To Linda\,” was taken from an actual letter Tanya penned a few years ago on the news of her hero’s health struggles. “I walked into the Troubadour and heard (her version of) ‘Desperado\,’ and it all came rushing back\,” Tanya marveled. “I remember the first time I heard Heart Like A Wheel with that righteous combination of country\, pop\, and rock. It was everything I wanted to do… I only met her once\, but I wanted her to know how I felt.” \nPowered by a deep well of self-awareness\, “The List\,” a romping kiss-off Tucker/Carlile composition\, is another example of the fire that burns within. DESCRIPTION:Lyle Lovett\nA singer\, composer\, and actor\, Lyle Lovett has broadened the definition of American music in a career that spans 14 albums. Coupled with his gift for storytelling\, the Texas-based musician fuses elements of country\, swing\, jazz\, folk\, gospel\, and blues in a convention-defying manner that breaks down barriers. \nWhether touring as a ‘Duo’ or with his ‘Acoustic Group’ or his ‘Large Band\,’ Lovett’s live performances show not only the breadth of this Texas legend’s deep talents\, but also the diversity of his influences\, making him one of the most compelling and captivating musicians in popular music. \nSince his self-titled debut in 1986\, Lyle Lovett has evolved into one of music’s most vibrant and iconic performers. Among his many accolades\, besides the four Grammy Awards\, he was given the Americana Music Association’s inaugural Trailblazer Award\, and was named Texas State Musician. \nHis works\, rich and eclectic\, are some of the most beloved of any artist working today. \nLeo Kottke\nAcoustic guitarist Leo Kottke was born in Athens\, Georgia\, but left town after a year and a half. Raised in 12 different states\, he absorbed a variety of musical influences as a child\, flirting with both violin and trombone\, before abandoning Stravinsky for the guitar at age 11. \nAfter adding a love for the country-blues of Mississippi John Hurt to the music of John Phillip Sousa and Preston Epps\, Kottke joined the Navy underage\, to be underwater\, and eventually lost some hearing shooting at lightbulbs in the Atlantic while serving on the USS Halfbeak\, a diesel submarine. \nKottke had previously entered college at the U of Missouri\, dropping out after a year to hitchhike across the country to South Carolina\, then to New London and into the Navy\, with his twelve string. “The trip was not something I enjoyed\,” he has said\, “I was broke and met too many interesting people.” \nDischarged in 1964\, he settled in the Twin Cities area and became a fixture at Minneapolis’ Scholar Coffeehouse\, which had been home to Bob Dylan and John Koerner. He issued his 1968 recording debut LP Twelve String Blues\, recorded on a Viking quarter-inch tape recorder\, for the Scholar’s tiny Oblivion label. (The label released one other LP by The Langston Hughes Memorial Eclectic Jazz Band.) \nAfter sending tapes to guitarist John Fahey\, Kottke was signed to Fahey’s Takoma label\, releasing what has come to be called the Armadillo record. Fahey and his manager Denny Bruce soon secured a production deal for Kottke with Capitol Records. \nKottke’s 1971 major-label debut\, “Mudlark\,” positioned him somewhat uneasily in the singer/songwriter vein\, despite his own wishes to remain an instrumental performer. Still\, despite arguments with label heads as well as with Bruce\, Kottke flourished during his tenure on Capitol\, as records like 1972’s “Greenhouse” and 1973’s live “My Feet Are Smiling” and “Ice Water” found him branching out with guest musicians and honing his guitar technique. \nWith 1975’s Chewing Pine\, Kottke reached the U.S. Top 30 for the second time; he also gained an international following thanks to his continuing tours in Europe and Australia. \nHis collaboration with Phish bassist Mike Gordon\, “Clone\,” caught audiences’ attention in 2002. Kottke and Gordon followed with a recording in the Bahamas called “Sixty Six Steps\,” produced by Leo’s old friend and Prince producer David Z. \nKottke has been awarded two Grammy nominations; a Doctorate in Music Performance by the Peck School of Music at the U of Wisconsin\, Milwaukee; and a Certificate of Significant Achievement in Not Playing the Trombone from the U of Texas at Brownsville with Texas Southmost College. \n  \nEnjoy all of our upcoming performances on our new Byrider Stage!

That evolution continues with Heart is the Hero\, the band’s eighth studio album. Recorded analog to 16-track tape\, this latest effort finds its three creators embracing the chemistry of their acclaimed live shows by capturing their performances in real-time direct from the studio floor with nary a computer in sight. An acoustic-driven album that electrifies\, Heart is the Hero is stocked with songs that target not only the heart\, but the head and hips\, too.  \n“We love records that come from the era of less tracks and more care\,” explains co-founder Oliver Wood. “When you use a computer during the tracking process\, you have an infinite number of tracks at your disposal\, which implies that nothing is permanent\, and everything can be fixed. Tape gives you limitations that force you to be creative and intentional. You don’t look at the music on a screen; you listen to it\, and you learn to focus on the feeling of the performance.”  \nThroughout Heart Is The Hero\, those performances are matched by the visceral storytelling and songwriting chops that have turned The Wood Brothers into Grammy-nominated leaders of American roots music\, even as their music reaches far beyond the genre’s borders. The stripped-down swagger of “Pilgrim” underscores Oliver’s reminder to slow down and experience each moment as an interactive observer\, rather than a passive tourist. A similar theme anchors “Between the Beats\,” where Oliver draws upon a meditation technique — maintaining one’s focus on the space between heartbeats — to reach a new level of presence. The gentle sway of country soul gem “Rollin’ On\,” featuring horns by Matt Glassmeyer and Roy Agee\, expounds on the time-honored tradition of love as the guiding light through darkness\, while ”Mean Man World” finds Chris Wood singing about his responsibilities as a father whose young daughter is poised to inherit an uncertain future. “Line Those Pockets” is a universal call for mercy and understanding over materialism. “Everybody’s just trying to be happy\, so put your money away; line those pockets with grace\,” the band sings in three-part harmony during the song’s chorus\, which emphasizes compassion over cash as the world’s true currency. Together\, these songs offer a snapshot of a spirited\, independent-minded group at the peak of its powers\, always pushing forward and seeking to evolve beyond what’s come before.  \n“There’s still acoustic guitar\, upright bass\, and percussion on this album — things people use all the time — but we’re always thinking\, ‘How can we make this sound like us\, but not like something we’ve already done?'” Oliver says. “Sometimes\, the only way to do that is to get weird.”  \nThat sense of exploration pumps its way through Heart is the Hero like lifeblood. Arriving on the heels of 2019’s Live at The Fillmore\, 2020’s Kingdom In My Mind\, and Oliver Wood’s solo album Always Smilin’ — all of which were released on Honey Jar Records\, the band’s independent label — Heart is the Hero is bold\, bright\, and singularly creative\, a fully realized collective effort ultimately greater than the sum of its parts. Perhaps that’s to be expected from a group whose willingness to experiment has earned acclaim from Rolling Stone and NPR\, as well as an annual touring schedule of sold-out music halls and theaters on both sides of the Atlantic. Ask The Wood Brothers\, though\, and they’ll tell you to expect the unexpected. “We are never satisfied if we are not searching for new musical recipes\,” says Jano Rix\, nodding to the uncharted territory that Heart is the Hero covers. Chris Wood agrees\, adding\, “We are one of those bands that isn’t easily categorized. We know what our strengths are\, but we can’t help but push the envelope\, as well. It’s too much fun.”  \n\nMaya de Vitry\nMaya de Vitry’s dynamic and vibrant voice seems to rise out of some necessity of bringing songs to life\, embracing listeners with what Folk Alley calls a “soulful intimacy.” She grew up in a musical family in Lancaster County\, Pennsylvania\, understanding music to be a place of gathering\, a way to spend a summer night by a campfire. She was surrounded by bluegrass and old-time music\, and country\, gospel\, and folk songs. She took piano lessons from her grandmother\, and took up classical violin in school\, but it was some combination of the groove-centered fiddle music of Appalachia\, the vulnerable poetry in Townes Van Zandt’s songwriting\, and the deeply emotive phrasing of Billie Holiday’s singing that first compelled her to begin creating tunes and songs of her own – and it was around campfires that she slowly found the courage to begin singing them.  \nMaya first traveled and performed as a fiddling street musician\, and then in bars\, theaters\, and on festival stages as a founding member of The Stray Birds. When the trio parted ways in 2018\, Maya embarked on an ever-evolving musical path of solo work and new collaborations. Based in Nashville\, Tennessee\, she enjoys moving between acoustic and electric worlds\, playing in the musical spaces between folk\, country\, and indie rock – although she thinks of it all as “song music”. Her recordings and live performances embody both sincerity and playfulness\, and a compelling reverence for the power of songs to be a place of gathering – whether played on stage\, or around a campfire.  \nMaya tours with her acoustic trio\, and with her electric band\, each featuring a fluid lineup of consistently stellar musicians who create a powerfully dynamic show. DESCRIPTION:  \nThe six men comprising Styx have committed to rocking the Paradise together with audiences far and wide by entering their second decade of averaging over 100 shows a year\, and each one of them is committed to making the next show better than the last. Styx draws from over four decades of barnburning chart hits\, joyous singalongs\, and hard-driving deep cuts. Like a symphony that builds to a satisfying crescendo\, a Styx set covers a wide range of stylistic cornerstones. From the progressively sweeping splendor that is “The Grand Illusion” to the hunker-down fortitude of all that is the “Blue Collar Man\,” from the majestic spiritual love for a special “Lady” to the seething indictment of preening\, primping pageantry for pageantry’s sake of “Miss America\,” from an individual yearning for true connection as a “Man in the Wilderness” to a soul-deep quest to achieve what’s at the heart of one’s personal vision in “Crystal Ball\,” from the regal reach-for-the-stars bravado of “Come Sail Away” to the grainy all-in gallop of that rugged “Renegade” who had it made\, the band draws on an unlimited cache of ways to immerse one’s mind and body in their signature sound. \nStyx hit its stride with guitarist/vocalist Tommy Shaw’s first LP with the band\, 1976’s Crystal Ball\, and then they become the first group to score four triple-platinum albums in a row: The Grand Illusion (1977)\, Pieces of Eight (1978)\, Cornerstone (1979)\, and Paradise Theater (1981). Over the ensuing decade\, Styx weathered the shifting winds of the public’s musical taste\, reconvening for a highly successful 1996 Return to Paradise tour that was expertly documented on both CD and DVD in 1997. With a little help from their many friends in Cleveland’s Contemporary Youth Orchestra\, One With Everything (2006) became a hybrid orchestral rock blend for the ages. And on The Grand Illusion / Pieces of Eight Live (2011)\, the band performed at its peak when tackling every track from a pair of their finest triple-platinum albums back to back. Not only that\, but the band re-recorded two discs’ worth of its classic material with much finesse and musculature\, aptly known as Regeneration Volume I & II (2011 & 2012). Observes Tommy\, “Now you have something you can take home with you and go\, ‘Yeah\, that’s the band I saw last night.’ ” \nAfter more than a decade together on the road\, this incarnation of Styx is looking forward to performing as many shows as it can as long as it can. “It all comes back to the chemistry\,” says bassist/vocalist Ricky Phillips. “The legacy of this band will be that it brought joy to millions of people\,” notes drummer Todd Sucherman. Observes keyboardist/vocalist Lawrence Gowan\, “We’ve always tried to explain why this is this happening. It’s obviously a multitude of factors\, but the main one is that our show is really good! And if it’s really good\, they’re going to come to see it again.” Styx hopes it’s a wave that never crests. “Every night\, we go on that magic carpet ride together\,” observes original bassist Chuck Panozzo\, who joins the band on tour as often as he can. “Music is this amazing force that comes from a higher place. I’m humbled for this band to have the great success that it has\,” says co-founding guitarist/vocalist James “JY” Young. “We just want to keep on doing this\,” asserts Tommy. “We want to let life take its course and let this music continue to be the soundtrack to it. DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Esbenshade Series of Marietta College\nSarah Vowell\, the New York Times bestselling author of seven nonfiction books on American history and culture\, will take the stage at 8:00 p.m.\, Wednesday\, October 11\, at Peoples Bank Theatre as part of Marietta College’s 2023-24 Esbenshade Series. Ticket reservations begin at 10:00 a.m.\, Monday\, September 25. By examining the connections between the American past and present\, she offers personal\, often humorous accounts of American history as well as current events and politics. Her most recent book\, Lafayette in the Somewhat United States\, explores both the ideas and the battles of the American Revolution\, especially the patriot founders’ alliance with France as personified by the teenage volunteer in George Washington’s army\, the Marquis de Lafayette. Vowell’s previous book\, Unfamiliar Fishes\, is the intriguing history of our 50th state\, Hawaii\, annexed in 1898. Replete with a cast of beguiling and often tragic characters\, including an overthrown Hawaiian queen\, whalers\, missionaries\, sugar barons\, Teddy Roosevelt\, and assorted con men\, Unfamiliar Fishes is another history lesson in Americana as only Vowell can tell it — with brainy wit and droll humor. \nThe series\, funded by the Frederica G. Esbenshade Memorial Fund\, will once again feature five performances and all will be free of charge to the public. Ticket reservations begin two weeks before each show date.
