Gillis\, a talented multi-instrumentalist\, has extensive touring experience with artists like Butch Trucks and Lindsay Lou and also leads her own group called Wolf Twin. While in Nashville\, the trio recorded a live version of their original song “Seventh Son\,” which they released December 5\, 2024. \nSince then\, things have moved fast for the trio. The band’s first three albums The Outlaws\, Lady In Waiting and Hurry Sundown – featuring such rock radio favorites as ‘There Goes Another Love Song’\, ‘Green Grass & High Tides’\, ‘Knoxville Girl’ and ‘Freeborn Man’ – would become worldwide gold and platinum landmarks of the Southern Rock era. Are we going to love\, or are we going to hate? We have a finite amount of time\, each of us on this Earth. So probably want to make the best out of it instead of wasting time.” \n“Dig A Hole” is the lead track on Be Right Here and sets the tone for another expansive set of rock ‘n’ roll from Blackberry Smoke. As always\, the Georgia-based band—Starr\, Still\, guitarist/vocalist Paul Jackson\, bassist/vocalist Richard Turner and drummer Brit Turner—draw inspiration from Southern rock\, blues-leaning classic rock and rootsy vintage country. But on Be Right Here\, Blackberry Smoke sound even more self-assured\, from the strength of their songwriting to their musical execution. \nOver the past two decades\, Blackberry Smoke has developed this confidence and amassed a loyal fanbase\, leading their last five full-length albums to achieve great chart success\, including 2021’s You Hear Georgia\, which reached #1 on Billboard’s Americana/Folk Albums chart. \nThe band wrote and recorded You Hear Georgia during the most intense periods of the pandemic but held off on releasing it until they could go tour again. Starr says Blackberry Smoke took the same deliberate approach with Be Right Here\, which was recorded in late 2022 and early 2023\, around the same time drummer Brit Turner was diagnosed with a type of brain tumor known as Glioblastoma. “We didn’t feel a whole lot of pressure to go in and make this one quickly\,” Starr shares. \nWorking once again with Grammy-Award winning producer Dave Cobb\, Blackberry Smoke has crafted music that’s raw and immediate-sounding. They tracked the album live in the same space; an approach Cobb also prefers as it lends itself to a looser vibe. “I remember different times I would say\, ‘I think we should redo that\,’ and he’s like\, ‘No\, leave it that way. That way it’s magical\,” Starr remembers. “It’s just as natural and real as possible.” \nLocation also factored into Be Right Here’s sound as they recorded most of the album at Nashville’s beloved RCA Studio A\, and then polished it off in Cobb’s studio in Savannah\, Georgia. “It’s down in the low country and beautiful\,” Starr says of the space\, called Georgia Mae. “This album has a swagger to it\, a deep in the pocket kind of feel. Those surroundings helped give the record that feel.” \nBe Right Here’s lyrics are particularly literary\, full of vivid and relatable characters that ensure the songs often resemble rich short stories. For example\, “Whatcha Know Good\,” a co-write with Brent Cobb\, is a “feel-good song” driven by an amiable narrator who gets along with everybody and dislikes negativity. “There’s plenty of bad news when you turn on the television\,” Starr says. “The dude in this song\, he doesn’t want to hear it anymore. He wants to go to fishing and talk about good news. We were giggling the whole time because we know that guy. Maybe we are that guy.” \nA laid-back\, Stones-like guitar lick from former Buckcherry guitarist Keith Nelson inspired “Like It Was Yesterday\,” helping Starr conjure another very specific character: an earnest young guy who doesn’t have much life experience\, but knows what he likes and is grateful for good times. “I picture him laying on the hood of his car with his girl\, staring up at the moon and the stars\,” Starr says. “It’s the idea of holding onto that fleeting moment\, because it can slip away from you.” \nOther Be Right Here highlights include “Azalea” and “Little Bit Crazy\,” both co-written with Starr’s frequent songwriting collaborator Travis Meadows. The latter song\, which begins with a chorus of soulful gospel singers before blooming into a languid Southern rocker\, features a narrator who’s embroiled in a relationship that’s fun\, but not necessarily healthy. \nMeanwhile\, the lovely\, elegiac folk ballad “Azalea” is centered on someone who seems emotionally bereft and spiritually lost\, but is working hard to find their way home. “It’s a heavy song. It’s not a happy song\, per se\,” Starr says. However\, “Azalea” has a distinct streak of optimism near the end\, which Starr says is intentional: “There’s some hope in there\, too. It comes with both Travis and I being fathers. Hold on to your kids as tight as you can without smothering them.” \nThe delicate balance of familial protection also permeates the easygoing “Other Side of the Light\,” a co-write with Levi Lowrey. Written from the perspective of a young boy on an obstacle-filled road trip\, the tune stresses that he’ll find shelter and safety with his mom. In contrast\, the stomping “Hammer and the Nail\,” which Starr wrote with Nelson\, takes another approach to family ties—in this case\, a son who needs to decide if he’s going to give into his wild side and take after his rebellious father. We’re telling our grandparents’ story through our story.”\nBut Twitty & Lynn — and their internationally popular show “A Salute to Conway & Loretta” — aren’t impersonators. Tre doesn’t groom Seventies sideburns and perm his hair; Tayla doesn’t mimic her grandmother’s mannerisms. Rather\, they are onstage celebrating country music\, the lost art of duet singing\, and the two beloved icons they refer to as “Poppy” and “Memaw.”\n“I think of us as the ambassadors of the Twitty and Lynn names — we’re just the new version of what they’ve already established\,” Tre says. “But we also want to be caretakers of the past. At our shows\, we get generations of fans because country music is passed down.”\n“It’s about family — the fans’ families and our own\,” Tayla says. “We have so much love and respect for Conway and Loretta and we want to carry this on in such a way that we make our families proud.”\nLoretta herself was impressed. The Country Music Hall of Fame member helped her granddaughter and Tre with their show and had the same time-traveling experience that today’s audiences do while watching them perform. “Memaw just loved it. It brought up so many memories of Conway for her and took her back to a place in her life when they were building their careers. She’d always say that Tre has Conway’s heart\,” says Tayla\, who lives at Lynn’s Tennessee ranch and used to tour with her grandmother\, cuddling up together in the bus’s bedroom to watch old movies while on the road. “We were very close\,” she says.\nTayla first had the idea for the show after witnessing Tre perform Conway’s songs during a concert at the ranch. She approached him about teaming up and\, after a few shows to test the waters\, they embarked on a tour of Canada in 2018.“Even though we didn’t grow up together\, meeting each other wasn’t like meeting strangers\,” Tayla says. “It was like we had always known each other because we had the same experiences.”\nNow together as “Twitty & Lynn” for five years and poised to launch a huge summertime tour\, the duo has cultivated an audience and caught the attention of Nashville along the way. In 2022\, they made their debut on the world-famous Grand Ole Opry\, singing “Louisiana Woman\, Mississippi Man” on the very same circle of wood where Conway and Loretta once stood.\n\nThe duo credits their show’s popularity to the timeless songs of Conway and Loretta — duets like “After the Fire Is Gone” and “You’re the Reason Our Kids Are Ugly” are all in the set\, along with Conway and Loretta solo hits like “Hello\, Darlin’” and “Coal Miner’s Daughter.” But they’re also giving audiences a chance to relive a moment in time that ended far too soon: Conway and Loretta stopped touring together full-time in 1981\, and Conway died in 1993. “Conway has been gone30 years\,” Tre says. “Had Poppy lived\, I think there would have been a great second act for him and Loretta. There’s a lot of people that wanted to see that\, and we’re able to let them hear those songs and stories again.”\nTre and Tayla are busy forging their own artistic identities too. The duo has an album of originals (and a few covers) on the way. With Tayla as chief songwriter\, she and Tre have written songs for the project with Jeffrey Steele\, Mark Narmore\, Shelly Fairchild\, and their producer Scott Baggett. “We’re at a great time in country music and Americana\, where artists like Miranda Lambert\, Margo Price\, and all these funky country singers are embracing the Seventies style of Conway and Loretta. So when I’m writing\, I’m drawn to that\,” Tayla says. “We’re in a prime time to be doing our type of music.”\nThe pair also released a smoldering cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m on Fire” in 2022\, with a haunting music video filmed on the New Jersey shore\, and cut a version of Conway and Loretta’s “Feelins’” — recorded the day after Loretta died last year. The raw emotion in the song is palpable. “It wasn’t planned out\,” Tre says. “We were going into the studio to record our original tracks and Memaw had died the day before. So we said\, ‘Let’s do one of her songs with Conway.’ There was this emotion in the room that we just couldn’t ignore.”\nHonest emotion\, along with Tre and Tayla’s innate chemistry\, is what defines their onstage performances. Whether they’re singing to each other or interacting with the audience\, there’s an easygoing authenticity that comes across. Tayla even talks to the crowd about her sobriety\, sharing a personal tale of struggle and redemption.\nIn the end\, though\, their goal is to entertain while\, at the same time\, honoring their grandparents. Tre is lobbying for Conway\, already a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame\, to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame\, and Tayla is working on preserving not just Loretta’s music but her fashion: she wore one of her grandmother’s outfits on stage at the Opry.\n“Conway and Loretta used to do everything with so much passion: the way they dressed\, the way they recorded\, the way they performed\,” Tayla says. “We want to bring that to fans who were lucky enough to see our grandparents before and to those who are just learning about them.”\n“Our show gives people an idea of what Loretta and Conway were like through their grandchildren’s eyes\,” adds Tre. “It’s a special gift to keep that flame burning.”\n\n\n\n\nOPENING ACT: Jake Binegar\nA modern country music sensation hailing from the hills of the Mid-Ohio Valley\, embodies the heart and soul of Appalachia in every chord he strums. He had studied acting at Carnegie-Mellon University but dropped out to partake in the Summer of Love in San Francisco and wrote his first song in 1968 (“Edgar\,” about a lobsterman in Rhode Island). \nHe was soon signed to Atlantic Records by Nesuhi Ertegun\, and after that was lured by Clive Davis to Columbia Records\, which released “Dead Skunk.” His songs have since been recorded by Bonnie Raitt\, Johnny Cash\, Earl Scruggs\, Kate & Anna McGarrigle\, his son Rufus Wainwright\, and Mose Allison\, among others. Wainwright has recorded 27 albums\, including his 2009 Grammy Award-winning High Wide & Handsome. \nIn 2022 Loudon released Lifetime Achievement\, an album of 15 original songs\, that established his singular talent as our foremost six-string tragicomedian\, not only undiminished\, but hitting new heights. The orchestration varies from solo performance to trio work with his longstanding musical cohorts\, Chaim Tannenbaum and David Mansfield\, to Nashville and Memphis-style little big bands\, to a full-blown string arrangement by Rob Moose. Loudon puts his latest achievement in the context of a lifetime of music making this way: “When I made my first record for Atlantic in 1969\, I wanted to make not only a recording\, but a document that captures a moment. Now\, fifty years later\, I guess I still want to make a testament of songs\, and I like to think they might last a while.” \nIn October of 2020 Loudon unveiled the album I’d Rather Lead a Band\, in which he is featured as a vocalist with Vince Giordano and The Nighthawks. The 14-song collection of classic songs from the 1920s and ‘30s was widely acclaimed. During the pandemic\, Wainwright has produced several virtual shows\, including The Special Relationship (presented by the Royal Albert Hall ) and The Great Unknown\, a musical tribute to his friend\, the late George Gerdes. Also featured in that show were Richard Thompson\, Suzanne Vega\, Steve Forbert\, and the members of Spinal Tap. \nIn Fall 2018\, Loudon released Years in the Making a 42-song treasury of rare and unreleased Loudoniana. This 2-disc\, 60-page hardbound audio-biography of his 40-year career includes orphaned album cuts\, lovingly made lo-fi home recordings\, radio appearances\, demos\, live performances and beyond. It features appearances by Kate McGarrigle\, Suzzy Roche\, Bill Frisell\, Van Dyke Parks\, Chaim Tannenbaum\, David Mansfield\, and the Wainwright children Rufus\, Martha\, Lucy\, and Lexie.

In 2017\, Wainwright published his memoir\, Liner Notes (Blue Rider Press)\, which led to appearances on Fresh Air with Terry Gross and WTF with Marc Maron. The New York Times said the book “makes your heart wobble on its axis.”

Wainwright also created a one-man theatrical show\, Surviving Twin\, which combines his songs and the writings of his late father. Initially developed as part of University of North Carolina’s Playmakers series\, it focuses on fatherhood—both being a father and having one—and also explores the issues of birth\, self-identity\, loss\, mortality\, fashion\, and of course\, pet ownership. Surviving Twin has been performed in limited theater engagements and is available as a Netflix special\, produced by Judd Apatow and directed by Christopher Guest. \nAdditionally\, Wainwright has co-written with songwriter/producer Joe Henry on the music for Judd Apatow’s hit movie Knocked Up\, written music for the British theatrical adaptation of the Carl Hiaasen novel Lucky You and composed topical songs for NPR’s Morning Edition and All Things Considered and ABC’s Nightline. An accomplished actor\, he has appeared in films directed by Martin Scorsese\, Hal Ashby\, Christopher Guest\, Tim Burton\, Cameron Crowe\, and Judd Apatow. Wainwright has also starred on TV in M.A.S.H. and Undeclared\, and on Broadway in Pump Boys and Dinettes.
