She appeared on NPR’s Mountain Stage in 2013 with The Fields of Gettysburg\, was a quarterfinalist in the 2015 and 2017 American Traditions Competition\, and won Best Cover Song in the 2015 and 2017 Ohio Music Awards. As a singer-songwriter\, her voice leans toward soulful styles with southern roots. In addition to her own songs\, she loves to write music for texts by modern poets. When she’s not singing\, Jess is a voice specialist. She works with singers across the region and helps train voice teachers to work with singers in popular\, commercial\, and contemporary styles of singing. \nBOB THOMPSON\nwww.colortones.com\n(Inductee – WV Music Hall of Fame)\nSince 1991 Bob Thompson has been pianist\, and regularly featured artist on West Virginia’s NPR syndicated radio show\, Mountain Stage. For the past twenty-four years he has also been co-producer and host of Joy to the World\, a Holiday jazz show\, broadcast on public radio stations nationwide\, and heard internationally on the Voice of America. In October 2015\, Bob Thompson was inducted into the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame.\nBob makes his home in Charleston\, West Virginia\, and has enjoyed a long and active career as a performer\, composer\, arranger\, and educator. For decades he has played at festivals and venues around the country\, and has also taken his music to Europe\, Africa\, and South America.\nBob Thompson’s resume includes guest appearances on Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz\, on National Public Radio\, and BET on Jazz with Ramsey Lewis. His recordings on Intima Records\, and Ichiban International\, received high recognition on the jazz charts\, with several reaching the top-ten. His recent recordings\, Bob Thompson “Live” on Mountain Stage\, and Smile\, with the Bob Thompson Unit\, are on his own label\, Colortones \nTODD BURGE\nwww.toddburge.com\nEmploying wry humor\, dexterous guitar work and drawing on a rich variety of life experiences\, Todd Burge has emerged as one of West Virginia’s most prolific singer/songwriters. Burge\, has played everything from Alternative Rock (63 Eyes\, The Larries) to Contemporary Folk\, performing concerts at festivals and in venues as diverse as CBGB’s & Joe’s Public Theatre in NYC\, The Country Music Hall of Fame\, The Kennedy Center\, and of course\, literally hundreds of clubs including the obscure\, to the world famous Caffe Lena\, Club Passim and Music City Roots. He has been a repeat guest on NPR’s Mountain Stage and has been called the “West Virginia’s premier songwriter”\, by its host\, Larry Groce. In 2014\, Burge wrote 13 songs for a musical adaptation of Love’s Labour’s Lost by William Shakespeare. Burge\, who might be known by many for his method of writing songs from the perspective of odd characters\, humans\, bugs and animals (listen to Building Characters produced by Don Dixon of R.E.M fame) released an album of very personal songs in 2015 entitled Imitation Life. The recording was produced by long term collaborator and two time Grammy winner\, Tim O’Brien. The album includes his original song\, Change (For Clean Water) which features Kathy Mattea on backing vocals. In 2016 Burge released “Live at Mountain Stage 2006-2015”. The 17 track CD features his many performances from the popular NPR radio show and podcast. It also captures the essence of his live energy and\, at times hilarious storytelling. Burge resides in Parkersburg WV with his wife Lisa and their children\, Will and Sophia. \nERIC GNEZDA\nwww.gnezda.com\nEric Gnezda is the creator and host of the American Public Television series\, Songs at the Center\, broadcast on 150 stations nationwide. The series features accomplished singer-songwriters performing “in the round” before a live audience. The weekly\, half-hour program showcases three-to-four artists\, and includes interviews and short features. \nAn award-winning songwriter and Emmy-nominated television journalist\, Eric and his work have been featured on media around the world. He is a recipient of the Ohioana Citation for Music Composition\, joining Michael Feinstein (American Songbook)\, Jorma Kaukonen (Jefferson Airplane)\, and Chip Davis (Mannheim Steamroller). \nAlso a keynote speaker and memoirist\, Eric performs for audiences across the country\, from convention centers\, to concert halls\, to small clubs\, including regular appearances at Nashville’s iconic venue for songwriters\, The Bluebird Café. He is currently adapting his memoir\, The Safe Life\, into a one-person stage show. He has released four CDs\, including his latest\, Songs of Hope in a Changing World. \nEric has contributed commentaries to NPR’s “All Things Considered\,” the ABC Radio Network\, and was a columnist for The Columbus Dispatch. As a television journalist\, He earned an Emmy nomination for his retrospective on the Munich Olympic massacre\, produced in Europe for American television. \nSadie Johnson\, a student at Marietta College\, first picked up the guitar at the age of six and has since developed into an inspiring blues guitarist\, composer and performer. Recently opening for Delbert McClinton\, she has numerous individual and ensemble jazz fest awards. MacTaggart Department of Music at Marietta College is sponsoring the Brick Street Arts Bash. This FREE\, all-day arts block party will take place in the 100 and 200 blocks of Putnam Street. Peoples Bank Theatre will be alive with activity throughout the day. There will also be a street-level stage at the intersection of Second and Putnam Streets\, as well as a covered\, raised stage at Front and Putnam. \nThis Arts Advocacy event\, will also feature the works of 34 displaying artists from all over Ohio and the Mid Ohio Valley. Music\, dance\, art exhibits and theatre performances and demonstrations of every genre will be presented during this day long event. \nNumerous events and art exhibits will take place from 10:30 a.m.  to 11:00 p.m.  All events\, concert\, demonstrations are open to the public and free of charge. The two-hour radio show is produced in West Virginia and distributed by National Public Radio weekly on more than 150 stations across America and around the world via NPR Music and mountainstage.org. The show\, which is recorded before a live audience\, features performances by seasoned legends and emerging stars in genres ranging from folk\, blues and country to indie rock\, synth pop\, world and alternative music\, and beyond. \nSinger/songwriter Larry Groce serves as the show’s host\, artistic director and co-producer. The Mountain Stage house band includes jazz pianist Bob Thompson\, vocalist Julie Adams\, bass player Steve Hill\, drummer Ammed Solomon and guitarists Michael Lipton and Ryan Kennedy. The band is directed by Ron Sowell. \nPeoples Bank Theatre and Mountain Stage with Larry Groce are excited to announce four of the guests for the radio show’s first appearance in the Pioneer City on April 9: John Németh & The Blue Dreamers\, Edward David Anderson\, Shemekia Copeland\, Bridget Kearney\, and The T Sisters. \nJohn Németh \nJohn Németh had already established himself among the very top ranks of blues musicians and modern soul singers when he decided to break the mold with his new record\, FEELIN’ FREAKY. Németh fearlessly crushes all barriers of style and genre with an album of original songs that defies all the usual pigeonholes. Drawing from his strong influences in blues and R&B\, as well as contemporary sounds in hip hop and rock & roll\, John creates music that is personal as well as universal\, and owes its origin to no one but John Németh. John’s songs are groove and melody-driven\, laced with thoughtful lyrics and nuanced humor\, and cover themes from social issues of gun violence and class values to the pure hedonistic joy of dancing\, sexuality and marijuana. He creates his songs from melodies and phrases he draws from the sounds of life\, from early-morning Memphis songbirds to the din of the city. For this album John brought his new songs to his great touring band\, the Blue Dreamers – Danny Banks on drums\, Matthew Wilson on bass and guitar\, and Johnny Rhodes on guitar. \nEdward David Anderson \nEdward David Anderson is one of music’s modern makers\, a rock & roll veteran who spent his formative years fronting the revered Midwest band\, Backyard Tire Fire. Known for infectious melodies and memorable messages Anderson penned 8 albums for the band and played countless shows across the US and Canada. Their eventual hiatus fostered his solo debut\, Lies & Wishes (2014\, Royal Potato Family) working with friend and Grammy winning producer Steve Berlin of Los Lobos.  A serendipitous move south in 2013 introduced him to ‘Lower Alabama’ where he found the culture and beaches provided reprieve from life on the road and a second home. He quickly immersed himself into the rich and welcoming LA music scene where he met producer Anthony Crawford (Neil Young\, Willie Sugarcapps) and recorded Lower Alabama: The Loxley Sessions over the winter of 2014. The album floats melodiously on rivers of fiddle and clouds of pedal steel\, on gentle acoustic guitars and hints of piano\, dusted with some ghostly guitar from Will Kimbrough and striking vocal harmony by Crawford’s wife\, singer Savana Lee. The nine-song collection steps firmly into the Americana world and was hailed “A wonderfully soulful record” by David Dye (NPR’s World Cafe) and “A simply infectious album” by No Depression. \nShemekia Copeland \nWhether she’s belting out a raucous blues-rocker\, firing up a blistering soul-shouter\, bringing the spirit to a gospel-fueled R&B rave-up or digging deep down into a subtle\, country-tinged ballad\, Shemekia Copeland sounds like no one else. This month\, Shemekia was nominated as the 38th Annual Blues Music Award’s Contemporary Blues Female Artist. Shemekia won that same category in 2016 after the release of Outskirts of Love. Her acclaimed eighth album\, released by Alligator Records in September 2015\, was also nominated for a Grammy Award. \nThe Chicago Tribune says Copeland delivers “gale force singing and power” with a “unique\, gutsy style\, vibrant emotional palette and intuitive grasp of the music.” NPR Music calls her “fiercely expressive.” She has sung with Eric Clapton\, Bonnie Raitt\, B.B. King\, Buddy Guy\, Mick Jagger\, Keith Richards\, Carlos Santana\, James Cotton and opened for The Rolling Stones. \nBridget Kearney \nOver the past 12 years\, Bridget Kearney has toured the world as the bassist of the soul pop sensation Lake Street Dive. An incredibly versatile musician\, Kearney has always been voraciously collaborative\, dabbling in chamber pop with the Brooklyn group Cuddle Magic\, bluegrass with the now defunct Boston outfit Joy Kills Sorrow\, and Ghanian music as part of a duo with fellow songwriter Benjamin Lazar Davis. A past winner of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest\, this year Kearney steps into the spotlight with her first solo effort\, a wry\, big-hearted pop album titled Won’t Let You Down\, scheduled for release in March. \nT Sisters \nThe T Sisters\, born and raised in California and now based in the creative hub of Oakland\, embody harmony. It’s in their blood\, bones\, and history. Erika\, Rachel and Chloe have been singing and writing music together since childhood. Their sound represents a continuum of music\, from traditional to pop influences\, moments of breathtaking a cappella to swells of energetic indie Americana. The First World War stands as a forgotten time in American history. On Founders Day in Marietta\, Ohio\, The Castle Historic House Museum’s event “Lest We Forget” will remember Washington County’s involvement in this conflict with an evening of WWI era music. This one-night-only concert features talented regional musicians and renowned speakers at the historic Peoples Bank Theatre in the heart of downtown Marietta. Musical renditions by Marietta College Concert Choir & Wind Ensemble\, The Wayfarers\, Barefoot McCoy\, Square Thirteen\, Dan Heidt\, Anthony Mossburg\, and Shawna Corder. Speakers include Author Dr. Paul Lockhart (Wright State University)\, Sergeant First Class Joshua Mann\, Historian (Ohio National Guard)\, Becki Trivison\, WWI Coordinator (Ohio History Connection)\, Dr. Matthew Young (Marietta College)\, and more. With the ability to converse in 498 animal dialects\, Dolittle gathers up his friends Matthew Mugg (Anthony Newley) and Emma Fairfax (Samantha Eggar) and heads off on a journey to the South Seas to find the elusive great pink snail and the giant lunar moth. Along the way\, the group encounters a succession of bizarre human and animal characters — most notably the legendary pushme-pullyou\, an animal so outlandish that it compels Albert Blossom (Richard Attenborough) to burst out into the exuberant song\, “I’ve never Seen Anything Like It in My Life.” The film was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar in 1967.

He will also share with you why he feels creativity is endless. \nEric Gnezda\, MFA\, is creator\, host and producer of the national TV show\, Songs at the Center. An award-winning songwriter\, Eric is a regular performer at Nashville’s Bluebird Café. Eric has seen success with a wide range of styles – from comedic to inspirational songs. He and his work have been featured on radio and television around the world. Also\, a public speaker and Emmy-nominated TV journalist\, Eric has appeared before countless corporate clients across America. Away from the stage\, he is a lecturer at Ohio Wesleyan University. Eric’s workshop is called\, “How to Write Comedic Songs and Parodies”. \nRon Sowell is best known for his role as the musical director for the internationally acclaimed radio show Mountain Stage. Ron Sowell is also a dynamic singer and performer\, accomplished guitar and harmonica player\, award winning songwriter and critically acclaimed producer. He has recorded four albums with West Virginia based bands – the Putnam County Pickers and Stark Raven. He has toured extensively across the United States and to Greenland\, Europe\, the Mediterranean and Africa. In addition\, he has recorded three solo CD’s of original music including his latest release” Little Movies”. \nRon’s Workshop: Cooking Up a Song from Scratch\nThe best way to learn to write a song is by doing it! Ron will talk about choosing a subject and a musical style\, deciding on tempo and picking a major or minor key to fit the emotion. He will then lead the class through the simple formula he has devised over the years at going from nothing\, to having a completed song! \nThe emphasis will be on spontaneity\, having fun\, and creating a safe space to offer ideas. Team work and respecting each other’s ideas will be encouraged. At the end of the day participants will have a creative process that they can take home and duplicate in other settings. \nGene Castelli\, Co-coordinator\, Nashville Songwriters Association International\, Columbus Chapter. A veteran songwriter\, Gene has taught the craft for more than a decade to songwriters of all levels. \nGene’s Workshop: From Idea to I Did It!\n“I’ve put together a list of the most common things about songwriting\, like\, hook\, chorus\, bridge\, pre-chorus\, etc. I will walk my class through the terminology and what it means\, and then have fun with them putting a song together. At the end we will all be putting our names on it as a co-writer!” \nJim Shaw\, MA\, is a music educator of 35 years in both public and private schools\, K-12. A composer and touring musician\, Jim is a faculty member in music education at Ashland University\, where he teaches primarily education and nursing students on techniques of bringing music into the classroom. Millie finds work with the handsome bachelor Trevor Graydon (John Gavin)\, but Trevor has his eyes on Dorothy. So too does Mrs. Meers\, who despite her kindly exterior is actually an unscrupulous white slaver. Paper clip salesman Jimmy Smith (James Fox)\, on the other hand\, pledges his undying love to Millie. One day\, after attending a weekend party being given at the opulent Long Island mansion of Muzzy Van Hossmere (Carol Channing)\, Dorothy disappears. When Jimmy and Millie smell opium in Dorothy’s room\, they realize the awful truth about Mrs. Meers. Trying to rescue Dorothy and find the location of Mrs. Meers’ hideout\, Jimmy disguises himself as an orphaned woman and tries to get himself kidnapped. The scheme backfires\, however\, and Mrs. Meers drugs and kidnaps both Jimmy and Trevor. Delbert is always working on that second group. \nLyle Lovett has said\, “If we could all sing like we wanted to\, we’d all sing like Delbert.” \nThe multi-Grammy Award winning artist is at the top of his game with his 19th studio album\, Prick Of The Litter (Hot Shot Records/Thirty Tigers). The new offering captures the balance of soulful energy and restraint that the legendary performer has been delivering in his live performances for decades all over the world. He has won two Grammy awards in the blues category for Best Contemporary Blues Album; and one in the rock category (Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group)\, with Bonnie Raitt for “Good Man\, Good Woman”. \nDelbert’s unique musical style grew from his Texas music beginnings. Influenced at a young age by Tejano\, Western Swing\, Rhythm and Blues and War songs\, he developed a signature sound that served him well. \nDelbert grew up around Lubbock and Fort Worth\, and spent his early career in the desegregating roadhouses of Fort Worth’s Jacksboro Highway\, leading the house bands for Jimmy Reed\, Muddy Waters\, Bo Diddley\, and others\, while making a local name for himself. Later\, Delbert traveled to England where he headlined shows with Bruce Channel (“Hey Baby”) with a little-known Liverpool band [The Beatles] as the opening act. He then rolled into Los Angeles as songwriters began to take top billing\, and headed back to Texas for the progressive movement and blues renaissance that helped kick off Austin’s role in American musical history. \nIf you’ve seen a live Delbert McClinton show\, you will recognize the synchronized energy on Prick Of The Litter that comes from thousands of miles of playing together. Delbert feels that his current road band\, Self-Made Men\, is the best band he’s ever had. \n“Jack Bruno [drums] is amazing. He played with Joe Cocker and with Tina Turner for years. I’ve been harder on drummers than anybody in the world\, but Jack is right there where I need him. Dana Robbins [saxophone] and Quentin ‘Q’ Ware [trumpet] punctuate the live performances in just the right places. James Pennebaker [guitar] is family. He’s been playing with me off and on since he was nineteen. Mike Joyce [bass guitar]\, Kevin McKendree [piano]\, and Bob Britt [guitar] are among my best friends\, in addition to being in the band. Mike and Kevin and I write together a lot. We wrote most of the songs on this album together.” \nDelbert\, Kevin and Bob also co-produced Prick Of The Litter. “Going into the studio with a band that’s like family creates real magic\,” says Delbert. “You have the energy of a live band. We feed off of each other. We are better together. And it always feels like they have my back.” Jimmie Vaughan and Lou Ann Barton are an added bonus on the first track. Delbert adds “I am such a fan of Lou Ann and of Jimmie. We needed a female to do a part on ‘Don’t Do It.’ Bob suggested Lou Ann\, and I knew she would be perfect. I have always loved Jimmie and Lou Ann. I had talked to Jimmie about doing something on my last album but it didn’t work out. So this time\, we went to Austin and they both came into the studio. We spent about two hours and had a lot of fun. They are both so talented.” \nDelbert wrote or co-wrote ten of the songs on the album. “By the time we wrote these songs\, Mike\, Bob and Kevin had been in my band for a long time\,” says Delbert. “We got together every Wednesday for several weeks\, and then we went to Mexico and finished writing the rest of the album.” \n2017 is a milestone year for Delbert. In addition to the release of Prick Of The Litter\, a biography is slated for release in September. He has also been nominated for Texas State Musician\, a highly acclaimed state appointment akin to poet laureate. \nPrick of the Litter is a signature project for Delbert McClinton\, and he is proud of it. “We worked hard on this and we got exactly what we wanted\,” he says. “The songs\, the band\, the production. Everything came together. We didn’t leave no chicken on the bone\,” he says. \n“I did what I came to do with this album. I guess I really am One of the Fortunate Few.”

Along the way to the village\, night falls and Mowgli and Bagheera almost succumb to the man-eating snake Kaa (voice of Sterling Holloway). Escaping Kaa’s coils\, they run into the lock-step military elephant band of Colonel Hathi (voice of J. Pat O’Malley). Afterwards\, Mowgli\, who doesn’t want to be sent to the human village\, runs away from Bagheera and meets up with the fun-loving Baloo the Bear (voice of Phil Harrris). Still\, they aren’t prepared for the shock when she returns home from a vacation with a new fiancé: African-American doctor John Prentice (Sidney Poitier). While they come to grips with whatever prejudices they might still harbor\, the younger folks must also contend with John’s parents (Roy Glenn Sr. and Beah Richards)\, who are dead-set against the union. To complicate matters\, the older couple’s disapproving maid (Isabel Sanford) and Christina’s bigoted business associate (Virginia Christine) put in their two cents’ worth. While Joey is determined to go ahead with the wedding no matter what people think\, John refuses to consider marriage until he receives the unqualified approval of all concerned. The closing monologue delivered by Spencer Tracy turned out to be the last scene ever played by the veteran film luminary\, who died not long after the production. It could swing with the best of them\, and no other band could come close to Tommy’s when it came to playing ballads. Tommy Dorsey\, “The Sentimental Gentleman of Swing”\, was a master at creating warm\, sentimental\, and always musical moods – at superb dancing and listening tempos. Tommy sustained these moods through the arrangements of the likes of Paul Weston\, Axel Stordahl and Sy Oliver\, and he showcased singers who could project them brilliantly. \nJack Leonard sang with the band for about four years\, recording such fine sides as “Dedicated To You”\, “If It’s The Last Thing I do”\, “Little White Lies”\, “You Taught Me To Love Again”\, “Once In A While”\, and\, probably the most famous of all\, “Marie”. With the band singing vocal riffs as Jack sang the straight lyric\, “Marie” was so successful that he recorded several more standard tunes with the same formula. They include “Who”\, “Yearning”\, and “East Of The Sun”. “Song Of India”\, the other side of “Marie”\, was also a huge Dorsey hit. \nFrank Sinatra’s career blossomed with Dorsey\, and\, with Sinatra’s vocals\, the band became more successful than ever. Frank had often admitted that listening to Tommy helped him develop his phrasing and breathing\, along with his musical taste and knowledge. \nSy Oliver infused the band with a new musical spirit. It was a gentler version of the rocking\, rhythmic sounds that he had created for Jimmy Lunceford\, toned down somewhat and played with more precision by the Dorsey Band. These original tunes included “Easy Does It”\, “Quiet Please”\, “Sing High”\, “Yes\, Indeed”\, “Swingin’ On Nothing”\, “Well\, Git It”\, and “Opus No 1”. Oliver also had a unique way of approaching a straight pop tune\, injecting a soft\, two-beat feeling into. He did this with resounding success in such arrangements as “What Can I Say After I Say I’m Sorry? “\, “For You”\, “Swanee River”\, “Mandy”\, “Make Up Your Mind”\, “Chicago”\, and “On The Sunny Side Of The Street”. \nThe vocalists worked both individually and together\, turning out several hits of superior quality. There was Sinatra’s “This Love of Mine”\, Jo Stafford’s “Embraceable You”\, the Pied Pipers’ and Sinatra’s “There Are Such Things”\, “Just As Though You Were Here”\, “Street Of Dreams”\, and “Oh\, Look At Me Now”. Their biggest hit of all\, the one that established vocal groups forever\, was “I’ll Never Smile Again”. \nThe Band was at its best in this decade. In the summer of 1941\, it outranked every other band to finish first in one of the most indicative of all popularity polls\, Martin Block’s Make Believe Ballroom contest. \nBy late 1946\, it was becoming apparent that the band business was having problems. In December 1946\, eight top bandleaders announced they were calling it quits – Woody Herman\, Benny Goodman\, Harry James\, Les Brown\, Jack Teagarden\, Benny Carter\, Ina Ray Hutton and Tommy Dorsey. Essentially\, this was the official end of the Big Band Era. However\, it was Tommy Dorsey who\, in the years immediately following\, fought the case of the big bands with words and action. Less than two years later\, he was fronting a formidable new group.\nIt’s about time somebody got things going again”\, Tommy said at the time. “You can’t expect to have any real interest in dance bands if the bands don’t go around the country and play for the kids.” \nAnd so it continues. The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra is still traveling throughout the country playing “for the kids” (of all ages).

Based loosely on the true exploits of Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker during the 30s\, the film begins as Clyde (Beatty) tries to steal the car of Bonnie Parker (Faye Dunaway)’s mother. Bonnie is excited by Clyde’s outlaw demeanor\, and he further stimulates her by robbing a store in her presence. Clyde steals a car\, with Bonnie in tow\, and their legendary crime spree begins. The two move from town to town\, pulling off small heists\, until they join up with Clyde’s brother Buck (Gene Hackman)\, his shrill wife Blanche (Estelle Parsons)\, and a slow-witted gas station attendant named C.W. Moss (Michael J. Pollard). The new gang robs a bank and Clyde is soon painted in the press as a Depression-era Robin Hood when he allows one bank customer to hold onto his money. Soon the police are on the gang’s trail and they are constantly on the run\, even kidnapping a Texas Ranger (Denver Pyle) and setting him adrift on a raft\, handcuffed\, after he spits in Bonnie’s face when she kisses him. That same ranger leads a later raid on the gang that leaves Buck dying\, Blanche captured\, and both Clyde and Bonnie injured. The ever-loyal C.W. takes them to his father’s house. C.W.’s father disaproves his son’s affiliation with gangsters and enters a plea bargain with the Texas Rangers. The film made stars out of Beatty and Dunaway\, and it also featured the screen debut of Gene Wilder as a mortician briefly captured by the gang. Its portrayal of Bonnie and Clyde as rebels who empathized with the poor working folks of the 1930s struck a chord with the counterculture of the 1960s and helped generate a new\, young audience for American movies that carried over into Hollywood’s renewal of the 1970s. \nCast: \nWarren Beatty\nFaye Dunaway\nMichael J. Meanwhile\, Zhivago’s half-brother Yevgraf (Alec Guinness) and the mysterious\, revenge-seeking Strelnikoff (Tom Courteney) represent the “good” and “bad” elements of the Bolshevik revolution. Composer Maurice Jarre received one of Doctor Zhivago’s five Oscars\, with the others going to screenwriter Robert Bolt\, cinematographer Freddie Young\, art directors John Box and Terry Marsh\, set decorator Dario Simoni\, and costumer Phyllis Dalton. This condensed version of the ballet takes place in the dreams of young Clara\, in which she receives dolls who take life as the dancers. Set to the classical music of Tchaikovsky\, Clara’s Christmas Eve dream begins with a visit from the angels and the Sugar Plum Fairy\, and continues with the magical surprises from Herr Drosselmeyer. The ballet was set after the original Ivanov choreography specifically for the youth dancers of SYBC by the late Duncan Noble\, world-renowned dancer\, teacher\, choreographer\, and former Dean of Dance at the North Carolina School of the Arts.

Based on the award-winning storybook written by Chris Van Allsburg\, this Christmas story tells of a boy who has reached an age when his belief in Santa is beginning to falter. \nThe young and young-at-heart are encouraged to come dressed in Christmas pajamas and enjoy the show. Santa will be on hand to hear Christmas wishes\, and true to the Polar Express experience\, hot chocolate and cookies will be available\, too. \nLate one Christmas Eve\, a young boy is lying awake waiting for the sound of sleigh bells ringing from Santa’s sleigh. Five minutes to midnight his room begins to shake\, and he hears a thunderous sound outside his window. The boy jumps from his bed and sees a train in the middle of his street. The boy grabs his robe and rushes out the front door to look at the train. The train’s conductor asks the boy if he is getting aboard. The boy asks\, ‘Where are you going?’ ‘To the North Pole\, of course. This is the Polar Express!’ replies the conductor. At the last minute\, the boy jumps on the train and finds other young boys and girls going to the North Pole. Their adventure begins. On the train he meets more children\, among them a know-it-all\, a clever girl and a poor boy. During the trip to the North Pole\, there are several complications before the end of the journey comes. When they reach the North Pole\, the children meet Santa Claus\, and the boy gets the very first Christmas present of the year—a sleigh bell from Santa’s sleigh. They return safely to their homes in time for Christmas Day\, and the boy finds the Christmas present from Santa beneath his tree.
