DESCRIPTION:Featuring special opening guest: Angela Perley\n\nThe music industry is a destructive animal where even the fittest isn’t guaranteed unscathed survival. That means indie rock band Red Wanting Blue is rare indeed. A quarter-century of steady artistic grow this virtually unheard of in the volatile world of rock music\, whether it’s an underground band struggling to find the key to success or a multi-million-selling supergroup buckling from the excesses of fame. \nRed Wanting Blue\, formed in 1996 in Athens\, Ohio\, is composed of Scott Terry on lead vocals\, tenor guitar\, and ukulele; Mark McCullough on bass\, chapman stick\, and vocals; Greg Rahm on guitar\, keyboards\, and vocals; Eric Hall on guitar\, lap steel\, and vocals; and Dean Anshutz on drums and percussion. SUMMARY:Esbenshade Series: Bob Thompson Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Featuring special guest vocalist Meredith Dean Augustin\n2015 West Virginia Music Hall inductee Bob Thompson is perhaps the state’s best-loved musician and ambassador of jazz. He has touched many people’s lives both as an internationally known entertainer and a teacher. \nGrowing up in NY\, he sang in street corner doo-wop bands and originally attended WVSC on a scholarship to study trumpet and music education. After switching to piano\, he quickly became a staple on the local scene with bands like the Modern Jazz Interpreters and Joi. \nAfter some independent releases\, he signed to Capitol Records subsidiary Intima and later to the Ichiban label. Two of his albums climbed into the Top 25 in Billboard’s contemporary jazz chart while four of his releases made their way into the Top 10 on the Radio and Records jazz chart. Those nationally released works furthered his reputation significantly. \nIn the meantime\, he performed in Brazil\, South Africa and Scandinavia. Appearances on BET\, as the house pianist on the NPR show Mountain Stage\, and several tours abroad have made Thompson a visible presence in the jazz world for more than 40 years. In addition\, for the past two decades Thompson’s annual holiday jazz show Joy to the World has become a regular feature of Public Radio International’s holiday programming. \n \nMeredith Dean Augustin\n“When she sings\, I feel close to God!” These words have been used to describe listening to Meredith. Love flows through her–and her voice touches hearts. A West Virginia girl\, who grew up in Morgantown\, Meredith began playing the piano and singing at a very young age. She describes\, “My mom taught piano lessons while I was in her womb. I think it started there. When I was two\, my mom and dad told me it was time to give up my pacifier\, and I could sing myself to sleep…. I haven’t stopped.” \nAfter completing her Masters of Science degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from West Virginia University\, Meredith’s musical activities began leading her to New York City\, where she eventually made her home. Currently\, she is the Director of Music at the Church of St. Francis of Assisi in midtown Manhattan. Meredith reflects\, “In the last15years\, my job has allowed me to come face to face with so many beautiful people from so many beautiful cultures. It certainly has helped me evolve personally\, as well as musically.” \nA rare artist who appeals to fans of all genres–particularly jazz/world/Christian–Meredith has been blessed to collaborate with musicians from all over the world\, in particular\, Haiti. She has collaborated with many liturgical composers and is featured on records with John Angotti\, Tom Kendiza\, and Chris DeSilva to name a few. Meredith also has released four solo records entitled: What’s Goin’ On\, Deep River\, Come and Go With Me\, and Boundless Mercy. When she is no ton the road presenting workshops and concerts at conferences throughout the country\, Meredith can be found performing quarterly shows in New York City\, selling out jazz clubs such as Club Bonafide\, Gin Fizz\, and the Triad Theatre\, to name a few. In the jazz world she has performed with Etienne Stadwijk\, John Benitez\, Dave Kikoski\, Axel Tosca and many others. Meredith has been a featured singer on Mountain Stage: Joy to the Word with Bob Thompson\, and she recently made her TV debut on Good Morning America singing background vocals with the legendary Patti LaBelle. \nEnjoy all of our upcoming performances on our new Byrider Stage!

DESCRIPTION:This free\, DORA-friendly event will be held on Putnam Street in front of Peoples Bank Theatre. \nThe Sour Mash String Band is an Americana Bluegrass band that started in 2015 when surveyor and musician/songwriter Josh Moody (guitar) met up with former WVU football player and musician/songwriter Cody Nutter. They started playing at local venues and open mics. When they were asked to provide a band for a gig\, they called on some musician friends and the chemistry and tunes started flowing effortlessly. It wasn’t long until they were playing all along the WV and Ohio border towns\, bringing their own flavor of bluegrass music everywhere they go. Playing everything from high-energy foot-stomping songs to soulful\, laid-back bluesy numbers\, the Sour Mash String Band brings a unique sound and flavor to their performances. The band is based in the Mid-Ohio Valley with members from various cities up to 2 hours away. \n They have played a variety of fairs\, festivals and venues including  the John Hartford Festival in Indiana \, Millennium Music Conference and Showcase in Harrisburg Pa (where one of their songs was chosen to showcase on the conference CD)\,and Nashville TN where they were interviewed and featured on the Nashville Side Streets Show. Some others are the Sam Jam Preview\, Rudy Fest\, Poston Lake Bluegrass Festival\, The Penny Royal\, and various others in Indiana\, Ohio\, Kentucky\, WV\, and Tennessee. \nThey released their first album “Down the Highway” in May 2016\, recorded at Hilltop Line Studio in KY. It is distributed worldwide and can be found on Apple iTunes\, CD baby\, Spotify\, Amazon\, and YouTube. Their second album Roll Me Away is produced by Bernie Nau at Peachfork Studios and contains many original songs by Josh Moody and Cody Nutter and was  released October 2020. \nThe band consists of 4 members Josh Moody (guitar\, vocals) Cody Nutter (mandolin\, vocals)  Harry Kuhn (upright bass\, vocals) and Mariane Barnett( vocals). DESCRIPTION:Glenn Miller disappeared on December 15\, 1944. The bandleader went down over the English Channel on a flight from London to Paris at the height of his popularity. In September 1942\, just prior to going into the army\, he had disbanded his famous orchestra and eventually formed the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band to entertain the servicemen. \nNot long before he enlisted\, he nosed-out Tommy Dorsey\, the “Best Sweet Band” in the Downbeat poll. His recordings of In The Mood\, Chattanooga Choo Choo\, A String of Pearls\, Moonlight Serenade and Tuxedo Junction were all major hit records. Miller played to sell out crowds\, and his music constantly dominated the airwaves. \nOn December 15\, Major Miller took off in an ancient\, single engine plane to precede his band to Paris. The weather was foreboding. Not very confident\, he said to the pilot\, “Maybe we ought to call this off?”  The flight officer ribbed him about his fear of flying\, “Do you want to live forever?” \nNow\, over sixty years since the public first embraced the successful Miller Sound\, both the legend and the music live on. The Glenn Miller Orchestra is the most sought after big band in the world today for both concert and dance engagements. Still considered the greatest band of all time\, its unique sound is loved by almost anybody that cares for dance music. \nThe Miller Estate formed the present Glenn Miller Orchestra in 1956 following strong popular demand aroused as a result of the successful motion picture\, an immense box office smash\, The Glenn Miller Story\, starring James Stewart and June Allyson. As a teen fiddler Bush was a three-time national champion in the junior division of the National Oldtime Fiddler’s Contest. In 1971\, Bush formed the New Grass Revival with Ebo Walker\, Courtney Johnson\, and Curtis Burch\, issuing the band’s eponymous debut. Shunned by some traditionalists\, New Grass Revival played bluegrass festivals slotted in late-night sets for the “long-hairs and hippies” and quickly became a favorite of rock audiences. \nBush was the newgrass commando\, incorporating a variety of genres into the repertoire. He discovered a sibling similarity with the reggae rhythms of Marley and The Wailers\, and\, accordingly\, developed an ear-turning original style of mandolin playing. The group released eight albums\, chart-climbing singles\, made videos\, shifted their line up (welcoming in banjoist Béla Fleck and guitarist Pat Flynn in 1981) and earned Grammy nominations. Cleveland is IBMA’s most awarded Fiddle Player of the Year with 12 wins\, has won Instrumental Recorded Performance of the Year six times\, and fronts their 6-Time Instrumental Group of the Year. And\, he is a 2018 Inductee to the National Fiddler Hall of Fame. Picking up the fiddle at age 4\, by age 9\, Michael was invited to sit in with the legendary Bill Monroe at the Bean Blossom Bluegrass Festival. Soon after\, he brought his virtuosic style to the Grand Ole Opry as a guest of Alison Kraus\, and was hand picked for the IBMA Bluegrass Youth Allstars before he was 14. His blistering prowess and technical fluency have since marked him as a sought-after musician\, leading to performances with Vince Gill\, Marty Stuart\, Tim O’Brien\, J.D. Crowe and the New South\, Andy Statman\, and The Kruger Brothers in recent years. However\, it wasn’t until 2006\, when Michael formed his own band Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper\, that he found the right vehicle for his musical vision\, and he hasn’t rested since\, constantly looking for new ways to push himself and his music forward. \nSierra Hull\nIn her first 25 years alone\, singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Sierra Hull hit more milestones than many musicians accomplish in a lifetime. After making her Grand Ole Opry debut at the age of 10\, the Tennessee-bred virtuoso mandolinist played Carnegie Hall at age 12\, then landed a deal with Rounder Records just a year later. Now 28-years-old\, Hull delivered her fourth full-length album for Rounder in 2020: an elegantly inventive and endlessly captivating album called 25 Trips. A prominent Nashville session musician\, he has appeared on stage or in the studio with an endless list of diverse artists such as Alison Krauss\, Del McCoury\, Garth Brooks\, Emmylou Harris\, Brad Paisley\, Vince Gill\, Bruce Hornsby\, Béla Fleck\, Peter Frampton\, Rosanne Cash\, Marty Stuart and Barry Gibb among many others. In 2018 and 2020 he was named Dobro Player of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association. Moses began his musical journey at the age of six after becoming interested in the mandolin. He soon developed a lasting passion for making music. He started to hone his skills playing in his family’s band as a child. Since then\, he’s toured with bands such as Blue Moon Rising\, The Dan Tyminski Band\, Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder\, Blue Highway and The Gibson Brothers. In his two-year stint with Tyminski\, he realized an early dream of playing the Grand Ole Opry for the first time and recorded the 2009 IBMA Album of the Year and Grammy-nominated album\, Wheels. He released his full-length album Fall Like Rain on January 22\, 2021 with Mountain Fever Records. \nMark Schatz\nTwice named IBMA’s Bass Player of  the Year\, Mark Schatz has toured and recorded with a stellar array of artists including Bela Fleck\, Tony Rice\, John Hartford\, Tim O’Brien\, Nickel Creek\, Claire Lynch\, and Sarah Jarosz. Mark is the Musical Director for internationally acclaimed Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble which showcases other talents such as clawhammer banjo and Southern Appalachian clog dancing. This versatile multi-instrumentalist has two of his own solo recordings\, Brand New Old Tyme Way and Steppin’ in the Boiler House on Rounder Records\, which feature his own eclectic blend of original compositions on the banjo\, and two bass instructional videos on Homespun. Mark recently launched his own solo show: Mark Schatz — The Solo Concert\, in which he brings all of his skills to bear to tell his story through his own tunes and songs. \nBryan Sutton\nBryan Sutton is the most accomplished and awarded acoustic guitarist of his generation\, an innovator who bridges the bluegrass flatpicking traditions of the 20th century with the dynamic roots music scene of the 21st. His rise from buzzed-about young sideman to first-call Nashville session musician to membership in one of history’s greatest bluegrass bands has been grounded in quiet professionalism and ever-expanding musicianship. Sutton is a Grammy Award-winner and a nine-time IBMA Guitar Player of the Year. But these are only the most visible signs of Sutton’s accomplishments. He inherited and internalized a technically demanding instrumental style and has become for young musicians of today the same kind of model and hero that Tony Rice and Clarence White were for him. Harry Wayne Casey–KC for short–developed a unique fusion of R&B and funk\, with a hint of a Latin percussion groove\, giving us an impressive string of hits like “GET DOWN TONIGHT”\, “THAT’S THE WAY (I LIKE IT)” and “SHAKE YOUR BOOTY”. With sales of over 100 million records\, nine Grammy nominations\, three Grammy Awards\, and an American Music Award\, KC and The Sunshine Band was one of the most progressive bands of the 70’s and is credited with changing the sound of modern pop music! \nKC and The Sunshine Band play over 100 live shows annually\, circling the country and playing dates regularly throughout Europe\, Australia and South America. Written by founder\, Harry Wayne Casey (KC)\, the song impacted the Billboard Dance Chart at No. 46 giving him his fourth consecutive Billboard Dance charting single. “With all the tension in the world right now\, I wanted to write a song to help people escape and leave their worries behind\,” said Casey. “I want people to get onto the dance floor and shake their booty\, like we did in the old days and are still doing today.”  \nThe deluxe remix collection features hot versions of the single served up by a who’s-who of dancefloor deliverers\, including the legendary Tony Moran and Brian Cua\, Ralphi Rosario\, Eric Kupper\, Bob Rosa\, LA Rush\, Vauxhill\, Joe Gillan\, Serbiscan and Mark Hagan.  \nKC and The Sunshine Band released\, Feeling You! The 60s\, in March 2015\, their first album in over a decade. The album is a tribute to the era that shaped H.W. Casey into the revolutionary artist he became in the 70s\, as a young person becoming acquainted with the world around him. Just like the rest of America during that time he was shaped by the music\, conflicts\, innocence\, sex\, social and political movements and counterculture of the era – which led to him founding the Dance Revolution and teaching the world how to boogie. “The widespread social and political issues of the 1960s was\, in part\, the inspiration to do something that would make people forget about their problems and be happy\,” said Casey. “People were looking for something that would divert their attention from the negative aspects of everyday life surrounding them.” \nPart one of the two-part Feeling You project\, the release featured covers of songs by sixties legends Bob Dylan\, Ben E. King\, The Kinks\, The Righteous Brothers\, Jackie DeShannon\, Aaron Neville and many more. “I’m excited for my fans to hear this album\,” said Casey. “I really went outside of the box vocally and creatively. Feeling You! The 60s is autobiographical\, showing how I feel about love\, life and the world through the music of that era.” \nContinuing his legacy as The Founder of The Dance Revolution\, just a few years ago\, KC headlined KC’s Boogie Blast: The Ultimate Dance Party tour with stops throughout the US and Canada.  The dance extravaganza also featured Gloria Gaynor\, Sister Sledge and fellow ‘SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER’ soundtrack alums Tavares. \nH.W. Casey started working in the music business at age 17\, performing menial tasks around the T.K. Records/Studio complex in his hometown of Miami.  The Sunshine Band originated in 1973.  Their first record\, ‘BLOW YOUR WHISTLE’\, made the top 15 on the R&B chart.  Their second album\, ‘KC AND THE SUNSHINE BAND’\, was released in 1975\, went triple platinum and contained the #1 hits “GET DOWN TONIGHT”\, “THAT’S THE WAY (I LIKE IT)”\, “BOOGIE SHOES” and “ROCK YOUR BABY”.   KC and the Sunshine Band became the first act to score four #1 pop singles in one 12-month period since the Beatles in 1964.  Three of those singles crossed over to become #1 R&B\, as well. \nKC’s third album\, PART 3\, released in 1976\, also went triple platinum and contained the #1 singles “I’M YOUR BOOGIE MAN”\, “SHAKE YOUR BOOTY” and “KEEP IT COMIN’ LOVE”.  The band’s string of hit singles continued with “BOOGIE SHOES”\, which was included on the ‘SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER’ soundtrack\, “PLEASE DON’T GO”\, and “YES\, I’M READY”\, a duet with high school friend Teri DeSario.  KC returned to the charts in 1983 with “GIVE IT UP”\, which also hit #1 in the UK. \nKC won a songwriting Grammy in 1976 for best R&B song for “WHERE IS THE LOVE”\, which was recorded by Betty Wright.  He also received Grammy Awards for Album of the Year\, as well as Producer of the Year in 1978 for his work on the ‘SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER’ soundtrack.   \nIn 1975 he won the American Music Award for Best R&B Artist.  In 2001\, KC was honored with the NARAS Governor’s Award\, the highest honor given by a chapter of the Academy. \nKC’s music continues to be a favorite today.  His songs have appeared in ads for companies like General Motors\, Burger King\, Payless Shoes\, Papa Jon’s Pizza\, Old Navy\, and Nick at Night.   \nHis music has also been featured in over 200 commercials and movies such as Forrest Gump (“Get Down Tonight”)\, Boogie Nights (“Boogie Shoes”)\, Boys Don’t Cry (“Rock Your Baby”)\, Rush Hour (“Get Down Tonight”)\, Carlito’s Way (“Rock Your Baby”\, “Shake Your Booty” and “That’s The Way I Like It”)\, and Austin Powers in Goldmember.  In the summer of 2003\, KC had a cameo in the feature film The In-Laws starring Michael Douglas and Albert Brooks.   \nKC’s songs are regularly heard at sporting events\, featured during Opening Ceremonies of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino\, Italy and performing a free concert in Salt Lake City for the 2002 Winter Olympics.  No stranger to the small screen\, KC’s songs have been featured in such shows as Desperate Housewives\,  Ally McBeal\, American Bandstand’s 50th Anniversary Party and most recently on American Idol and Dancing With The Stars with the help of the USC marching band.  KC and The Sunshine Band have the distinction of having made more appearances on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve than any other artist in the program’s history! \nMusic acts like White Zombie\, Baha Men\, Beyoncé Knowles and American Idols Kelly & Justin have covered his music.  Additionally\, KC and the Sunshine Band’s grooves and bass lines have been sampled in everything from R&B by R. DESCRIPTION:Featuring special guest: The Carpenter Ants \n“Funky\, cool and bad\,” is how Robert Cray describes his latest album\, That’s What I Heard\, out February 28. “I thought if we could get this thing that Sam Cooke used to have\, the kind of sound that early Sam Cooke records had\, that we could pull this off\,” says producer Steve Jordan. \nOver the past four decades\, Cray has created a sound that rises from American roots\, blues\, soul\, and R&B\, with five Grammy wins\, 20 acclaimed studio albums and a bundle of live albums that punctuate the Blues Hall of Famer’s career. On That’s What I Heard\, Robert celebrates the music of Curtis Mayfield\, Bobby “Blue” Bland\, The Sensational Nightingales and more\, alongside four newly written songs. Listen to the first single “Anything You Want” here (by Robert Cray)\, available now on all streaming services. \nCray and Jordan go way back\, having met during the making of the Chuck Berry documentary Hail! Hail! Rock ’n’ Roll\, in 1987. They started working together in 1999\, when Jordan produced the Grammy-winning Take Your Shoes Off\, and the recent Grammy-nominated LP\, Robert Cray & Hi Rhythm. That’s What I Heard is their sixth album. “Once you start working with Steve\, it’s kind of hard to get away from him\,” said Robert. \nThe music on That’s What I Heard falls into two camps\, the sweet and the funky. Of the former\, “You’re the One” comes from the Bobby “Blue” Bland songbook. “There’s this thing where I feel you kind of gotta get out of your own head when you’re covering one of your heroes\,” Cray explained. “Bobby’s one of those. You just let yourself go\, and do the song because you love it.” \nDon Gardner’s “My Baby Likes to Boogaloo” and the Billy Sha-Rae minor hit\, “Do It” are acknowledged rarities (the originals can be heard on the compilation\, Groove & Grind: Rare Soul). “Do It” is leaner and meaner\, the sort of bare-bones funk that defined the Detroit club sound in the early ’70s with Sha-Rae\, Dennis Coffey\, and Earl Van Dyke. Cray’s steamroller rendition gets a little extra push from guest guitarist Ray Parker\, Jr.\, who played in Sha-Rae’s band as a teen. \n“Burying Ground” is a sacred song from the Sensational Nightingales\, inspired by Cray’s youth\, when Sundays on the stereo were reserved for his parents’ gospel records. Curtis Mayfield wrote “You’ll Want Me Back” for Major Lance\, and Cray wrote “To Be with You” for his late friend\, Tony Joe White. “Hot” is another Cray original. “As for the lyrics\, “We always say to ourselves\, ‘I’m old\, but I’m hot\,’” he said\, and laughed. Spotted hanging around the studio\, Steve Perry sang harmony vocals on “Promises You Can’t Keep\,” written by Steve Jordan\, Kim Wilson and Danny Kortchmar. \n“Robert is just a great person besides being extraordinary talent\,” adds Jordan. “People gravitate to his guitar playing first\, but I think he’s one of the best singers I’ve heard in my life. Not only because of his singing ability\, but his interpretations. He’s such an honest soul in my opinion.” \nRobert’s band features Richard Cousins (bass)\, Dover Weinberg (keyboards)\, Terence F. Clark (drums)\, and Steve Jordan (drums\, percussion). \nThe Carpenter Ants\nSpecializing in “chicken-fried gospel soul\,” West Virginia’s premier rhythm and blues group offers lots of feel-good harmonies and a solid groove. DESCRIPTION:The Fields of Gettysburg is a song cycle that weaves together the personal stories of six people—actual people—whose lives intersected on the crossroads of Gettysburg during the epic battle that took place there on July 1–4\, 1863. \nCertainly a turning point of the American Civil War\, Gettysburg is among the ranks of the most significant battles in world history. Approximately 200\,000 lives collided in this small Pennsylvania town (population: 2\,500 at the time); creating at least that many viewpoints and a million stories to tell. \nThe FOG will introduce the listeners to six of these people and provide a glimpse of their individual and very personal stories.  The characters include two key Generals\, one Union and one Confederate\, who provide the moral bookends to the song cycle; three young Gettysburg natives who grew up together—only to be torn apart by the war—each yearning for some kind of reunion and a return to peace; and a mother who struggles to make sense of her own personal loss as well as the massive loss of the Nation’s youth. \nThis historically accurate musical presentation includes 12 songs and narrative that pulls the stories together\, all back-dropped by a pictorial presentation featuring period photographs and scenery of Gettysburg and the people involved. The entire show runs approximately 80 minutes. \nThe PBT presentation of The FOG will be the full-ensemble version of the song cycle (acoustic & electric guitars\, bass\, drums\, piano\, violin & harmonica played by John A. After years of living in her van and busking on the streets of New Orleans and Seattle\, she moved to Nashville and soon landed a deal with Rounder Records on the strength of her magnetic live show. "Since I'm singing about the ocean in that song\, I wanted it to have a calypso vibe — but then there's also a bit of a tango feel to it\, and some Spanish influence too\," Ferrell points out. Noting that she first became fascinated with island music while touring with blues singer/songwriter C.W. A bold departure from the rugged simplicity of that rendition\, the album version of "In Dreams" unfolds with an unbridled splendor that wholly intensifies the impact of Ferrell's outpouring. Meanwhile\, in reimagining the self-reflective "Made Like That\," Ferrell introduces unexpected flourishes like loping percussion and luminous piano tones\, ultimately building an even more immersive atmosphere around the song's softly devastating confession. "When I wrote 'Made Like That\,' I was thinking about where I am now compared to what my life was like in West Virginia\," she says. "It was hell for me to be stuck in a small town\, but I got out and finally realized what the world had to offer. Now I'm here\, and I'm so much healthier and happier." \nDespite its endless wandering into new sonic terrain\, Long Time Coming is indelibly rooted in Ferrell’s ravishing vocal presence\, revealing her extraordinary ability to draw enormous feeling from just one single note. A lifelong singer\, she got her start performing covers in a local bar at the young age of seven. “There was this little dead-end bar nearby that my mom and I would go hang out at during the day\, and I’d get up and sing Shania Twain songs\,” she recalls. “There’d be hardly anyone in there\, so I’d have free rein of the place.” Later on\, while living in a trailer park\, Ferrell had a chance encounter that would soon turn out to be life-changing. “I met all these homeless kids who were traveling all over the place and playing amazing old songs\, and I wanted to be a part of that\,” says Ferrell. “The music they were making was so honest\, so pure. It seemed important to bring that kind of music back\, and it’s been with me ever since.” Though her years of traveling proved immensely formative\, Ferrell eventually settled in Nashville in her late 20s. Soon after her arrival\, she began taking the stage at major festivals like The Avett Brothers at the Beach\, AmericanaFest\, and Out on The Weekend and touring with the likes of Parker Millsap and Charley Crockett\, immediately captivating crowds with her joyful and spirited live set. \nA consummate musician’s musician\, Ferrell found an easy camaraderie with the many luminaries who accompanied her on Long Time Coming. To that end\, her most cherished moments in the album’s production include the recording of the soul-stirring choir-like harmonies of “West Virginia Waltz\,” as well as Rory Hoffman’s impromptu whistling on “Bells of Every Chapel.” (“Rory’s got one heck of a whistle on him\,” she marvels). At the same time\, the making of Long Time Coming fully affirmed her affinity for lifers like Strings. “Billy’s in it for the music\, which is something we have in common\,” she says. “We’re just gonna keep playing till we’re not on this Earth anymore.” \nWhile the wayward sound of Long Time Coming is in many ways a perfect echo of Ferrell’s free-spirited nature\, there’s also a much deeper intention at play: a desire to expand her listeners’ capacity for wonder\, so that they might uncover some enchantment in their own lives. “A lot of us are taught to wake up\, go to work\, make money\, eat\, sleep\, rinse\, repeat\,” says Ferrell. “It’s so easy to get caught up in that nine-to-five routine\, and end up numb and dulled-down to everything.
