He is the master of satire and one of today’s most observant writers addressing the human condition\, especially apparent in his latest book\, a collection of his diaries entitled Theft By Finding: Diaries (1977-2002) (May 2017). \n\n\n\n\nBeloved for his personal essays and short stories\, David Sedaris is the author of Barrel Fever\, Holidays on Ice\, Naked\, Me Talk Pretty One Day\, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim\, When You Are Engulfed in Flames\, Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls\, and Theft By Finding: Diaries (1977-2002). He is the author of Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk:A Modest Bestiary\, a collection of fables with illustrations by Ian Falconer. Each of these books was an immediate bestseller. He was also the editor of Children Playing Before a Statue of Hercules: An Anthology of Outstanding Stories. His pieces regularly appear in The New Yorker and have twice been included in “The Best American Essays.” There are over ten million copies of his books in print and they have been translated into 25 languages. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHe and his sister\, Amy Sedaris\, have collaborated under the name “The Talent Family” and have written half-a-dozen plays which have been produced at La Mama\, Lincoln Center\, and The Drama Department in New York City. Since 2011\, he can be heard annually on a series of live recordings on BBC Radio 4 entitled “Meet David Sedaris.” \nAs a companion piece to Theft By Finding\, Jeffrey Jenkins published and edited an art book of Sedaris’s diary covers\, entitled David Sedaris Diaries: A Visual Compendium (October 2017). A forthcoming book of essays entitled Calypso is set to be published June 2018\, and a second volume of his diaries is expected for summer 2019.

Playing the hulusheng\, a mouth organ made from dried gourds\, and even an ordinary leaf used as a reed\, Manhu shares instruments and songs that are well-known in their homeland but rarely seen on an international stage. Mid-Ohio Valley singers Su Voycik-Meredith\, David Rexroad\, Amanda DeBarr Stevens\, and R.J. Lowe will provide a delightful menu of melodies\, including Moondance\, Shenandoah\, Under the Boardwalk\, Walkin’ After Midnight\, Those Lazy\, Crazy Days of Summer\, as well as selections from Wicked\, Cinderella\, Porgy and Bess\, and Follies. \nBefore the concert\, join us for a reception and art showing by artist Beth Nash\, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.\, with light hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. An instructor in the art department at Marietta College\, Beth shows her work in art shows and galleries throughout the United States. Previous to her work as a fine artist\, Beth spent 25 years as a fabric and clothing designer. Her work can be found on Facebook and Instagram. \nBlue in the Face\, by Beth Nash\n\n\n\n\n  \n Su Voycik-Meredith\, a lifetime Mariettan\, has been making the stage at the Peoples Bank Theatre her new home\, having recently portrayed Fraulein Schneider in Cabaret\, as part of the Hipp Stage/Marietta College Summer Stock\, and also last year as Aunt Eller in Oklahoma! Having over 40 years of experience in professional\, regional and community theatre\, some of her favorite roles have included\, Mrs. Lovett (Sweeney Todd)\, Eva Peron (Evita)\, Audrey (Little Shop of Horrors) and Eliza Doolittle (My Fair Lady). Su remains grateful for the many opportunities she receives to share her talents with the Mid-Ohio Valley. \nDavid Rexroad\, a Parkersburg native\, thrilled audiences in the off-Broadway production of The Fantasticks and called Manhattan his home for 40 years. He did perform in many fund raising efforts in Wood County for the Blennerhassett Drama Association and the YMCA\, FRIENDS OF YOUTH musical revues at the Smoot Theatre and is an instructor at Camp Vaudeville teaching local youth performers all he knows about performance. He now resides in Parkersburg and is an actor and director at the Actors Guild of Parkersburg. David is passionate about theatre and about being a mountaineer. \nAmanda DeBarr Stevens is a graduate of PHS\, and WVU-P and the proud mother of two daughters. Mandy began entertaining audiences very young as a charter member of Young Artists International\, and continues to perform in local theater at the Actors Guild. In addition to her Administrative work at Artsbridge\, she is also a catalog artist for them. With her rich theatre background\, she brings characters to life through her joy for singing and honesty. She is a member of the singing group\, “ ShhhBang” and performs with the dance band\, MIXX. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nR.J. Lowe began his life in theater 31 years ago in “The King & I” at the Actors Guild of Parkersburg. Since then he has performed in over 50 shows at the Guild\, as well as and professionally (“Nunsense A-Men!\,” “Two By Two\,” “Grease!\,” “Lend Me a Tenor\,” “It’s a Wonderful Life\,” “A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum\,” and more) R.J. He is the proud recipient of the AACT Best Actor Award and several OCTA Outstanding awards for his portrayal of Alvin Kelby in “The Story of My Life.” He has also won many other OCTA awards and three MOVP Khalil Awards (actor/director – “Nunsense A-Men!” and actor – “…Charlie Brown”).  A Vienna native\, R.J. is a 1998 graduate of NYC’s The American Musical and Dramatic Academy.

DESCRIPTION:Presented with support from Tenney & Associates.  \nWith Special Guest Micah Kesselring \nRobert Cray has been bridging the lines between blues\, soul and R&B for the past four decades\, with five Grammy wins and over 20 acclaimed albums. For his latest project\, Robert Cray & Hi Rhythm (April 28 / Jay-Vee Records)\, the Blues Hall of Famer traveled to Memphis with his friend\, renowned Grammy Award winning producer Steve Jordan\, to make a classic soul album with Hi Rhythm\, the band that helped create that sound. \nCray’s signature blend of rhythm and blues\, pop\, rock\, soul\, and traditional blues have made him a standout\, prompting Guitar Player Magazine to declare: “Cray is not only making great music\, he’s making history.” \nhttps://youtu.be/BY5qiL0NJpU \nHis Grammy-winning 1986 album Strong Persuader made Cray a leader of the ’80s blues resurgence alongside Stevie Ray Vaughan and The Fabulous Thunderbirds\, and propelled hits “Smoking Gun” and “Right Next Door (Because of Me)” onto the charts the year of its release. He followed that success with his next Grammy winner\, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark (1988)\, which featured the hit single of the same name. \n \nRobert Cray has lead a celebrated career as a blues musician. In the 1978 film National Lampoon’s Animal House\, Cray was the uncredited bassist in the house party band Otis Day and the Knights. In 1992\, Cray was invited to play at the “Guitar Legends” concerts in Seville\, Spain where he played a signature track\, “Phone Booth”. He supported Eric Clapton on his 2006-2007 world tour\, even performing with Clapton on backup guitar for the Cream song “Crossroads”. \nMicah Kesselring\nMicah Kesselring\, 23\, has performed blues music since he was 14 years old. Raised in the Appalachia foothills of southeastern Ohio\, Kesselring quickly made his way onto the Columbus blues music scene after playing smaller hometown shows\, and became acquainted with the Columbus Blues Alliance. He soon made his way down to Memphis\, TN for the International Blues Challenge\, representing the Columbus Blues Alliance in the Youth Showcase category. Following a performance at the Blues City Cafe on Beale Street\, he was awarded the inaugural Generation Blues scholarship at the age of 15 to the Centrum Port Townsend Acoustic Blues Festival & Workshop in Port Townsend\, Washington\, which was presented to him by Cassie Taylor at the IBC band finals. Micah later went on to perform as a special guest with the Otis Taylor Band at the Blues Music Awards in May of 2009\, and performed at numerous festivals\, including the Heritage Music Bluesfest in Wheeling\, West Virginia\, the Traditional Acoustic Blues Festival in Worthington\, Ohio\, the Grey Skies Blues Fest in Tacoma\, Washington\, Creekside Blues & Jazz Festival in Gahanna\, Ohio and the Big Bend Blues Bash in Pomeroy\, Ohio\, throughout the next couple of years. DESCRIPTION:See\, hear and experience silent film just as it would have been presented in our historic theatre in the 1920s! \nJoin us for a family–friendly evening of music and film with Fox Theatre organist Dave Calendine\, presented in conjunction with the 42nd Annual Mid-Am Band Organ Rally hosted by American Flags & Poles. \nThe night will open with an audience sing-along of “Music of the Mouse: Music from the Walt Disney Songbook\,” featuring favorite tunes from classic Disney movies and cartoons. \nThen the program will step back in time for the Buster Keaton silent film comedy\, The Balloonatic\, with live accompaniment provided on the organ by Calendine. \nDave Calendine\nDave Calendine\, a Warren\, Ohio native\, started his musical career with the player piano at the age of 3.  By age 5\, he was playing some of the music without the aid of the player mechanism.  By age 7\, he was playing at his church\, where he also started to teach himself the organ at age 15. \nWhen at age 16\, Dave first heard the magnificent sound of the theatre organ\, he was instantly hooked and determined to play the theatre organ at whatever the cost.  His wish came true when\, one night after a movie\, the management of the Akron Civic Theatre let him play.  Shortly after that\, he was hired as one of the house organist at the 2\,678-seat movie palace.  The youngest person to ever hold the position\, he entertained audiences there for over 3 years. \nAfter leaving the Akron Civic Theatre\, he continued on\, playing at several restaurants featuring theatre pipe organs\, such as the Organ Grinder (Toronto\, Canada)\, and Shady Nook (Cincinnati\, Ohio).  Dave has also played several theatre pipe organs throughout the United States and Canada. \nIn 2000\, he went on his first overseas solo concert tour through Germany and Switzerland\, playing to packed houses. \nDave currently holds the position of Resident Organist and organ curator for Detroit’s fabulous Fox Theatre\, holding that position for 25 years now.  He has also played nine years for the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular\, featuring the world-famous Rockettes. \nDave’s enthusiasm for the theatre and theatre pipe organ has him serving on the Board of Directors and Corporate Secretary for the American Theatre Organ Society.  He is the Chairman of the Board of Directors and President of the Motor City Theatre Organ Society\, which owns and operates the Redford Theatre in Detroit.  He is also on the Board of Directors and Treasurer of the Detroit Theatre Organ Society\, which owns and operates the Senate Theatre.  He was also the President of the Flint Theatre Organ Club\, an auxiliary support group for the Flint Institute of Music. \nDave’s love of mechanical musical instruments also has him actively involved with the Musical Box Society\, International (MBSI).  He is currently Chairman of the Mid-America Chapter of MBSI\, and past secretary of the Lake Michigan Chapter of MBSI.  His work with mechanical instruments has garnered him various awards\, including being honored by the Governor of the State of Montana for his work on restoring the Bovey Collection of Mechanical Instruments\, one of the largest public displays of mechanical music in the United States of America.  His achievements there were also recognized in an Achievement Award by President George W. Bush. \nFor his regular employment\, Dave works in the Operations Department of Olympia Entertainment\, one of the nation’s premier presenters of sports and live entertainment\, operating several venues in Detroit\, including the Fox Theatre\, City Theatre\, Hockeytown Café\, Joe Louis Arena (current home of the 11-time Stanley Cup-winning Detroit Red Wings) and Comerica Park (home of the American League Champion Detroit Tigers). Opening in September of 2017 will be the new Little Caesars Arena\, which will be home to both the Detroit Red Wings and the Detroit Pistons. \nIn the fall of 2007\, Dave was honored by being inducted into the Achievement Hall of Fame at his high school\, Champion High School\, in Warren\, Ohio.   The first person to be inducted for the performing arts\, he was nominated by several of his former teachers. \nDave is organist at his church\, Southminster Presbyterian Church in Taylor\, Michigan. \nCurrently 45 years old\, Dave resides in Detroit\, Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed alt-rock bands Soul Asylum and Cracker are performing a double headline concert at the historic Peoples Bank Theatre! \nSoul Asylum\nFormed in Minneapolis in 1981\, Grammy Award-winning band Soul Asylum’s raucous live sets and early releases on the hometown indie label Twin/Tone — including the albums Say What You Will\, Made to Be Broken and While You Were Out — earned it a loyal fan base and widespread critical acclaim. \nSoul Asylum’s indie success led to the band entering the major-label mainstream with 1988’s Hang Time and its 1990 follow-up And the Horse They Rode In On\, and achieving a platinum-level commercial breakthrough with 1992’s Grave Dancers Union and 1995’s Let Your Dim Light Shine. Grave Dancers Union featured the international hits “Runaway Train\,” which won a 1994 Grammy as Best Rock Song\, and “Black Gold\,” while Let Your Dim Light Shine spawned the hit “Misery.” \nCracker\nChart-topping band Cracker has been described as a lot of things over the years: alt-rock\, Americana\, and insurgent-country. They have even had the terms punk and classic-rock thrown at them. But more than anything\, Cracker are survivors. Cofounders David Lowery and Johnny Hickman have been at it for a quarter of a century – amassing ten studio albums\, multiple gold records\, thousands of live performances\, hit songs that are still in current radio rotation around the globe (“Low\,” “Euro-Trash Girl\,” “Get Off This\,” and “Turn On\, Tune In\, Drop Out With Me” to name just a few)\, and a worldwide fan base that— despite the major sea-changes within the music industry— continues to grow each year. \nCracker‘s tenth and most recent studio effort\, the double-album\, Berkeley To Bakersfield\, finds this uniquely American band traversing two different sides of the California landscape – the northern Bay area and further down-state in Bakersfield. Musically\, these two regions couldn’t be further apart from one another. In the late 70s and 80s a harder-edged style of rock music emerged from the Bay area\, while Bakersfield is renowned for its own iconic twangy country music popularized\, most famously\, by Buck Owens and Merle Haggard in the ‘60s and ‘70s. DESCRIPTION:June 29\, July 1\, 2\, 7\, 8 & 9 with all shows starting at 8:30 p.m. in Muskingum Park. \nFollow Shakespeare by the River on Facebook. \nJoin us for the fourth annual Shakespeare By The River Festival\, presenting The Merchant of Venice in Marietta’s Muskingum Park this June and July. \nAs always\, this exciting open-air theatrical event is FREE and open to the public. \nThe Merchant of Venice written between 1596 and 1598 is Shakespeare’s comedy centred around love\, money\, prejudice and social injustice. \nSYNOPSIS \nAntonio\, the Merchant of Venice\, lends three thousand ducats to his friend Bassanio in order to assist him in his wooing of the wealthy and beautiful Portia of Belmont\, an estate some distance from Venice. \nAntonio’s own money is tied up in business ventures that depend on the safe return of his ships from sea\, so he borrows the money from Shylock\, a Jewish moneylender whom he has previously insulted for his high rates of interest. \nShylock lends the money against a bond. Failure to repay the loan on the agreed date will entitle Shylock to a pound of Antonio’s flesh. \nPORTIA’S SUITORS \nPortia’s father has decreed that she will marry whichever suitor makes the correct choice when presented with three caskets\, made of gold\, silver and lead. \nWhere wealthy suitors from Morocco and Aragon fail\, Bassanio succeeds by choosing lead. His friend Gratiano marries Portia’s lady-in-waiting Nerissa at the same time. \nNews arrives that Antonio’s ships have been lost; he is unable to pay his debt. \nA TRIAL \nShylock’s claim to his pound of flesh is heard in the law court before the duke.\nUnknown to their husbands\, Portia disguises herself as a young male lawyer acting on behalf of Antonio\, Nerissa as a clerk. \nPortia argues that Shylock is entitled to his pound of flesh but not to spill any of Antonio’s blood. \nShe also says that the Jew should forfeit his life for having conspired against the life of a Venetian. \nDon’t read any more if you don’t want to know the ending! \nThe duke pardons Shylock on condition that he gives half his wealth to Antonio and half to the state. \nAntonio surrenders his claim on condition that Shylock converts to Christianity and leaves his property to his daughter Jessica\, whom he has disinherited for running away with her Christian lover\, Lorenzo. \nPortia and Nerissa then assert their power over Bassanio and Gratiano through a trick involving rings that the men have promised never to part with. \nFinally\, there is good news about Antonio’s ships.

A Marietta\, Georgia native\, Travis Tritt is dubbed one of “The Class of ‘89\,” which included Country music superstars Garth Brooks\, Clint Black and Alan Jackson; all of whom dominated the charts in the early 1990s. Among his eleven studio albums and numerous charted singles are nineteen Top 10 hits\, including “Modern Day Bonnie and Clyde\,” “Here’s A Quarter” and “It’s A Great Day To Be Alive.” Over the course of his career\, he has amassed more than 25 million career album sales\, two Grammy award wins and multiple No. 1 singles on the Country radio charts. DESCRIPTION:126 min\nPG\n1967 \nPaul Newman was nominated for an Oscar and George Kennedy received one for his work in this allegorical prison drama. Luke Jackson (Paul Newman) is sentenced to a stretch on a southern chain gang after he’s arrested for drunkenly decapitating parking meters. While the avowed ambition of the captain (Strother Martin) is for each prisoner to “get their mind right\,” it soon becomes obvious that Luke is not about to kowtow to anybody. When challenged to a fistfight by fellow inmate Dragline (George Kennedy)\, Luke simply refuses to give up\, even though he’s brutally beaten. Luke knows how to win at poker\, even with bad cards\, by using his smarts and playing it cool. Luke also figures out a way for the men to get their work done in half the usual time\, giving them the afternoon off. Finally\, when Luke finds out his mother has died\, he plots his escape; when he’s caught\, he simply escapes again. Soon\, Luke becomes a symbol of hope and resilience to the other men in the prison camp — and a symbol of rebelliousness that must be stamped out to the guards and the captain. Along with stellar performances by Newman\, Kennedy\, and Martin\, Cool Hand Luke features a superb supporting cast\, including Ralph Waite\, Harry Dean Stanton\, Dennis Hopper\, Wayne Rogers\, and Joe Don Baker as members of the chain gang. \nCast: \nPaul Newman\nGeorge Kennedy\nJ.D.
